- In this video, we're putting together a team of horses that have only been driving a short amount of time and have never been in a team before.
You could call it a 'class field trip', without the schoolmaster!
See how they got on leaving the yard and if you enjoyed this video, keep an eye out for the next part of the trip in coming weeks.

You are a brave man taking a load of teenagers out on a charabanc! That little one in the front left is like a fart in a trance, no clue what a straight line is. Well done for getting home safe and not ending upside down in a ditch with a carrot on your head. Pure delight to watch with the anticipation of chaos at any moment, but as always, you, horses and us watching, all in your safe capable hands, arrive home safely. Thankyou for a Most enjoyable outing.. From an old grandmother.
🤣🤣 Yes it is indeed teenage hour out! Barry is very brave ❣
😂😂😂fart in a trance. Just classic
Hilariously put!
Barry Hook is amazing, lifetime of experience, rubber bits, zero abuse makes him unique. This is the kind of man people turn to when needed. God bless him
I always think how BRAVE you are to do what you do, and then my next thought is about the amount of knowledge, experience, and skill that helps you make good decisions. Thank you for sharing your trip with us. Blessings.
Thanks- let me get my American Donuts and Coffee for this ride! Cheers!
When I see Barry driving a Four in Hand team I always think of the grand Georgian/Regency days of horse drawn carriages etc. and wonder at the skill of the Royal Mail Stagecoach drivers, and hired public coaches, with drivers wearing their caped Greatcoats. I imagine the hustle and bustle of pulling into a Coaching Inn for a change of team and to give the passengers a break. Watching Barry work a team really puts into perspective just how skilled these men were and why they were feted by their peers.
Delightful! Thanks for the ride along!😊
Thank you for sharing a lovely video! 🥰
Barry - you are a brave and kind man 😁, taking on 4 teenagers at once 🐴🐴🐴🐴! Nell 💟 is showing a lot of promise. Love that you try to make the horses' first drive as easy as possible by using the brakes 🙏
Fantastic Work Barry, Rhi and Team!!🙂👍👍
I've not driven Four in hand, for many years,,
and I have the utmost Respect for you taking those Teenagers out and about, 😁
Learning to become safe, happy and confident!!🙂👍👍
Awesome!!💞
Blessings to you for sharing your knowledge, experience and understanding!!🙂👍
Much love from
Andréa and Jasper. ...XxX...
Well done Babies !!! Love it!! Wonderful Barry! They are learning !
It’s all about the ground work and lead up to this point, as you say, Barry. I love that you don’t anthropomorphize them, assigning them ‘agendas’ and saying they have ‘plans’ to upset their humans! Your knowledge of driving and connection with horses and attention to what they need is such a skill built over a lifetime, and that you share it is a gift!
Two more points:
A team of people who know ( at the right time) what to do
Ideally without telling them.
And the right practice area.
Love the respectful careful vehicle drivers, we don't get many of them in NY, USA
I met you in Cochrane Alberta. I was with a lady who had a team of donkeys. I loved your salt of the earth Character.
You told a bit of your growing up, time spent with a traveling man…
Please, document and have written your personal history. I would happily pay 50$ USD to read about your young life in your words. Better yet, an audio book and listen to your unique voice and expression.
I am really certain that I’m not the only person who would make your effort worthwhile. You’re as important to driving as any superstar that we read about. No not in a sporty way like an Olympian. A real life practical and useful way. The only way that matters. Real life driving and life.
Sincerely Carla. The mule lady.
I've been a long time subscriber and I compete in classic pleasure driving, fine harness, and carriage driving and I'm always learning something new from your videos. Taking those youngsters out for a field trip is so exciting!!!
Excellent!
It looked like he was looking for a soft surface. Great job driving the group.
She is fully shod, so unlikely. She also drifts left onto the rocky cultivated land when we take her around the set aside!
Enjoyed the drive and your explanation of groundwork makes it possible and then experience, as recognizing a road is a road, adds to it. Nice reasons behind it, as socialization, teamwork, etc.
Your videos came across my feed about a year or so ago. I enjoy watching them so much. I used to ride every day but then I had a bad accident and it took quite some time to recover. I gained weight and my horse aged. She had sustained bad injuries. We healed, we aged, her better than I. I didn't ride anymore after that. I've often toyed with the idea of driving. You make it look like it's such a wonderful experience. I admire your courage and appreciate your knowledge. In my younger years, I wish I had been able to learn from someone with your patience and skill. You are one of a very few left of a dying breed of horseman.
I wish I could study under you. I miss interacting with horses, but at the same time, I have to admit, I'm scared.
Keep up the awesome videos! Maybe one day I can change my situation and learn to drive too.
Most wonderful and informative ride along
When the one pair wants to go left and the other pair wants to go right...
Lovely 🥰
I'm running out of new ways to tell you how much I admire and respect you. Would love to see how you teach the fell pony to stay on the road.
I would love to see what Barry could do with a horse on another channel called Farouk. This horse seriously needs Barry’s calm and safe training to regain confidence.
Farouk's owner does not do him any favors with her training methods. That poor horse needs a more quiet and patient trainer.
If you mean the Farouk I think you mean, he is an ex Arabian showing horse when was younger. That world really screws their heads up! I had a lovely Arabian for while from that background, it left him extremely nervous and reactive. That type of showing needs banning.
You need cloudy boy there to keep at the front in line do you think it’s white one in the front right pushing the other near side in. ..thanks Barry .
No. The little skewbald pony was showing a willingness to do its job.
He is worth his weight in gold! But this was a 'class field trip without the teacher' haha In previous years we would use George our pony schoolmaster out the front of a team. You can see her at work (bay pony) in other team videos.
One thing I do now is keep a neck collar on my ponies. Don't need it often but comes in handy every now and then
Us too! Never drive (or ride) without them!
THANK YOU for sharing your journey, I feel like I'm there. I had a bit given ME it's a best solid nickel silver ro no 351453 .IT has ridges on one side I think it must HAVE been some sort OF driving bit .Hope you May NO some more information. Take care and all the best. 😊😊😊😊😊😊👍👍
If it has ridges on one side it may be a serrated Liverpool bit or a Military Reversible.
the pony legs gotta move to stay ahead of horse legs.... :-)
Do insurance companies still work with you
or guardian angels?
There can't be many serious accidents that have happened to you,
otherwise you wouldn't exist there anymore.
So it is possible,
but only for very few. ---
