@@JLneonhug 😂😂😂😂😂
Yeah, that´ll be much cheaper than buying a new battery! 🙂👍
Rich billed Hoovie a very large amount to fix his battery, with the cost of shipping the car it’s probably cheaper to buy a new battery
Yeah he knows his stuff rich rebuilds could sort you out
I have heard that a failing 12v battery can show signs of the main battery going. Try replacing the 12v battery, or even take it out and get it tested.
Given that the problems were with the computers and they got better when the 12v battery was charged I'd say you're right. It's an easy cheap fix and not much lost if it does not solve all the problems.
I may be wrong but I’m given to believe the “12v” battery is actually a 15v lithium battery and quite expensive! Something like £1500-2500!
@@philipbunker146 ouch!
Cheap old motoring for me!
I totally agree with the rich rebuilds idea. $17k plus $7k is still $8k less than anything else in UK. While rejuvenating battery throws a new twist in having a shop truck/super car/EV.
Go for it Scott. You’ve done a lot more with a lot less. 👍
100% start with the 12v. We are on our 3rd EV over the last 7 years (always been new and I’m not sure I’d trust a used one with out a good warranty), anyway the only issue I’ve ever had was the 12v system and it cocked everything up and through out loads of random faults the weeks before it stopped being able to move.
yes ive seen a dying 12v battery cause fake HV battery errors before. Im presuming its because the BMS for the HV system is likely running off the 12v system.
You`d assume they would have checked the 12v before anything else when it went in to Tesla for a diag.
@@MrPabsUk you’d hope 🤣
@@MrPabsUk Do not know wgat 12V battery in that car is installed.
But I do know that in my previpous (diesel) car the 12V battery was working excellent.....until the moment it broke down without any warning before.
Checking does not guarantee that the battery will last long. It's a moments view
@@reiniernn9071 We had an independent expert check AGM batteries on boats we were running for another company. They checked out as OK. Once the hire season began, the batteries went into thermal runaway and welded themselves together. Electronic checking of batteries seems to be a bit hit or miss.
The original color is better than any of those wrap options.
I own a newer facelift one with that colour 😂

Go for bright yellow, these cars are bland enough, especially with that new faceless look.
@bobroberts6155 Yes i agree, I'd go for Ford's Tangerine Scream. Love that colour.
Of the colours chosen I prefer Khaki Green, however I like the original colour and prefer the pseudo grille as opposed to the newer bland front.
Given the price I suspect the owner knew of the problem, the motors are worth a lot, i wouldn’t be surprised if it sold for parts close to what you paid for it

Find a used 90kwh battery and swap it out yourself! It's plug n play, and a rather simple swap, certainly far easier than an engine swap. You can then sell the battery modules from the old pack for a pretty penny. I see 90kwh packs sell for 8-10k online, and you can get 5k+ for your old modules. Someone recently made a profit doing this.
In the US they now have some battery "fix-it" stations that test and repair only the bank or banks that are dead in battery powered vehicles. This saves people thousands. maybe you have a place like that in the UK. I'd start their my friend and best of luck with it!!
Us sold most teslas in early years we get them a few years later and why there are a few independent shops who will swap a battery ...tearing into pack and replacing failed modules is not big here yet as we use metric and rich rebuilds uses imperial kitchen knives to break pack open.

I'm very sorry to hear about your situation, and I hope you are able to find an affordable solution. However, perhaps the moral of the story is that when given the choice between buying a Tesla and a Ferrari, Ratarossa should always choose the Ferrari. Both cars will break down, but you know how to repair a Ferrari ;-)
I think a nice remote fix with Rich Rebuild's guidance is next to come :)
And that's why none of the used car dealers I know will touch EV's, and a 300k Tesla was never going to be more than a breaker. Free tax will soon be a thing of the past as well as "cheap charging "
When it’s too good to be true, it usually is. Been hearing cost of batteries for these monstrosities are super expensive for some time now so the 17k quote for the battery is not a shock. Hope it works out for you.
Yeah but he only paid £7K as its over 250K miles. Always was a punt and even if he did spend the money it would still be cheap. I think with electric cars the battery is more like the engine on an ice car, I.e. that's the bit at high miles that is likely to go. Imagine spending £7K on say a high end high miles BMW, I'm sure an engine for one of those would be over £17K. But you wouldn't do that, you'd get one second hand, same applies to electric car battery.
I think I prefer the look of the old front to the new. They remind me of a Maserati
Same here; I think the new ones have all the character of a food blender.
New one reminds me of a pretty lady who has had her nose amputated 😮
Very Maserati like, couldn't put my finger on it and then i read this comment lol
I’m glad someone said this. I prefer a radiator grill even if there’s no radiator. I don’t like all these faceless looking electric cars. Same with the electric Mustang: they should have left the grill on it.
Agreed, the original front end was actually a far better look in my opinion than the total plastic look of the face lifted version. To each their own I guess.
I was looking at getting a hybrid earlier this year, although the battery would have been out of warranty. Having looked at the implications of this I found you could dismantle the battery and diagnose individual cells on the traction battery to find those which were bad, and replace just the affected ones, rather than the whole battery. Of course, I don't know if this is possible on a Tesla, or what the availability of replacement cells is...
I watched a programme on EVs recently. The battery has contactors (very high current relays) inside the battery pack. They / it turned out to be shot and was replaced rather than the whole pack.
I think the last supercharging put the last nail in the model s coffin. One of my friends used to work at a Porsche dealership and he said a guy once came with a taycan turbo S that was 3 years old and needed a new battery because of all the supercharging the guy did...it was $30k+ and not covered by warranty. Either time or usage is going to kill a battery sooner or later, no thanks.
Buh but, youre saving the planet with Lithium, and plastic. Gasoline bad, plastic good. Hur dur.
Nom, nom. It's almost as good as gobbling my own knob.
I'd love to know how trading standards allows manufactures to sell goods that are unfit for purpose. How can they just decide it's not in warranty.

VAG EV's arent great. Although never heard of an EV battery doing that in those kind of time frames
Interesting. Like they say don’t charge your phone with a iPad charger just cos it’s quicker, it’ll ruin your battery…
Contact a HEVRA registered garage such as Cleverly EV and have them asses the battery. It could be just an individual cell or module that is faulty and needs replacing or the control board on the pack, much cheaper than a new battery pack from Tesla.
Exactly this. If a F430 engine went, it wouldn't be scrapped over the price of a new crate motor from Ferrari. You'd find the problem, deal with specialists, fix the issue and move on. Starting with a £7k car means lots of budget if a specialist can do an economical repair on the HV battery pack.
I was also going to recommend Cleevely EV in Cheltenham. I've not heard of them doing battery work but I've had a battery heater replaced there and suspension work on my model S - worth a chat.
You certainly got the car for a bargain price!
There are smaller battery packs in the big one. You can take the big pack out, split it and get the faulty small packs replaced.
don't park it next to any of your Ferrari's, or in your garage. Park it in the middle of a field, with nothing around it. It's a Matchbox.
I heard it only takes ONE bad cell to "total" it. Its a lot of work but you can find and replace that one cell. I also heard balancing the battery cells might help/work. Fingers crossed. Keep up the wonderful videos!!!
im looking into that route
best solution is buy another petrol or diesel car
@@SaltimusMaximusyeah the solution is Ferrari drivetrain swap it lol
You are correct - Tesla wants you (like Apple) to buy a new car or at least a new battery - it seems like their default answer to anything...
but compared to the rest of the world £17k is one of the cheapest.
One rule for this EV is when charging the 12v battery - you take it out of the car and you never ever charge it while it is plugged into the car - it likes to fry stuff.
If this was Germany (but I also ask) 2 months outside the expiry of the warranty they can not refuse to replace the part under warranty - I will ask if they reconsider under EU laws - case laws say anything that dies just out of warranty is unreasonable and must be replaced free of charge
It only takes one bad cell to set the battery, the car, and everything with 15 metres on fire.....
I've been watching your channel for years (even when it was called Coffee -something?) and I have to admit that seeing you turn to Teslarossa is a bit of a surprise, but I like EV's as well. Keep up the good work, mate!
Is the high coltage battery the main one that powers the car? the one underneath the car?
That just seems a ridiculous price and just writes off the car, is there any third party options, or a refurbished/reconditioned replacement?
Yes its more than twice what I paid for the car, there are 3rd party options but still very expensive. The main battery is under the car and is not exactly easy to work on
There are shops in the U.S. and I would expect in the UK. that will pull the HV battery, find the defective module, and swap it with a good one for $5k U.S. or about 4k pounds for you. Seems like this would be a great way to go, particularly since you bought the S so cheap to begin with. Finish your mods, enjoy it and then sell it for a profit!
Maybe those prices for a Nissan Leaf but not for Tesla batteries
@@cherkas009 Again, they find and repair the defective module within the battery unit. They don't replace the entire HV battery assembly. Just the defective cells within individual modules to restore function and range. I was referring specifically to Model S batteries. Gruber Motors in AZ does this and I expect there are several other independents that do as well.
Try replacing the 12v battery. The warning messages you received 'can' be from a failing 12v (not saying it definitely IS the cause). Its a cheap way of knowing for sure. If you still get those warnings after the 12v replacement, then you kiss old Tesla goodbye. Lol
Watch video by jrgo or james cooke as both had battery shorts that pull down 12v battery and you will see its as confirmed by tesla mothership the hv pack is the fault.
Both good videos on same dauly and symtoms.
Would you have bought any other saloon car with 250k miles on it for more than 500 quid?
Great to see you working on something new and interesting! Don’t give up
If Tesla were in any way bothered about the environment, why do they build such big cars?
If its on its original battery at circa 300k miles then its done as well as most ICE cars.
Its probably a cell thats gone down, its rarely the whole battery, I know Rich Rebuilds in the US repairs Tesla batteries for a fraction of the cost (he repaired the battery on Hoovies Tesla that did a similar thing to yours). Isnt there also a pipe or connector or something that causes a similar issue that Tesla will only replace the battery but it can be easily repaired if you know what you are doing.
Is there anywhere similar here in the UK that will open up the battery and replace the bad cells? Or do a tie up with Rich Rebuilds and get him over here to sort it.
I've been saying this for a while to pretty much everyone -- these electric cars are 100% disposable. There is nothing 'green' about them. They're filled with toxic metals and have a very limited lifespan, at which point they're not going to be worth fixing in the slightest. Nobody wants 15 year old electronics or computers, and the battery packs begin losing their efficiency the minute they're powered on. It's absurd.
On the other hand, a machine can be always be fixed. Always. It may get harder to find parts, and some improvisation may be required, but you'll always be able to fix a machine. It can last forever if properly cared for. That's just a simple fact.
So the question is -- what's really better for the planet? A machine that can last 30+ years with maintenance, or a disposable vehicle that's maybe good for 10 years before it's scrapped? The oil that comes out of the ground and is burned, or the toxic heavy metals that are mined and then buried in landfills a short time later?
Electric cars are a scam, period. They have their uses, and they'd be a decent option in a free market depending on the use case. But the fact that a 100% transition to electric is being dictated by the global governments is absurdly backwards and frankly terrifying.
The concept of electric motor powered vehicles is old and actually completely fine - it's the power source here which is the issue. Big, heavy, expensive, short lived, despite what proponents say there really isn't any recycling of note going on. Not at all green. The hydrogen powered EVs look to have been the correct solution but the green lobby has most governments and car makers looking at battery electric with no regard to alternatives.
@@system11yt The limitation is the point -- they want people driving less capable vehicles, and that's what we're getting with the battery-electric cars. More control, less liberty. Hydrogen-electric was far too capable -- in fact, as a solution it was the best possible scenario, because it actually improved on the efficiency of the combustion engine. And that's why the global government is ignoring it. They want us driving limited-range, networked electric pods.
@@Dr.TJ_EckleburgThe physics of the situation would disagree with you. Hydrogen is not a viable fuel for vehicle use for storage and production reasons. You'll expend 3-5 times as much energy to get the same work done, and that's without any other losses factored in. And burning it is a worse idea than using it in a fuel cell for reciprocating piston engines.

An 8 year old car is middle aged.....👍
Carbon neutral, it’s fascial…batteries are non recyclable, energy to make them, ie mining precious metals, thermal runaway when they catch fire, cannot be put out and the toxic fumes that are produced are really good for the environment, look at the Dutch oven that left Germany with 500 EV’s that I think is still burning. In a collision, insurance companies are writing them off as they cost 15% more than the regular car, this is really an environmentally train smash, just like the blades off a wind turbine…. All smoke and mirrors, don’t quote me, it I’m lead to believe you need to do over 600,000k to make them carbon neutral, how many batteries is that at £17k? Owe by the way, how is the electricity generated that you need to charge your car? Good luck with that🤘
The WEF is implementing a modern day feudalism system and the days of freedom to travel and personal transport are coming to an end. Many "green" initiatives are not green at all, do nothing to help the environment and only exist to transition society into the new system. It's clear the government want to end car ownership. EVs exist simply to fool the masses that the government are only trying to end "old obsolete" car ownership and everyone will just switch to EVs. The actual plan is for everyone to switch to NOTHING.

I wish succes to all the world with de electric car, but I‘ll stick to petrol for as long as I can!
Get the scud to spit flames from the exhaust and try to catch the Tesla on fire 🔥😂
The Tesla will be like "here, hold my beer".
I know that Telsa have diagnosed the problem and they got the vehicle in their workshop. What about pushing a "goodwill gesture" due to you are out of warranty by only 8 weeks. Also based on your You Tube content, maybe if they agree, you could film the job being doing and the process behind it. They will either say, yes or no.
Tesla also do recon packs Im sure they would have offered one.
the old packs suffer from water ingress that corrode connections.
you can’t simply change the cells, over time the brick in question will be come imbalanced, maybe able to swap out a brick of cells, but best to strip the pack and sell the good bricks and sell motor. etc ..
Congrats on finally managing to get yourself a unit, hopefully its going to make working on the cars so much easier. Also pleased to see you doing something different for the daily commute, just unfortunate it didn't work out, but think about this, that Tesla covered 293,052 mile when you picked it up, that's nearly half a million kilometers - not bad.
Exactly, how many ICE passenger cars are still going on their original engine, without an expensive rebuild, after 293,052 miles?
Keep the midnight blue, it's much nicer than the wraps! :D Also, save some ££ for the air suspension, drive unit and battery, which will need servicing sooner or later (speaking of experience with multiple S's.)
BTW. Get parts directly from Tesla, they are usually much cheaper than ebay. The front bumper new, unpainted is less than 200 £.
I think that darker blue is actually ocean blue the bumper is midnight blue metallic.
@@aleksisoukkala the lighter is ocean blue, it's not this. It was also jut an option after the facelift :) I had an 85D with midnight blue and tan interior for a while.
@@sveip well my car is midnight blue and it is exactly like facelift bumper. And I have parked my car next to ocean blue model s and it is definitely darker.
i wouls spray the midnight blue with glitter and laquer over the top. Best option i think!
Technically possible to repair. It really a stack if 18650 cells. Although several hundred of them. You can open up the pack and find maybe 1 faulty cell. Which is less than a tenner. Given the miles theres probably a queue of cells waiting to fail Out of interest its worth a go. In terms of time not worth it. If it was a lower mileage battery it could pay off.....
If you get it back - put it in service mode - read the alerts. Tesla may just be 'killing' it by saying you need a HV battery - that isnt always the case, replace the 12v battery and do a firmware reinstall. If the MCU is flickering then I probably wouldnt bother any further ( £2-3k)
Pay for access to Toolbox 2/3 and get the cable to access the vehicle systems
Perhaps try the battery Tavarish has taken out of the P1?
That would be perfect for this toilet.
Nardo would have been a safe bet.........better give Rich Rebuilds/Electrified gang a call
There has got to be an aftermarket cheaper option. Tavarish was in the uk speaking with a company that had an upgrade for the mclaren.
The Rat is a smart guy. Buying an 8yo EV with 300K on the clock. You can’t tell me he didn’t expect the battery to be close to end of days. Watch this space, this is definitely a set up!
It’s definitely got to be Rosso Red 😂
Was car used as a taxi? That mileage is mega 😮
You betrayed the internal combustion engine Gods, and vengeance was swift.
Actually , quite an interesting risk and channel addition.
LOl they were real swift !
Give Cedar batteries a call in Worthing . The main battery tray can be dropped and either the bad cell isolated/replaced or the BMS looked at.
Don't warp it just burn it.
Nardo Gray with black matt or gloss accents looks smart!
definitely go for the khaki green, it looks incredible
I like the original blue best but out of the samples I would go Khaki green.
They should be all scrap. EV dirt 😂😂
I think with a new battery, you are looking at what, £27k total for a tesla with a brand new battery, that’s a really good deal. The battery on these cars is basically their heart, electric motors will happily run for a million miles, they dont have a gear box so this car could be good as new.
Not the early motors, then and the performance units, (all large rear drive units) they’re a ticking time bomb. I can repair them now provided permanent damage hasn’t been caused
My guess is that the seller had a similar experience and fixed it in some way before selling with fingers crossed behind back. Get in touch with them and ask what the fix was
When your Tezla battery fails, who ya gonna call, Rich Rebuilds! He can probably replace the bad cell and Bob's your Uncle.
I’m pretty sure we will be hearing this same story over and over in the coming years. At least Tesla has a cult following and independent repair shops will be able to help. It’s all the other EV’s that are not as popular that will end up a huge financial hardship for the owners and either get scrapped or burned for insurance fraud.
To be fair the car has done a huge mileage
Yeah but Tesla cuts off supercharging and other features if you use indys to repair the car, either pony up the big bux or limp around without the advent of the charging network...
@@peejayem4700 it has done huge mileage but so many others on you tube failed with alot less mles. Age and dc charging a killer.
Yep...see my deconstruction .rant up above. All I can say is look at what happened to Hammond in that EV that caught fire and burnt to a crisp in seconds. He was lucky to get out. Bottom line is, look at phones and laptops. Charge for ages, run down fairly rapidly in use. Its the same with cars. All electric cars. I cant believe people think its a good idea when they are always having issues with batteries in phones, bikes, scooters and the like. Story the other day was of the same sort of battery being charged for a bike and it catching fire and it burnt the house down and killed the poor blokes wife. Every day now you read of stories like this and yet people keep pushing these stupid battery EVs....
Its going to go the same way as the Dieselgate debacle of the Gordon Brown years, where they pushed the cars as being green and eco friendly when everyone with a brain knew they were not that clean. So people went out and bought them due to incentives, then all of a sudden they realized they were wrong and reversed course, while waking huge taxes back on them and making it more or less impossible to sell on the cars. Just stupid. But thats the World we live in today....England is a total mess and nothing has improved since then but got worse. I would love to see many many idiots pay a lot of money for lots of EVs then all try to charge them at once this coming winter and watch the National Grid collapse under the strain...the excuses and comedy would be hysterical....
Yeah, gasoline bad..plastic good. It's not like plastic is made from oil too. Oh boy, I love the smell of muh own farts. Nom nom. Lithium hydroxide, it's what's for dinner!!
Deffo sounds like one for for Uncle Rich!
Tyler Hoover had a similar issue a while back czcams.com/video/T7Q0nNkQTCo/video.html
If you cant get him over to the UK to do it, I am sure he can guide you through replacing the affected cells.
His bill to hoovie was very large
When you told us it was an early model S with 250000miles all I could think off was what about the life of the battery. I guess that's why there is wrecking yards full off them in the US. I would love a second hand EV as my daily but the battery life, and replacement is too much of a concern. I guess moving forward EV manufacturers are going to have too address this issue some how to make them realistic to buy second hand.
Where can I find wrecking yards full of old Model S in the US?
Maybe you could get the battery refurbed from the same place Tavarish got his P1 battery or you could ask Rich Rebuilds to ship you one from his Electrified Garage
There are places in the US that sell remanufactured battery packs for Tesla at about half price. No idea where, just seen them on CZcams. Edit to say there are likely as many issues or risks with that though. Good Luck
Plus he lives 5000 miles away over an ocean
I doubt that any shipping company would be prepared to take a large lithium ion battery, especially after what to the Fremantle ship.
Norway was very early adopters of Tesla - there are several "electric" garages there that would be worth to check with concerning battey repair (also you have access to the servíce menu where you can see all error codes - ex if coolent leaked in to one of the engines causing a short that is the root cause for the problem) - also I like the blue but of your options I would do the Kaki Green.
Ill look at that service menu
I thought the Tesla (Model S) battery warranty was 8 years or 150K miles - which ever came first, so your high voltage battery was out of warranty anyway due to the high mileage…
@@jasonsanderson3612 My Tesla Model S 2015 had 8 years, infinite miles (sold in Sweden) - I think the mile limit came when model 3 was introduced?
@@jasonsanderson3612for that year there was no mileage limit
For a Tesla with some 300,000 miles on the clock, you can't help wondering how many times the main battery has been changed. The thought occurs, is there an inverse ratio between distance driven and battery life?
Really do your research on battery safety, they're serious bits of kit that pack a hell of a punch!
There are a number of companies in England that can repair the the HV pack for a fraction of the quoted replacement cost. It’s not the end of the world but it will ruin your £10k budget target.
Love the channel.. Love the hustle.. But... Tesla... *YAWN!!!!*
_Waiting patiently for Ferrari content.._
You don't have to get the HV battery replaced at Tesla. Get yours refurbished or get one that's already been refurbished with new cells for way cheaper.
Excellent! I think when buying this vehicle at this price you knew the problem. 300K miles is enough to have to renew parts on any car, not to mention the number of recharge cycles on an EV of this mileage . It's a smart idea to make a good series of videos. I'm sure you already have several potential solutions in mind. Good marketing, well done! PS: it's also a good training to repair your future electric Ferrari.
Cheers Scott,Tesla is just a massive iPad on wheels mate, bin it 👍👍
Now you have the chassis for the F40! Pop the body off and drop on the F40! 🤣
So how many times batteries has been changed as they only garenteeed for 5 years and it has 16 of them and as for colours bright orange
Is there even enough charging hours in the day to achieve that mileage!
