Telegraph Road is one of the greatest songs ever written.
Alchemy is one of, if not the best live album ever recorded.
No overdubs, no cheats, just one of the best live bands ever captured in full flight.

The thing people don't know about Mark Knopfler is that he used to be a journalist working for an English tabloid newspaper. Who, when his boss came in asking him in a derogatory way to go write a story about this guitarist that died in Amsterdam (Jimi Hendrix of course,) literally told his boss the bad ass word "you can take this job and shove it." That day he decided to go pro in music. So he basically 'is' a writer, which is why you should always listen to his lyrics just as much as his guitar.

It's such fun to watch somebody reacting to this song! At first they feel, "Ah, this is gentle and so very pleasant..." and then comes that dizzying realization that it's just building up and up and up and up... but so earnestly and beautifully. It was fab watching your amazement! Thanks.

Everyone knows how fluent Mark is with a guitar, but I believe he is a much underappreciated lyricist. He speaks to the
American myths as well as truths. He makes my heart break and then resurrects it!

No-one else than Knopfler could possibly play that solo and make it sound like that. The man is a genius and this is a great song, not their best, that's Brothers in Arms which is one of the finest and most emotive songs ever written. There can be no denying though this is one of the best live albums ever made.

    Brilliant!
I like your genuine reaction and affinity with the music.
Alan Clark on Keyboards was sublime, as were Mark and Hal on guitar, John on the bass was having great day and Terry Williams on the drums smashed it out of the park!
The song is the story of Henry Ford and Detroit,
I as I said in the reaction to "Sultans", I was there back in 1983, when I had long hair! We didn't think they'd be able to play this song live, its so complicated!
It was the encore and I think we just bounced up and down with our mouths open, it was better than the studio version!
The world needs talent like Dire Straights
