the last episode of BCS drew1.8m viewers. Relax, it wasnt that groundbreaking.
The story they told over the course of Breaking Bad, El Camino and Better Call Saul will forever be in the top tier of entertainment produced for the small screen, or ANY screen, really.
as good a cinematic universe as has ever been created
I'm not sure that it will ever be topped tbh.

reaking bad is good better call saul finale absolutely atrocious what a perfecct wy to waste peoples time at least end with a bang this show ended oblivous in todays age thats not good i dont know if vince lives under a rock or peter is so old and doesnt know what a tv show audience expects but holy crap i came in late to breaking bad started waitching in 2017 and now it aall feels like a waste of time that finale ruined the whole purpose of the universe. most movie universe have the sense of myssticism aand having expectations meet but the ending was too oblivious i get the kim and jimmy ending but it was slow and boring and thats not how a show ends it ends with something excited or sad. like the ending felt like i didnt even care about kim and jimmy it just felt like i was watching them with no emotional attachment. watch star wars or a marvel tv show thats real tv not this slow lazy writing
Agreed
I wish they talked about the Saul and Chuck flashback. It was such a good scene for the finale especially with Saul constantly bringing up regrets
Listen to the last episode of the Better Call Saul Insider Podcast. They talk about the scene and how it came to be.
Chuck pulls his ear at the dinner with Rebecca when Jimmy was making lawyer jokes. "The Carol Burnett" thing. And then it was the lady Carol Burnett played who ultimately started for the search of Jimmy Mcgill again.
I saw a parallel between his relationship with Chuck and his relationship with Walter there at the end
Totally agree. Chuck and his relationship with Saul, both for plot and the dynamic between them in their scenes, was the best part of the show for the first 3 seasons. It was only after he died that Kim developed into the character that she became, so it was awesome to see him in the flashback scene.
McGil. He's James McGil.
I like that Vince readily gives credit to all the other people responsible for the success of BB and BCS.
That shows the humility of a great TV showrunner.
Why he should worry about credits if he had the money of a person that was responsible for everything? He may had help, but Sony paid him like he did everything by himself and that's what's matter, why being a dick too if you can be only rich?
I mean imagine if he didn’t though. He would look like such a prick 😂
@@TheJessEffect Yeah, imagine if he did like James Cameron.
@@TheJessEffect that’s the majority of the people in Hollywood
"What is the problem that becoming Saul Goodman solves?" is such a brilliant approach to crafting this show's story. Even more amazing is that Kim was not planned to be such a crucial character at the start - the writers simply discovered that they were holding an incredible love story in their hands from the strength of Rhea's performance.
Yeah exactly. This is why planning an entire series - all seasons - is not always the right approach. And Rhea was really good in the show, I mean really.
Dude that's insane. Kim is hands down the best new part of the show. I also loved Nacho and Lalo but Kim was such a bigger part of everything
its kinda crazy that 2 times in a row they ended up with a supporting actor so good they had to make them crucial to the show
A rare show that ended super strong, just like _Breaking Bad._ I can't wait to see what this team does next.
disagree, the BB finale was very fan servicey and did not fit the greatness of the overall show. Granite State wouldve been a better way to end it
@@rickfox5750 that would've left everyone hanging with no resolution though, the ending was approrpriate
@@rickfox5750 granite state is not an ending. That would have passed people off more than the sopranos did.
@@rickfox5750 LLLLL
Most of season 6 was inferior. Season 5 was amazing!
Tony Dalton was absolutely phenomenal as Lalo! That would be a great spin off.
Scary AF
Lalos story wouldn't be any good, salamancas became a boss but they didn't adapt with the modern world. They would decline and it was coming.
Don eladios rise would be something to see, dude is the biggest boss in mexico and lived like a king until gus poisoned his cartel.
@@md.mohaiminulislam9618 lol lalo's story wouldn't be as good? his character is the most charismatic in the entire bb/bcs universe and he's "the chosen" salamanca. it wouldn't fit the style of gould/gilligan to make a show entirely about a cartel though so no way a spinoff is done. If there were one, the Salamancas [Hector, Lalo, Tuco, the Twins] AND Eladio/Bolsa. Plus, it's still a mystery what Gus was doing in Chile & how he went from chicken man to drug dealer.
In a vacuum, you're absolutely right. Lalo is the most interesting story, by far. But it was hard to do just one prequel with all the actors getting older. Imagine trying to do another with actors in their 50's-60's trying to play 20-year-olds. If they ever did another spin-off, I think there's only one direction they can go and that's after the final episode of BCS.
@@md.mohaiminulislam9618 ur not smart
Jimmy is inspired by Kim coming forward to atone for his own sins. I think he had every intention of taking the 7 year deal until he heard the news about Kim going to the DA and then Howard's wife. It changed his plans completely because he understood why he did it. And that's why we get the 4th and final Jimmy persona: from Slippin' Jimmy to Saul Goodman to Gene Takovic to James McGill.
She was inspired by his shenanigans and he was inspired by her courage
Well said chaos
Yep, same reason why he became a lawyer. Kim was becoming one and he didn't want to be left behind
i think he “is” saul goodman, at the end there’s no differentiation between jimmy and saul, but kim is like his weakness, just like walt with skyler, he managed to kill a drug lord but couldnt hide a second cellphone
Yes. Too many people call this last persona Jimmy, no it's not. It's james.
I like the way that Vince often talks about his characters as if they’re real people, the true workings of which even he does not fully understand. He’s humble and allows the characters continuing life
You could tell from the first scene with Saul Goodman in BB that there was something special there. He just changed the whole show for the better.
Same as when Lalo appeared
@@Laura-hp9le absolutely "you'll die for this" lol
@@Laura-hp9le yeah but then Lalo went nowhere and fizzled out. He should’ve remained alive because Saul was really afraid in his first episode of BREAKING BAD
saul mentioning Lalo and nacho in the same episode in BB idk if it's planned but damn that's cool af.
@@mem1701movies Fizzled out? Fizzled out???? Wtf bruh
The only thing missing from this amazing interview is some talk about the man, the legend, Nacho Varga
Vince is unbelievably always almost surprised when someone tells him they love his work. Not one perfectly ended series but two... Legend.
Pity elements the ending of both shows were so similar
The grand theme of the Brraking Bad and Better Call Saul universe is not only “character is fate” but above all, “crime doesn’t pay.” No matter how smart these characters are and how elaborate their plans to get away could be, at the end the bill comes due.
Basically the point of Mike's entire character arc.
I heard a preacher put it like this: “payday someday”
Idk honestly they get away with a lot until something over the top happens. Even if you do what Gus did and take out several family leaders, you don't think the junior officers aren't gonna immediately fight over that? Most criminals who make a lot of money in this world get away. Thats the sad truth.
Um, crime ended up paying Walt's family like a million bucks
@@traebeneck4994 But it cost them so much. They are definitely worse off.
"people say they like it" is the most understated thing to say about a great show, lol
After watching this interview,I realized that Vince, dispite showing intelligence and talent as a writer and director, doesn’t seem like one of those mega talented nerds who plan every step of the story ahead and everything, instead, his greatest strength seems to be his humbleness and his teamwork.
He knows how to pick and choose people's suggestions probably as well a let those expand their creative minds
The best show I have ever seen, just a brilliant story filled with so many great character arcs. Everyone did an outstanding job.
Same here dude. Just incredible. One of the most amazing parts to me is they were able to make everything that happened in the end sort of expected, but nonetheless awesome even though a lot of it wasn’t nearly as action packed as breaking bad
Lalo was my fave
Great show in my top ten of all time
Class show. Not as good as BB tho
Well besides breaking bad. Both equally amazing but different as well
Howard Hamlin's death still makes me so sad. It feels like the best friend I always wanted to have lost forever. And the way he fell to the floor, like Chuck in the copy machine store, was so well done that it gave me PTSD.
Funny, the Hamlin character was a totally corrupt, self-indulgent, creep that you would want as a best friend?
Really? Gave you PTSD?

I would watch anything Vince puts into the Ether. This man is a once-in-a-generation storyteller and character creator.
Hopefully along with most of the team from Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, there are a lot of producers, writers, etc that made those shows great.
@@bencarlson4300 💯
I loved how the show ended. Jimmy proving to himself, the audience, and the prosecution representing everyone that always doubted his ability as a lawyer that he's become one of the best lawyers around. Perhaps even better than his brother Chuck despite their different approaches to practicing law. Where Chuck was practically worshipped in the field while Jimmy was always castigated and told by his clients that he was a lawyer only guilty people hire.
After proving that, he didn't need the Saul persona anymore and the only thing Jimmy really needed now to feel fulfilled was Kim's approval and show her that he's back to being the man she fell in love with years ago.
No he only proved chuck right because that was a dumb move if he took the 7 seven he would have been a legend now he just another dirty lawyer in jail!
@@nastyyella300 it was important for his growth as a person to face real consequences to all the terrible things he did. Had he only faced 7 years, He would have continued a life of emptiness which would have probably led to eventual suicide, there was nothing left for him after prison.
I also like the realization that you know that he is not going to be anybody's bitch in prison, but he's going to be popular because of what he did to help everybody. He'll makes many friends, and that's the best you can hope for in prison.
@@nastyyella300 he would have been a dirty lawyer in prison with 7 years too. so you think chuck would have agreed with saul taking the case to court and lying to swing a juror? that is what chuck would support? its exactly what chuck would expect, not him confessing and taking more time.
Thank you, Dr Freud. Actually they had no choice. Couldn't kill him as that would be trite & redundant of Walter White, couldn't let him get away bc that's still against the Hollywood "code" so they compromised. He goes to jail and they have the option of springing him several years later w a Kim legal technicality.
I love that Saul is introduced to the show as a "criminal" lawyer and ends the series as a criminal-lawyer
Vince is just such a great guy! So humble and always diffusing praise toward his team. I would love to work for him, and it's clear to me why his team is so profoundly good at what they do. They are all in it for the right reason - to tell a great story. We need more of that in the entertainment industry.
Vince G. is immortalized and GOATED. What a story teller and show maker! I know a lot of other folks deserve credit but this guy made two immaculate series back to back and they will both forever be remembered as the best that Television could get.
Vince Gilligan made Breaking Bad, Peter Gould was mostly responsible for the success of Better Call Saul.
I love how Vince is so honest and down to earth about how TV is made. It's so valuable to us youngins in the industry.
Vince Gilligan: We just make it up as we go along.
BrBa and BCS: (two of the most tightly-written shows in existence) 🤣
Favorite BCS episodes each season:
1. Pimento
2. Inflatable
3. Chicanery
4. Coushatta
5. Bagman
6. Rock And Hard Place/Plan And Execution/Waterworks/Saul Gone... I can't pick just one for the last season...Nippy gets an honourable mention as well, this final season was great.
Damn good list, tho I'd 100% put Winner for season 4. Werner's (utterly beautifully-shot) death, Jimmy's (ultimately manufactured) emotional reckoning with the events of the previous three seasons, and (above all) the ICONIC finger-guns ending: "'S'all good, man!"
Up until the last half of season 6, I was absolutely loving the show but I was wondering how they could possibly reconcile the way Saul is in Breaking Bad with the way he is in Better Call Saul. But they absolutely nailed it in the end. That time skip after Kim breaks up with Jimmy took the show to another level.
My God “Better call Lalo and the Salamanca twins” that would be insane
Loved the ending and the entire 2 shows and movie. Such a huge accomplishment to keep it great the entire time.
I loved all three of them. Great writing in all of them
I enjoyed both shows, but the ending to Better Call Saul was far from great. It felt forced, almost contrived to fit what the writer's wanted rather than how the character was behaving.
@@henrythegreatamerican8136 The ending was perfect. I don’t know what you’re talking about
@@henrythegreatamerican8136 - Agree entirely about the ending. Really disappointing in an otherwise brilliant show. They want us to believe that Jimmy would trade 7 years inside for 86? That’s not the Jimmy we have come to know. It’s almost like the ending was focus group tested … and the producers/writers went with the most popular…. such a lost opportunity.

Getting 86 years sentence instead of 7 was the twist within the twist
He'd never see 86 years. He's too good. Good behavior, and Kim will show up and get him out in 15-20 years.
I'd like to see a Lyle spin off.. What happens to him? He was a loyal employee that achieved Los Pollos standards and was not in the BB timeline. Did he get a Gus funded scholarship to college OR buried under the restaurant?

Wonderful interview! Thank you Vince for what you have given this world😊
You know, where the cows live.
The cows!
Cowhouse... God help me
My favorite is from "Fly" when Jesse doses Walt with sleeping pills. "Possum. Big, freaky, lookin' b*tch. Since when did they change it to opossum? When I was comin' up it was just possum. Opossum makes it sound like he's Irish or something. Why do they gotta go changing everything?"
Ahhh wire!!
Vince Gilligan has made his mark in entertainment history. Breaking Bad is the most brilliant series ever created for television. BCS is a close second. I just wish we could have had more Tony Dalton! He was remarkable as Lalo. Absolutely brilliant shows. Nothing else like this universe.
Nothing will ever top the quality of storytelling in this universe.
The greatest Prequal ever made and The Greatest TV show of all time. Vince Gilligan is winning at life.
Peter Gold, The Writing crew, production, everyone behind and in front of the camera played their roles to perfection.
BB and BCS are my all time comfort shows and favourite shows of all time.
I love his answer to "Why black & white for the current days?" - "We just love black & white lmao". No symbolism, no hidden meaning.
I just marathoned BB and ElCamino again for umptnth time and everything hits different after watching BCS series 💎💎💎
Jimmy's atonement was foreshadowed when he did the scene from Network...."You must ATONE" in an older show.
A Lalo spinoff is what we need!! He was way too badass a character to only be featured in limited episodes. Also, a Lalo spinoff would attract a lot of hispanic viewers
Que?
que 💀
No, because Lalo needed to die.
Kim‘s atonement was the crying scene on the bus-Sauls atonement was complete confession on the stand….. both were done to atone for Howard Hamlin‘s death
Unbelievable that the original Better Call Saul premise was a fucking Dr. Katz riff. Honestly wish I could’ve seen any inkling of that, even though what we got is one of the best TV shows ever made lmao
When I first heard about this show that's rather what I was expecting, partly because the title suggests it.
I'm glad that Vince said he wants to challenge himself and step away from the Breaking Bad universe / Anti-hero theme and try something new. He's obviously talented and its great to see when someone wants to get out of their bubble to prove to himself that he can diverse himself. Its also good that he's not taking advantage of his fans and nostalgia of Breaking Bad. Anyone can ride the success train and pump out fan service like a money making machine. But I'd be lying if I didn't say I would like to see a Gus Fring prequel in the future.
I think a lalo sequel would make the most sense. BESIDES a mockumentary post BCS and BB having everyone left over discussing what they know of the events of breaking bad. Maybe ending with Saul getting some time off his sentence for partaking in the documentary.
We need an El Camino II and Breaking Bad 2: spongebob.
We just had the Gus front prequel
Bruh he would exactly go back to the anti-hero theme if he did a Gus prequel, why not something comedic like a Huell prologue
i think Jesse should have got an Alaska movie instead of getting over there story
"A Robot??" definitely is the best line in the whole series. followed closely by "ahhh Wiree"
Powerful scene. "Howard" was actually a decent person. A great group of actors.
Yes. He should not have died.
I'm new to Rich the past couple years, but his astuteness in interviewing Vince about BCS and his new Andy Reid interview made me a lifelong fan. I feel like he's a similar soul to me, just fantastic questions Rich!
Dude ask Vince a question and as he’s answering interrupts him and ask another question. Very professional.
agreed
Keep giving these writers jobs!!!!!!! They deserve it more than anyone in the business!
I can imagine a good spoof ending, where it's like "The Producers", with Jimmy giving out legal advice, to the guards as well, and kicking some percentage up to the warden.
In the RV when Jesse asks Saul, "Who's Lalo?" - just a killer line
Im sure Vince will not be reading these comments, but i dont think Saul committed 87 years worth of sins. He didnt even kill anyone. Everyone want a lawyer like Saul, he seems to have paid for everyones sins. My opinion aside the whole show incuding the ending was brilliant. And i dont think anyone has ever pulled off a prequel and a sequel at the same time. Genious.
The legend of vince gilligan.....thank you
Thank you Vince. Loved it all from day one.
Loved every second of this. I'm from across the pond and have just finished watching BCS. Never thought , in my lifetime, that anything would be better than BB but BCS just is. First time I've actually seen what Vince looks like. I doubt if any of them read these comments but a mighty Thank You to each and every one of you involved in this tele - visual masterpiece. A new meaning to the definition of smart tv. The acting from all concerned was simply outstanding . Rhea's breakdown must be given an award all by itself. Never seen anything like it. Bob's acting throughout, faultless. Sublime.
Interesting reference to redemption in "A Christmas Carol" since Saul was 'visited' by his ghosts in the flashbacks, Mike, Walter and Chuck.
Good point
also, lalo is what a cartel or cirminal orgainzation should have in their leadership. almost james bond like cunning and charming yet brutal and ruthless... he scared me... in the show. brilliant
Bolsa as well
Worse villain in either series. Tuco could be bested, 'cause he was insane.
I wondered if they were going to stick the landing, and man, did they ever. Perfect show from start to finish.
The reason the prosecutor's no-loss record was of note was only in part to show that he was good. It was also leverage Saul used to press home that he posed a threat to that record, which was a big part of that guy's rep and prospects down the line.
I’m so excited that his next project will be science fiction! I had anticipated a “Christmas Carol-ish” ending but had desperately hoped a more X-files-ish / twilight zone slant. Can’t wait to see what Vince Gilligan has in store for us. Thanks for sharing this interview!

Would be great to see a series about a young Hector Salamanca. His brutality and cruelty seem to be a thing of legend in the series. Before Gus became the mind behind the cartel, he was the weapon. His family carried the cartel to what it is today.
