      Yeah, its not Gordon's fault that he got those DUI's. The bar tenders made him drink and then drive. And when he robbed houses, that not his choice either - that mega millionaire needed the cash. And drinking before games - we all get drunk at our place of employment. And don't tell that taking illegal drugs is STUPID either. C'mon bro - Gordon is a victim!

    • @CollegeFootballNerds
      @CollegeFootballNerds Před 5 lety +14

      @@DougSchofield I didn't say he was a victim. I didn't say he wasn't responsible for his actions. I was just thanking Flemlo for providing some insight into the man's story beyond merely breaking out torches and pitchforks. Addiction is horrible, it clouds your judgement, it ruins lives. We can either try and learn something from these cautionary tales, or keep doing what we've always done and never see things get better.

      @DougSchofield Před 5 lety +2

      @@CollegeFootballNerds I know you didn't say he was a victim. I said that because FlemLo is making so many excuses for Gordon. I agree with your addiction statement too. • @CollegeFootballNerds
      @CollegeFootballNerds Před 5 lety +5

      I didn't see Flemlo excusing away what happened as much as he was providing back story. I had no idea Gordon got addicted to drugs in the 7th grade, but I do know how addiction can be an impossible bond for a lot of people who can't break it. I think people like Gordon need a healthy balance of tough love and grace in their lives. Too much of either pushes them right back down the wrong path.

Doctors had me on oxycodone for 7yrs then government w there opiet crisis forced my doctor and all doctors to just cut us off our meds cold turkey. I was on 30mg oxycodone 6 to 8 times a day for 7 years who ever thought I could just stop taking them has there own mental illness. That pushed me to the street looking for opiets that whole time I had a career. Until I was forced to street drugs I lost my family job and everything I had in life. Bro - your foundation point was brilliant.
    As a recovering addict, who started out on pain meds from surgical procedure - I can attest to continuing drug use is not exactly a conscious choice but an imbalance or defect in the brain, or for alcohol - an allergy. I have so much compassion and empathy for those struggling with this, but there's a fine line between using this issue as a problem versus an excuse. I love a good comeback story and was rooting for Josh super hard during his NFL return.
    I hope anyone struggling gets the help they need to permanently overcome such a toxic way to live
    Cheers FlemLo. Always love your content and watch as often as possible. You're never quick to judge and sitting on the outside - I can appreciate that, respect 👊

Pulled myself back together and got sober again. Used to be an athlete back in the day had a serious injury and multiple surgeries which put me on pain killers. I also happen to live about 20 minutes from Gillette so I followed Gordon pretty closely the last couple of months. For many it's hard for people to let go of the past, especially the feelings of inadequacy and shame from growing up with a troubled family life. @losangelescardinals Před 5 lety +24

    This might be an unpopular opinion but here goes:
    Let me first say that I hope he gets help and is able to live a long productive life. Some people think he’s just wasted talent, which is harsh because he’s still a person. But some other people say that you can’t say anything bad about him which I think is incorrect. I understand that addiction is a disease not just a word. But unlike many other people who suffer from addiction to drugs, alcohol, sex, gambling or whatever, Josh is a million dollar athlete which means he has access to a bunch of methods and people to make sure he’s doing what he’s suppose to be doing. I don’t think it’s fair to treat him like he’s a sick puppy, he’s an adult going through a tough part of his life. Obviously it’s a very difficult process and not everyone gets it on their first few tries but he has to be better he has others that rely on him like his children and his teammates. To say that it’s almost okay for him to relapse because it’s hard is ridiculous. No shit it’s hard, that’s life. You got to find strength there because if you have no willpower then you’ll never get over it. I’m talking about the willpower to admit you have a problem not to get over it. He recently had that and was able to try to turn things around for this year. But he constantly is afraid to admit that he still has a problem. For example, HE posted on social media to say he was leaving the pats. One could look at that and say that he had the strength to admit that he messed up and relapse and made it known to fans first. But considering the NFL was about to suspend him I sadly can’t buy that. I think he wanted to get in front of this because he didn’t want people to think he let them down and instead made it seem like he was making this decision independently. Moving back to my point about willpower, again, I don’t mean the willpower to quit. That’s something I don’t expect from anyone to have because that takes a lot. I know that weed is probably a coping mechanism and he got suspended for using it and that weed being illegal in the NFL is stupid especially now. However, when he signed an NFL contract, HE knew that weed was illegal. If your job drug tests you and you know that and you still fail it you have no one to blame but yourself. Josh has failed himself more than anyone and I appreciate that he’s still trying to take care of his problem now. I could care less about the stats on the field if he was consistently sober, but that’s not the issue right now. And think about all the teammates and coaches that wasted, and yes I mean wasted, their time getting him up to speed with the playbook. Josh Gordon having a family is a common excuse but you know who also has a family? Tom Brady, Bill Belichick, Tyrod Taylor, Hue Jackson, Josh McDaniels, the list goes on and on. They put their personal lives aside to help out Josh to make sure he was prepared on Sundays. You think their families were happy about that? I’ve said it before Josh needs help and I hope he gets it, but people need to stop shielding him from legitimate criticism. Not “stay off the weed” or “he’s wasted so much talent” but rather, “you had all these people you tried to help you, who care about you, and you let them down?” or “do you realize you have an addiction?”

      Of course he realizes he has an addiction man, have you ever listened to him? One of the hallmark signs of a recovering addict is the way they are open about their addiction, and he's been exactly that. Also, I seriously do doubt that he knew he was gonna be suspended when he made that statement. He's not perma banned, they haven't even said if he came up dirty, for all we know he could've gotten caught w something, even something minor like k2, kratom, alcohol, maybe was found w someone who had something, who knows. Something that he might not have expected to be suspended for. Whatever it was hopefully it'll come to light and explain why it might hv looked like he was trying to capture the narrative. I don't think he was though, he's not shady like that.

    • @0ptimal
      @0ptimal Před 5 lety +1

      And also, a deep rooted addiction has no mercy for those around you. It has no mercy for you either, the addicted, or your wants, needs, morals, values. You are forced to succumb to it, or you learn to cope. He just hasn't fully learned to cope on his own yet. I guarantee he never wanted to let anyone down. Just hasn't had a choice, not until he has the tools to do so.
