Instead of saying Pokemon is as addictive and makes you feel as good as heroine, before you know it people will be saying heroine is as addictive and makes you feel as good as Pokemon.
Heroin. Heroin is a drug. A heroine is a female hero.
Games music you couldn't stop hearing? For me it was closing my eyes and still seeing the sprites... and dreaming about playing the game.. it wasn't enough to play the game on your console... you had to play it _in your dreams!!!_
I now edit videos in my dreams :(
I love how you acknowledge how EVERYONE mentions the SAME facts almost by protocol and who you break the mold content-wise.
oh I'm playing my gbc right now AND ITS SO WORTH IT
Me too, Link rocks.
Me too
I dont have gbc but me too
@@G_Fantastic I bought mine from ebay
still worth til today! playing my gbc regularly rn. couldnt be happier!
I know it was how you felt at the time, but I feel like I should correct you on something, the GBC's palette wasn't any smaller than that of the Game Gear, in fact it was exponentially bigger! (32,768 colours as opposed to 4096 on the GG) And it could even show almost twice as many colours on-screen! (56 colour slots as opposed to only 32 on the GG, not counting line-interruption tricks)
What the Game Gear has over the GBC is the colour-depth, it can show more colours on a single sprite than the GBC can (the GG can do 16, the GBC can only do 4) so the GBC's graphics were closer to the NES for the most part, but when developers who really understood the system pushed it to its limits you'd get absolutely mind-blowing games like Wacky Races! (No, I'm not kidding)
The Gameboy Color is a great handheld. I wish I had given it more attention when it was current. But the PlayStation and the N64 held my attention much longer. Now I try to pick up GBC games whenever possible.
Why didn't Nintendo call it's first color based sprite handheld the GameJoy instead of Gameboy/girl... why exclude the female half of the population (I wasn't being sarcastic... at this point in my life I truly believe that the original name is sexist and or derogatory) ?! That business aside; the Nintendo Gameboy (or whatever you want to call it) had a huge library of titles that I am still checking out even now in 2022.
I just took a look at the GBC Shantae on Ebay..... there are some going for £300+ with a complete with box and inserts going for £650+
I paid 7 quid for my copy from (before they went under that is) Ninja Games and i have the box, manual and inserts
People are idiots, right?
Some people definitely are
also i seem to be sitting on a small goldmine
Top Hat Gaming Man you ever gonna take a look at gameboy advance sp
Should take advance of that idiocracy and earn some cash.
It's not hard oto actually play the game anyway if you really wanted to. :v
For £300 I expect them to include a willing woman with the deal
For £650 I would insist it was an actual biological woman!!!
I appreciate all the effort you put into filming the backdrops of new locations :) keeps it fresh.
The Gameboy ColoUr. Ah yes. I still have the official(?) launch magazine for it somewhere in the depths of my bedroom.
The lifecycle of the GBA wasn't very long either. Only the DS and the original Gameboy were such juggernauts to survive nearly a decade.
Well that was probably my favorite intro to any gaming channel ever. Well done m8
The translucent purple version of the GameBoy Color was my 1st handheld. I have very fond memories of it and a huge regret for selling it. I'm actually quite serious in trying to track down that exact GameBoy Color, if at all possible. After all, it was the system that I played Pokemon Yellow on so much that I actually corrupted the cartridge... (Then again my using a GameShark probably didn't help matters either, but I didn't know that back then.)
I still have mine and I still play it, a Great little handheld.
I bought mine on ebay
@@mcsqurmy2287 me too, want to update to a backlit screen but they are all sold out.
This episode does a great job of combining all the favourite CZcams gaming show tropes in a very self-aware fashion. Good show!
Dragon Quest is a big reason for the success too.
Every game console is worth playing if you have your favorite games on it.
Also >Hating Ruby and Sapphire.
That's some declaration of war, dear gentelman.
It was only fairly recently that I found out Shantae started out on the Gameboy Color!
I was surprised you didn't mention Metal gear solid (ghost Babel in UK). It was a masterpiece. It took the play style from the original NES games, and combined it with the new features and detailed story that the PS1 games had. It was amazing, and had a massive amount of content for a game boy game.
Top Hat Gaming Man obviously is a man of many talents... ö_ö
Not only he can present stuff in a very appealing way, he can also convert a Game Boy into a fashionably accessoire for his attire. I'm impressed.
I totally would wear Nintendo Game Boy now! (A nice red one, matching my shoes and my dress, yay!)
Who else hears the Jolly Roger Bay music in the background
Me that a classic tune from super Mario 64
The colors and letters represented the initial colors available... So in the UK they should have released one in the coloUr of Ultramarine, Umber, Upsdell Red, or Urobilin.
haha Hersonissos near my hometown. Good god, it's so weird seeing these shots in conjunction with the handheld I first played there on Crete in the 90s. Good job
I spent much of my time in the 90s playing handhelds in Crete too. Which town are you from? My family have property in Malia, I am off there for six weeks this summer.
Irakleio and N.Alikarnassos. Next door ^-^ I *thought* you looked like a cretan!!!!
Cool I am in town July 20th - August 24th. I am not Cretan, but I very much consider it my second home as I have been visiting the island for the duration of my life time. Such a scenically beautiful place.
I loved the warioland games for this
betarage yh
Honestly my Gameboy collection is bigger and better than my Gameboy Color collection. It's easier to find good games for the old Gameboy than it is the GBC. The only games I find are licensed shovelware.
I guess it being around for 2 1/2 years would explain why I only had one game for it, until I got Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages for my birthday not too long ago.
Kyle Dietrich amazon has many of them for cheap like a Dragon Warrior 3 for 20 bucks 🤷🏼♂️
9:00 DRAKE BELL
Sadly the gameboy color was not meant to be the Gameboy's successor at all. They had already developed a portable snes by 1996 , but it was too big , too bulky and ate up batteries far too quickly. This project wasn't canned as it was made into the gameboy advance later on with some modifications of course. But it left Nintendo with a gap so they threw the gameboy color into the market to fill the gap until they could push the Advance out much later on. Oddly enough the gameboy advance was ready by 1999 , but Gameboy color were flying off the shelves all thanks to Pokemon craze. Nintendo saw no need to push the advance out whilst it was selling Gameboy color like hot cakes.
I remember being excited to get a GBC, not so much for the color aspect, but to get a smaller form, and only 2 batteries!
pro tip : you can watch series on flixzone. Been using them for watching lots of of movies these days.
@Manuel Justice definitely, I have been watching on Flixzone for since december myself :)
@Manuel Justice Yea, have been watching on Flixzone for since december myself =)
Flixzone is for fargitz
The Gameboy Color was a fever dream for me. I remember owning one, but I can't for the life of me remember WHY I had one or the games I even had for it. I was more inclined to play things on the Super Gameboy
I just remember Tetris and Mario.
Now I can't stop think of THGM as a child: already bearded and already with a hat^^
I think I did already have a tache when the GBC was released, I would have been 13.
^^ please say you wore a hat, no matter whether it's true ;-)
Skipped out on the colour myself, but I think it's problem was a little like the wii u, in as far as it wasn't different enough to entice a purchase! The advance tho? Now that was awesome!
You're driving me crazy holding that thing near the water
Great vid, new subscriber. Recently bought a GBC for my partner for her birthday. Like the look of a couple of these games for her.
I do relate to the music thing he was talking about with the Pokémon, that’s happened to me at night and it would wake me up, I would just wake up to a loud game sound effect or song and be like slightly scared and worried but also happy because I love the music and it gets me excited to play the game the next day 😂
They actually DID delay the release of the Game Boy Advance due to the unexpected success of the Color - the Advance was ready for release long before it came out!
I Was one of those kids who only got a GBC to play Pokémon games on it but it was a excellent system it was my introduction to handheld gaming and will always hold a special place in my heart thank you GBC for the memories.
Your show kicks ass!!! So much to learn thanks !
that intro just got you a new sub. good work
I felt the exact addiction of hearing sounds of the game while on bed but with the original castlevania on gameboy.
Can confirm. I got a Gameboy Color for Pokemon Red
Love ur channel man
I'm currently having loads of fun playing GBC roms via emulation as my GBC died on me. Still, playing Shantae is fantastic fun as well as Mario Land 2 and the Zelda games in colour is brilliant as well.
Great video 👍
What’s the name of the tune at around 5:30? I’ve heard it before but I can’t think of the name
The word colour/color , both spellings are correct in my country
This was the first ever system i owned, i remember i got the turquoise one for my sisters birthday ahahah
Yeah my original one is Turquoise too, the one featured in the video was Laurens haha
Me 2 got a turquoise one back in '98, still have it in 2017 and hope to use it for years to come.
LOL I felt exactly the same with Pokémon Red as you did with Blue. It's an amazing phenomena no doubt.
Oddly I still have a Pokemon Red cart I borrowed from someone as a kid, you don't happen to live in England do you? :P That would be super odd.
I am happy that I am not the only one who could hear the Pokémon music even after it was turned off. Lol
Funny I couldn’t agree more. I have the Pocket on back order but I just bought a new Game boy shell and modded it with new back lite.
Watara Supervision and Mega Duck (don't remember who made it) handhelds we're sadly not advertised the US of A... at least not were I lived or now live.
I had my Game Boy Color for 3 years, 1999 to 2002, until I was forced to give to my cousin, but I would have kept, along with my Game Boy Advance, and the Game Boy (original). Now I try to pick up any Game Boy and Game Boy Color games as possible. Games were released under two classes of cartridges: Class A, "Dual Mode" cartridges compatible with Game Boy systems which predate the Game Boy Color. They feature the text "Yes" in the column indicating two versions of the game included on the cartridges. The backs of the boxes for such games are labeled "Compatible with Game Boy" and the cartridges of these games are typically molded in black to distinguish them from original Game Boy cartridges. Many of them also have special borders and/or limited color support for the Super Game Boy. Class B cartridges were compatible only with the Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Advance SP and Game Boy Player. They feature the text "No" in the column indicating backward compatibility. Such games typically feature the disclaimers "Only for Game Boy Color" and "Not compatible with other Game Boy systems!" on their box art or sometimes on the cartridge.
You forgot that you are able to go backwards in Super Mario Bros.
i like when he chucked a big stone in the water. i only had a gameboy.
It ran from 98 to 2003 with over 900 games and backward compatible not to mention homebrew . I’ve put a IPs backlight screen in no welding needed with the new ones and a new nes themed shell. Looks the biz now colours so vibrant in the light
It's pretty true, even the NES only did really well cause they could launch their best games; well for the most part...
Getting one in about 1 hour!!!!! I'm so excited :DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
Did you get it?
Tetris DX.
Probably my most favorite game for the GBC.
How come you travel so much ; ?? Love the videos
I remortgaged then travelled the world for a year. This year though I have become a school teacher, so I get 14 weeks off work to travel a year now.
I never knew that the games wouldn't work on old consoles like that.
Remember getting my GBC from Woolworths.
Every shot is so awkward and I love it
Without a doubt my favourite GBC is Metal Gear Solid.
Chris B
Yes same here It just sold me when I realised you could knock on walls to distract enemies.
The only thing that annoyed me was forgetting the numbers to contact the other people and taking forever to find the person who saves your game.
Imo, the best GameBoy Color exclusive is Metal Gear: Ghost Babel
The games i was playing back on the GBC and still are, is all the Pokémon RPG's. Also i love the Zelda games and ofc Tetris.
Playing it right now. So yes
I have a gameboy color but I don't use it because I use my gameboy advance sp to play Original Gameboy and Gameboy Color games. Not to mention if you own the Retron 5 you can also play your GBA/GB/GBC library on it.
I'm American I spell colour correctly. In fact I used to have to ask my parents to call my teacher through middleschool because they were always incorrectly marking spelling errors in my work.
Watching Pokémon Gold bring back good memories...
The GBC came out at a time when I was only a few years into my career and I was focused on it, and kinda stepping away from video games as an "adult", still owning and playing a Ps1 and occasionally a friends N64. I remember a young relative having a GBC and I had owned the Original Gameboy since it had came out. I wasnt really interested in the GBC sadly, I remembered it as a "Pokemon" machine, of which I had no understanding or interest. But thankfully, I got back into Video games around 2004 and worked my way backwards from the GBA, and still find "new" GBC games to play to this day. The fact that they got the performance for games like Warlocked out of that hardware still amazes me. For such a short lived console, it has a rock solid library and thats not even including all of the great original Gameboy games. I do seem to recall it not being backlit was a huge turnoff for me, after having all the years struggling to see my Gameboy. I play the GBC games on my Dsi Xl and 3DsXl now with ease. I have picked up a couple original GBC original consoles, intending to tackle intalling an ips screen at some point so I can play them on the original hardware. I do love the form factor of the GBC even to this day.
I too almost grew out of handheld gaming until Heartgold came out.
i liked your video because you used Mario 64(water) background music - easy vote
Oohh, yes yes thee Pokemon craze yes! I remember it very vividly. One of MY BEST memories of all yes! I had that sound track burned in my,skull as well because I played [Silver] sooo much!
The reason it was spelled the american way: there was no U color. The colors and letters represented the initial colors availible
3 seconds into this video and yeah subscribe. Haha like your style
I never considered the gameboy color a seperate product from the gameboy/pocket, most of the games worked on both systems and it was basically just a stopgap release before the GBA. Honestly, I would have much prefered they had released the backlit gameboy pocket they had in japan rather than add color.
Ben Eklom you couldn't play any gbc games in gb or gbp...what are you talking about?
Fred Lewis actually you can,but only some of them
Fred Lewis unless you are talking about gbc exclusives
The Gameboy Color was also more powerful than the original gameboy and games like Shantae or Oracle of Ages wouldn't have been possible on the Gameboy Pocket. The Gameboy Pocket REALLY doesn't hold up today anyway as the screen that Nintendo used was prone to breaking down rather easily. Over time, the screens fade and you can even end up with a situation where you have permanent vertical lines on the screen. The color is really durable and its screen is very reflective to light making it playable even at sunset. Its a shame that the color is such an underrated system because there were some truly great titles for it. Pokemon G/S/C, Legend of Zelda Oracle of Ages/Seasons, Metal Gear Solid, Monkey Puncher, Wario Land 2/3, Super Mario Deluxe, Shadowgate, Dragon Quest III, Shantae, Mario Tennis, etc.
Prefer the original as it was my first console, and i love collecting for it!!! I won't get a color as i have a backlit GB Boy Color which is great fun to play at night . Looking forward to the Super Retro Boy, looks pretty good!
Always makes me laugh when Brits get on a high horse about pronunciation and spelling, yet then say Marry-Oh instead of Mario! :D
Great video btw!
😂
Dave Moynihan I am Italian. The actual name Mario is pronounced Mawrio. BUT I say Mario because that's how everyone said it and it caught on for me.
Americans saying it like “Marwwwrrrrrrrio” 😂
"Shentai"? Oh my.
lol
9:10.... Yeah, ME!!
If u already have a gameboy laying around or some family member has one, get a flashcart from ali express, backlight or frontlight and enjoy
Can sum it up pretty well
Do you own a GBA? if yes, then you don't need a GBC. If no, by all means buy one
I only very recently found this out, but you can't transfer between the Pokemon Y/B/R games without two GBCs or two original GBs, sad times.
Actually on the original Gameboy Advance, the gameboy color games seemed too dark, even darker than they were on the Gameboy Color. The Gameboy Advance SP is what you need for a good experience of playing Gameboy, Gameboy Color and Gameboy Advance games. It has a really good backlight. However the Gameboy Advance doesn't have an infrared sensor though, its useful in some Gameboy Color games.
Or original GBA with backlight mod.
No
ive just discovered this wonderfull channel, thx random youtube algorythm
I tried red and moon recently, and found that the pokemon battles in red where almost difficult enough, but I got stuck trying to figure out where to go. In moon, I always knew exactly what to do, and the battles where too easy. Maybe I should try the 2nd generation.
My Gameboy Color library consisted of Pokemon, Pokemon, and Pokemon.
Great video! I wonder if they also spelled Colour as Color because they could have each letter be one of the colours of the initial line of GBC systems. That being said though, I'm sure they could've made an orange GBC and had that be the U.
Anyway, my favorite Game Boy Color game would be Dragon Warrior III. It was a great RPG for the system and added even more content on top of what the Super Famicom remake already added four years prior.
I think its cos they'd have to produce another decal
Pokémon Silver, Mario Tennis and Super Mario Bros. Deluxe were all the shit to me.
Especially the first two games thanks to Pokémon Stadium and Mario Tennis 64, using MY characters and monsters were all fun.
I have the kiwi and pink game boy colors. I think their design is Nintendo's handheld's best. Bar maybe the Game Boy Micro, which I also own. Also I love playing gbc games on the original hardware.
I think that Game Boy Color is worth it. I can literally play FOUR versions of my favorite game on it... That makes it worth it for me.
When it was first released, it was pretty cool, but once the GBA came out, it wasn't worth getting. I have one and I do like it, but once I get a GBA, it'll probably just sit on a shelf collecting dust.
That's so true. In my school you weren't allowed to bring these in apart from on one day a year. I had a hand-me-down colour while everybody else had a GBA. I loved it though
I'm surprised you didn't mention bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Pok%C3%A9mon_Yellow_Version It was the pack-in title for the GBC and also full color. It was mostly a colored Red/Blue but with some features unique to it - for example, to this day, it is the only version where Jesse and James actually appear and can be battled.
World is imperfect so a 10/10 more or less makes sense imo, it's an imperfect 10 out of an imperfect 10.
So are any of your fights online?
Yeah should be stuff about, just type in Richard Parliament.
Colour? Color? Who knows? I know.
I loved Mario Golf, the Gameboy line wasn't region locked so I can play Pokemon in French.
I don't really consider the Gameboy Color as it's own seperate system (and neither does Nintendo, the Colors sales are included with the original gameboys), it's more of a DSi or New 3DS. Essentially the same machine, but with boosted clocks and expanded capabilities and a handful of excusive games.
Granted neither the DSi nor the New 3ds ever had their own exclusive Zelda or Pokemon games, but just because it had a more compelling software lineup than either of the other two, that doesn't mean it's a generational jump by comparison.
Combining sales records is not an indication of whether or not one system is a different platform to another. If one system has hundreds of games which are incompatible with the previous platform, then it is a completely different system.
In regards to combining sales figures, it is usually done to make sales look more impressive. The PSP and PS Vita published combined sales too and they are two completely different beasts.
Hey, thanks for taking the time to answer!
With regards to making the sales figures look better- Nintendo doesn't seem to do that, at least not since the WiiU released. They easily could have tried to include it in the Wii sales figures to try and disguise it's abysmal sales (not unlike Microsoft with their xbox one figures, wich aren't even that bad). But no. They faithfully reported their figures every quarter.
Between that and their PR stating that the GB and the GBC are the same generation I think at least Nintendo really does consider them to be the same.
I thought it was wierd at first too but got used to the idea after I found out more about the history of the system and the seemingly troubled development of the GBA.
Basically they had scrap the entire work that had been done on a much more ambitious gameboy successor, because it just wouldn't work and released the color as a stopgap solution until they could come up with a better design.
Doesn't mean that I wasn't furious as a puny ten year old when my new shiny GBC wouldn't play the new Pokemon game (although according to you I seem to have dodged a bullet there) because an even newer and shinier Gameboy had already been released. ;)
Lovely video in any case!
the gameboy color and normal gameboy had a reason for not having a backlit and the reason was mostly do to cost and the fact that most gamer dont play in the dark
I do love all my Nintendo handhelds, but I remember it feeling slightly like a slap in the face when Nintendo came out with the technically inferior gameboy colour way later after the Lynx and the Game Gear. However it shows very clearly that making appealing games usually don't have much to do with technical details.
Hey nice vid, btw Shantae is pronounced shon- tay not Shan Thai :)
just almost bought a SNES and a Genesis from my local shop. couldn't do it. they were well priced. but the games are just so damn expensive now :( fml
Everdrives, man. Well worth the price.
Even in canada just north of the us we use colour because we aren't too lazy to exclude the u
The Gameboy Color came out because R&D for the Gameboy Advance screwed up and they wouldn’t have a new handheld for years so the Gameboy Color was released as an intermediate handheld.
You know what when I first watched this guy I thought a what a rip off of the AVGN but it's NOT ! ! ! This guy is a very good video gamer reviewer he's very thorough and more informative on reviews then AVGN yeah there is less humour in these videos but this guy is more about facts and advise HAT OFF to you Top Hat Gaming Man I was wrong about you I have subscribed to your channel and you will be getting my likes from now on ohh and your English so am I so do us proud with these reviews work hard and be better then AVGN if you put the work in pal 👍
They seriously should have put Shantae on Game Boy Advance. That was a mind boggling business decision to put it on GBC so late in the GBC life span.
