MXR EVH FLANGER / MXR EVH PHASE 90
Whether he knew it or not at the time, when Eddie Van Halen exploded on the scene he did nothing less than redefine electric guitar playing. From then till the present, he continues to make historical contributions to the legacy of rock music.
Along the way, he chose the MXR Flanger and Phase 90 to play instrumental parts in his innovative sound. Taking this into account, the MXR design team at Dunlop teamed up with EVH to produce these very special signature pedals.
For those who appreciate this legacy and want to be able to add these effects to their arsenal, they'll be excited to know that there is more to these pedals than just the custom striped graphics that over time came to signal a revolution in rock n' roll.
His signature Flanger features all the same analog bucket-brigade technology and incredible range of controls of the timeless MXR classic Flanger. In addition, the pedal includes a special "EVH" Button that instantly overrides all controls and gives you a setting that was painstakingly developed to recreate Eddie's favorite "Unchained" sound.
Similarly, at the heart of the EVH Phase 90 is the same classic, all analog "Block Logo" circuitry that has made it one of the most revered "one-knob wonders" on pedal boards around the globe. However, this pedal features a button that when depressed gives you a second "Script Logo" phasing option, which was the type of circuitry prevalent in the early days of the pedal's creation when EVH created many of his classic recordings. The tonal option that this button provides is also known as the popular "R28" modification.

!
I thought this was rly funny i have no clue why
Love the way this guy captures the "Van Halenesque" feel while skirting copyright infringement. Great job.
Just spit my drink, thinking the same thing.
Its also kind of triggering lol
To my ears this is the best flanger on the market.
That part when he played ain’t talkin bout love… WITHOUT PLAYIN AINT TALKIN BOUT LOVE
I just exploded
Got it on the way right now along with the 5150 overdrive. Also just recently got my first Wolfgang guitar. God speed, King Edward. Thank you for changing the trajectory of my life and millions of other peoples lives.
so far my favorite video produced by Dunlop!
He's playing a modified version of the intro to "Hear About It Later" off the "Fair Warning" album.
awesome pedals ! thanks JD ! and thanks of course Mr. EVH !
Wow! I love the riff variations that he came up with!
The Flanger is my favourite pedal, I use it way too much!! Thanks Ed, all your gear is killer!!
3:27 - 4:15
Kid: Daddy! That man is flipping me off!!
Dad: No son, that's called, "Tappi-"
Kid: Holy Crap!
Best MXR demo EVER!!!
They should have used and EVH 5150III instead of that Mesa.
This video just makes me happy.
all of these videos are so boss. keep doing what you're doing. you have the best pedal demos of any company out there. good sound, good video quality, good range.
not boss.... dunlop
Notice in the video how the "Carbon Copy" delay unit was placed in the amp's effects loop. This is very important, in fact crucial, for getting the delay to sound the way it was designed to without messing up the other effects sounds. (If you've ever experimented with this you know what I'm talking about.) It's really the only way it can be configured if you are using other effects. If you already knew this, I apologize for mentioning it here. But I thought there may be others just starting out with using effects pedals and may benefit from knowing this now rather than later. Rule of thumb: if your amp has an effects loop, place your delay, echo, reverb, etc... in it, while your overdrive and distortion pedals can remain between your guitar and the amp input jack. I almost returned my beloved MXR Carbon Copy pedal years ago because I did not know this information at that time. So glad I discovered it (actually by accident) while experimenting around with it.
Guitagious Thanks for the reminder. I’m about to reconfigure my pedalboard; I haven’t had my paddleboard out in about a decade. I’ve been using the Eleven Rack (digidesign) for a quite a while now. I’m gonna go vintage for a short spell here and play with some of my old toys. LOL!
There are plenty of people who would put delays in front of a cranked Marshall! EVH being one of them! There are no rules when it comes to effects chain order, move them around in the chain and see what sounds best to you.
correct- also how you place distortion, fuzz and OD is key.
TrackHead Studios...Awesome...have fun with your "old toys"!!
True, there are no rules in however you want to connect your effects pedals in your effects chain. Whatever works best for a person is cool. But when it comes to deciding whether to put "time-based" type effects in the effects loop on the back of the amp verses putting them before the input jack on the front, using the loop is definitely the better way to go. (Eddies old Marshall probably didn't have an effects loop back in '77 - '78. If it did, I'm sure he would have found it MUCH better to use his Phase 90 and Echoplex unit in the effects loop.)
Excellent demo, thanks
I can listen to Eddie and this guy play all day
All the guitarists in Dunlop are amazing
EXCELLENT DEMO DUDE! MXR MAKES SOME OF THE BEST PEDALS OUT THERE....P-E-R-I-O-D! LONG LIVE THE M-E-T-A-L! \m/
Great Van Halen style jam.
Fun to watch
Actually perfect, these effects are top of the line, for a short vid they give a decent overview for the amount of time they have.and if you can play, the sound from these effects will make a solid state amp of any size scream.
I'm giving away one of the Phase 90s. Paul Gilbert has referred to it as Van Halen 1 in a box, and I totally agree. Everyone wants some!
Awesome. I want both pedals!
Just now seeing this in 2023, and dang…
This guy ripped and then ripped some more. The only MXR I currently own is the analog chorus, and it’s so much fun.
They sound great!
VERY COOL DEMO! MXR MAKES SOME KILLER PRODUCT!
Killer tone, great pedals and nice guitar playing... yes, this video is getting a " Like"!
Thanks, man!!!
This iis the coolest video out there. I'm a newb when it comes to pedals but I sure know the the sound that I love. I am getting these. Don't care if I get anything else.
Thumbs up for that badass headstock.
Already have the Script logo Phaser but that EVH Phase 90 sure looks sweet... 😄 EVH flanger is a must 🤘😁
MUST HAVE!
i feel exactly the same! All Dunlop's but the tuner
That guy can play! Good job
I love how he has to dance around "Unchained" and not play it because even when selling an Eddie VanHalen pedal, Eddie has such a hard on for litigation that he'll sue you for using one of his songs to sell one of his pedals! hahaa
Eff Yiew more like CZcams will demonetize the video as opposed to Eddie suing. Eddie could sue for the unlicensed use of the stripes on his non licensed Franken-replica
Max Casey It’s sad, but true, that we can’t really know which of the entities (Eddie or Warner Bros. or CZcams) is to blame.
Music is a shared human experience... but like everything else, we get all greedy, monetize things, and start warring with one another.
In the end, we’re really not all that more improved from the Neanderthal, are we
more reason to boycott EVH products- yeah he is and was an all time great guitarist but WTF almost $200 for a simple flanger pedal, really?
pretty much every riff they played. god forbid they play what the artist who made the pedal wrote to show how accurate to the original it is
I doubt EVH would sue. He literally gave Michael Jackson the solo to "Beat it" without taking credit on the album. So more then likely the record company. They're the whores of the business...always have been.
Takes skill to still sound that good even after you've unplugged from the amp...:)
Dunlop makes the best vids!(:
A lot of people don't know that the secret to the Van Halen found is the Mesa Royal Atlantic amplifier. Eddie had a time machine in 78 and that is actually what he put in his marshall head case after a quick trip forward.
Royal Atlantic sounds like shit
Man, that head stock is killer
the best flanger in the world!! i get one today & it's amazing.
next pedal: carbon copy brigth
A good thing to note about this is that if you reduce the speed you can get a convincing rotary simulation sound!
I actually liked that he changed it up cuz I can hear the pedal(s) stand out more. Sometimes these fx clips come across as a mastered recording from the studio instead of someone like the consumer jamming some drunken riffs whenever we get together with our pals and reminisce on the good ol days! More realistic haha!
The guitar is a Custom MJ Engineering "Roadster"
I think the Carbon Copy, EVH Flange and EVH wah would be a great addition to my pedal board. I currently have a wylde overdrive, black label chorus, wylde phaser, noise clamp and dimebag crybaby from hell wah.
Signature brands are ALL exclusive and CAN'T be mixed in a signal path. The electrical tricks MUST be designed to compliment each trick. So, you're wrong!
@@dreyn7780 stop the cap bruhvosevic
Kickass!
EVH, as well as many others, always play with some reverb.
wow pretty cool...thnx bro
awesome guitar
Sweet.
sounds good
THE EVH DTUNA. you add it to a floyd rose sou can go from E standard to drop D with out have to change the set up
Did anyone else forget this video was about pedals while he started soloing? lol
Ordered the Phase 90 within 10 seconds of this guy clicking it on in script mode...I have a block one already...super thick
I am clueless as to what you are doing ... with the equipment ... however, WHOA! I DID dig your EVH style of playing! :D It all looked so 'effortless' ... clean!
3:01-3:22 awesome trick!
Velcro shoes........
i like
It's right above in the Description Dude...It's a Custom MJ Engineering "Roadster" w/ EVH D-Tuna \m/
Immortal- sounds like dance the night away to me.
Rock lives!~
this is a dropped tuning switch/lever. by pulling it out you detune the 6th string one whole step, resulting in Dropped-D. push it back in and you're on standard tuning again.
I think they're trying to imply that it was in the effects loop, since they showed it in the frame before the carbon copy.
Hey, this is Jude Gold playing! Cool, man. Can you do an "Eddie hommage episode" on No Guitar is Safe, please?
yeah, reading along in the description it looks like that script button on this one is the r28 mod
Looks like it was cut out somewhat. Looks better with the whole headstock if ya ask me. I was thinking the same thing.
I love mine
Now this is how you sell a product (or two)!
look up Pro guitar shop's demo of the normal MXR Flanger. They dial it in
Oh. My. God.
great sounds. are the phase and flange in the loop or in front of the amp?
R.I.P Eddie
the jumper cable looks so cool..
anyone knows what brand it is?
Royal Atlantic \m/ Hell yeah
FUCKING AWESOME
THis guys great
agreed.
sick ass guitar, what type of head stock is that? And how do I make one?
Songs order :
Hear About It Later
Unchained
(Eruption?)
Ain't Talk About Love
I'm The One
Atomic Punk
Dance The Night Away
(One more time Eruption?)
I have no idea if this is it 🤷♂️
6 Nightmares forgot women in love
Jacob Allen sorry dude, I've not yet listen all Van Halen songs 😅
What is that song he's playing before unchained?
is the flanger in the front of the amp or the fx loop...can't get my boss bf2 to sound like that at all
Is the tap harmonic riff at 3:01 from a VH song or did he just make it up?
+Armon Sari, It's a faux version of the breakdown part in Dance the Night Away.
***** Right
From one of the songs of off vh2
I have yet to try the EVH Flanger and hear an actual flanger sound. None of them seemed to work.
whats the second riff he plays with the distortion and flanger
What kinda guitar is that ? Looks awesome. Great playing and you sound awesome.
I'm new to effects pedals so please don't judge me. What does 100% analog mean?
rip Eddie
When the EVH button is selected, are the controls useless basically? As in do the controls effect the settings on the button being pressed, or is it just one set sound?
What is the length and width of the pedal I would like to know if it will fit on my board
what happens if you turn them both on at the same time
nothing against the dude in the video, but it would have been cool since we never see his face that when the video comes to the end, he lowers his head in frame & it's eddie with that grin on his face. the flange is awsome
I'm loving that intro riff. Is that based off any van halen lick?
Its based off the song "Hear About It Later" from Van halens Fair Warning album.
ohh holy flanger *-------------------------*
It's so u can go down to drop D without undoing the locking nuts
4:03 Can I buy that full set?
Who's the guitar neck from? Love that Lucite headstock.
Many thanks! Now I see it's not Lucite but an open "U". But it's a Roadster, not a Mirage, correct?
What guitar is he using I like the headstock
0:04 why is my name in the video
Because you’re a killer guitar player! 🎸😊
I know the flanger has the instant "unchained" button, but does anyone know the actual settings on the 4 knobs for that sound?
@@mulfss 8 years later from the time of my initial post, yeah, I figured it out. 😆
@@revsharp777 thank god after 8 years😆
Anyone know what songs he's playing in the very beginning?
