Frank walks us through the painting of this great latex zombie mask made by his friend Tim Shea. There are many different ways to paint it, and Frank shows us how to use rubber cement paint to bring out the sculpture's details and layer on a fun color scheme.

Thanks for watching! - Věda a technologie
"Art's never finished, It's abandoned", that's both beautiful and sad.
Davinci was a smart man.
Thanks I really did my best.
(. ) _ (. )
I really like this quote!
MonkeyShaman with that emoji, I just see two boobs and a line 😂😂
I absolutely love this format! Brilliant. To have the casual as-it-happening conversation with a constant timelapse, so there's never a lull, really refreshing.
I also loved the moment at the end where we hang on Franks quote and the piano flourishes to an end, just a lovely moment, gratz to the editor :)
I concur, the production on these videos keeps getting better. Pretty soon Tested will have to move to Vimeo!
I fully agree with what you said. I actually found myself complaining a couple of times on tested videos and giving critisism. So.. :) I dont feel above it to then take a moment and report that this video was really pleasant to watch. Love the format as you expressed already.
+OohzyJohnDow I agree a little bit. I just want a little better editing on videos like the ones where they make models.
It was actually Norm playing that piano romantically while Frank was painting this mask.
As a scenic artist I find these videos about different mediums super enlightening.
"Art is never finished, it's abandoned."
Gold
a great old quote
The painter ain't dead,
He's just resting.
I am currently enrolled in a SFX school and they teach us that to paint a foam latex mask to paint with acrylics and prosaid, 50/50 ratio. Then to finish with a translucent setting powder. It's interesting to see what others in the profession use. Loved it anyway!
Well, Foam Latex and MASK Latex are completely different.
That jazz on the background makes this so relaxing to watch. Love it!
Top quality vid. The mask looks great and the commentary style works perfectly for these timelapse bits.
I love the quote at the end, 'Art is never finished only abandoned.' - Da Vinci. I live by those words as an artist there comes a point in a piece when you just have to say it's good. More so with weathering, people can get really out of hand and true layer after layer really brings together the details and makes things pop and look great on camera you have to find a limit where you put the brush down and stop.
Zombie looks great love the washes and details.
Beautiful artwork that highlights the sculpt
My fav tested video in a long time! Relaxing, talking about the technical and artistic processes. It's up there with the astronaut kit painting!
this was awesome! this is what tested is all about!
I like this format.
As someone who's spent five years in art school with tutors who were very picky about the paints we used, I've learned that the difference between cheap and expensive paints is the amount of solvent used to dilute the paint, and the size of the pigment particles. Expensive paint will have finer pigments, and sometimes more pigment too, which means fewer coats to get coverage. Great video though! 😊
This is an amazing paint job; I paint Miniatures but I would love to try this out. Thanks for posting this vid!
loved the paint job Frank
That is a killer paint job!!
Art is never finished, only abandoned
― Leonardo da Vinci
Intresting to see how you work when you paint it. Thanks. Have a great week
Excellent job. i know nothing about painting but I can appreciate good work. looks awesome.
My first thought on seeing this was using these methods to customize off the shelf latex masks. Very interesting and fun video.
I really like this format ;) I'm always happy when you guys upload.
Great tips. Thanks Tested!
I love this videos with Frank.
I really like the feel of Tested with the current personnel-don't get me wrong, everyone who has contributed has brought something to it. I just believe that it has coalesced into a solid focused project (in front of the camera, & behind the scenes) thanks!
Beautiful work, and a good video of it. Thanks.
I really liked this format for painting.
this looks awesome. Very good video. explained a lot.
Thank you for making this video. Always a cherished time watching these videos and seeing your process.
That's such a beautiful design 😍
this looks like something that'd be related to the gorillaz
I know it's wrong ... but..it reminds of some one...
+Sharepie ..yes..yes..you got that right....my childhood neighbor had same ears.
yeah i saw the same style in this mask, glad somebody notice too.
Steve Buscemi, lol
ethan!!
Great quote to finish off :) also really like how you guys cut this video, was a lot easier to watch than some of the other ones on painting
So many things to like about this video. That mask. That paint job. Inspiring.
"I am actually just shoving some brown up into there."
Been there dude.
looks amazing!
loved it looks straight out of ParaNorman also it gives me a district 9 feel when I see it from the side
Awesome work.
This was one of the coolest and most useful tested videos yet.
love this format guys.. keep it up.
loved the phrase at the end! So true!
Great Work Frank!
This is so great! Looks fantastic. Very informative. I do my vehicle like this and want to explore different color themes, that's cool the naptha does not effect the latex adversely.
great video all round.
more from Frank please
glad to see that adams doing well scince mythbusters and that tested allows him to do stuff that he enjoys like one day builds.
its relaxing to see another artist do their job when you know the struggle!
Thanks Frank! Great to see the process. =)
Great video and tutorial.
Love this video style.
Good choice in music. enjoyed everything about this video
Boy am I glad I watched this!
Frank's new shop space probably makes filming less cramped! Cool stuff!
dude this is off the chain so sick !
This is amazing I want to to try something like this sometime
Nice video. Thoughtful.
The shirt with snakes on it is really cool
Very good video! I liked the time laps with commentary. Also, really sad that mask mold isn't in use, it's a pretty fun zombie one!
Holy video quality Batman! Sweet mask too.
I love this caricature look, goofy, spooky, kooky Ed Rothesque look.
The sculpt is so dam insane
i am absolutely in love with that character!! i love the idea of a funny friendly drunk zombie :D and he sorta reminds me of the skeletons from corpse bride :)
Anyone know the title of the music that was playing? It was very relaxing. Also great video tested this format really worked out great
More! Please!
Nice one bro 💯💯🔥🔥😎😎
"Art's never finished, it's abandoned" Wow... Never thought about it that way but it's stunningly accurate! o.0
Wow amazing
love this skull
I loved the music on this one, very chillaxed. How do the eyes work on this mask? Is there a net or something?
I thought this was a zombie Gollum. :)
Awesome job.
Hey Frank, I am an aspiring maker and in this videoI noticed you mention "crappy chemicals." Could you and Norm do a shop video where you can talk about chemical safety, when you need a respirator and when not when working with the various toxic things we like to play with?
I would have been happy with it just after the brown wash lol, it turned out really awesome in the end though!
I really like this mask.
So cool
Lovely music!
Yeah that's badass
that zombie is adorable i can totally see him in a cartoon or something
Great video... I've just bought a michael myers elrod mask to convert and I've finished it using black acrylic and water for the weathering and then just a few bits of dry brushing the jowl lines and lips etc... I did this straight onto the mask how it came as the paint job was ok... Now its dry parts of the heavy weathering can be rubbed off in a pealing fashion if i apply lots of pressure and rub with my finger... Should i have sealed it once I'd finished? It would obviously need to be flexible as its latex and I'd want it matt and not shiny... Any help will do as i only seem one step away from having a great looking mask for myself.... Thank you 👍🏼😁🎃
Can silicone be painted in a similar way?
Great video!
AWESOME!!!! So you could wipe the VMatte off again with alcohol and paint over again with another color? Thanks for the reply.
oh man this smooth jazz sandin me right to sleep
Really like the format on this video. anyone know the song that was playing during the time lapse?
Damn, this is inspiring, I want to work with this stuff now.
Took me 20 years of painting to get to the skill level. I know like myself, Frank is capable of so much more. This was just a speed paint job to show off for tested. Keep practicing, never be afraid to jump right in. You'll get there.
*Liked* before I ever watched the video :D
same xD
Same here.
Could you use talcum powder instead of v-matte to eliminate the tackiness of the rubber cement? Or would it just turn into a sort of paste and rub off?
Do you have tutorials on how to make a good skull analogue or zombie head analogue if a person wants to make it but has no access to professional equipment?
this very much reminded me of the Mr Rogers picture picture naration videos.
And maybe -- maybe we put in a happy little boil here. Just like that. Just let it happen.
Going to do a 2 million sub special episode?
Can this technique be used for both foam and liquid latex? Only tested acrylics + prosaide before!
I didn't catch what the last product that was used was called? :O the final coat the sealed the paint and kept it from being sticky?
That was so fuckin beautiful and chill
Milk frother as mixer? Nice
I jumped when he said Tim Shay lol
Say you use this technique on a Batman cowl, how will the paint hold up with flexing during putting it on your head and taking it off?
is the bottle with the red tape around it that he uses, distilled water or some kind of baby oil ?
Do you think spray paint would mix with rubber cement and another thinner than naphta? I want to paint rubber foot soles. And don't want the paint to crack.Any ideas?
Great video and cool mask, but I wish it was in normal speed and longer, like 30 mins or something.
Hi! Please, tell me what is in the bigger bottle with the red mask sticker on it? Water? Thinner?
Im going to give this paint a try sometime soon, I've been using latex mask paints from monster makers and I'm honestly very sick of it and the trouble its been giving me! Its chunky, hard to work with, impossible to brush on, and has ruined hundreds and hundreds of dollars in airbrush guns!
same problem with me. Switched to rubber cement, works really good with brushes, but still working on airbrush ratio. Tends to clog it quite a bit.
That was peaceful.
Arts never finished, it's abandoned! Great quote
Hi can i use this same method to repaint a store bought latex mask that already has color for example a tan or beige or gray color. But i want to repaint it lime bright green. How can i achieve this ? Just paint over it or what would be the process since its already painted
The difference between the different grades of paint is the ratio of pigment. The better grades have much more pigment than the lower ones.
