      Except the grocery bags.
      Why they don’t offer paper bags anymore is beyond me.

      My assumption is they (our local trash service) has issues with the plastic bags jamming things up. Think about it, these things are very thin and can get into cracks and crevices we don't think about. Just a guess mind you, but that's what I think is causing them to be banned. Like you, we're going to have to figure out another way to do things we've used them for and most likely it won't be healthy for the environment..

      My assumption is that when you need to make excuses for an action, you'll find plenty of willing participants. Especially ones that are also government employees or who get the bulk of their revenue from the government.
      Fact is, recycling plastic isn't a viable business unless it's subsidized by public funds. It only exists because we all are paying extra for it.

    Yeah, just walk down the aisle of any store and marvel at all the "one time use" plastic of the blister packs. Often as much plastic in the blisters as the product.
    I saw your sanding block video earlier today and will be trying it myself. I still begrudge needing to find a screw driver. But I like how easily made the blocks and strips will be. So a fair compromise between quicker switching but rapid production? We'll see how it goes.
    One idea I'm going to keep in the corner of my head is if I find that the paper creeps at the ends. If it does I'm thinking rather than two screws per side go with slightly building up the triangles at the end with some durable tape or relieve the middle a touch. That way the initial contact and more of the pressure will be at the ends. But that's only if I find it needs the extra help and work.

    Once in a while I need to get something from the grocery store but it's way past closing time except for one store called Sobey's which is open 24/7. Every time I go there I forget to bring my own bags and end up buying their one time use sh***y paper bags which always end up ripping and go right into the blue bin as soon as I take the stuff out of them.
    We've let these politicians become the experts in various fields when in fact they are idiots who don't know how things really work. Even the smartest politician with the smartest people around them with no external agenda cannot run society. It takes normal well adjusted average people who are experts in their chosen field to make society run well. There are too many variables that are constantly changing for one person or a small group of people to understand. A good essay that explains it in simple, easy to understand language is "I, Pencil" by Leonard E. Read. A short read that I've recommended to very left and right leaning people who look at the world differently now.

    At work tucked away a bit we have an old drill press with a vise ( adjustable in depth) on it in stead of a table. ( originally not altered) . So if you still have your old homemade bench vise ( the one made with a scaffold leveler) , that would be a nice revival of that vise and probably be a better fit for it in my opinion because of construction of the vise, but like always i’m curious what you gonna come up with. 😀

    • @IBuildItScrapBin
      @IBuildItScrapBin  Před rokem +2

      That type of vise doesn't have an opening through the middle like a twin screw vise, so you can't clamp longer material in it vertically. That's why I want to use my gear connected vise.
      And I gave the old wooden vise away a few years ago.

    Your v-block sanding block is a very nice invention, I'll build a couple of those. I wonder about using a wood screw for an item that gets opened and closed occasionally so I was thinking you could put in brass inserts and use a bolt. Then I thought you could make a bolt with a knob on it so you wouldn't have to find a special wrench to change the sandpaper... then I realized that a knob sticking out would get in the way. Oh well, I'll build mine with normal wood screws.

    • @robstephens
      @robstephens Před rokem

      Maybe use a through screw with a knob nut on one side only.

    • @IBuildItScrapBin
      @IBuildItScrapBin  Před rokem +1

      It would take literally decades for the screw threads to wear out, unless you are changing the sandpaper 4 or 5 times a day. No need to overbuild it with threaded inserts or lose a second of time thinking about it.
      And no need to over complicate it to make it easier to loosen the screw - it's a workshop tool and you'll generally find workshop tools (like the right screwdriver) in a workshop to use with it.

    • @adamj91
      @adamj91 Před rokem +1

    The bags mostly do not get recycled. They are thrown out by the recyclers even. The bottle is easily recycled. So that's the issue. The bags just don't get recycled.

    • @IBuildItScrapBin

      The issue is the apathetic and largely ignorant public who are easily fooled by the virtue signalling that all politician engage in today.
      Fact is, recycling is a money losing business and only exists because it's supported by tax dollars. Even then, only 5% of the collected plastic actually gets recycled. The rest is thrown away or shipped overseas where they dump it straight into the ocean.

Apparently some genius discovered that trees are a renewable product😂 We also get charged $.08 each for any bag, plastic or paper. Plastic shopping bags are a problem for the recyclers. Because they are so thin and are hard to rip (due to the type of plastic used), they clog up the machines that grind up plastic bottles and other things. They have to shut down the system to unclog the machine - lost productivity in a low profit industry makes it unprofitable to recycle. Eliminate the source of non-productivity (bags) and the industry continues. Just follow the money.
