  • Heres a Train with TWO Rare items.
Leading Train #53 is CSXT GP40-2 6390 (Ex-Georgia Railway 756) with Chessie and Seaboard System units trailing. The only notable locomotive in this Lashup is the Trailing locomotive, CSXT 3004, a very rare GE BQ23-7. The 3004 is former SCL 5136, and is 1 of 10 ever built. The 3004 had its cab blanked and became CSX 3004B, and was ultimatly retired in December, 1997. It is presumed Scrapped.

Nice grab on that oddball BQ23. Only caught two of those, and one of them had already been plated over into a B unit.

Yes, the BQ's were scrapped at Progress Rail in Albertville, AL in the late 1990s.

Love the BQ23-7 at the end. We would have one that would work the Myrtle Beach SC SCL branch from Chadbourn NC.

@ROCKDOG5732 It wasn't really experimental, it was designed to eliminate the caboose and carry the 5 crew members that SCL trains had at the time these engines were ordered. In later years however, the 5 man crew was eventually eliminated and the use of these engines fell out of favor. But, I can see how this is an ancestor to current GE widecabs.

Awesome. I just discovered your channel. Nice to see the former L&N still in use with its block signals. It wouldn't be long before they chopped off the west end and made it a long branch. I wonder if there is still an operator at the diamonds? Amazing UP has not killed that job.

It would be awesome to see at least one of Seaboard Coast Lines' BQ23-7 at a railroad museum in the south, but I think all of them have been scrapped though sadly.

They all have been, and I can't blame CSX for doing it honestly. While the B23-7 was a good locomotive, this cab was not. In the event of a front-end collision, the crew was afforded no protection what so ever. CSX quickly relegated them to trail only status and went so far as to remove the controls and cover the windows to prevent them leading.

@dutchtrainmanserie22 I wonder if the operator caught it? There was (and still is I think) an MP operator at the SOU-MP crossing but he could also see the L&N main if I remember. It has been a long time since I was in Mount Vernon.
