People who say that Sultans Of Swings is their best song have never heard Telegraph Road. One of the best songs and performances of all time.

Growing up as a teenager and just getting our drivers licence and cars back in the early 1980's all my friends and I would argue what was the best song, Sultans of Swing or Telegraph Road. They all said Sultans while i was the lone Telegraph Road fan, until they saw this and then they all agreed this just beat Sultans.

Alan Clarke was the guy at the keyboards. He went on to be Tina Turners Musical Director.

Great reaction to an amazing performance
It was filmed in July1983, in London at Hammersmith Odeon
I know this because I was there, I was just 18 and thought this sort of performance was normal!
    Take a bow Dire Straits:
    Mark Knopfler - guitar, vocals
    Alan Clark - keyboards
John Illsley - bass guitar, backing vocals
Hal Lindes - guitar, backing vocals
    Terry Williams - drums
    Additional musicians
    Tommy Mandel - keyboard
They were all superb, but Terry Williams on the drums absolutely smashed it!
This was the encore, what a finish!

I was there too, I was 20. But I first heard Straits when their first eponymous album came out in 1978, I think it was. There was a local record shop in St Albans called Kithaeron, and I spent much of my paper round money there, so the owner knew me well. One day in 1978. I walked in and he said, "Al, just listen to this!" I put the headphones on as he played Down To The Waterline, I had never heard anything like it. When I heard they would actually be playing in St Albans, I hoarded my paper round money to get a ticket. I was hooked ever after. At the age of 60, I have seen them more times than I can remember, rather like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Yes, Dio (RIP)😢 and Pink Floyd'
I think Telegraph Road is my favourite DS track, though I think the second live version of Sultans gets close. I also really like Where Do You Think You're Going?, Skate Away, It Never Rains and Tunnel Of Love. But I don't know a Straits track that I won't listen to.
