What's your favorite Game Boy Color game? TELL ME RIGHT NOW!!!
Alone in the Dark
Warlocked, Alice in Wonderland, Duke Nukem, Commander Keen (yes, there's Commander Keen on the GBC), Daikatana, and the Shadowgate and Deja Vu ports, as well as the Dragon Warrior I, II and III ports, Project S-11, and also Quest RPG: Brian's Journey (which is downgraded Quest 64)
Ooo color game you say.... Link's awakening DX
ShadowGate & Deja Vu
Pokemon Crystal.
That translucent purple GBC is still one of the best looking consoles after all these years.
The transparent purple Anbernic RG353V looks amazing!
Still got one. So cool you can see it's insides!
Indeed. I still take mine out once in a while just to marvel at its beauty. Pretty funny that the screen lacking light never bugged me that much back then but today it’s a deal breaker. Interesting how things can change with time and perspective.
Playing Links Awakening DX on the Game Boy Color was like playing an all new Zelda game when it came out. The coloring was just gorgeous.
Man gotta tell ya something: your videos are my go to sleep videos. Not because you are boring or because your content is boring. The nostalgia makes me feel like a toddler watching a good old TV show. I love it but I fell sleep because it's so comfy.
Such a wholesome comment. I feel the same way :)

@alvallac2171 Thanks for the correction. English is not my first language .
But I belive this was just my cellphone autocorrecting it for some reason.
Those extra RAMs allow for some very nice character animation. The GBC CPU is also almost twice as fast as regular Gameboy (4.19Mhz vs 8Mhz)
Yeah, I'm not even sure how you can know about the extra RAM and not know the CPU speed.
Sloppy, but otherwise, good to see the system get a long examination for once. Most ignore third party releases.
Hay bro. How many RAMs do you have in your unit?
@@Iliek I have 2 RAMS is that enough or do I need to download more?
GBC has exactly 2x faster CPU (Sharp LR35902 running at 8.38 MHz) and exactly 3x more RAM. 2x faster CPU is like going from Ryzen 1700X (March 2017) to Ryzen 7700X (September 2022). 3x RAM is like going from 8GB to 24GB - more than PS5 or XSX have.
@@juststatedtheobvious9633there’s nothing sloppy about this video. Gamesack focuses on the games, not the specs of the console. Go to another channel if that’s what you’re looking for. Not everyone just cares about graphics & performance like you.

You know I was actually afraid of a negative reaction? Like people would think I was discouraging from watching the whole episode. But like you said, it's nice to have when you go back to rewatch. Have a great weekend.@@sppspharmdude
It's really nice to see what roms Im missing, thanks@@kynmasters8670
The part where you're speaking seriously about the Zelda game and then in the background gameplay everyone happily agrees to name the baby Turd was a nice touch
I think I read they added the extra stuff only for GBA for Wendy and Shantae because the games were so late in the life of the GBC that they had to give an incentive for GBA owners to buy them as well and get decent sales numbers
yep, the Zelda Oracle games could also detect if you were using a GBA and had some bonus stuff
@@Nintenboy01which he showed in the video...
Shantae didn't even sell well in the original run, Bozon said it didn't have a clear fit for a market at the time. For example, boys would consider the game too "girly". So it never gained a lot of appreciation until many years later.
Awesome video!
1:21 small correction: the Game Boy Color did not end up selling close to 120 million units. That number (around 118.7 million) is the combined worldwide sales of Game Boy + Game Boy Color devices.
Many people would agree that 118.7 million is close to 120 million. It’s not that far off.
@@ImOnRandomThat's not what they were making a comment about. Re-read the comment you replied to.
@@sjftech thanks for pointing that out. My mistake.
@@ImOnRandomare you dumb?
I spend too much time watching stuff about video games.. I tickled immediately when Joe mentioned 120 MILLIONS devices for the Game Boy Color alone ..like something immediately seemed off
Your videos are wonderful and I love the cool pixel transitions and angled gameplay bit where the gameboy game changed into colour. I hope more people binge on gamesack, it's a good sunday.
I only just realized now that Elevator Action was released as Dexter's Laboratory in the US. Seeing the original version here really triggered some memories!
Gotta correct you Joe, the Gameboy Color did NOT sell close to 120 million units. If you look carefully that number includes all the Gameboys that can play original games of which the GB Color is the 4th and last version.
Yeah I thought that sounded way too high
Yep Nintendo consider the Color a upgrade like DSi or New 3DS why counted with GameBoy
There's videos about the OG Gameboy that uses the same sale numbers. so yeah, Gameboy is a Gameboy is a Gameboy.
Nintendo wanted to be sure that if they eventually released a handheld system with color, that it has the same battery life as the original Game Boy. Funny how Sega, Atari, & NEC didn't realize how important the issue of battery life is.
Great ep nevertheless.
I don't think it actually was. I think price was. The others with a decent DC adapter would have been fine and more successful if they weren't 2-3x the price of the GB/GBC. Hell the Game Gear even did ok for how smeary the screen was, but nothing like the cheap and replaceable GB
Edit: plus iirc it took Sharp coming to them with a new TFT color display and access to the Zilog-like chip to finally do it. Battery life was another thing since they could have easily justified going back to 3-4 batteries etc to consumers if it had 5hrs instead of 10hrs, or sell inexpensive battery extensions. That price is the end all and difference between selling 10mil and 120mil
I have a Gameboy Color since the 7th grade. Battery life is less than the original gameboy
@@SataniaMcDowel It's also incredibly hard to play indoors without an external light source. I've got a good chunk of the GB revisions, and the GBC is the worst. But, I do give Nintendo credit as at least you were able to get a good external light that plugged into the GB directly. My personal favorite would be the GB Light as it has what appears to be the same technology that Timex introduced with their Indiglo watch dials. A nice consistent bluish-greenish light across the entire display that can be disabled if you have enough light leaving you with just the OG GB dispay.
Nintendo didn't realize how important is a battery life of Wonderswan
@@hi_tech_reptiles why would you want a portable console and use an ac adapter? that defeats the whole purpose...
Small correction, the CPU runs at twice the speed when running GBC games.
I'm impressed with the run animation and general visuals of bionic commando. Some big sprites there.
That Gameboy Color Elevator Action game would be reskinned into a game called "Dexters Lab - Robot Rampage"
That's basically the North American version.
I thought it looked familiar. I played that one all the time but never knew it was a reskin.
Just wanted to point out that for Conker's Pocket Tales, it's compatible with both GB and GBC; but the two versions are completely different! The basic framework of the game is the same but the puzzles, levels, and even how you save the game is different- so much so that if you swap the game between a GBC and a GB, the save files don't even carry over!
Rare used to be so awesome. Soon as they left Nintendo they downed. Same with Konami.
That's awesome, I didn't know that. Actually really damn cool.
@@GameSack it is, to my knowledge, the only game for GBC that comes with two entirely different roms on the same cartridge. It's really neat looking into it!
@@DailyCorvidit’s a little more complicated than that. The making of perfect dark was a tumultuous period and it wound up with the studio fracturing. The heads were done ( which is why they sold), half the devs went and started Free Rasical and made Timesplitters, and the remnant finished perfect dark and then went to MS. So they would have been a shell of their former glory even if they stayed with Nintendo.
@@QuestionBlockGamingSpace Invaders for Game Boy has the SNES Space Invaders when played on a Super Game Boy
(Not the same thing, but somewhat related)
Something you forgot to mention in the hardware overview: There's an additional double CPU speed mode that color games can take advantage of.
I was in the middle of a very interesting video and I interrupted everything to watch gamesack

Thanks Joe for all your hard work.
Amazing after all this time the episodes have been going then you realise the systems that haven’t had the Game Sack treatment yet and immediately makes it must watch 😁
One of my favorite episodes of Game Sack for sure! Thank you so much for making this! :)
Just when I think I've watched every video on CZcams, Game Sack drops a new one and I finally have good content to watch!
You watched ALL 190 million videos did you???
_I mean the good ones!_
You watched ALL 8 videos did you?? ;)
Am really glad they decided to greatly expand the included RAM, as you can really tell that this CPU had a lot of untapped potential that was held back by the lack of RAM on the original Gameboy.
Theres quite a bit more performance being squeezed out of this chip w the extra RAM. The music is also more detailed now as a result 😊
Keep in mind that they did increase the CPU speed for the Game Boy Color. Joe was mistaken on that part of the specs. But your point is still valid as you can see a lot of improvement along with some interesting ideas from those later games. Add to that some really clever developers like Crawfish and Wayforward. The screen is worth mentioning as well. While the small resolution was a big limitation, the GBC's screen handled motion better than the originals and even the Pockets so that also let developers push things further. I never had a GBC, but I remember when it was new and I liked seeing developers do interesting things with it.
@@ravagingwolverine I'd say the GBA is an even more interesting case. Everyone compares it to the SNES but in actuality it was far more powerful than the SNES, and you could clearly see that in some of the 3D titles.
There was some truly impressive games for that little ARM chip. Was just a matter of time before ARM CPU's took over the mobile market.
@@skins4thewin Yeah, the GBA is also interesting in a similar way. I really loved seeing the attempts at 3D games and demakes of console games. I remember Max Payne being really interesting. GBA had a Tomb Raider game that I remember enjoying. And Tekken Advance was surprisingly good, so I heard. When the GBA was current, it was my favorite platform over the consoles of the time. Not only was it more powerful than the SNES, but the games were larger, which helped. But it did lose some of that power advantage, in terms of what was on screen, from having to run the audio in software.
@@ravagingwolverine Totally agree, I spent copious amounts of time playing my GBA, specially once the SP came out & FINALLY got that backlit screen it so desperately needed!
The main thing that made it great was not only the power it had for 2D games, but just the game library in general. It had a TON of truly amazing games for it! The GBA still to this day probably has the best overall game library of any portable!
I’ve only been watching gamesack regularly for a couple of years now but there’s something special about this channel that makes it feel like I’ve been watching them since childhood. Thank you for this channel!
It has the dedication and love only a lifelong fan of video games can bring
Kudos to Joe for slipping that 6 million dollar man reference into today's episode.
Still got my old purple Game Boy Color from 1999, still works too. I got a lot of great memories playing Pokemon Red and Silver, Wario Land 2, Links Awakening DX and all my older Game Boy games on it. The only thing was i never had the rechargeable battery pack for it so i was always looking for batteries to play the bloody thing lol. Great episode :)
One of my favorites from this system was DeJa Vu I and II. Namely because for the longest time it was the best way to get the two most interesting Macventure games.
The Game Boy Color is one of my favorite game ststems ever, there's so much hidden on that platform, especially if you look into imports, unreleased prototypes and even the bootleg scene is amazing.
Can I just say, the way you display the rotating Gameboy screens at the start, with the game slowly coming into view as the light reflects off it, looks absolutely amazing. It really makes me appreciate the beauty of these old systems. Nothing can hold a candle to the original way to play these games imo.
Oh and the rest of the video is cool too. :)
Still coming up with great themes after all this time. Thanks Joe!
Loved the Game Boy Color! It was my first gaming hardware ever, such fond memories! Great video as always! love the angled scan-line shots!
I couldn’t click on this episode fast enough, covering one of my favorite handhelds of all-time! You did a phenomenal job covering this handheld, with so many superb games highlighted. Now, it’s time to fire up some GBC games that I’m in the mood to play after watching this episode.
I appreciate all the hardwork, editing, stop motion, and playing these games that went into making this video! Keep 'em coming
*hard work
A rare treat, a handheld-focused episode! Thanks, sack!
Love a good game sack episode great way to end a Saturday night
The GBC is sorely underrated and always seems to get lost between the original Gameboy and the GBA. Amazing what developers were able to pull off on such modest hardware. I had NO IDEA there were over 900 games for this thing.
Which is pretty crazy when you think about it, they had like what, 2 years between gbc and gba releases? They were practically pumping out games for this thing
This is your best video in a while, so many cool games to check out. More videos like this please.
the best thing about Zelda Oracle of Ages/Seasons is that there's a bit of Crossplay tied to them, what seems like double dipping is more of an interesting idea to get around the limitations.
in any case, the GBC was a decent upgrade from the OG, it was lighter, nicer to look like, and it came in a ton of different colors, allowing your handheld to stand out at school or public hangouts.
oracle of ages/seasons are among the best gbc games glad they got mentioned. nothing the zelda series has done since has felt as interesting and compelling. their worlds are really cool and i wish they had been developed more almost as a spinoff series or something
I've seen a fair amount of sacks in my time, but Joe definitely has the best one around! Sacktastic as always!
Thanks for highlighting the must play GBC games, i was all about PS1 when this came out so I missed out on the Game Boy Color, I did come back for the GBA though and every Nintendo handheld that came after it
Instant classic episode! I hope you can revisit the console again in the future cause GBC games are so nostalgic.
The stop motion animation made this an instant sub for me. Cant wait to see the rest of your videos!
Oh you'll be glad you did.
I just updated my Analogue Pocket with to run all kinds of cores and you upload this video. Absolute god tier timing.
With the explosion of retro handhelds, it's crazy to remember some of us paid $30 for THAT version of Street Fighter Alpha 1, while nowadays, you can get the entire CPS2 AND Neo Geo libraries on the go for nearly the same price. That said, I enjoyed every minute of it (although I can't say I liked the GBC Dpad for fighters!)
Edit: I'm glad you saved Shantae for last. The game looks like it was made on a completely separate, more powerful system. VERY impressive, and an aspect that might be lost if you didn't see the rest of the stuff on the GBC.
A great night tonight when there is a new episode of gamesack!
I remember getting my GBC back in Christmas ‘99. I got the Pokémon Yellow bundle for Christmas, and it came with the Pikachu GBC. I played the heck out of my GBC, and I still have it to this day!
Holy crap that new animation you guys are using looks so cool. Seriously I love that close-up angle it just looks immersive
What a nice surprise to start this new day out. Thank you sir, I was getting really freaking bored and couldn’t pick out a video game to play.
Thank God, what a wonderful day! I've been dying for this episode! Gonna watch this 50+ times
The video didnt even start and it already made my day!Pure love for your sack!
Loved hearing you bring up Power Quest, that game has been a hidden gem in the GBC library for near 2 and a half decades!
The $6M man sound effect is art. Perfect.
Perfect timing on this episode, Joe! I just got an Anbernic RG35XX and needed some help focusing on the best GBC games to try out.
Happy to see some love for Return of the Ninja and Motocross Maniacs 2. Legend of the River King 2 is probably one of my favorite game on the console. Otherwise these titles worth to be played: The Mummy, Woody Woodpecker Racing, Driver, Action Man : Search for Base X, Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue.
I love these console showcase videos. Always find something new to check out.
I didn't even realize that Game Boy Color didn't have an episode yet. Thank you!
The “check points” in Mega Man Xtreme are what made the game possible on the original Game Boy. It was basically away to page out the level data and load new level data since the original Game Boy didn’t have enough RAM otherwise to replicate Mega Man X levels. It’s a technical limitation hidden as a gameplay element.
I believe the Game Boy Color CPU runs as twice the original Game Boy clock speed. Over 8 MHz, not 4 MHz.
THE POWER QUEST MUSIC AT THE START??? fantastic choice, great taste in music! that music still kicks butt! glad im not the only one who played that game, definitely one of my favourite gbc games back in the day!
A great video, love your screen filter here. Hoping for a part two with some shmups.
Great video, not sure why this didn’t pop up in my CZcams feed 12 days ago. I’ve been waiting for the game boy color video forever!
This was a very nice ride down Nostalgia Ave. Thank you!
My favorite Bomberman game on the Color is Pocket Bomberman. Another great ones Wario Land 3, Links Awakening Dx, Harvest Moon 3, Pokémon Puzzle Challenge and Ghosts and Goblins
Joe, I know you aren't even reading this but still thank you for such a cool presentation! No blocky mess, just a beautiful big-ass lcd matrix screen! Game boy never looked better and you're a real shader pro!
I love this episode! Please make more of this amazing console. Could you also make an episode about the rom hacks that add color and new features to the original gameboy games (Super Mario Land 1 & 2, Megaman 5, etc)?
I stay up incredibly late to see what you have in store for us Joe
Woah, that Power Quest music at the start was a surprise nostalgia hit. Loved that game.
14:45 "Ryu Feels empty, and very upset!"
Lol we have all been there Ryu, we have all been there.......
I liked the Mission Impossible game on gbc.
It has some spy gimmick features like using your gba as a tv remote.
The Rayman games on GBC are excellent as well.
Thanks Joe. The captured video looks amazing ! Great job.
I still have my gameboy color and love to play it from time to time. It was such a good system
Crazy to think, it is still the best selling handheld console ever, beating the Switch about 30 times over.
I love the way GBC games look. The graphics have such a cozy feel. Maybe that’s just the screen resolution lol.
Can't say this system was ahead of it's time, but boy did it have some incredible games.
*its time (possessive pronoun)
it's = contraction of "it is" or "it has"
All contractions have apostrophes, but possessive pronouns never do.
So many fun times with my brother and cousins with our GBCs!
So glad yo talked about Oracle of Seasons, it's one of my favorite games ever. Amazing soundtrack.
Well done mate. I don't know how you're able to produce such high quality vids each week! I love that all your gameplay has some kind of filter on it to mimic the GBC screen. Looks great!
Kinda coincidental this pop up while I was watching the OG Game Boy episode from 8 years ago.
I think my most played GBC game is port of "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2". Developers got incredible amount of style and vibe of original areas and mechanics into portable size. Port of first game "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater" also exists but it's bit weirder with topdown perspective instead of sideview used in second one.
I've always thought the Gameboy was a cool system, having the power of the NES in your pocket and whatnot. Top-shelf quality video is always, and still looking forward to hearing the story about how you got that SNES ASCII pad in the intro
I appreciate you using the grid lines like a real GBC!
Elevator Action EX did come out in the US... kinda. Its graphics were altered and it was released as Dexter's Laboratory: Robot Rampage for the American market.
Great video as always, Joe. Thank you for covering my first ever gaming system/handheld! =D
So glad you did this video. Gameboy color really maximized the capabilities of 8 bit gaming.
Love falling asleep to your videos 😊
Power quest was my absolute favorite back in the day. Going to the park to kick some butt… man. Haha good times
That purple translucent GBC was the same I had. I would have been around 10 or 11 when I got it. I remember playing it on trips, in the airport, in the car. Loved it, wish I knew where it's at now.
The GBC is the perfect kind of retro look and feel. There's also a rather active indie game scene releasing games to the system to this day, physical cartridges and all.
Fun fact; if you play Conker's Pocket Tales on the original Game Boy, the level design itself becomes different.
so its one of the few GBC games that will work on the original Gameboy?
oh hey that WAS a fun fact! im gonna look up some comparison videos if those exist :)
That game has two actual roms in the cartridge, one for GBC and one for GB.
There is also an Asteroids game that does something similar, the game will have different graphics if played in a SNES through a Super Game Boy.
@@GeomancerHT that would be Space Invaders
GBC had a weird lifecycle - the og GB had been out forever, GBC comes out in late '98, then bam GBA comes out in early 2001. Weirdest part is Nintendo lumps GBC sales with og GB sales, shrouding how well the product actually did, or didn't.
Oh boy 11PM time for Game Sack
Gameboy Color is one of my favorite systems and imo the best 8 bit machine. It came out when I was 16 so it is extremely memorable for me lol
Fun Fact:
The letters that spell COLOR are colored as the original colors initially released.
C= Berry
O= Grape
L= Kiwi
O= Dandelion
R= Teal
That's how I display mine! 😎👍
Haha the ending could have actually been a 90’s commercial. A lot better than some I have seen.
Can tell this was captured with an Analogue Pocket cause I was just using mine on with Dock on my with that same display mode.
Mickey's Racing Adventure is a blast from the past for me, with an underrated soundtrack done by none other than David Wise.
i anticipated this episode for a long time
thanks for it
Great episode as always but I really liked the skit at the end. Really made me chuckle 😅😊👍
My favorite was Mario Tennis, I remember to play against friends with cable link and we could use the transfer pak to use your player in the N64 version, it was awesome
the nintendo hardware. especially the original GB, was so much behind its competitors but the marketing, the amount of games and the fun factor are still untouchable imo!
