Sony HT-S40R review: A midrange soundbar with a nifty trick up its sleeve

  • On paper, the Sony HT-S40R soundbar looks like a successor to the Sony HT-RT3. Its biggest advantage is the setup for the surround speakers. They connect to a wireless amplifier that connects to the subwoofer wirelessly, eliminating the need to connect the surround speakers physically to the subwoofer as we’ve seen on the Sony HT-S20R and the Sony HT-RT3. While the setup isn't truly wireless, it is very convenient. The overall sound output from the soundbar is very good, considering the price point. It can produce punchy sounds for movies, is good for gaming and music lovers as well. Its build may feel a little plasticky, but it does not look cheap at all. It is convenient and easy to set up and comes with a 6ft HDMI cable in the box for ARC connectivity. While the front channel separation may be a bit weak, the overall surround sound effects are good. If you have a Sony HT-RT3, you don't need to upgrade to this one. However, if you are looking for a good 5.1 soundbar under 30K to bring the theatre home, then you can definitely consider the Sony HT-S40R.

    • @archisdeshmukh6241
      @archisdeshmukh6241 Před 2 lety

      If you are playing normal content then the sound will come from rear speakers also with a good sound separation. Playing 5.1 content will give the effect that u mentioned in your question. But the placement of rear speakers should be correct, then only you will get the correct output and that is there for all the 5.1 channel home theatre system.

    • @Gungrave123
      @Gungrave123 Před rokem

      No, they do not work. Best they can do is duplicate the other speakers at very low volume. Surround? forget it, they cannot recognize any 5.1 input. games or movies.

    • @smuckola
      @smuckola Před rokem +1

      @@Gungrave123 That is not true at all. It depends entirely on the 5.1 input. Even between different 5.1 movies, or different scenes. This thing has no equalizer so that's all in the player app, like in your tv. It will play what it is given.

    • @SubhadeepBhattacharya

      Playing song and watching movie is entirely different because songs don’t have the dolby settings, so when you are playing a song it is coming out of all the speakers as a whole, but movies with 5.1 dolby settings have a 3d imprint of sound, which is dolby all about basically, so if the dialogue is coming from a rear perspective, you will hear it from the rear speakers.

      I've got the same issue and on my LG C1 OLED I'm also having to mix in with the Tv. I thought I had done enough research but it's obvious that most people are happy if the soundbar sounds better than their built in speakers. Personally I could live with it if it had some kind of speaker EQ where you could raise the voices but the presets only do something when it's really loud (& like you said 'too loud') I'm now looking at the LG 75Q which sounded pretty good in the store but it's twice the price and only has 3.1. Either way I'm going to have to resist the urge to boot it square in the stones or ditch this average soundbar.

    • @vatrica1
      @vatrica1 Před rokem

      @@steventspoon7468 yeah it's frustrating, but after some further testing I have realized most of the issue is in the sound source. If the source is stereo, this crap is going on. If it has embedded 5.1 support the sound will be nice. Not spectacular, but nice. I'm lately using stremio app to stream some torrents and I can see if I play some compressed torrent (1-2GB size) the sound is terrible and in the settings you can choose only stereo. If I play some larger file with 265 compression and 5.1 embedded, it works OK... But anyway, I just got used to keep the remote close all the time and adjust accordingly 🤦

      Thank you so much for your comment. In our opinion, the best soundbar is the Samsung Q950A. we have reviewed it as well. The soundbar has very good performance. but it is an expensive soundbar. In India, the Samsung is available for about Rs 75000 to Rs 85000 if you know where to look.

    After watching CZcams reviews I purchased a Sony s40r. When I connect the soundbar with tv via HDMI arc or tv Bluetooth, the sound is very low compared to mobile Bluetooth play, USB direct play with soundbar. It's happened with any percentage volume. I tried PCM on/off, DRC on/off but there is no fix. After that I connected this soundbar with Sony, lg, Samsung tv, there is the same issue. Then I called Sony for service, after that Sony service employee came to my home and said that this soundbar is not capable of producing tv sound louder as compared to mobile Bluetooth play or USB direct play with soundbar. Sony's services are very bad and not acceptable. Don't buy sony s20r or s40r. After all of these things happened I purchased JBL 2.1 deep bass mk2. Now I'm a big fan of JBL's music instruments, sound separation, vocals, bass, sound clarity and loudness.

      @@100janosky_3 Sony s40 work fine with only mobile bt or USB direct play music, not good with tv arc. sony adding artificially over upper bass, which is not good for music instruments sound. Some time it's annoying for adding artificially over upper bass.
      Jbl 2.1 deep bass mk2 = music instruments, sound separation, vocals, tight and thriller bass, sound clarity and loudness. jbl 2.1 deep bass mk2 have 2x1” tweeter which helps for high note sound.
      samsung b650 have Built-In Center Speaker which help for movies dialogue, news, voice Enhanced and samsung have game mode.
      According to me, all rounder is Jbl 2.1 deep bass mk2.

    Stupid design having connections on the sub ... this will limit sub placement and having unsightly cables the main body of the soundbar is always closer to tv ... also aesthetically that sub us horrible looks like sonething from the 1980s minus the retro charm

    Bought Sony HT S40R yesterday ,but i am totally disappointed with it's sound quality specially bass , it's bass sounds boomy , which looks totally fake , as i have Logitech Z906 also , which is 500 WT RMS & Sony HT S40R is 600 WT RMS but i dosen't stand anywhere near to Logitech Z906 specially in bass department , Logitech bass is deep & punchy which hits you harder & also Logitech is way more louder than Sony , will sell sony in couple of months for sure

      Sir, Z906 is Godfather. I have HT RT3 which is the twins of RT40 but I feel the bass is not good enough. I have purchased it in the year 2017 because of managing less wire over IV 300 and regret it :-) Later I purchased JBL Party Box 100 and Obage 2605 to feel the bass for music listening. And surprisingly Obage 2605 is my favorite speaker now for music listening and it has the deepest bass among the three although it doesn't have a surround effect. HT RT3 is only used to feel the room-filling sound effects especially for watching movies.
      So, please don't regret there are many people like you.

      @@HeroVaxThe core reason for 90 % of the buyers to spend this much on a 5.1DD HT system is to watch MOVIES and everything else comes next. My point is this video failed to address that basic need of the majority of the buyers would want to know as it was not reviewed for the primary reason why people would invest in a system that costs 25k.
