Calvin’s eye removal and recovery (dog double enucleation)

  • When Calvin’s glaucoma got too painful the vet advised removing both eyes (double enucleation) to permanently remove the pain. I was devastated but it ended up being harder on me than it was on him. Calvin is now six weeks post-op and doing wonderfully. He was already mostly blind due to cataracts prior to the eye removal so it’s been a pretty easy transition for him. He’s been able to map out the house quickly and navigates well.
    Along with no eyes Calvin also has no teeth so that’s why his tongue hangs out most of the time. But even with no eyes and no teeth he’s still a happy little dachshund!

    Thanks for sharing this. It gives me hope for my sweet boy. He deserves to have a life without severe eye pain. We reversed the cataracts so we were hopeful his eyes would heal, but he keeps scratching them and spends more time in a cone than not for the past 2 years or so. I love that Calvin did so well and was playing in just 2 weeks! Beautiful.

    Thank you for sharing your experience. My 16 year old min pin is in surgery right now to have his eye removed and I'm a wreck. Your video helped me feel reassured that he's going to be ok. I hope you and your pack are well.

    This helped us with our doggie - he had the same procedure - we were wondering about recovery - this helped. Thanks again.

    this made me so happy to see ❤️ my senior fospice dog recently developed glaucoma and i just found out today she will be having a double enucleation wednesday. i'm only 23 and it's been really really hard on me, i literally developed a stress rash from worrying so much. this video made me feel a lot better to see another dog going through an almost identical situation and doing so well!! the only extra thing i have to worry about is that my girl also has early stage heart failure. she's still expected to pull through alright, like your dog she was also already blind and has adjusted very well to that. thank you for sharing this!

      I’m glad this helped 😊. I was super stressed and ended up in tears more than once after the vet told us he’d need his eyes removed. There’s just something about the eyes that make it harder. But it ended up being much harder on me than it was on Calvin. He was already blind before the removal so there wasn’t much change for him except now the pain from glaucoma was gone. He’s more playful and spunky now and I can tell he feels much better.

    Thanks for the video. My 18 month pug puppy had an eye removed today. She injured both eyes 3 weeks apart, they ulcerated and ruptured, in spite of all the treatment. One eye has healed somewhat, and she has some vision in it, but the other was damaged beyond repair and got infected and painful, so we decided to take it out. I'm wondering why Calvin wasn't wearing an e-collar. It's so nice to see him happy again after living with 2 painful eyes. Nothing worse than seeing your pets in pain.

    We are going through this now. Had the right eye removed a month ago, and thought she was "depressed." Turns out she's been in pain from the glaucoma in the other eye. Pressure went from 11 to almost 100% in a month! So now she is having the left removed on Monday. The pain meds have brought her almost to her full, playful self again. Can't wait for surgery to be over. Thank you for sharing. 🤍

      Calvin is doing great! He’s starting to slow down as he’s getting older (13 this year) but he still loves to play with his toys and snuggle. I know it depends on the dog but he adjusted to being blind quickly and it doesn’t bother him when he bumps into things. He’s got the house mapped out well so he knows his way around and he even likes going new places and exploring. I think the surgery was harder on me than it was on him in retrospect. We definitely made the right decision and I’m sure you did too.

    how did you clean the wounds? thank you..

    • @northwesthome6918
      @northwesthome6918  Před 4 lety +1

      The vet said we didn’t need to clean the wounds. We just had to keep them dry and watch for any oozing (if that happens you can carefully wipe it away with a cotton ball but Calvin didn’t experience any oozing or bleeding). Hope that helps!

      @@shellshelle8528 my dog is almost 16 and just had a double enucleation done. She had no problems during anesthesia and was up and running around a few hours after the surgery. I’d recommend doing a full blood test before anesthesia to check for any potential risks.
