- I'm playing on Chess.com -- these aren't sponsored videos but the site seems pretty cool.
Chess has been having a resurgence in popularity this year so I have finally acquiesced to semi-popular demand and started to play a bit. First, let's hone our skills and get a little more warmed up and then let's conquer chess dot com one board gamer at a time.

About this game:
the horse moves like an L - Hry
NL coming with some strong "Dad look I did a cool thing in chess" energy for the beginning of this one, and I've gotta say on behalf of all of us we're very proud of you and that's a lovely smothered mate
"ya winning son?" "yes dad"
@@hellwroughtangel Gonna be more of an ''Ya winning dad?'' ''Yes Luna'' in a couple years
"Mom get the camera"
Perfectly identified energy
I'm here for it and y'know what the more he plays the better as far as I'm concerned
Tries to move to G7 when it would put him in check. Misses G7 to avoid checkmate :(
This is the only time in the entire series I think I've seen something NL didn't. I was trying to figure out why it would've been a bad move because I felt like if it was a good move it was so obvious!
Not to dunk on the egg at all I'm like 400 elo and the series is dummy pogged lmao
came here looking for this comment 😔🤘
Ok, so glad I wasn't alone in seeing it because I thought I was missing why he wouldn't just move to G7 to prevent the mate.
@@nich3897 what's pog about chess is even if you're not good overall finding good moves like a little puzzle is always a dopamine hit
It's actually a perpetual, he could have draw'd the game right there :(
I love it how nl managed to accurately identify the threat, then proceded to underrestimate it and fail to respond haha
i mean the actual threat was q+h7 checkmate not the fork
Z
15:40 "I believe this is the second-best move" right after the one that puts your own king in checkmate
I tried playing Chess for the first time in at least a decade because of these videos and man, I have way more respect for NL I didn’t realise how little i knew.
Welcome to chess community
Yeah watching NL play 1500's I'm constantly seeing their mistakes and missed tactics...
Yet when I play I'm an 800 and I'm lucky to go a game without at least one blunder.
It's weird how much better your vision of a game is when you aren't playing it.
@@TheRealHungryHobo we have no pressure as spectators, we effectively have no tunnel vision on lines
@@TheRealHungryHobo lol occasionally i'll spot a tactic that an IM i'm watching missed. More commonly though I'll think I saw something he missed and then later realize he didn't miss it, it was just not as good a move as I thought.
If you are looking for a good starting point software wise get ChessMaster The Art of Learning. Think it is like the 11th edition. Has Josh Waitzkin in the project. There is an academy that goes through tons and tons of material. Like basic pawn moves up to check mate patterns and stuff. The course takes a few hours to complete. Even if you already know how to play it is actually a very good tool
When the Jokair opening meets the Pennywaize gambit, you get just as much POG as a NL chess video.
This might be the funniest fucking comment in the whole of the NL youtube-verse
that's the Homaigah mate
@@432pro The Grip Sou defense
@@ThePapets buddy the Earfquake attack refuted that years ago
@@shizam6870 have you seen the move quick strategy that's been destroying lately?
That analysis at the start was super interesting! More analysis of your off-camera games sounds pretty pog to me
Apparently the Checkmate was so cheeky that NL decided to come up with a new word to describe how deeply he's examining it.
I love these chess videos, thanks man
I saw when you posted this on Twitter, but giving us a run through of the games you play in your free time helps contextualize a lot of the information I missed as a novice trying to understand your moves! I'm sure you have plenty of other games that are as good as this one was, and I'm all for extra analysis if it's something you want to regularly/occasionally add to the chess videos! Thanks for the content NL.
15:17 - Egg discusses the merits of moving into check, while unironically talking about how it makes his king less protected.
That's a pretty nice smothered mate my dude
So basically that first game was a Chess pacifist run
except for the poor pawn that NL -took- mercilessly slaughtered
He would have killed the king next turn also. It just doesn't show it's to keep chess family friendlym
To be honest I’d love to see some longer matches. I feel like the clock has really been putting a lot of pressure on NL to just go, and a longer timer that let him fully reason things through would be so cool to see.
15 + interval would be poggy
21:26 “you loose the game blunder” that is the most Canadian I think I’ve ever heard you sound
I was screaming Kg7 there awwww
He is still in trouble, but there is no mate, right?
@@zacharytheliar Nope, no mate and he can actually retain a substantial advantage
Yeah I had the same feeling i felt so bad for him
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who was yanking their hair out on that one!!
@@adorablehorrorfrombeyond1462 False, it's a draw by perpetual... still better than getting m8'd though... :(
My husband asked me this morning: “Aren’t these videos boring to you? You’re just watching a guy play chess.”
I told him no. I’m enjoying the commentary and analysis of the games. I’ve reached peak nerd with these videos and I’m not ashamed. Clearly, others agree. The views on these videos are huge.
Not even a chess master. Just one guy who's mediocre at the game. Yet here we are.
@@elijahagustino3605 It’s a skill level that I figure I can achieve. He’s relatable and listening to NL is like listening to a friend tell me why his move sucked.
Your husband is missing out on these amazing pogs
@@ImEverythingYouCrave Absolutely. He just can’t fathom the pogicity of this man’s plays.
watching chess is sick because you can still look for good moves but there's no stress to you as a viewer that you'll do something dumb
Openings manual is what i call the Kama Sutra
Surely that's a manual for mating positions?
The title is cracking me up, “chess” isn’t even in parenthesis anymore lol. It’s just a short run on sentence
Profound Boomer energy, gotta love it
I like this series chess
chess my queen
Is NL an SEO genius or just showing his boomer energy?
No he's playing a new variant, ever-chess
"I've been trying new openings"
I sense the GROB is nearby... Hide the women and children!
He's done it at least once
@@etiennechaplais1764 And won (without as much skill as a win from that opening deserved)
The opponent was threatening mate in 1 and NL is like what if his knight moves to put me in check
If the opponent had saw that like I did, he would've taken it in a heartbeat. I couldn't believe it because I thought that's what he was setting up for.
He wasn’t threatening M1 for the same reason the knight move was impossible. As soon as the bishop got blocked, NL stopped (that) mate.
I think this guy should start making attacking and defensive moves at the same time
18:20 - Sacrificing your queen to take the knight may have accomplished something.
The innocence and purity of that first part
Yo NL with the Smothered Checkmate, my favorite mating method. It's so good, you love to see it.
phrasing
@@ImEverythingYouCrave I'm used to phrasing problems when it comes to chess lol
I would totally watch more post game analysis like this. Great game NL, I love your chess videos
The word zany has been ruined for me forever.
Zany is dead, long live Rojo Caliente
Love the chess videos NL, keep them coming!
My uncle taught me to play the scotch game as a child. I wish we could have played Chess together instead
Oh man i had to read that twice
Don't get it?
Why's it always the uncles? lol
Not seeing kg7 in the first game was heartbreaking. Loved the vid as always!
if youre looking for chess openings to learn i think the kings gambit for white is very fun to play/watch. very quick to learn imo and very dangerous for both players opening the game for very tactical play from the get go. not sure if it holds up at the highest level of chess play, but fun especially in blitz or bullet as the attack on blacks king is always presented within the first 5 or so moves into the game.
Fried liver/traxler is a very poggified opening if you know what you are doing, but man do I hate playing against it.
I very approve of the braggadocios beginning absolutely poggged checkmate there NL.
17:50 Move the King!!!! Nooooo!! lol
Love the chess videos mate
Wow NL is really good at talking out his thought process. I am learning a lot.
I avoided these chess videos for a while, idk why, but now I’m hooked😂 looks like I’m playing chess for the next few months
10 minute (chess) is getting my pog juices flowing and my gourd moisturized with pog
I don't know why but I'm still watching these but something about it draws you in to look for the solution. I hope to see some more book moves one day just so you can gloat at the computer about learning.
That 3 minute game was a nice miniature. Well Played NL
What you're saying about elo is very true. And another thing i've realized is that Rapid chess (10 minutes+) is easier at lower elos... usually meaning a 200 point higher elo than blitz/bullet. Essentially a 1300 blitz player is about as good as a 1500 rapid player. This becomes no longer true as you reach higher elos in rapid, because the games are more well thought out, and they tend to draw more and are just harder for high level players to gain a large advantage. Meaning that the top elos for rapid are around 2700-2800 while the top elos for blitz and bullet (at least on chess.com) are 3000+.
18:00 made me cry, he had an out
That was a really nice game NL. Being proud of yourself is not being braggadocios. Great video :)
"This is such an aggressive delivery, and now he's just looking at his phone and walking away." this is me on any doordash job that requests me to knock on the door. it feels so awkward to knock on someone's door as a complete stranger so I just try to Bogart it and leave as non-nonchalantly as possible.
Bro i remember watching northernlion play isaac when i was little now i randomly get recommended his chess vids this is awesome
My man needs to turn two click moves to avoid those misclicks.
That checkmate was a great example of pushing your threats and capitalizing on their mistake. They shouldve realized they needed to cut their losses on the queen and try to recover but they got greedy
I need more content with Levy man. Played chess at school a tiny bit with friends but never got to actually studying openings (~850 elo on the website,) I need to learn more to acquire maximum pog from this content.
NL, here's the timing classification:
1 minute? it's bullet
3 min? 5 min? it's blitz
10 min to 30 min? that's rapid
Love your sweater/shirt, brother
NL so excited to upload this one that he didn't even put Chess in parens
nice smothered mate! Now you need a knight promotion mate for maximum cheekiness
NL love the chess vids been watching you since Bart's nightmare. It's been a ride bro
Damn, Egg Daddy is going for smothering mates now. He is truly going to become GM soon.
"very strong move, just agnostically"
Finally. I haven't heard "agnostically good" in ages.
Starting off with a bonus smothered mate, nice
I don't usually audibly say 'that was sick' when watching a chess match
But that cheeky checkmate was pretty sick.
The classy smothered mate
Hello northern lion love your videos!
I'm proud of you for that first mate
20:52 Is that the first time he's said 'weird' all video? Did he keep himself from saying it that whole previous game? I'm impressed!
My dude repeatedly ignoring the AI repeatedly telling him to move pawn to f5 was hard to see.
Under the best move is the anticipated line that would follow, so you don't have to guess what the best next moves are... just follow that line to see what the computer is seeing.
I yelled at that last one. HE COULD GET OUT, OH MY GOD HE JUST GAVE UP
hotly anticipated
This was so good
Opponent: *has checkmate*
NL: “‘Tis but a fork”
cheerful Christmas cheeky checkmate
Dang brother that was a good checkmate. Definitely good job finding that one.
Ah, a smothered mate. Outstanding
NL what are your thoughts on Chess 960 aka Fischer Random? (For those not in the know, it's Chess with a semi-random arrangement of the non-pawn pieces.) It's a nice alternative because it's less relient on studying specific openings and more on general theory.
I was screaming at my monitor when he didn't see the king could move to avoid checkmate
7:15 NL tries some Dan tricks
listening back, that was an aggressive delivery sheesh
Baron Egg is able to see so many more moves into the future than I can. XD
What the fuck is going on in my life I literally lept out of my chair and yelled with excitement when I saw his analysis of the off-camera game
Man 17:20 had me screaming king g7 for 40 seconds straight no breather
Lovely vids nevertheless
I would love to see you play some 30 minute chess, with lots of commentary.
Man I wish you could propose takebacks like in over the board chess
At 10:35 b3 to d5 would be omega powerful. You take with queen he takes with knight. You take with pin he takes queen.
Oh, analysis went over that lol
Dont make us wait ever again!!!
Please learn the Evans gambit. It’s so much fun
Very proud of the Pogged Out Check Mate 🤯🤯🤯
Let’s gooooooo dude🔥🔥🔥
More scotch openings would be pog
Saw this one on Twitter. Laughed out loud when I saw it.
thanks for the company
I was screaming at the screen when he just let himself be mated because he didn't see Kg7.
But the egg is also a human and it happens.
I love the chess videos so much, so entertaining to see you puzzle things out and "get crazy" to mess with your opponent's head. Keep it up NL!
That was the move the king next to the night right?? Allas he threw that game. Also he could have prevented any vhance by moveing the queen down one right away.
From the position at 24:55, why not take the pawn at F4? Nothing is protecting the square and white has no threats.
@@benjaminfitzgerald2037 thanks, don't know why I didn't see that.
That was a pretty cheeky mate. Never say Ryan doesn’t have cheeks
The gall on this mad lad.
13:30 I was screaming knight to B3
Absolutely fantastic chess mah egglord!
yo that first mate was super pog
MORE POGGY CHESS LETS GO!
I would recommend to watch 1 or 2 of Danniel Naroditsky videos of his speedrun. Its the most instructive content you will find and it will help you immensely.
King G7 at the end would have forced the queen to stay to protect the knight
I understand my King is in grave danger, but tell me good sir would you like to engage in a mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmtrade
Duuuude a smoothered mate sexiest mate ever
Hey @Northernlion, if you want to learn some openings, I saw that GothamChess just released a video not to loon ago going over all the openings, might want to check it out.
Shows off smothered mate, next game can't figure out why king can't go to g7 with opposing knight on h5. The vagaries of the chess mind.
18:11 Why not move kG7?
