So you hit the booms, go north further past Monty's and you'll find epic uncrowded surf in Jiquilillo by the inlet to the estuary. If you are really adventurous, keep going north towards the Gulf of Fonseca and it is unspoiled surf heaven.

There's a few reasons why I stopped surfing. This is one of them. Most locals in those spots are dumb and aggressive. Equal parts.

Surfing is awesome. Surfers are selfish assholes. I still surf, but kiting and wing foiling are way more fun nowadays. Glad I got Barra 20 years ago with minimal crowds.

Lived in Puerto Rico in mid 90s it was more hostile than any of those places. There are places you cannot surf unless you are local. Guy from Virginia got stabbed and they rapped his girlfriend outside of San Juan. Not sure how it is today.

Morocco is awesome if you are with a surf guide or group - the locals respect you as you surf with guys they’ve known their whole lives. They don’t like guys travelling in vans and cars who don’t pay for accomodation because they aren’t giving much to the community. That’s what I found speaking to some locals, but I got some all time waves down there, love that place

Santa Cruz like spots like the Lane and Pleasure Point, and all the smaller unknown spots in between in the 80s-early 00s was super localized. Lunada Bay. Big Rock in La Jolla

I find that having dark brown skin goes a long way in the water in Hawaii. I'm Latino, born and raised in SoCal, but I lived on Kauai in the 90's and I had always heard stories about localism in the water but I absolutely never experienced it. Now I'm in my mid 50's and I find it funny that when I vacation in Hawaii haole surfers pretty much stay out of my way, even though they're probably local and I'm the tourist. As a bodyboarder I find it especially funny. I would probably have the same experience at any of the Latin surf spots on the list..

if you`re still coming to Bali for a surfing holiday, you have lost control over your life. You complain about Bingin, but it`s everywhere. Unless you live here and know a few spots and setups when they work. Bingin is a short wave, and when Ulus is to big or crowded, ppl flood Bingin. As a holiday surfer you don`t have any standing there. So why would anyone let you get the nuggets? Surfing is a frustrating sport.

Should also note. When renting and riding a motobike in Bali, it is fairly common to get pulled over by the police where they ask for a motorcycle license and papers. This is a common tourist tax, so expect to cough up a few rupiahs!
