- a sweet reunion will be had above with the two of you. That kind of friendship endures. Thank you for sharing that piece of your heart.
How wonderful that he learned his own language so that he can be an assistant teacher. Roly must have been such a help in so many ways. Wouldn't it have been nice to sit down with him and record his thoughts about driving and teaching driving? It would have been wisdom straight from the wise horse's mouth.
The world is moving at hyper speed and is a bit crazy. When I watch your videos and see how much you love your job and the horses it makes things right with the world again. Thanks for sharing.
And to wish we could go back sometimes to a simpler time. A time when people talked to each other, people spent time visiting, writing letters, sending cards. When there wasn’t 500 different deodorant, or shampoo or lotion choices. It is nuts. Everyone is so caught up in doing their thing - nobody takes time to just sit or to just sit with each other and talk face to face from topic to topic. If we could keep the technology but dial back to people. And in some ways, technology hasn’t helped us - we are still wasting paper, gas, food. The divide between the rich and poor gets worse and less people care about others - it is getting “me” oriented. Education and healthcare outcomes continue to decrease - and I’m talking about the US. Sad.
very sorry for your loss, RIP Roly
We have had two horses very like roly similar breeding irish draught x connemara they were strong , brave , kind , gentle noble horses miss them
Thank you Barry,.Loved Roly .R.I.P..🌿🌹🌷🌼

What a lovely old fella Roly is! He is a real credit to you, Barry, and there is no doubt that he is very fond of you!
wow incredible bond, really lovely to see :)
I remember Rolo candy from the 80's in the States where I grew up! I really miss Roly. I love watching him driving with other horses because I see what Barry is talking about. Roly trains the other horse!
Mancheeze The Great you can still buy them here in Canada
To see such trust, love and understanding between the two of you is so beautiful. He knows you will always do him right. That horse loves being near you. What a good friend to have.

Beautiful! The sound of your voice, calm, low and sweet is so lovely, no wonder he loves to be near you... I wish everyone would relate to these magnificent creatures in such a way....
Wonderful training. Makes me of the mind that well-trained horses increase in value with age and experience.
How delightful. You and Roly made me cry at about the 8 minute mark, just to see your relationship, so loving and full of trust; it's a rare thing in today's world, rare and precious. God bless you and Mel and your home and work and horses, also your schooling horses and their owners at the holidays, and happy 2017. Meeting you all through you tube has enriched my life.
ancientsgate so glad I wasn't the only one crying seeing the bond they have. Very well said
ancientsgate Ditto. Cheers from another fan in Ottawa, Canada. ✌️😎💕

Santas lost his beard and 25 years! Looks like a new fella for the new year :D
This personal interview was lovely. Thanks.
Shave and a haircut - 2 bits!
What a beautiful horse, and what a heartwarming relationship you have!
Good job! Roly loves you. He doesn’t need them other horses - they come and go - your his steady buddy. When he isn’t working with you - he just wants to unwind - enough of those brats all day! It is so amazing the interaction you get with a horse when you spend that many years day in and day out. I use to see if with farm horses or mules that did everything for the homestead. You still see it in the USA with the Amish or Mennonite work horses. Anything you need to do on the farm, from working fields, logging, getting someone, unstuck, pulling beams up on barn just like a crane would do, getting in hay, bringing crops to market, kids to school, a ride to town in the evening, or buggy on Sunday for church - my grandfather and great uncle said - they couldn’t live without the horses.
I love Roly. He seriously is a one in a million horse. Can we be introduced to Bentley please?
The love! Just how it's supposed to be. :)
Lovely to see the devotion from both you and the horse! You can't buy that, and rarely obtained from a book! ;-)...I have a ID x TB bottled fed her as orphan, rising 17 hunts all day with daughter on, and knows instantly if a strange rider, is a rider, or a passenger! , propper school mistress, I am absolutely loving these fresh look vids, Great work both of you xx
Loving your approach Barry. Wish you were nearby. You'd never get rid of me. You're team seem awesome also. What a fab relationship you have with this old man. Brilliant.

Merry Christmas Rolly!!!! We love you
Beautiful!!!
Roly the Saint ❤
My fav vlog, I miss him.
interesting chat
yess i was waiting to see a roly video
great vid
If we all treated each other and animals the way you treat your horses, my job as a Police Officer would be obsolete. If only it were so! Your relationship with Roly is beautiful...and rather rare these days as horses aren't a normal part of the family unless you're Amish. I pray God will allow me to one day have a beautiful mule to train to drive and that we'll have the kind of relationship you have with your Roly boy. God bless!
yay Roly
He's beautiful
You put a lot of trust in the driver's of vehicles.
Barry.. im fascinated by the neck braces you use... i rarely use head collars unless i have to tie up and lead.. are these collars more specific to driving.. whats the good thing about these compared to head collars and any other info pls buddy xx
Hi, thanks for your comment! We made a video about these neck collars explaining why we prefer using them over headcollars - if you click on this link it will go into more detail about them: czcams.com/video/cUTyUprBl_Y/video.html
Is the black horse (around 5:40) your horse as well? If so, is he a 'backup' for Roly when Roly's on time off? Roly's a wonder to watch, as are the rest of the team :)
Yes, the black horse is our 4yo, Bentley, who will eventually take over from Roly when he retires.
That was a long time walking and trotting on the road. You don't think over time that is not good for the horse's legs.
😶
the only thing I don't like is Roly is wearing a collar around his neck now I get that he probably won't do anything like get caught on anything but if he was too then surely he would strangle himself! it also didn't look like it was leather so it wouldn't snap, bit confused?
Anna Rigsby yes we use the neck collars instead of head collars but we don't leave it on him when out unsupervised in the field. He's good to catch so usually goes out with nothing at all on except a rug!
barryhook2 oh great!! thats all good ;))
Barry, just saw you putting your hand in Roly's mouth. Just wondering is that what happened your little pinkie? lol.
tiny danne haha no it wasn't a biting incident - he got knocked over by a horse who then stood on the finger with his freshly-shod hoof! Badly broken so he had it amputated 🤕
Ouch !. Barry/Melanie, if you get a chance, youtube Beautiful Durrow 30.10.16.
Comment please whether you think my horse looks safe, confident and happy. Thanks in advance.
I don't mean to be rude. But what happened to your pinky finger on your right hand?
No problem; a horse knocked Barry over and then stepped on it with a freshly-shod hoof. 25 breaks and it wasn't worth saving as they couldn't guarantee he would get the use of it again, so he had it amputated.
barryhook2 oh ok
MegaNatasha13 I was wondering the same but didn't want to ask as its non of my business why Barry's got a poorly hand☹️
That must have hurt like hell.Ouch
