- MKT Extra 197 grinds east past Leffingwell Ave. in Kirkwood, Mo. The date is 8-21-1988, and this is the Final MKT Train to pass Kirkwood. On 8-22-2010, the Katy was no longer an independent railroad, but a ward of the Union Pacific. The Katy lasted as a UP subisidary until December 1st, 1989, when it was formaly merged into the Union Pacific Railroad.

sweet video jim, I prefer that paint scheme on the MKT
Long live The Katy. Great footage by George Redmond, and thank you Jim for uploading it. :)
love that katy
RIP MKT.. Atleast the old line in Houston makes for a good bike trail and the most epic railfan spot in all of Houston in downtown
Thanks for posting the video. I remember the last train in Mokane. It was a work train and stayed here several days. They moved it out just before the flood of 86 hit and washed out all the new railroad ties they had put in several months earlier. I never understood why they rebuilt the track and then announced that the line was closing. I miss the KATY. I'm glad they kept the corridor open with the KATY trail but unless the state blacktops the trail we will not get the bike traffic they promise
GP40 197 purchased in Red since the late 60's before getting The John Deere inspired scheme.
Awesome! long live the Katy.
THEIR ARE A FEW MKT RAIL CARS STILL AROUND
Are there any videos of the MKT on its original Missouri mainline?
@BNSF2184 yes I agree, to bad 1988 isn't in this color
awesome!
Those were the glory days of train watching...diversity..katy forever
Good video.
@LordoftheKaty Yes, Its the Union Pacific Jefferson City Sub.
I bet the UP crews didn’t have any kind words to say about all the non-dynamic engines they got from the MKT!
Nice! Are there any MKT locos in this color scheme left?
i saw a few after the UP takeover running on various MP lines.
they did not last long.
to answer your question,,,,,,, long gone.
The trail users don't like what the limestone dust from the gravel does to their expensive bikes. Some of those folks who made a killing on wall street should get together and donate the money. In return the state could name sections of the trail after them. It would give local businesses a bit of a boost . The sections that wash out the most could remain gravel. I wish I had the money to do it because that is the only way it will ever get done.
Do you why thier Abandoned its mainline
Flooding and the UP diverted traffic onto the ex Mopac lines.
@dumbasscracker The now abandoned Carondolet Subdivision
The 80’s were awesome, unless you were a railroad.
No up si a mkt
