Vastus lateralis release | Treating ITBS

  • The iliotibial band runs along the outside of the thigh from above the hip to just below the knee. It's role is not altogether understood in sports medicine, but it is know that it stores and releases elastic energy while walking and running.
    Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS) is when dysfunction of the iliotibial band causes sharp pain on the outside of the knee. It can also radiate pain into the outer thigh, calf, and even to the hip. Runners are most likely to first notice the pain when running downhill, but as the syndrome progresses it can occur even when walking.
    This technique can help manage both the symptoms of ITBS and reduce the overall recovery time. It uses a broad approach that focusses on the vastus lateralis where the trigger points cluster around the knee. The amount of pressure you'll utilise will depend on the client, so use your best judgement to balance comfort and maximum effect.
    A grippy cream like Premax Original combined with maintaining knee flexion will help you directly manipulate the tissue through the full range of movement. Start with a soft, loosely-held fist and move the tissue medially as much as possible. Then you'll work longitudinally along the vastus lateralis.

    Shoo buddy... Had a mishap with a trampoline a little over a decade ago. To this day I keep a persistent, painful knot right above the knee because of that dang thing. -_-

    I get pain in that area when internally rotating the hip, the pain is also in the groin but only when doing that motion. Do you have any ideas? Thanks

      P.s forgot to mention when doing the internal rotation my knee will be high up when the pain is produced, if I do the motion with my knee down then there isn't any pain. Sorry if that's confusing

      @@cmcgann1993 so it can be many things , palpation could be the key, from a soft tissue point of view it could be the psoas muscle that attaches just above the lesser trochanter , illicus, or even the Adductor muscles, i would ruling them out first, before thinking it could be coming from the hip joint.

    When I fold my right knee, I get a bump at exactly where vastus lateralis muscle connects to patella. This happens I do any activity like playing badminton, brisk walking etc., I am 50. my BMI is around 30. This bump has no pain. But my right leg has stiffness when I fold. But no tenderness. Can you please suggest remedy

      Hey Soma, is there any swelling around the knee, as you may have some effusion ? Either that or you may have some latent trigger points in the lower region of VL, IF YOU PALPATE IN THAT REGION IS IT tender to touch ?

      ​​@@stuarthindsacademysame goes for me when i fold my left leg it pains like pointing a niddle beside knee like in lower thigh region at a specific point it pains in pushing it too and when I do some activities it starts paining in walking etc. I'm only 16 bmi is 26.2. what can i do to fix that? i wanna join the gym but I can't bcz of this.

    The biggest issue with most of the physio youtubers is quite honestly they are American and either are part of the broseff brigade or so pretentious and up their own arses you can's take them seriously. This bloke is different and actually teaches usual tips on how we can treat injuries.

      Hey Von, so sorry for the delay in response, thank you for such kind feedback mate. I can say why i resonate with most is my no BS approach, and the fact that i draw all my experience from 30 plus years treating 5 days a week in clinic and with Elite/amateur athletes were results are of the utmost. Unfortunately Von most of the people you refer to have little or no true clinic experience. I can tell if an educator has any clinic experience within 1-2 minutes of watching them. Thank you and feel free to give me any feedback Von and share to others that you may feel benefit.
