  • Well it's all soldered together and running so let's chuck it in the TRX4-based NWSD Scattergun and see how it climbs?!

    What ESC? I heard you say the motor was a Hobbywing, but I see no info for the ESC. Is it a budget sensored model? Link to the product would be great.

    • @JustScalin
      @JustScalin  Před 3 lety +7

      It's actually a no-name 120a ESC (although unbranded and uses the same software as Hobbywing) and the motor is a Surpass 3548 1400kv. Unfortunately in further testing the magnets fell off the motor and the ESC set on fire.
      I've got a follow-up coming soon, which has similar results and has some recommendations for anyone looking to do budget brushless sensorless outrunners.
      For now I'd suggest these cheapo ESC's are probably only good in sensored mode as I've just had too many fires and issues using their sensorless startup at low RPM.
      I'm going to keep investigating, although it's starting to rack-up the cost, and see if I can find the right settings etc but for now I won't recommend any of it due to the temperamental nature.

      @@JustScalin Definitely sounds unworthy of time and $$. I believe the Castle SW4 is the highest quality budget esc (as opposed to Mamba X) for sensorless outrunner motors. I currently use an SW4 with a Turnigy D3542 outrunner and it’s smooth and powerful. 👍🏼

    • @JustScalin
      @JustScalin  Před 3 lety +2

      Yeah the SW4 is the best sensorless ESC. I run one on my comp rig. Will possibly try the surpass motors in it as they have better availability in the UK

    • @ValleyRC
      @ValleyRC Před 3 lety +2

      I find some budget ESCS really struggle with outrunners. Surpass and GoolRC ones I've tried have resulted in the ESC getting hot and the motor getting boiling hot! This is both with relatively low KV outrunners and high KV helicopter ones too. Maybe because they can't cope with so many poles?
      Then some other ECSs such as a Leopard 60a and a Hobbywing quicrun both ran without any temperature problems at all either in the ESC or motor although not as smooth starting up as some of the better controllers.
      There seems to be a fundamental issue that effects some units though when it comes to temps. Even stuff with a fast outrunner like my Feiyue truck, if I try to use a GoolRC style ESC, the motor will get red hot even driving around a living room. Stock ESC or Leopard with the same motor doesn't have the same problem.
      Castle is probably the best out there for sensorless either with outrunners or inunners. Some Hobbywing units are pretty good too.

    @Just Scalin' -- great videos, thank you! looking for a super-quiet motor - ESC combo for my VS4-10 Pro build, what do you recommend? it's going to be for my 12-year-old son, and he likes high speed on trails, I don't want to build a system that just crawls! Thank you again.

    • @JustScalin
      @JustScalin  Před 2 lety

      For trails I like the Hobbywing stuff, it seems to be better weatherproofed and durable. My go-to would be the Axe 550 3300 which gives plenty of power but really good low-down crawling ability too. I used to run one in a nearly stock TRX4 G500 with quite a large pinion and it'd crack 35+mph easily as well as have great low-down control.
      If you have fitment issues then something a bit more compact with a ton of punch would be the Castle Slate 3800kv paired with a Mamba X. Loads more tun-ability and probably a tiny bit more top-end speed, but more expensive and possibly a little less durable.
      For a 12 year old I'd steer clear of the Holmes Hobbies or 3bros motors, because they are absolutely awesome but don't survive as well if you dunk them in mud or overheat them.
      I beat down on my Axe 3300kv and it's still going strong, although these days does sound a little tired it's still doing great in my trail truck.
