I can’t find my other comment so I will put this here:
Every Tesla SHOULD have cruise control as standard! You pull the cruise lever toward you once, for autopilot twice 👍
Edit: You should do the NC500 or SC500 with a caravan in the Tesla!!
Has it got free supercharging? As it’s the right age to have it.
Shouldn’t be any rust as it’s all aluminium apart from the suspension components

Yes.
I agree we need to see a Tesla Rally Car !!

Take it to a Tesla service center to see what it would cost to have everything fixed!
Including the battery pack :)
@@Naotaku it will be under warranty as teslas that age don't have kilometer limit in warranty. My guess is 10-15k for battery without warranty at tesla and maybe few hundreds somewhere else to fix the problem.
@@tompperro6589 you dont know anything about this car. This car was refused a battery warranty as they had already been replaced twice mate. I knew the previous owner it was an airport shuttle car and a nightmare at that. Its on its 3rd set of headlights the broken one he even silicone pasted around it and it went too after one winter. Tesla have locked this car out of its warranty about 2yr ago. The interior is mint becaue he bought the big rubberised seat covers like most taxis do. Shuttle minivans do over a million miles with very little issue, the toyota car shuttles we use do 700-800k miles and the Teslas weve had in usually do 300-400k max. Cheers.

I love how the “add fully autopilot” is just a simple button similar to adding Onions to your shopping cart
With an average of 63,000 miles a year and 172 miles a day for 365 days a year for 6 and a half years, it’s definitely one of the highest mileage cars in the UK for its age and type, if not the highest.
You’d think so, but I know of a company who’s vehicle do well over 100k per year.
Airport shuttle services can easily rack up 100k miles a year.

We would love to see you bringing it to Tesla to see how much exactly the battery has degraded over 450.000 miles
This can be done on the service menu in the car. Hold the E on the Model S sign in software settings and type service and run a health test. Will give remaining battery life and degradation as a percentage.
@@ColeBenderI have heard that it's really not accurate if you look it at the menu and gives you more optimistical result then the truth..
It is still on warranty, probably it is not the first battery and motor in car with that mileage. They do such distances but no one mentions that usually they have like third motor and second battery. It is no problem with car on warranty, but it would be a big big problem for normal users of cheaper older cars.
@@konradm4403I mean the batteries do actually sometimes last that long, I have seen ones with that mileage on their first battery. The refurbished motors Tesla puts in are usually not as good quality as the new ones though so that's why you can see people going through multiple under warranty even though the first one lasted 250-300k miles.
@@konradm4403got any proof?
Run our Tesla for about 2pp Mile then again we charge at home on overnight cheap power, 330+ mile range means very little on-route charging. It’s amazing how cheap EV’s are when you do a bit of joined up thinking !
the yearly depreciation on yours is about 5x my yearly cost of running my car plus purchase price spread over 5 years. Fuel costs, I worked out an EV would be about half the cost, but that was before I factored in how I would drive it, and the massive increases in electricity per kWh, I think currently (pun intended) an EV would save me 30% which would work out to £600 a year. So I've need a £6k EV to last me 10 years just to break even.
So no, not at all cheap. Just some non-spaghetti thinking for you!
We run our BMW I3 very cheaply, for the first few years we never paid to charge because of the multiple free charging points. When that perk went we charged cheaply overnight, 7 pence a kwh, so with our lifetime average of 4.7 miles kwh you can work out how cheap it is to run. Its had tyres and one 12 volts battery in 70k ICE cars can't even get close to its running costs. Amazingly there is still free charging around so it's still saving us even more money. We have a campervan so I know the costs of running ICE vehicles and even with depreciation they don't even become close to running an EV. I don't think we will change the I3 so it won't matter to us, it doesn't rust as its aluminium, carbon fiber and plastic, its very light and drives very well
@@peterszczesiak6025 I would like an i3 REX just to play with….wife won’t let me !
Ours is a Rex, it's a great car and has served us well, very quick and predictable in handling 😊
@@miff227I don’t care abou depreciation because I keep my cars for years and many miles. If people care about depreciation, buy used or lease. And BtW, all us EV owners know about gas cars. We’ve all owned them.
The issue with the wipers hitting the edge of the bonnet is the wiper driver mechanism which. Tesla can replace the mechanism for a few hundred pounds.
You do get TACC without purchase but it’s radar cruise control only and doesn’t change lanes without Enhanced Auto Pilot.
My 2014 Model S has done 250,000Km and is similarly robust, with very little wrong with it, including the air suspension.
Go on a road trip, forget a caravan, you can sleep in the back with a blow up mattress and it will even keep the AC on whilst you sleep. If it’s a free supercharging for life car a road trip won’t cost much.

The worst thing about mine is simply how other people react to it. As a car, it’s great. But it comes with so much bullshit from other people.
That is so true. I have a Tesla and when there are many cars at the supercharger I hate when drivers start a circle of discussion who has longer ranger, lower consumption or whatever else cult discussion leads into. You Dont really get range anxiety with all the tesla superchargers nowadays, especially when the car calculates the route and expected range at arrival of those charging stations.

Just to give some other context to the public charging costs, which are ridiculous. In Ireland only charging my model Y at night on cheap 0.07kwh electricity, it has cost me €85 to drive 5,300KM.
EVs offer huge savings IF you can home charge cheaply.
My main issue with EVs, like most green things I suppose, is those that can benefit the most are those that can otherwise afford it, whereas those in a council house with a cheap petrol have to pay rising petrol costs.
Unfortunately most people can't charge at home. I live in Norwich and only 44% of houses have a driveway? Most cities struggle to get above 50% and this is were EV's are supposed to be best used.
@@leedent8211There is affordable public charging of course. There's a whole spectrum between what was mentioned in the video (supermarket fast charging) and very cheap home charging.
It's not because you don't have a driveway that you don't have a garage/car park. Those can be equipped with chargers and will be.
If you often use your car, maybe you can charge at work?
If you don't, a normal street/shop charger costs less than half what was mentioned in the video. In the end, most cars are stationary over 95% of the time, it's not impossible to find an affordable charging solution where your car is stationary.
The actual percentage of people with an issue charging will be a lot lower than just those who don't have a driveway.
EV's are NOT green in any way, and what's wrong with council houses?
This is a big issue and it needs resolving. Anyone who drives a low amount of miles and does not have home charging will save money with a petrol car - it is totally creating the wrong incentives. Government needs to intervene as the market isn't working.
Doesn't particularly impact me as I have home charging.
@@tonygarlingewarren7456I have to disagree. Watch Conways’s Ted Talk about EVs then do the math yourself. Also most EV owners/wanters don’t care about the environment. An EV will be my next vehicle and the environment is not on my list of reasons.

That would be great watching people stand around watching the thing charge at the services for hours on end!
Love your channel
This is one of your best ones
Just laughed the all way through it !
Nice find! Some things to look out for:
Lower control arms front, these are well known to fail.
Upper control arm front known to rust alot in colder countries.
Control arm rear can be cause of vibration, not sure on the top of my head what its called, but it mounts to the engine and the rear subframe.
Rear control arm mounts, known to break and it will make the rear wheel tilt in a angel making the car unable to drive.
Headlights, Facelift cars are wellknown for the headlight failure as you shown in the video, cheaper ones can be found in China for about 300 euro.
Electric rear hatch, known to make sounds and leak.
Rear camera, as shown in video, fails.
Side cameras in front fenders are prone to get burnt, eventually needs replacing.
12 Volt battery is known to be bad sooner than expected, no a huge deal tho.
Hood latch is metal and bolted to the aluminium hood, corodes after a while.
Ground fittings in the chassi snaps and corrode, this indicates most often issues with stearing "lost steering function" or random electrical issues, the fittings are most prone to failure under the "Frunk" in the front bay of the car.
Battery heater module dies, quite a pain if you have a AWD car (D-Model), its mounted on the torpedo wall in the front, only way to reach it if you have a front motor would be to drop the front subframe or HV-Battery.
Heating element inside the car is known to fail, it sucks in moisture from the front, important to swap filter and best to have the extra very large "Biodefence" filter, can be found online and glued in place if you wish to do so!
On the front wall of the car there is a "junktionbox", alof of the large fuses are located here, badly documented by Tesla, and if you get problems with heater its common the big fuse for the heater in this box blows, its hard to get to if you have a AWD car.
Rear brakelight in the rear window is known to burn out LEDS, sad thing is that its glued onto the rear window, no way to replace it unles you cut out the rear glass from the rear hatch.
Earily front seats can rust and snap in their construction so it moves more, for safety, replace the seat.
HV-Battery fuse, these ones are known to need to be replaced.
AC pipe left side inside wheel arch, front, known to break, and quite important since the car uses the AC to cool the coolant when charging on hot days.
Moisture in rear lights, drains holes are almost always clogged, can be cleaned by removing the rear lights.
Seals and water leaking from panoramic sunroof, very important to clean out the drainholes, water finds its way down the A-pillars inside the car otherwise, and it will make its way to the main electronics and fuses, making a complete low voltage electric mess..
Handles micro switches and gear snapping, kits to fix this are all around the internet.
Wiper assembely lose, useally it can be fixed to torq it correctly again, but it is also known to snap in a specific position, in that case it must be replaced, in the video you indicate marks on the hood, and that is well known from the wiper assembely moving too much.
Calipers are known to need some love about every other year, so that the pads can move easily.
Coolant three and four way valves are prone to leaking.
Front motor (SDU) are known to fail too early, any high pitch noise or scraping when letting go of the throttle is bad.
Rear motor LDU version (if preformance version, or some RWD version = LDU) are known to fail because of a coolant seal in the engine, can be checked by removing the speed sensor on the side of the block of the drive unit, if any liquid, moisture, or even rust is located its indicating a seal failure, drive unit needs to be repaired before it completely fails.
Steering rack is known to rust shut, so that it gets hard to turn, needs replacement in that case.
MCU1 has the problem with EMMC, for sure check that this is changed on the unit if you have a Nvidia Tegra processor in your car ( MCU1 ).
Screens on the cars with panoramic sunroofs are known to "Delaminate", this can be found by seeing "bubbles" or a "airgaps" in the screen, needs fixing since the fluid leaks into the unit itself, will cause short eventually.
Breather Valves on HV-Battery Back are known to clog, can be cleaned but be careful with and no preasure washers.
Top of the HV battery is also starting to report early rusting in the front part around the HV fuse and "tower".
85, keep away from these vehicles, the batteries are 200 % confirmed to have issues and completely fail, the eariler models as well, 60, 70, and 90's have started reporting simular weird issues with the HV battery, New tech for the batteries was introduced around 2015 is much much more reliable.
If you have airsuspension, that is known to fail..
If you need any help or somethin, feel free to reach out, but overall, amazing car, i own one as well with free supercharging, and I cant go back to an ICE car.

17:39 I think most complaints of Tesla build quality arose after the Model 3 launched... Because Tesla then had to grow their manufacturing capacity beyond what was reasonable to continue enforcing good quality just so they could supply enough Model 3's
You mean the notorious "Carpark factory" era ?
It was mostly the Fremont assembly, a Toyota factory that was repurposed for Tesla, with a lot of issues (panel gaps etc). Berlin and Shanghai are built from ground up and don't have assembly issues. Their paint quality is terrible everywhere though. New multicoat from Berlin is slightly better but still has QA issues.
Nope. We got Teslas (model s) from 2012 here in Norway. The build quality was cack from the start, and still is patchy to this day. You never know when you buy a new one, it could be alright or it could be shite, the quality is very inconsistent. There is also alot of strange engineering. Stuff that a legacy would never do.
@@boundish1 -Yeah, Tesla Model S build quality was poor and then improved in 2016 ish. Seems to have got worse with 2022 Plaid model.

Here in Norway the Model S is as common as a Golf, and Tesla is the most sold brand several years in a row. And even as a massive petrolhead - I have to admit that they are very good cars. The Model S even looks very good in my opinion.. A long roadtrip based on "first time EV drivers" would be fun.
So as much as I love old BMW's, I am really looking forward this on the channel! Just drop the 3 pin charging and go to a Supercharger like normal people.
Or just put in level 2 charger at home if possible or a higher rated plug and continue to use the mobile charger.
@17:46 someone definitely mentioned already but Built Quality depends on Factory and from what era and what model tesla.. generally
The basic free autopilot should include adaptive cruise and lane assist. It should just work. After the car has been reset (due to change of ownership) you have to enable it in the menu and confirm some terms and conditions.
Enhanced (2k) includes auto park and lane switching.
FSD (9k) includes the traffic light recognition and so on (which doesnt really do much due to lack of development in EU and laws crippling the development). These features are also very limited by the autopilot hardware inside, judging by the age it would probably be hardware 2.0 and it wouldn't be able to do this anyway. They swap the hardware in case you order it to 3.0 (or they would have if you ordered the option from the start).
They swapped my unit for free since I had the option when ordering the car (back then there was only one flavor costing 2k, all current owners got a free upgrade).
Edit: also your warranty is limited by age or mileage, whichever comes first. Both drivetrain (motors) and battery. I don't know them on the top of my head but you exceeded both.
I got a 2018 and even the basic autopilot has to be purchased. At standard, I only have regular cruise control, not adaptive one.

@@Low760Well it’s a paid option in most cars. The difference is here you can change your mind and add it after purchase. Tesla sat nav plans in supercharging stops, which calculate how long you need to be plugged in for to get you home. You can use any charger, but with Tesla charger they’ll get you to 80% in 30-40 minutes, although you tend to be on chargers 10-15 minutes. You need to see what the cost is per KW hour. Tesla 43p, BP around 60p. Wall charger and economy night tariff can be as low as 9p. The plug in ‘granny’ charger can range from 4amp to 14amp. I’ve got a non-Tesla whip gets hot and drops to 4amps. Wall chargers at home go up to 32 amp

At some point please do a proper winter driving test. Daily driving in sub-zero weather, i'm really interested in how the range is effected by cold environments.
I drive mine in very cold winters. About 20-30% less range but it helps to do preconditioning at home while plugged in before leaving (heat the car). Still plenty enough range for daily use.
Ok cool. What temperature range were you operating in? Also, how much does the preconditioning add to your overall electrical/utility cost?
What you said about the cruise control is not correct. Every Tesla has autosteer included and adaptive cruise control.
How about a "fuel" economy test of the tesla vs a car of its same age range and a car of 10+ years older that are petrol. As you said yourself the range and price puts people off, but it would be good to see how good or bad it is against its petrol counterparts. Could also put it up against a new-ish tesla for comparison? Could also do the test by taking them all to the nurburgring?
What I would love is a range test with the same amount of energy in an ICE car than in an EV…
60Kwh vs 6 litres of petrol
Best to take it to the Nürburgring on a trailer otherwise it’ll take days to get there if you have to charge every 100 miles
The effective fuel price for a EV gets mostly determined by where you charge it, if you can charge it at home with solar the petrol one will have no chance, if you fast charge it, petrol seems like a bargain in comparison
@@supersploon4177I charged my non-Tesla at a Supercharger yesterday and paid 47p per kWh. Bearing in mind that fast chargers are never cheap, my 300bhp EV (3 passengers, cruising at 80mph+, heated seats, air con and boot full to the brim) averaged the equivalent of 55mpg in terms of cost. Then consider that my first “tank” of electricity was charged at home for 7.5p per kWh means the first almost 300 miles of my journey cost around £6 in total. It’s really nowhere near as bad as they make out 👍
@@supersploon4177That's what the Macmaster and Geoff proved. Charging on a roadtrip in the U.K. is hella expensive.
You should put a tow bar and then install a generator on a trailer and see if it goes and what mpg you get...
That's a pretty stupid idea.
@AutoAlex this is a perfect idea
That would funny 😂
2 problems. It won’t charge while driving unless it’s just being towed “in gear” and charging via regen, secondly they aren’t certified for towing in Europe/UK, even though I fitted a detachable towbar to mine for a bike rack and have never towed my boat with it honest guv.
I just said that......I should read other peoples comments first!!!
Cannot tow with the pre-plaid Teslas unfortunately in the EU (UK included).. Maybe some Raven could.. cannot remember.
Put solarpanels on your "unit" and thingy (no research here I'm afraid) to (it can DC charge right?) DC charge the Tesla (not free but cheap on good days electricity)...
Expand it later with cheap car batteries (you have a lot of them I guess) for buffer when you don't charge?
But with the car... Either (huge huge project...) convert a car of your choose (I would guess a BMW shell with no engine) to a electric with Tesla parts...
Or try to make it a Tesla drift car... or restore the battery life, and make it tow car... with the solar panel thingy you could tow cars for free (almost free :-)
3:18 : I love how Alex delivers his jokes and taylor takes them
I drove some Teslas at a job I had last summer, among others the top of the line, P100D, ludocris mode 720 hp first gen model S, I'll never forget the first time i mashed the throttle, in ludocris mode, from (almost) a stand still, the ammount of pressure pushing me into the seat straight away and the acceleration was insane, and the card reader that was mounted on the dashboard ended up in the backseat! 😅
They also spoil you rotten, you barely have to do anything yoursel,f no shifting gears, no braking unless in an emergency or if you want to come to a complete stop, no switching full beams on and off when driving at night.... Hell, with the model X you don't even have to open the bloody door when you walk up too it!
After my first wekkend when I went to drive home in my own 20 year old, manual petrol powered car, not only did I almost stall at every intersection because I forgot to change down, but every time I took my foot of the throttle and DID'NT feel that regenerative braking I had a mini-panic attack for a split second until it dawned on me 🤣
I think this is the best description on how evolutionary EVs are to modern automobiles. Even if they are not suited for most users, I hope that many features will be brought to petrol cars just so they are more competitive for each other.
I’m impressed with how good condition it’s in with that kind of mileage and especially as a taxi! It’s a life that takes its toll on even the most sturdy of cars, that thing has been really well maintained!
It’ll be interesting to see if it continues to be as hardy for the boys as it has so far!
Having fun in these weird times is highly recommended. Thanks for the laughs 😂

I'll be honest I saw the title and assumed it was one of the EV focused channels I watch (yes I like electric and petrols) and was surprised in a good way to your reactions as yes there is tongue and cheek which is why I love you guys but you didn't just bash it as you realised its pretty good. I'd love to see you do a long journey in it to show its really not as hard as some think but then go crazy with it - make it a batmobile and go racing. Thoroughly impressed how well it held up after 450k miles proving they can go as long if not longer. I have both a Turbo and an EV and having that instant effortless torque is great for daily driving but I admit on a day off I love the sound of a nice engine :D Keep doing what you do!
It is as hard as you think, owning and running and EV.
Here in Austria we had taxis back in the 90s which were Mercedes diesel. 3L and around 100bhp those things run for well over a million kilometers easy.
Tesla says it's 8 years or 250.000kms whichever comes first, so it's definitely not under warranty anymore... You can Google it up it will show right away. I would like to see this car on a track against a hot hatch, we all know they are fast on straights, but due to it's wheight it doesn't do well on corners against a lighter car, so even though a hot hatch might have less power it has that cornering advantage, I think that would be interesting to test it out!
You do have adaptive cruise and basic autopilot. EAP and full autopilot costs money.
The stalk works my good man
You are going to have to do a Petrol V Diesel v Electric challenge and score each one to give a grand winner - with racing, long distance (with hills), passenger comfort considerations and cost of running - and all cars being of similar dimensions..
On those comparisons can we do a challenge with the same energy in the tank? See how they compare, that would be very informative
Is it still on the original battery and motors though ? Although you’d have more warranty if so I suppose

Drive as fast as possible in reverse
Take a look at the inner lower suspension arm bolts, if they haven't been replaced, they are fitted before the battery pack is fitted and have to slide out towards the battery pack... option 1, drop the batter to remove the bolt, option 2, cut the head off the bolts and fit the new bolt the other way 😂
Something you could do (to show how efficient a Tesla actually is): You say 'how far can we drive it on a tank of diesel', how about you see how far you can drive it on the equivalent amount of energy as a tank of diesel. A liter of diesel contains 10.6 kWh of chemical energy. Lets assume a tank of diesel in a Model S kind of car would be 60 litres. That means drive it until you've consumed 636 kWh, or about 8 full charges. Could be quite the road trip :D
You should test it on the Nürburging
They'd have to recharge it half way round. 😁
@@lint8391 No they won't. But the battery is going to overheat and limit power after perhaps half of the track. Maybe a little sooner.
@@angela1984a I was making a joke about the depleted state of the battery pack on their 450,000 miles Tesla...

@@angela1984a A lower planetary population would be an effective solution to global warming.
Lower global birth rates may come in naturally as more and more countries develop higher standards of living and more "westernised" cultures.
With cars, there's a huge amount of energy required in making them. So that continuing to run a 15 year old car makes more sense from a global warming point of view than buying a new Tesla.
Always amazes me that people moan about range when you go fast in an ev is exactly the same as performance car.
It's not exactly the same though. I mean I love my VW ID but with some spirited driving the range just dissapears and my previous car would certainly increase in milage but nowhere near as much. I don't mind that too much though, my biggest issue is highway speeds where my previous car would sit happily at 140 km/h at 0.5 litres/10km but again, at 140 the range on the EV just dissapears, that in my opinion is the biggest flaw with todays EVs
The issue isn’t how quickly the fuel is used when you boot it, it’s where to refill and how long it takes vs a petrol car. I know if I want a spirited drive I’ll cane the petrol but I can pull into any fuel station and be back on the road in 5 mins.
@@alexm6340my Golf GTI could even drive 125km without the fuel gauge move away from full. Ice cars are physics bending!
@@alexm6340 You bought a wrong car, Tesla is a king of highway driving in EVs because VW cheaped out on aerodynamics engineers.

I can charge my car at my house and never even need to stop a petrol station.
You know what? I'm teaching learners to drive in one of these! Well, OK, not the S. I'm using a Model 3 Long Range. No more tears at the traffic lights, zero heartache on hill starts and no reticence at roundabouts. Instant torque and instant fun. Only issue is dealing with other drivers - pissed off that a learner left them standing at the traffic lights! About time.
Charge it at a house that has solar panels and see if the solar can keep up work the charging requirements.
Do an economy run.
Tow a trailer.
Take it to tesla and see how much it will cost to put right.

Should check if it has the free supercharging for life. If it wasn't taken to a Tesla dealer should still have it. Worth its weight in gold alone if it has it
Doesn't matter, it's for life.
The only way it gets turned off is if Tesla takes the car back and sells it afterwards.
This could be a fun series! Looking forward to more 450000 mile Tesla content 😀
Some public chargers (your example) charge insane rates of 80p per khw or more, but for your example i would pay 6 pounds which is far less than 45 pounds. As with everything in life, you can do it the stupid or the smart way. For my BMW i paid 11k in gas in a 5 year period. And i had no choice, whatever the gas station wants, that's what i had to pay. For EVs you can even go off grid with solar, or run a diesel generator and still get better gas mileage:)
I've said this a few times: what is the difference between touching that touchscreen (or any touchscreen on any car, especially with airplay/carplay) and your phone, on a secure mount?
I think a range test to see how the miles have taken their toll.
Prob has seen a lot of fast charging, I’d expect it to be near 70% - which would provide plenty of range for every day driving for most, given its condition, a bargain tbh!
Agree - real world range test
@@mamba101Tesla has stats that the battery has > 90% life after 200k miles so I'd expect closer to 80%. But it depends on heaps of other factors like fast charging like you say, but a smart owner would know to keep it in between 20 and 80% for best battery health and charging speed for a nickel based lithium ion battery
This is on its third battery fix under waranty and each motor is the second one. Cheers

Here’s a thought. Watching your video here in New Zealand (been here for the last 20 years) I’m due to head back to Reading in June. When you are done with the car, I’d be keen to buy it for my father who is due to turn 80 in July. It would be the last car he would own and quite a leap from his well worn Mercedes. Be priceless to see his face, his last fast car was a gold BMW 635 CSI when I was at Theale Green School in the early 90’s
He wouldn't be able to keep it running if you have to buy it for him, trust me. The really expensive bits are fairly robust, but the undercarriage, door handles and lights go bad really easy. I'm 12k £ deep in repairs on my 9yo P85D already after 270k km.

The answer is production. Cruise control components have been fitted for decades on cars that don't have the capabilities, same as wiring for for example fog lights.
It would just complicate the production process to have it all differently.
