Retraining a Very Hard Mouthed Horse - Danny the Cob

  • This week's Friday Film stars Danny again.
You've seen some of the work we did with him in company with Cloud ridden past, but here's some of him out on the road being driven alone.
Barry talks about Danny's history, some of what we've done with him and of course asks the question: "How does he know it's a driving bit?"
Notice some of the clips - Danny isn't wearing a bit at all with us!

I too am from the states and agree with you completely that this man's work is absolutely beautiful. It also proves a giant point of discussion; we do not need heavy tack and strong arms!! Amen to precise focus accompained by respect and kindess with "consistency" so they understand what is being asked. Keep it simple and easy and they will comply. Such a breath of fresh air to see this man's work in action. My own boy had lots of liberty with me then a dream under saddle bitless, he'd stop on a dime and agile as a gumby but boy did I get eye rolls for being too patient and kind and refusing the traditional bs. The US is so far behind the rest of the world with horses it is quite sad and for me personally very frustrating. When my boy passed away, one friend said, "you did it, you proved them all wrong" I shot back, "No my horse did, I just held the door open for him". ❤

I have to say... I've worked w horses professionally for over 25 yrs now and been a horse owner for over 13. I drove carriages downtown where i live (population about 1 mil) and I rarely find folks that truly fix my problems. It isn't the horse after all. And your tone, ques, gentle nature and calming effects are exactly an example of what I'm missing. I notice the horses language and feelings and I feel like a confident equestrian. But you've reminded me that we're always learning. ❤ I love watching videos like that so thank you.

I'm so glad that Danny 🐴 is with Barry - he seems like a nice boy but needs work. Love the soft words of praise - I believe that animals understand the tone of voice 🥰 And I so appreciate the rubber bits instead of the hard bits!

In Calif US in the 70s you could go to a stable and rent a horse for a hour. After 45 minutes of riding the horse somehow was able to move the bit to the side of his mouth and bit down hard on it. He decided he wanted to go back to the stables. I couldn't control him at all, as he was running back to the stables there was a tree with a big limb he decided he wanted to run under that tree limb. It was either fall off the horse or hit that tree limb. It was pretty funny I was laying on the ground and there I was watching this horse runing to the stables without me.🤣 That horse knew exactly what he was doing I sure didn't. Luckily I was only around 15 so falling off a running horse was no big deal I brushed myself off and walked back to the stables. Horses are incredibly smart.😅
So glade you are doing videos to educate people thank you!

Poor little dude, you’ve done wonders with him. I’ve horrified a few people with hard mouthed horses like him by taking the bridle off and riding in a head collar. Thought that if they were fighting the metal like that it was pointless for me to keep the fight going. I’m still here to tell the tale 😂
Ps I have exactly the same feeling as you about bits…

Barry, you don’t have to apologize for making a point. By the way I happen to agree with you! I am not a horse owner but I love them all the same. I have never agreed with the metal bit, thank god someone thought to make a soft bit if a bit is needed at all.
I’ve seen heavy draft horses do their work with no problem without any bit in their mouths, just a halter with a thicker nose band. If you train them gently and patiently and learn how they are, there will be trust and mutual respect and they will do what you ask them to do without any issues.
Love respect and patience is the way to train any living creature human or animal.
I love your videos, especially the video of lulu, she was an interesting little lady. She turned out to be a lovely little girl after some patience and showing her that the world wasn’t going to hurt her.
Belated Happy Birthday and I hope you and your family had a peaceful and blessed Easter weekend ❤🇨🇦

I love your attitude to horses. I find some of these bits really disturbing. I remember at the Tokyo Olympics, when that Modern Triathlon horse supposedly "went mad", and it was obvious to anyone who knows anything about horses that he was in pain and panicking.
Like you say, they'll do anything for just a bit of love and care, and the way we've treated them over the years is just not right.

Thank you for an interesting lesson, which would be much poorer without the Rambling. Nothing wrong with expressing sympathy & anger for Danny's previous treatment!
A question, please: in the opening sequences of this, Danny appeared to be in a bitless bridle, but the ride had him in your usual rubber bit. Was the bitless not a success, or do you just not like using them? By the way, I just love the sweet-talking to your baby boy, etc. I know its all about the tone of voice rather than the words, and what matters is that its reassuring to them. Its years since i had anything to do with horses, and i thoroughly enjoy your channel.

      @barryhook2  Před 3 měsíci +3

      Glad you enjoyed the rambling!
We did both bitless and bitted work with Danny. He was to be driven in a bit at home and so must be comfortable to wear one without instantly reverting to his old ways. We tried him bitless to 'snap him out' of the instant response to pull against anything put into his mouth and then transitioned him to be safe and happy with or without.
