Surfing Nicaragua’s “Private” Beachie… (VLOG EP8)

- Hey guys! Welcome to another VLOG Episode. Playa Colorado is one of the best (and most crowded) waves in Nicaragua. But it’s a break where accessibility becomes an issue. The beach resorts here don’t allow anyone to access the beach with surfboards from the land (seriously, they check your car at the gate), so the only way to surf it is by walking from a neighbouring beach or boat.
I didn’t score it this time, but surf spot privatisation is something I strongly disagree with, which is one of the reasons I made this video… Thanks for the support, as always :))

The channel that no one knew they needed, thanks Dan!
Hahah, thanks Peter!
Great to see some high quality beach footage! 🤙🏽 keep em coming Dan!
Your surfing is improving keep up the good work living the dream! Some of the best rides I’ve seen you get absolutely ripping kid!
Thanks John!! Can't wait to keep improving...
Such a great channel - not too much filler and B roll - just straight to what is important and interesting . Your front side is looking great - some moments remind me of Dan Malloys style
Thank you!! Glad you like the style :)
Looked pretty damn fun to me Thanks for sharing as always my friend Be well and Safe travels 👍🤙
Yeah I wont lie, it was super fun!! Thanks as always Michael :)
Lovin the vlogs, keepin it real. Yeww!
Thanks mate :))
Dan your vlogs are awesome. SImple and honest. Now i click on all of them
Thank you so much!!
Shredding it. Awesome video 👍🤙
Thanks mate :)
I surfed all over central america from mid 90s to mid 2000s, really enjoying your films Dan. My favourite place around this area was to stay at Astillero and walk over to Lance's left/get a boat to Playgrounds. Hope you score both. And get some footage, so I can enjoy from dreary London:) Of course when I was doing this everyone said you should have been here in the 80s....
Nice work bro, awesome channel 💪
Appreciate your channel a lot, Dan!
Stoked to hear it :)
You got some decent surf! It’s still fun! Keep surfing! Aloha ke akua!
Yeah definitely can't complain!! Super fun for turns :)
I did the same trek in! I paddled round the rocks but. Got a coupla at that wedge
Sick!! Yeah gotta paddle if it's bigger and high tide... had some sketchy rock runs haha
Wow I got better less crowded waves on the Gold Coast this week, with a free car park!
One of the best beach breaks in Central America when it’s on!
I was thinking the river needs to break open for it to get good n I see your subtitle 😂 amazing wave once it does!
Yeah needed more rain! Pretty sure they dug it out the day after I left haha...
It was nice meeting you surfing at Satana. Great video as always, mahalo
Thanks mate!!
Great wave surfed it 15 years ago one of the best surfs on that trip I had
I know this wave gets good but imagine paying two to $300 a day to stay in a private gated community with a bunch of frothing Canadians driving golf carts and only for beach break. Same goes for the boom up north that wave has been so over advertised and monetize on Instagram Yes it's a hollow beach break but there are hundreds of people in the lineup every morning it is absolutely ridiculous
Yeah it's crazy!!
Yeah man, I did the whole boom thing. Looks great in photos but the reality is very different. Caught some fun ones, but most were close outs. I can't really say I had the time of my life. Overall, just what you said -- overhyped
Was just there last month and booked a 3 bedroom condo right behind the pool club for $100 a night. Split it 4 ways, $25 a night. We must’ve gotten lucky because we surfed a few days where there was no one really out and perfect 3-4 ft barrels. It helped that we could see the waves from the balcony bc it would be blown out and crap one second and then just turn on for a couple hours and surf with only a couple people out.
True warrior! No what you mean about money?still ripping, looking forward to the book!let's go
Hey do films you from the beach or do you have some kind of camera that follows you?
did u surfed panga drops, the break next to colorados.
How do you get footage of yourself in new places? Thanks!
Love the videos mate! Do u live in England or Australia?
Thanks mate!! I live in England, but I spend most of my time on the road :)
Thanks Dan!
good work on this channel. do a post on what you book is about
Thank you! Yeah great idea actually, I'll cook something up!
Good work ❤
Thank you!!
Hey Dan thank you for all your great videos You really have a good way of telling the stories of surfing. On another note I think you could go deeper in your work and touch base on some larger subjects like the one in this video. For one the privatization of surfing which is a global phenomenon that has been happening for a while but seems to be gathering momentum. From the private surf guide tours of Southern Mexico to this beach in Nicaragua and the other beach which shall not be mentioned north of Nicaragua which has a private community built by Canadians right in front of it regulating surfaces as well. To me it seems like a very important matter worth shining a camera on, I got into surfing because it was relatively inexpensive and mother nature is free, these days private access paying hundreds of dollars has become common across the world and especially in developing nations where a few people band together to form a bit of a surf cartel to cater to the highest bidder. Making surfing more of a elitist sport such as skiing on a expensive resort mountain. Please let me know your thoughts and maybe make a video about it
Thank you!! Yes, definitely, I think I'm gonna start making those videos more, and that's a really good idea! I actually had that noted as a video idea so when I get home, I'll dive into some research!
I was just there last month. We stayed at a condo right behind the pool club for $100 a night. Got a bunch of barrels, water was in the mid to upper 60s F though. A couple days it was too side shore but def worth it.
Sick mate!! Sounds epic, very jealous!
@@DanHarmon123
lol not as jealous as I am seeing you score all these diff spots in Central America 😆
Whoops excelent!!!
Just pay a panga boat a few bucks to drop you off there...they are probably headed that way anyway to pick up other surfers. You also need to surf Manzanillo point...sick left-hand point break when it's going off.
I can’t put your book down-I’m reliving my youth Dan- Retirement is amazing-going to Vietnam-Da Nang and Phu Quoc in June-I’ll let you know how the surf is!
Hi mate!! Epic, so stoked you're enjoying the book!!
First of all I want to say that you really rip mate. I don't know what sort of delay that's involved in your videos, but i hope that you are in this region like yesterday or a day or so again to see how good Colorados and surounding breaks can really get. Try to get to Manzanillo during a swell if at all possible; another restricted area that needs to be visited by boat but it can be such a great left. Also, you can get to Colorados from the North a bit shorter walk. Wishing you some of the killer surf that is just starting seasonally here.
Thank you so much!! Yeah a few weeks delay at the minute, and saw that it was good! Thanks for the info.. maybe next time :)
Surfings is improving so much man, ripping
Thanks Max, stoked to hear the water time is paying off :))
So you hit the booms, go north further past Monty's and you'll find epic uncrowded surf in Jiquilillo by the inlet to the estuary. If you are really adventurous, keep going north towards the Gulf of Fonseca and it is unspoiled surf heaven.
I enjoyed waves in Popoyo, Santana and Playgrounds further north than I did Playa Colorado when I was there
Santana is a super fun wave!
Did you go to burger night at GFS?!?!
You ever make it to playa negra?
I had a friend with a pilots license and a small plane, and said I was jealous he could fly anywhere he wanted. He told me to start my own business like he did, then buying plane tickets wouldn’t be a problem. That’s what I did, and sounds like you’re on your way as well.
When were you there?
Three weeks ago maybe!?
I was there when hit red code 2 sweel and was insane
Wow, did it hold when it was big??
@@DanHarmon123 yes, huge tubes and the sets scared
nice vids:)
Thank you!!
Damn that sucks, I surfed it in 2009 and there was barely anything there
that's funny. I've always said if you want a good place to surf and write a book, popoyo is the area
Hahah, definitely ;)
So lucky 🍀 man surfing that
Was super fun for turns and yes very lucky :)!
Who films you ?
For this session, I hired a dude called Jose (@photographernica), he's on of the best in this area...highly recommend!
Stand taller. Use your whole body instead of being coiled up tense 100% of the time. Imagine your cruising down the road on a skateboard with a hangover 😅
Love your channel, you're personality and content have tapped into something relatable. Ta
Thanks for the tips mate and stoked you enjoy the vids! However, I think, if anything, I need to be more compact, but bend at the knees and not at the waist!?
@@DanHarmon123 poo stance never works. You need to use your whole body. Kinda like being fully stretched on tip toes dropping into a late drop straight in the barrel then compressing to then stretch and pump. Like how jjf opens up after a bottom turn to lay back hack.
@@DanHarmon123 the vids are awesome. Your content is on point. Really informative and no hype or prenticiousness.
Your channel has convinced me that surfing in central America isn't worth the effort. Seems to just be overcrowded close out beach breaks.
Hahah, plenty of waves not mentioned on this channel though ;)
just need to know where to go. no need to follow the crowds
I think swell direction wasn’t perfect….. possibly
People overestimate how much it is to stay at Colorado's by a long shot , why stay at a shit wave and have to walk in ? Whats your time worth to you I guess is what it boils down to .. ripping that wave btw man , good video
Mate you gotta be stopped
I find it hard to believe how bad the English are at Spanish pronunciation.Fifteen minutes in a classroom could straighten that out.Well worth it!
I didn't know there were multiple ways to pronounce Playa and Colorado ;)
Are you still here in Nicaragua?
Up in El Salvador now!!
Have a great trip! I’ve been.in San Juan del Sur for three years now and am absolutely loving life. If you head back this way at some point I can show you a few great spots. We just had the first push of the season and had some amazing waves. Happy travels!
