"We're going to be wearing safety glasses and gloves" ... proceeds to use the weapons without gloves. 🤔
Quality comment 😂
Elden Ring Veteran Prosthetic.
This makes me feel weirdly nostalgic thinking back when i was playing with my tape measure and pretending it was a sword.
Yes!
Everyone did😂
That was exactly what I thought. They just made a tape measure without the useful marking.
So true. You were weird if you never did that. 😂
I legit think they may have just used a tape measure and taken all marking from it. It sounds exactly like one, and in the one "close up" we have of it, and in some further less-close-up shots, it seems to bend in the same ways as a tape measure. Like tape measures have that u-bend in them which can give them surprising rigidity if the forces are aligned in the right way. I think you can see that curve in the "blade" a few times. Also, tape measures are everywhere, and where else are you going to get metal that is so thin? You could probably get it, but it'd be easier to get a tape measure. Still kind of embarrassing lol
I pretended it was a lightsaber
Nate, "I feel like a school girl with a ribbon!" Yes that is the point. Lol.
Someone is not going to earn that blackbelt in rhythmic gymnastics martial arts.

meanwhile... in the house:
Mrs Brooks: "Has any one seen my tape measure?".
The tape measure has a bend in it meaning edge alignment is impossible. The traditional swords is far more stiff and controllable which I think makes enough of a difference even while being bendy.
eh it's a measuring tape, what else do you expect.
yeah, the only time a measuring tape is a dangerous weapon is when you reel it in.
@@nowhereman3988 True fact!
Just what I thought... It supposed to be best comment ever... 😅😅😅😂😂😂
Was just about to comment the same
Those things are still deceptively sharp and can cut you. Now Imagine one made of metal ribbon and that would be deadly
For people that didn't pay attention to the video. Because the comment section is full of them. They clearly know that a real whip sword exists they talked about it quite often in the video. They say that its not easy to come by in their area. Along that people train with it for years among other things about it throughout the entire video.
They also said that they made it just for fun to test the idea of a anime weapon. That its length changes from scene to scene.
The noise of the steel. Wooobble Wobbble!!!
Think it would benefit from the tip being slightly weighted, perhaps just the normal thickness for a katana and then the rest is the whip thickness
I suppose that depends on if you want it to function more like a whip or a flail. Whips have the smallest amount of weight at the tip, because that part needs to be light in order to achieve the highest speed.
Death by a thousand paper cuts 😂
Nate didn't actually break the weapon, When hitting the water bottle. He just struck so unbelievably quick.....That the blade phased right through handle and the target!
You can make a decent urumi out of bandsaw blades. Then you have to learn to use it properly. I would recommend using armor and a shield, such can prevent some nasty cuts during the learning curve.
All of a sudden, Nunchucks look good.
Well, sure, they'll sound like a good idea when the alternative is a *measuring tape!*
Wonder if they'll ever test sword-chucks.
...I'll see my ancient self off the internet, now.
looks like a measuring tape and sounds like one too
Don't grab the tape measurer for self defense. Gotcha.
I bet mail would make it cake. Then you've got a bit more versatility with this abomination.
Actually, if you grab the tape measure and grab it by the tape, the housing can be quite a decent flail...for one or two hits...
Try again with a bandsaw blade
some urumi are literally just bandsaw blades with a hilt.
@@ShiningDarknesyes
Absolutely nostalgia bait ad I love it 😂.
Also Boromir "im tired bos"
They did have the Urumi in ancient India. Though they were a bit thicker than a tape measure. A really long band saw blade may be a good base to start with. They are pretty flexible & thin while being tempered well enough to take an edge.
Oh dear this looks dangerous! Did you gave it to Nate to test it?
PS: the demon slayer version is more of a sharp magical rythmic gymnastics ribbon than urumi.
Dumb ways to die~ So many dumb ways to die~
Thanks, now I have to get that song out of my head before I can fall asleep. 🤣😂
@@Tentin.Quarantino at least you're not going down easy street
12:10 Nice to see those Decapitations where the head stays attached for a few seconds; AREN'T exaggerations!
Nitinol whip sword might actually work.
Just look up Urumi whip swords India they are a thing
Are they though? Like do they actually _DO_ anything besides be a performance "weapon?" No, no they do not. I mean against a naked man, sure, but even slightly thick clothing is enough to stop it because it has almost no cutting ability.@@USS_Grey_Ghost
Yeah , but it's up to 7 blades up to several meters long , that are constantly flying through the air , so foe's face etc is in danger . and remember , that it is not a battlefield weapon , it's like dagger or rapier @@ShiningDarknes
@@user-xf2mg2ou9g What are you talking about? Daggers and rapiers are extremely deadly, and both were used on the battlefield.
In a context where people wear little clothing and armor, the Urumi could be a strong weapon for crowd control. Cutting with it looks very tricky, but I've found enough cutting tests to see that it can cut fairly deep, probably even enough to cut off fingers, disable a hand or cause somewhat serious wounds. And as you've said, the show itself is intimidating. So there are uses for it, although it's not surprising that the Indians eventually dropped it in favor of other swords (that were probably already used alongside the Urumi before it went out of fashion).
@@ShiningDarknes I was gonna say the "real" thing looks like total bullshit too lol. I don't even think it would be very effective against a completely naked opponent. The blades simply do not have enough mass to inflict anything more than superficial cuts. They could be as sharp as razor blades and it wouldn't matter, they still aren't making it any deeper than skin.
It would be interesting to see you guys test a chainsword version, where a whip or chain has bladed segments attached at regular intervals along its length.
Ivy's weapon from Soul Caliber
Nate's uncanny ability to break things is great
It doesn't only bend side to side, it also bends forwards and backwards in the anime, that's what gives it power and a little bit more control
Whips technically use more bending forward and backward then side to side in a strike
Mitsuri’s sword is loosely based off a real-life sword from India called the Urumi. The sword in the anime is not particularly accurate in terms of appearance and how she carries it but it is a real weapon. The actual weapon is made up of multiple sheets/tails instead of one and is worn by wrapping it around the users waist instead of being placed in a scabbard. How she uses it is also surprising accurate in some regards because despite being considered a sword it is more often used more like a flail or whip in rapid circular motions meaning that the person using it must be both flexible and quick, furthermore it is best suited for striking multiple enemies instead of a single target. It was not a particularly common weapon in Indian or Sri Lanka either due to how difficult it was to wield and produce ( you had to reach the final level of Indian martial arts training to be even considered for training with it ). Demon slayer for the most part got it right.
He literally mentioned this multiple times in the video and even showed one. Did you even watch it?
@shawnwolf5961 they didn't mention it in the very beginning though.
As an indian i have never seen it irl except for movies but i think its in a museum😅
@jamta69 Indian Proveen Mohan did a whole video about this and other Indian weapons, that people still train to use.
@@jamta69 Yep it is in Museums. Again, it was very difficult and dangerous to use so it isn't very popular.
Can you all try a burning whip, kinda like the Balrog? I’d be interested to see if it can actually catch things on fire or be useful in any way.
Nate flailing around to no avail with the channel theme playing in the background gives me life 😂😂😂
Ahh so cool I was hoping they do something like this. I love Mitsuru's weapon
Totally didn't make me think of Persona 3's Mitsuru, which is rather ironic with me having thought of an anthropomorphic Sylveon that would use basically a whip rapier, lol.
@@Daniel_Coffman If Mitsuru reads that sentence you'll be in for an execution!

The fact that it couldn't defeat a pool noodle was just too funny.
Surely it would lose out to the mighty STICK.
We wiggled our tape measure at the target as best we could, but for some reason it wasnt very effective...
The only reason this works in anime is because she can will it to move as she wants using her "kata"
Can we just take a minute to respect boromir and how legendary he is
One does not simply disrespect Boromir.
In the anime, the sword was bendy, but also still looked like it had some weight.
You can't make a bendy sword like this IRL with lots of weight. but if you attached a weight to it at the end, you could simulate weight.
Dude this is why i love your channel
I have an idea for how to make a whip sword. You cut a sword blade into chevron like segments, and placed some sort of flexible spring loaded core linking them together.
The idea being the flex of the internal core connecting the segments lets them bend around like a whip. Then as an added bonus you can add a mechanic into the hilt where if you pull down the core and lock it in place you can tension the core, forcing the segments into alignment with each other to allow it to act like a normal sword. So while the core is under tension it acts like a normal sword, and while it is loose it acts like a whip.
The issue is I fully expect this idea to be prone to failure, having a flexible core like that inside an item designed for melee combat. But could be a cool proof of concept, and maybe there is a more clever way to implement the system or very durable materials that would make the failure risk much lower.
Aircraft cable is surprisingly weak when stressed. Not surprised that they change them often. Lol. I feel like we need mythical elements to make fun stuff like that. Stuff that doesn't degrade or rust or weaken.
So graceful.
So majestic.
This is akin to me and my sister beating each other with cardboard rolls from a roll of paper towels.
Could've tried maybe using some wide steal gauge wire that runs the "blade's" length and/or add something like a large ball baring at the end. Give more stiffness to the the blade and let you carry momentum better.
An alternative "cheap" whip sword test blade could be a chain saw chain attached to a handle. At the very least it will have a better cutting edge and weight compared to a measuring tape... It would also be quite a bit more dangerous to test, however.
Now, I absolutely need to see your opinions on Tengen's Cleavers!!!
Edit: If it's deemed to be effective, I'd love to see what would happen if you taped your non-dominant hand closed, and fought without it as Tengen did.
12:00 You may not become the Hashira of Love, but, you entertain very well with your standard cuts
i was thinking maybe a scaled down version of renji's zanpakuto could work. segments of blade a few inches long, each connected to the next at at least 2 points. still not going to be easy to use though, with our lowly spiritual pressure.
If Monty Python were to do a sequel to their famous Holy Grail, this would make for a fantastic skit. I dare you to rewatch the floppy whipping parts of the video with Monty Python commentary running through your head.
~Now whip it! Whip it...bad~
I made one a few years ago out of steel pallet bands and it was perfect, flexible enough to whip but rigid enough to cut.
When you order your Demon Slayer whip sword off of Wish.
I feel like, if one is going to have to have a whip-sword hybrid, then the best way would be to just tie or otherwise attach a sword onto the end of a whip and pray to high heaven it doesn't come loose.Or a smaller more wieldy blade.
I just had a conversation with one of my players for my D&D campaign, about him wanting a whip sword. then I see this in my recommendation. perfect timing on making this video. 😄
4:37 we have the technology. We can rebuild him.
I am so here for Nate's evolution of not being able to cut at the start to this
07:00 "I'll give you a tip" 😂 Nate tipped the sword...
To be fair, Ruroni Kenshin also did the whip sword thing ages ago before Demon Slayer did it.
"Now this IS made of steel, I just wanted to be clear about that"
*Shakes tape-measure*
Great video, very entertaining to watch
In construction (or rather deconstruction) They use "floppy hammers". Mainly because they are easier on your hands with vibrations.
A floppy sword with a large blade, that is still relatively stiff, so much that you can get some force through would be interesting.
Maybe with knee joints, so you you have no freedom of movement orthogonally to the blades side and only in the blade front/back-axis. Possibly with aditional springs or rubber in the joints to have it not be super floppy, but can translate some force.
Nate being both frustrated and excited while Tyranth was pretty even keel is very funny to watch. Keep it coming!
Put a bunch of razor blades on a metal cable/wire and you'll cause terrifying damage as it wraps around and diga in.
Is it as cool?
Hell no!
Is it unimaginably painful/disabiliting? You have no idea!
I just realized that I keep getting Domino's ads on Shad's videos. Specifically, the "price slice" ones.
You mean from Ruroni Kenshin. A minor antagonist turned non-abtagonost uses one in the Kyoto/new sword arc.
My introduction to the "Whip Sword" was through the TV Show Deadliest Warrior. So It could lacerate but... wear something like a full denim or bicker gear and you could just walk into their attack zone like a full plate knight quelling a bar fight.
Kenshin Himura fought a guy, Cho, who also wielded a whipsword. Wore it as a belt, when not in use.
Like the real Urumi
It's the first time in YEARS that I've watched a Shad video.... who the heck are these people?
A couple of hobos who found his house, his armory, and his camers, then started filming their antics
I think in anime it is not sword technik but dancing with a ribbon.
"We made the whip sword from Demon Slayer" Who remembers Cho the Sword Hunter? Man I feel old lol
Oh! i see interesting design
Reminds me of Ivy's sword from Soul Calibur, though with hers it was a whip with a segmented sword spaced across the whip
I'll will begin a membership to your CZcams. I will support your channel as long as I am financially able to. Thanks for the awesome content.
I remember the guy in Rurouni Kenshin that had a (stylized) version of this kinda weapon.
Like a collector, iirc
Great Video. SHAAAD!!! We need a Flamberge. Chat has spoken.
I'm glad to see you guys being a bit more *humble* with these things now, seeing as you've seen a lot of stuff that you thought wouldn't work actually *does* .
And on that note, I think you guys should look a man named Anthony Delongis up; he's able to strike with his whip with *pinpoint* accuracy not because he's spent literal *decades* practicing, but because of his specific *technique* , which's not only something he's taught to other people, but is actually in fact really *simple* . So simple in fact, that after practicing it for only three *months* , Michelle Fifer, the actress who plays Catwoman in the Batman Returns movie, was able to do the scene where Catwoman whips three manniquines' heads off on the *very first* take! Seriously, you won't believe just how *simple* & *effective* it is.
A Flail Whip would sound interesting at the very least
That thing hates Nate
"I feel like 10 foot is the perfect range"
Less than 10 feet he only gives it 2 wee taps 😂
One thing I think is worth noting is that a whip works because it tapers off towards the end. Perhaps if this weapon also did so it could be more effective?
I would also imagine a tri bladed, segmented blade could be effective too. The tri blade would eliminate the need for proper edge alignment, and the segment would allow for a strong material while also being able to flex. It would also make it easy to decrease in width as you go further along the whip.
I quite liked the part where they just messed around cutting things with swords.I think that a video where you cut things with lots of weapons
This poor, sad noodle of a sword is the poster child for "longer is not always better".
9:24 Kudos for that shot. It came out beautifully.
like fighting with a gymnastics ribbon
This was hilarious 😂. Thanks lads
whip-swords, that is to say, ribbon-thin swords that are stupidly long, are pure fantasy. There is simply no way to control something like that.
I mean the urumi exists.
They were used in ancient India. I dunno how long they were, but Shah Rukh Khan uses one in the 2001 Indian Docudrama of Asoka.
The urumi is not a whip sword, nor is it a ribbon sword. It isn't even a sword, it is a flail both in design and use. It is designed to be something you don't want to get hit with, it is a defensive tool that you sing quickly around you so whoever is coming at you doesn't want to get close. They are barely weapons at all.@@spybreak23
Would love to see "Jacques the Whipper" from the Rennaissane Fairs try this.
I think a way of adding power to the whip sword would be to add a weight to the end, would also help it wrap around stuff
Nate breaking the whip sword in slow motion with epic music is the best thing of this video xD
Anything from Demon Slayer I am absolutely here for!!
Nate didn't "break" it. It was a "suprise-shortening". He tried out the shiv like he proposed in the beginning
Seem to remember the sword whips of the Castlevania series being more segmented, then having a link of chain between each blade segment. WHICH, watching this, looks like that one would be way more terrifying.
Might I recommend trying a war flail, if designed properly it's a God tier articulated weapon 🔗
If you had a bit of weight towards the end of the steel it may have some cutting ability (lacerating) similar to a bull whip
reminds me of the old BBC metal tape video recorders. That steel ribbon was sharp and moving fast.
Would a snake sword like the one from Soulcalibur move more like the demon slayer because of the control of the retraction to make it more stiff when you need it to be?
I honestly don't see how it would work without going from high mass to lower mass as it progresses like a whip with the blade(s?) at (near?) the end...
If i was trying to make a tape measure sword like this, I'd probably put a light bit of extra weigh on the tip, a whip tapers down so the edge can go very fast, the thin metal swinging in a circle would keep tension at least.
It works when you have someone proficient in a belt sword or whip sword. They would have gotten a master from India like they did on another show.
Tyranth dissing on Nate's aim just to have Nate immediately miss the bottle is the most Shadiversity thing in this video
For a proper whip effect, it needs to be tapered so as to transfer the force in a concentrated manner, and with a slightly thicker blade, the wobble and twisting would be much reduced. It doesn’t have to be much, a tape measure is thinner than 1/10th of a mm, but one of those steel reinforcement bands (the ones with holes in them) that are 1/3rd of a mm would make for a much better simulation, though getting a taper on it would be nigh-impossible. It would also be more dangerous, if the edge was sharpened.
I love the mythbusters' style opening. They even included Buster! let's go
Draw cut was perfect
Adding a bit of weight toward the end might have been beneficial. Like a couple of button sized rivets or something.
