Bruce Springsteen said “so I got this guitar and I learned how to make it talk.” No-one makes his guitar talk like Mark Knopfler. No-one. Alive or dead. I’ve listened to this since I was 14. I’m 50 now. My favourite live album ever.
Agreed. Something very special. A master of his craft.
Quite a myopic vision of the music world. I agree that looking at Mark's catalog that he is the best, but there are dozens of guitarists out there that are near-peer quality. The whole "this band, this artist is the greatest by a million miles" is just so tiresome, even more so than the entirety of the "underrated" crowd. If you can't even include David Gilmore in the conversation, then bleh...
@@Wolverines77 not being literal! Just referring to that particular expression “make it talk”. It doesn’t mean all other guitarists are lesser somehow. Well that’s not what I meant anyway.
Incredible. Mark reaches my soul- like no other musician.
@@DEAJP10 it's the cry of the guitar. to good man
Love Dire Straits. They are a great British rock band from the 70's-90's. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists around. They have had so many hits including "Sultans Of Swing", "Romeo & Juliet", "Private Investigations", "Twisting By The Pool", "Money For Nothing", "Walk Of Life", "Telegraph Road", "So Far Away", "Brothers In Arms" etc. They don't have a bad song.
Absolutely wow!!! I didn't know I was a Dire Straits fan, but I am!!
You wanna know who MK is ? So Phil Collins played the drums for him, Eric Clapton was bassist, and sting himself sang chorus for him , David Gilmore said he was most impressed by him , and yet MK refused the induction into the rock and roll hall of fame while his band mates couldn't resist it! MK is performing a message through his God given talent !
When you're sad that it ended so soon, then realize it was 14 min long...
Definitely one of the best live tracks ever. A rare live recording that's miles away better than the studio version.
The final solo of this song is my happy place. I get why some people prefer the sultans performance from this same concert, but this version of Telegraph Rd is probably my single favorite track of all time. Give me one song for the rest of my life and this will be it.
In 1983, a music magazine said "these are our era's new classical musicians."
My favorite version of my favorite Dire Straits song.
@@RideAcrossTheRiver I put these guys and Rush together in my head as the best musically technical/classical rock bands of all time.
I've been listening to this version for almost 20 years. And i want to be played on my funerals. (i'm just thirty. But fell in this band since ten)
@@Jimbodisfansame here, 40 years of refusing to listen to the live version because I preferred studio versions but since I finally gave in and watched this concert this is my number 1 happy feel good song I listen to several times a day. Can't be feeling down listening to this masterpiece.
LEGENDARY INDEED!
Mark once said, " sometimes when the lyrics are done, the music isn't " PRIME EXAMPLE! One of the greatest "outtrows" ever penned!🤣
Huge Dire Straits fan here!!! Mark Knopfler is a great guitar player, songwriter as well. No bad song. Lady Writer, Roméo and Juliet, Sultan of swing. Twisting by the pool, walk of life, Brothers in arms ecc
twisting by the pool not a personal favourite but the rest are awsome
Lady writer is a great song. So is solid rock. Mark knopfler wrote so many catchy songs. I flogged my alchemy lp to death when I was a teenager.
One bad song...Les Boys. Everything else...perfection.
heard some solos of "tunnel of love" it's just amazing song too. Telegraph road is a great performance tune, I'm so happy to see young ppl discovering this gem
@@paullohrisch257 You're not alone :-) Alchemy was my first introduction to Dire Straits, at 17 or 18. A very good friend of mine introduced it to me on an afternoon, I clearly remember biking home, completely blown away. My life literally changed at that time, I had no idea stuff like that existed. Sounds cliché, but it did. Been a Knopfler fan ever since, and will be forever.
Alan Clark on keys.
Now you have to watch Sultans of Swing from the same show, brilliant.
Pure true musicians
It may be apocryphal, but apparently a journalist once asked Prince what it was like to be the best living guitarist? His reply ‘I don’t know, ask Mark Knopfler’. 😀
i heard this in my teens....i sat with my mouth open on the floor...music changed for me that day....forever
Always liked Dire Straits, but now I'm older just I appreciate how brilliant they are. Not one bad song.
The most expressive piano solo of any rock recording I have ever heard.
Alchemy live for me the greatest live album ever, the amazing thing about Alchemy is there is no overdubs, it was just recorded mistakes and all and released
Totally agree! Alchemy is the best Live album ever made in the history of mankind.
@@Michiel1972 it's incredible and doesn't get the credit it deserves
Agreed. And Terry Williams was on fire that night
Wish they officially released live wembley arena 85 the concert recorded for the Tube channel 4
@@gregw6748 I am not a drum aficionado but in my 68 years in London, Terry Williams gave the greatest drumming performances on Sultans and other songs that night, that I have ever seen😇
Just another reminder of how lucky I was to see these guys live many times. Amazing musicians.
you lucky bastard you...
Your appreciation for one of my favorite bands is a joy to watch. Thank you.
Yessss. Alchemy LIVE for the guitar solos!! .... 'The way he started playing the guitar, started playing the piano' - oh boy just you wait for it! This song is the whole road trip. The ivories. Needs no words. Now how many times did you relisten already today?? It gets better every time especially with familiarization when you can linger with it and enjoy each part. Best concert ever. Try all their songs again and some you haven't yet.
This and PULSE=Pink Floyd must be the 2 greatest Live Concerts, surely.
I attended the Alchemy concert in Seattle...epic.
Tightest live band ever! Not only is Mark Knopfler the GOAT of guitarists, the drummer and pianist are phenomenal.
czcams.com/video/6pR1cVgk7Is/video.html
No lyrics, enjoy.
And the bassist ( John )
Awesome ADogg, finally someone reacting to my fav. song by them. Your the man....not many reactors do this song but you did and that speaks volumes about your channel...Keep going man...love it.
Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitar players ever.
I love watching you listening to incredible musicians playing so well to an amazing composers work. MK is a modern day classical composer and poet.
I have no idea what it is, but those Dire Straits ballads always make me ter up like crazy T_T
This one, Romeo and Juliet, Tunnel of love, Brothers in arms... it's a mix of nostalgia, emotional song, Knopfler's voice and something I can't pinpoint. Just beautiful
Growing up in a household that was heavy into classical music discovering Dire straits In the 1980s was a revelation. her was one of very few bands that wanted their music to be so much more than the usual 3minute love ballad or 3minute feel good song based on one short theme played over and over again in the same pace, same key and no dynamics what so ever. Although belonging to a different age I find many of the same qualities in Mark Knopfler's music as I find with Beethoven. Despite being complex music every note is so thought trough that nothing is redundant. On the contrary they are needed to express the powerful yet subtle subtle emotions in the music.
Loving it, Dire Straits Tunnel of love live at Wembley next please 👍
What Dan said 👆👆👆
Yesssss!
An ultimate band…playin an ultimate song…with ultimate ability….sheer perfection
Este track en especial es un viaje que te lleva arriba y abajo, increíble
You've got the right word for this song and this performance'--EPIC. You're obviously digging it all the way through, and have a good feeling for how incredible this song is in live performance. It moves through several phases from slow and mellow to full-force rocking out with that Mark Knopfler guitar work tying it all together with his masterful playing. Wow. Most longer songs done live with a lot of instrumental breaks are excessive and get repetitive. This one goes through so many changes up and down that it holds interest all the way through and ends with a rousing finale. The whole band is great, energetic, but Knopfler's guitar is out of this world.
Dire Straits take you on journeys with their songs, the finesse and musicianship is always a delight. Great reaction, mate!
One of the best live performances, ever! I've been waiting for a a reactor to show this video.
**Goosebumps**
Mark Knopfler is both a masterful guitar player and a brilliant lyricist. His ttechnique is so evocative and emotional it is just crazy.
So glad you did this! Private Investigations is another must-see from this album. It was also a number one single in the UK. Which seems really unlikely but it happened!
Love Over Gold
Tunnel of Love, Skateaway.... Beautiful stuff in that era
Proper musicians. They are just free-styling around the structure of the song. Every version of this I’ve ever heard, either of the era or later, they play it differently.
Now You're definitely infected with the Knopfler Virus, You're without any doubt a Dire Straits fan now. Congrats!
If You now watch Sultans of Swing again (this was Your very first Dire Straits Song, right?) You'll see/hear/feel it very different than the first time. Promised: it will totally flash You again! I think the live performance of Sultans of Swing (Alchemy live Tour) is a tiny bit better than this one, but both are very outstanding songs.
They are a band of musicians, they play live even better than in Studio.
Just turned 59, and have been a fan since the first album, in 1978.
Mark is one of a kind.
Man i'm one of the lucky ones, who have the pleasure, of the great music from the '70ties, and onwards!
Absolute perfection.
Long time ago,
Came a man on a track,
Walking 30 miles with a sack on his back.
He put down his load where he thought it was best,
And made a home in the wilderness.
NOT just the playing, the words too are fine .
This song made me reach an alternate reality years ago. Lay down, put it on excellent stereo and enjoy the ride.
When Alan Clark comes in with the evil electric keys lick at the end ... it's a warning. Also, the song ends with two mushroom clouds.
Inspired by Telegraph Road in Detroit, MI.
This one was at Wembley in the UK
I went to the Feyenoord stadium in Rotterdam. And it was all you think and expected but more. Definately one of the highlights of my life.
Greetz from The Netherlands
Hi from the UK.
I've loved Dire Straits from the very start. My favourite Dire Straits/Mark Knopfler track. He has an art of painting a picture and telling a story with his songs. Romeo and Juliet, Tunnel of Love, Lady Writer, amazing just amazing.
Seen Mark several times in concert, every time he's performed Telegraph Road in full. So I assume it must be one of his favourites to.
Listen to the studio version on the album Love Over Gold, personally I prefer it to the live version.
Glad you liked enjoyed and appreciated it.
Greatest band in the world. Did ya know, mark never uses a pick ?! Great reaction buddy 👊
Welcome to what I grew up on! We had the best era for live music and proper musicians.. he is a legend. And the pianist is elite (and I am one!). The album this is on is Love Over Gold. 5 tracks. Like this.
Check out Private Investigations - same concert. X
One of my favorites!! Their instrumental song The Long Road is one you should check out. Legendary!!!!!!
A great story teller and one of the outstanding guitar players . Been listening to him since about 1978. Said has never played something the same way twice and is still playing 50 + years on .
See these guys are underrated….so subtle
Real artistry!! Just a beautiful performance!!
My favourite Direstraits song. Since I was a little kid. 👍
Same here.
Try doing a stationery bike work-out to this song. By the time you get to the end of the song, you're flying and soaring in the air like a jet taking off on the runway. That is, if you make it that far, because MK is MERCILESS! Love your channel. A newbie.
I’ve been a Straits fan for over 30 years…There is nothing more heart warming than watching a new generation of music lovers discovering Dire Straits all these years later…
May I suggest some of my favourites to react to which I think you will like.
1, “Brothers in arms” (studio track from the brothers in arms album)
czcams.com/video/jhdFe3evXpk/video.html
2, “private investigations” from Alchemy Live
czcams.com/video/jAvrNw5sFwc/video.html
3, “What it is” This is from marks solo album “sailing to Philadelphia”
czcams.com/video/jGmtonlys5A/video.html
keep up the great reactions!
God I wish I was back in the 80's...good times
Mark Knopfler, my favourite guitarist- and probably tied with Jeff Beck for best *living* player- backed up by superb keyboards (the brilliant Alan Clark), smashing drums of ex- Dave Edmunds/ Rockpile's Terry Williams, minimal-but-perfect bass of John Illsley, and Hal Lindes rhythm guitar. I did see them live (SRV was the opening act!)... and the 'funnest' song was 'Private Investigations', but has to be Live. Finger pickers, as opposed to pick or plectrum users, are a special breed- led by Mark and Jeff, Lindsay and Derek. Good eyes and ears, Adogg- you registered that perfectly. Peace.
Tommy Emmanuel says hi! ;-)
@@devilsadvocate2548 Actually he said "G' day, mate." Hey, man- I adore Tommy (he- like Mark Knopfler- was on the old Chet Atkins TV show). But I've only ever seen him play with a thumb- pick, like Chet did. My criterion for the comment was fingers only. But I have ONLY respect for Tommy AND those who appreciate him, Peace.
@@27thangel23 thanks for the clarification as in your original comment you only mentioned 'player' with no reference at all that you were talking about finger pickers only and not even hybrid pickers like TE.
This song is pure genius bro...a classic from one of the best of all time.
Have you ever sat in your car, laid the seat back and close your eyes, and jammed a song for 14 minutes?
If not, this is a great song to do that with. 😏
Huge DS fan. Every song is totally different. Never stuck in a rut. Always quality. All are accomplished musicians. "Brothers in Arms" is in my top ten of all time. And if you want to learn guitar, do it...but you need dedication, dedication, dedication.
You like the piano, guitar playing, don’t forget brilliant bass playing, and one of the best rock drummer in the business, Dir3 Straits were the greatest rock and roll orchestra
Telegraph Road, the song, is the history of Highway US 24 - Telegraph Road that runs 80 miles north and south along the edge of Detroit, Mi. I have traveled it many times. Traffic is always congested. When it rains, it floods. The lyrics in this song are so spot on.
Fantastic song and best live version ever!
"You're latest trick" is a belter as well. No one ever reacts to that for some reason
EPIC and Legendary ! Mark is one of the Greatest guitar players of all tiem. That live they made, was one of the Best of all time easily ! and all the instruments and Band shined and just played perfectly together.
"Tunnel Of Love" and "Telegraph Road" are Dire Straits' masterpieces IMO. Also check out "Expresso Love."
My grandparents lived at Plymouth and Telegraph for 60 years. Redford Twp., MI. What memories this song brought back... Thank you so much.
Love love love Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits, 1 of my fav song of his, esp love their 1st Album, never tire of listening, appreciating this artist, 40 sum years later and this awoken parts of my memories as a teen back then. Thank u 4 sharing. Ireland has wicked talent.
Alchemy is epic. Last song is going home. First time I heard it from the LP I thought my amp broke, it started to hum....But it wasn't my amp, it was Knopflers guitar amp that thought the show was over 😛.
I’ve been a Dire Straits fan for a long time and the Alchemy performances of “Telegraph Road” and “Tunnel of Love” are my enduring favorites.
Having said that, it really is a joy to watch people younger than me listen and appreciate this timeless music.
Great commentary; thanks very much for sharing your thoughts!
great reaction, i suggest calling elvis 1992 live basel, private investigation live 1985 wembley london, tunnel of love 1985 wembley, ,money for nothing, live at knebworth. all of these versions are amazing
Thanks for finally getting to my favorite group since 1981!!
I wore out my CD playing this, figuratively speaking.
Thank you for introducing me to this song. Classic!
Big respect to you reacting to this. Adogg you've got another sub off of it here. One love from the UK
Check out Dire Straits Tunnel of Love. its about an amusement park called Spanish City that used to be a popular place not far from where I live. it closed down ,many years ago. It was a place that Mark Knopfler would go to as a teenager and hang out. Its a great song.
The guitar that Knopfler uses in Telegraph Road and Tunnel of Love is a Schecter Strat named Dream Machine 😍😍
Alchemy is the best album of history music rock and Telegraph road live is the best of music forever..thank Mark.
40 years that I listen to this piece as if it were the first time.
Love this song. Such powerful lyrics, and the music was phenomenal.
For a spell, Knopfler had an uncanny ability to play the right thing at the right time. It feels like he's channeling a higher power, it's such a powerful emotional effect on the listener, if they're 'on the same frequency'.
Meeting of souls. That's why I was hipnotized by this band in my teens. From Brazil!!
I really love watching your reaction to one of the greatest bands EVER !
Man, I love it when I see a reactor, realising that 'we were just messing with you lad.... We're just getting going' ... Let's GO bro 😉
You still need to see Sultans of Swing from the same concert. Levels above this great performance of Telegraph Road and will blow you away. I'll send you the money to play it, I am a new subscriber and think you are a bloody good guy from all the videos of yours that I have watched. More genuine than most reactors on here.
Brothers in Arms is a masterpiece.
Thank you Thank you! Reliving my younger years (70) watching you reaction to one of my all time favorite groups. Fleetwood Mac also. And I love you enjoying this music with me, your reaction to future music is waited upon!
for me, this is the best reaction you have done yet, fantastic friend
Yes 👏 awesome bruh … I still have my first LP of this album 💿 gosh well over 30 years old still in excellent condition…. So happy your on the Dire Straits wagon …. You rock
That guitar he is playing was made for playing Hawaiian music in the 1930s, very iconic and it is a historical instrument, even before he owned it, what it would be worth now is unbelievable especially with it being on the cover of the brothers in arms album
"Running every red light on memory lane" is one of my favourite lines of all time. If you think this is good, which it is, try Sultans of Swing.
Thanks for reacting to this version man, love it!
Without doubt “Alchemy” is the greatest live album ever produced
Loved the moment the guitar Twisted You Up Inside... fellow guitarists can spot it a mile off..I'm pleased for you bruh..you have it inside you so go n buy one n learn 6 hand shapes n you ll be able to play most things in a fashion, good luck..
I love how much you enjoyed that!
Dire Straits are fantastic. Do give a look to Lady Writer or any of the Brothers in Arms album.
Loving it
Knopfler has a significant solo career as well. Check out the album Sailing to Philadelphia
Just a rifi c ulously amazing BAND live. The story telling accentuated by the intrumentstion in thisbluve tune is masterful
I am so glad that you went here. Are there any of these songs that made you grab a friend and tell 'em, you got to hear this?
So much fun watching you react to this epic song and take that journey with you. 🙂
What A Great Reaction to a legendary Group and a wonderful song. BRAVO,My Friend...😇
The confidence on the stage... very nice
You should check out Mark Knopfler's solo albums. He's the voice of Dire Straits
This is awesome such great musicians
Great enthusiasm, brother. Good Ch.
