- Hey guys! Vlog Episode 7 here, from a few days spent in the sleepy surf town of Dominical. I didn’t score anything epic here, and I found the waves very tricky to surf-lots of closeouts! However, I hope this video gives you some insights into what surfing in Dominical is actually like.

Just a few more comments/ recommendations regarding Dominical from someone that has spent considerable amount of time in that water surfing and photography. The mid tides are best and yes the river mouth has more/ better surf, but do not rule out the beachies to the north or south as options. There are plenty of less crowded waves. Yes, it is a very fast wave. Angle your take offs and use the edges of the rips for shoulder rides followed up by a easy rip current paddle back out (sometimes). Pura Vida!
Epic info mate!! Thank you :)
Thanks so much Dan for the shout out! We are so happy you liked our hotel. It was a pleasure meeting you and I hope you enjoyed the rest of your time in Costa Rica.😎🌴☀️🤙🏼🏄🏻♂️
That waterfall was epic 🤙🏽
So refreshing after the walk!!
Me and a couple of buddies rented a house in Dominical 20 years ago. It was like the Wild West! Anything goes! There was only one restaurant/bar, a small store with a fusball table, a soccer field, one lady with a washer and dryer and a hippie couple that would walk around selling muffins and bread. We hooked up with some hot chicks and had them hang around for the month which was nice. We surfed the beach break a lot and scored the left/right point reefs a couple of miles south of town ( firing ) a few times. Good times for sure🏄🏼♂️
Started coming here to CR in the late 80's. Moved here full time 20 years ago. Those were the best times ever here. If I could turn the clock back, I would in a heartbeat.
🙏✌️❤️was just there! Great spot
Florestral retreat center is a cool place to stay 20 mins up the road. You might get to drink some mystic brew.
La punta is good, and a beach called hermosa to the south(not the famous spot)is really fun in the north corner
Yes Punta Dominical is an awesome wave. Playa Hermosa(not the famous one lol) can be fun, but the wave is similar to Jaco beach.
@@cjgamer2140 if u go all the way to the north corner, the mountain comes straight down and it pushes off into a split peak. The left has a channel that sucks u out along the mountain, the rightstands up more like back door!!!
@@cjgamer2140 spent 15 days driving around Pacific coast. It was my second time there. The Hermosa in dominical has a big blue cross in the side of the mountain....kinda creepy
Just wanna say, I see a lot of pro surfers out there who never ride their backhand, you're out here doing both so props to you
Dan, mate great to see you still out on the road on surf missions, fantastic! Watched your video on Super Bank here on Southern GC/Tweed Heads Aus....Yeah awesome wave, it does get hectic with crowd and DBar, heaps of beachies around the area lest hectic...But....those DBar, Super Bank and Kirra waves are always the gems when you hook a good one.... I'm happy in the 2-4ft range lol.... Happy travels mate 🤙🐬🏄🌴
Love your videos! When you're ready to take some more long bus rides and hikes, check out the Osa Peninsula down south. I scored a solid week of great waves at this time of year with a few friendly locals in Matapalo. Of course that was many, many years ago and it could be swarming like a stomped ants nest with tourists and condos by now LOL. Also careful of the notoriously venomous fer-de-lance snakes. Safe and joyous travels to you.
Cool!!! 🤙🤙🤙
Thanks for sharing as always my friend Be well and Safe travels 👍🤙
Ha! I was on the beach shooting the contest!
Bro you have to know where to go right now with direction of swell….. come to the guanacaste area
I’ll be there after next week… I hope I get lucky 🤙
@@jessepipia619 I love Guany, but this time of year it's usually better central and south pacific. Guany season has the offshore winds from Nov. to March. Not saying you can't score up there, but the offshores aren't as consistent up there in May. Have a nice trip.
Thanks Dan your having fun stay safe
Your surfing is looking good, almost landed that alley-oop. Looks like a good time there.
Thank you!! I'll land one of those one day ;)
Another sick video Dan. Next time you head back, check out La Preciosa.
Thanks mate :)
Surfing near the river mouth always sketched me out 🐊but nobody was rly surfing near it while I was there :)
Ya I always find it interesting how common advice to avoid Crocs is to avoid river mouths, but common advice for the best waves is to go near the river mouths. Also, they say don't paddle across the tamarindo river mouth to playa grande but the tamarindo river mouth is a surf spot itself...
Hahah yeah for sure, I thought about that a few times for sure!
hey dan nice videos bro,i dont know where you are in the world, but i live here in uruguay, its nice,if you want to come i can give the tips,i guess you never been here,we have, punta del este,la paloma, rocha i guess it could be a nice video especially rocha with all the nature and the waves, safe travels! yeww!
Hey mate!! Epic, yeah I'd love to come down and check Uruguay out someday, so thanks for the heads up... Not sure if I'll make it this year though!
Great video Dan 👍
Thank you :)!
you seem to do a lot of long difficult travel for small average beachies i could understand if you were going to pumping reef breaks
Hahah tell me about it mate 😂
yo i'm always pouring sweat on these trips as well LOL domi gets HEAVYYYY and obviously has butter angles sometimes just like hermosa does .... I know some serious barrel riders right there ;)
Yeah It must get so good sometimes!! I got pretty skunked this last trip to CR too be honest haha!
Think playa Hermosa is a better break!Brian's hostel cool spot 30 colones with ac!,right on the beach!
brian from florida? wife and a son?
Again same as Hermosa. Big long period swell = big closeouts most of the time unless the bars are good and the swell is correct. I heard Punta Dominical was firing during the contest. It's a left point break that breaks over a rock bottom. That's where you should have been. Also local tip. There is a free waterfall/swimming hole called pozo azul not far from town that is nice. Enjoy the rest of your trip. I hope you score. P.S. you should try to get to Esterillos and I will introduce you to my home break El Pico. Pura Vida.
Yeah for sure!! Thanks for the info mate! We actually went to that waterfall but there was hardly any water haha!!
@@DanHarmon123 lol. It has been a brutal dry season this year.
It’s been 28 years since I’ve been there… triggering some deep memories
I hate to say it, but unfortunately it isn't like it was 28 years ago my friend. Cherish those memories.
dan the mannnn. love that you're travelling with your sister. how long she around for? your surfing seems to be on point lately despite the challenging beachie conditions; seems like you're progressing! even more instructional info could be interesting
Yo mate!! Thank you so much... Yeah I want to start putting more effort (and sharing insights) into getting better at surfing actually. She was only out for a few weeks in CR unfortunately! I'm in Nica now solo!
@@DanHarmon123 yeww enjoy, hope you get toobs
This dude is good 🤙🙏
Could you somehow quantify what your daily budgets can be depending on how you travel? When you're trying to be spontaneous in what you explore, do you have a rough spending limit for the day in your head?
Hey mate!! To be honest not really a strict daily budget! I just try and keep between $200-300 per week including everything :)
Dominical is a good wave when it’s on. The only problem is the sea lice.
I bet!! Oh yeah they got me a few times haha ;)
Thanks for the info , doesn’t look very good so I don’t need to go there!
Alway looks like you’re more intent on showing off your surfing skills, than flowing and enjoying the place more
She’d that weight too many boards
Hahah!! Could do with snapping one ;)
Dominical is fun. Monkey Point! And I took the horses to the falls. Incredible trip. I also had some locals show me some spots a little further south and surfed Quepos to the north too❤
Did you score the jetty in Quepos? It rarely breaks good but when it does it is one of my favorite waves in the country. Plus it's only a 30 minute drive from my house. Pura Vida.
@@cjgamer2140 Yes we scored the jetty! It was clean and head high
It's not a low tide break! Low tide is not the surf tide! Your not getting the tides right! And why would you go on a surf trip riding buses everywhere?? Low budget or something? Is this video for a low budget surf trip?
Didn’t seem like an either ride break to be honest haha! Was either low tide closeouts, that could be steep if you found a corner, or fat closeout re-forms at high tide! And yes exactly that! Super low budget… Costa Rica is pricey 🫣
@@DanHarmon123 don't forget, swell direction also matters!
Love the Costa Rica vids. Nice job doing it on a budget. Busses are fun.
@@DanHarmon123 I appreciate your videos here I go to Jaco Beach in August and yeah, it’s very tidy so the incoming high tide is the time to surf , 🏄♂️ I’ve been to Dominical way back in 2001. I don’t remember how it was but now since you went there, I can tell this part of the coast is affected by the tides and closeouts from the outgoing tide anyway, thanks for this very nice exposé because I haven’t been there in years. I appreciate it very much and the fall you went to that’s cool. I might be able to take the bus there since I do travel with the bus cause I don’t wanna drive. I drive all the time seven days a week back home.
Dan, When you wake up, walk out and go surfing you are living like a millionaire.
I'd watch more but that music's absolutely f****** terrible to listen to bro
Copyright free stuff generally is mate... But you can't use any song you like on CZcams unfortunately :(
