  • PROPERLY STUCK IN A LIFT - It's high up on my bucket list!!!
    However, microprocessor control means that you can program "if stuck, then start up again and let passengers out" - IT'S NOT GONNA HAPPEN IS IT??? I WANT RELAYS!!!!
    But this is at least a contender, we did get stuck (for a short time GRRRRRRR!)
    By the way, please don't refer to the lift as a death trap because lifts are designed go up and down a shaft with passengers. No matter how grotty they look, I've never heard of one that is designed to trap and kill (sorry, just a little annoying phase I hear too often haha! ;)

    It's terrible that no one was responding to the alarm.
    The lifts at my workplace make a very irritating alarm sound and there is a (Kone) phone at the office that has such a loud, permanent "beep" going on you GOTTA take it off and answer to the cab's intercom, else your ears fall off..
    EDIT: Ah, yeah, the notice in the end is in every cab. So yes, 10 seconds would have done the trick!

      At the place i used to work at for a short while, you had to "acknowledge" an elevator alarm (This was done to prevent prank calls) and the high-pitched "Wi-U Wi-U Wi-U" Kone alarm made my ears bleed until i or someone else hit "acknowledge" and made it connect to Kone...

    Great video never have been stuck but I was in an elevator here in the states that free falled. It was a 1940's Otis touch sensitive that dropped while other cars were being modernized it went unresponsive at first floor then all the way up to 16 then just dropped but thankfully stopped at 15 and opened. The force did force me to my tiptoes then I fell to the floor when it stopped.

    • @upanddownadventures
      @upanddownadventures Před 6 lety +3

      Were a lot of people in the elevator, or were you the only one in the elevator? If it was a traction elevator, if it was a brake failure, it would have freefalled going up as the counterweight is heavier than the car, unless the car was filled to over half of the capacity or so. I doubt all of the cables snapped as that would be very unlikely, and if they snapped the governor would have cut off power to the elevator, and the doors would have not opened.
      Maybe the motor was running faster than it should for some reason, and stopped suddenly because it couldn't slow down that quickly (I think once the stop contact on the selector completes the circuit, the brake is applied on a relay logic elevator, if it was travelling at an unintended high speed it may not come close to slowing down before stopping).
      Do you know if the elevator ran after this happened?

  • @Kalamus_
    @Kalamus_ Před 7 lety +2

    Hey Mr Matt, i have a story when me and my father (with 2 strangers) ever got stuck in a lift and get rescued (not by the emergency hatch). I was about to go up with the elevator. The floor number wasn't showing when we enter the lift (which is suspicious) but i decided to enter the lift. When i enter the lift, the door slowly close then when i picked what floor i wanted to go, it didn't light up. The doors open button isn't responding either but the lights was on. I decided i press the Emergency button for 5 sec (i followed how Heritage Elevator did it) and they respond! They tried to open the door using the lift door key but it didn't work idk why. So they called their crew to force open the doors and i think there is 4 people just to open the doors. it took about 5 minutes just to open the doors to let us free. The lift isn't that old at all (maybe its about 7 years old right when i got stuck). There are many people watching us to get rescued at that time. When we got out we just thank them then used the escalator. The next day me and my father wanted to use that elevator again and it did pretty normal (no even scared, just wanted to try for fun). Although that lift was a bit faulty than the other lift which is the same. If you are wondering what lift is that its Mitsubishi Elevators (probably they bought the cheap ones lol).

      @mrmattandmrchay  Před 8 lety +3

      +Elevation Station Productions Thanks! Took me about 1 hour to film it - took a lot of practice to get the camera angle exactly right, activate the shaft lighting at the right time, and then get the lift to go non-stop to the top floor. Then another month to edit it! Tracking the top and counterweight(lightning effect) too ages!. When I was filming it, I actually "DIDN'T" have an idea that it would become my intro. I wanted something like this... czcams.com/video/OBiqFLdPIQ8/video.html see 1:04. I wanted to film under a lift, going into the pit with "mrmattandmrchay" logo coming out of pit. But after I reviewed the footage, I realised that "this is it!!! my intro". I think is much better than the dark pit idea, as I love the lighting effect of the flood lights on the concrete ceiling.

    I was stuck in an elevator/lift once in 2016. We were in a car in a 5 story office building. We were all going up from the ground floor. Lightning struck the building and we lost power. The car didn't go to the next floor but stopped dead. The lights went out and we turned on our flash lights on our cell phones. There were 3 of us, all strangers, one person in a panic. The fire alarm went off and we pushed the alarm and call buttons. A person responded and we waited... We heard the fire department sirens and a lot of commands being yelled out. We started pressing the alarm ringer in a pattern of SOS. They heard us and they made sure we weren't in danger. Then waited a bunch more. Fire department was there.. couldn't get the doors open. They did put the fire out on the outside roof, apparently it was the building's sign that got struck. They start using all sorts of pry tools and we see just a bit of light coming through the crack in the doors they had made. We saw we were stuck between two floors. The elevator company eventually arrived and got the door open. I'll never forget it was a Fire Marshall who helped me climb out of the car. He was not a bit happy as we were stuck in the elevator car for 2 hours. I used the stairs for the remainder of time that we worked out of there. As silly as it sounds, If I take an elevator, I at least make sure I've got a few provisions.

    A few years ago we were at a church function in a school hall, the hall being on the second floor with a mini lift probably more for wheelchairs etc. The main rout being by a nice wide set of stairs.
    Anyway, at the end, a bunch of people packed into the lift only to get stuck at the ground floor. The lifts doors had windows and it appeared the car had gone too far, or was it overweight, either way it just sat there ignoring the buttons and with no obvious way to open the door.
    A school official came over and opened a panel next to the lift, in it was a strange handle/shaft thingie with a hinge in the middle aloingside some more buttons etc, he had no idea about the handle, however I figured it out, inserting it into a hole, allowed the hinged bit to drop, I then slowly turned it where it engaged with the door mech and allowed us to manually open the doors.
    As soon as everyone was out the lift sprung back into life, kind of validating my thought on overweight.
    The official had also called a maintenance tech, however he was over an hour away, not sure how the people in the lift would have coped as it was very tight in there, with probably poor ventilation.
    After everyone was out we could now see a warning sign, "maximum load 3 people", I think we had double that in there if not more.
    My only other incident was with a few blokes from work, one a tad over-energetic started doing Muhammad Ali type manurers, dancing around us and throwing short punches. The lift car started bouncing somewhat, then everything shut down. nothing was working other than the light. Luckily after a delay everything kicked back in and we were able to select a floor and get out. 'Muhammad Ali' having leaned his lesson and staying still.

    I must admit, it would freak me out that the lift thought it was on level 9 when really on 3. But, thinking back to your videos on how lifts work, the controller would catch up quickly and display the correct floor when you got to the basement (as it did in this video). Plus, there are things like limit switches, emergency stop brakes and unless all those systems are comprimised, you are pretty safe.
    Would hate to be claustrophobic though >.

    I hate elevators (lifts) a fear of getting stuck I guess. (but love your videos). When I was in a hotel, my family and I were in the lobby and were waiting for a lift. A fat family was in line first, the doors opened, they got in, the other lift was climbing up for someone else, so we had no choice except to get in with the fat family. I tell you, they must have been at least 700lbs, all together. 2 childs, 2 parents. Horrible. Plus us which may be 400. We were struggling to get up to the 4th floor. It was the longest lift ride and scariest I ever had! Once we got there, the fat fam. got off first and the elevator INSTANTLY went up 4 inches to meet the floor properly :D :D
    Thought the cables were going to snap that ride.

    • @mrmattandmrchay
      @mrmattandmrchay  Před 8 lety

      +Kai Attree Something is definitely not happy. A complete guess is it's a power supply related issue to a particular part of the controller (could be low volts taking that part of the system offline for a short time, then it recovers). The floor indicator when it woke up, it was out of sync, but very soon corrected by the position switch at the bottom of the shaft.

    • @pikakai
      @pikakai Před 8 lety

      mrmattandmrchay Is the lift original or is it modded (and was is modded by generic? Generic mods can sometimes be really cheap and nasty and affect the reliability of the lift)

    • @upanddownadventures
      @upanddownadventures Před 8 lety

      +mrmattandmrchay
      I have seen an elevator with a somewhat similar issue (every now and then, the elevator would suddenly stop when moving if moving, and the indicator would go out, but then the indicator would turn back on maybe about 5-10 seconds later, and the elevator would move again if you press a floor button, was the elevator losing power?).

    • @mrmattandmrchay
      @mrmattandmrchay  Před 8 lety

      +Kai Attree When the car park was built in early 1990s, only the RIGHT lift existed. They put the shaft in for the left lift, but never installed it. Mid-late 1990s then put in the LEFT lift, which is slightly more modern - the buttons and LED displays inside the lift are slightly more modern. So they are BOTH original, but right lift was installed when the car park was built in 1990, the left lift installed about 5 years later.
      Having said this, these are just generic lifts from the 1990s.

    • @mrmattandmrchay
      @mrmattandmrchay  Před 8 lety

      +upanddownadventures Very difficult to tell, but it would appear that some part of the controller stopped working causing the lift to stop and go into idle state ready for a new call to be placed. Exactly what can cause this depends on the type of controller and parts that go into making up the complete control system. In my experience of the systems we use (non-lift related) a lack of voltage due to a degraded low voltage power supply "I guess" could cause such an issue. When relays or contactors de-energise, volts increase enough to liven up the controller again, etc.

    • @mrmattandmrchay
      @mrmattandmrchay  Před 6 lety

      Not sure and can only guess. My guess is, one of the controller cards or detectors depowered due to a power supply problem. When it lost communication then the lift cannot determine the input/output status of whatever failed. The controller card resets, the lift can start again. Very vague but unless you are an engineer sent out to fix it, we can only just guess.

      These are roped hydraulic, which is a hydraulic ram at the side of the shaft and several pulleys, making... 1 movement of the ram=2 movements of the lift (1:2 ratio). They are still there, but the RH lift button's have recently been replaced.

      I wonder how to install lifts in an already finished lift shaft.
      The '69 lift in my residential building is breaking down more often and it gets expensive. It has some creepy visuals outside the cabin (looks like pre-WWII and I would not be surprised if there's asbestos) but the TÜV (German technical supervision agency thingy) finds faulty safety features here and there every time they inspect that thing and I wonder if we owners (54 appartmens and each contributes to the upkeep of the whole estate) can replace it one day.

      when I was a kid, me too, but my interest in lifts turned into a facination so "NOW" I would welcome being trapped and rescued just for the experience!! But since I was a kid, I've learnt all about lifts and I know that being hurt in one is very very unlikely.

    • @Zedek
      @Zedek Před 7 lety

      There is not much of a rescue going on. I've been stuck and there was no fire brigade or something, it was a guy from the building management that basically changed to manual operation in the lift room and slowly moved the cab down until I could escape and then opened the door with the evactuation "key" (a little hex-wrench thing) by shoving it into a hole of the metal door frames and pushed the doors aside. He just asks if everything's fine and most probably turns the lift on and off and buzzes off... But you could probably also start a nice chit-chat with that guy, as you are a lift hobbyist :-)
      Also, the alarm sound is a terrible fire alarm-like digital "ee--ooo--ee---oo" noise, so no nice ringing like in this video :) Kone likes electronic noises for lifts apparently.
      At my workplace, also a KONE, the 2001's freight elevators are hydraulic and you rescue people by turning it off completely in the engine room and release pressure from the system*. There is a little button/switch thing on a tank-like part of the machinery and it makes a very loud hissing noise outside the machine room when you press it, so I really guess I am taking away pressure by releasing compressed air, just like the doors of a omnibus. Apparently it works similar to a tipper truck. The cabin then goes down very, very slowly by its own weight and then you can open it in the lower floor with said hex-wrench. Evacuation by gravity :-) Note it's a 2-storey lift, this is of course not as easy in a multi-storey building.
      * This is at least what that TÜV guy during his explanation told us. I have signed that I understood how to rescue people but I forgot all of it already again.

      @@Finnstrains Ah thanks Finn! And no worries - I remember these lifts well. Back in the early 90s when the swan threate was built, only one lift existing on each side of the car park, but the lift shaft for the second lift was built. About 2 years later, they added the second lift (now, 2 lifts on each side of the car park). The first lifts had dewhurst buttons and a really crappy LED matrix display. The newer lifts had slightly different, but generic buttons, and a 7-segment LED display (still exists now). In about 2010, the LED displays on the landings were updated, but that's about it. So you still have a lift with 80s style dewhurst, and the lift next to it with slightly more modern buttons.
      To answer your question, they are generic hydraulics - I've no idea which company installed them, but the parts are just generic ones that you can buy anywhere in the lift trade.
