"You look at the audience....if they're falling asleep, you go back to the riff"
I think that's the most relaxed and fun I've ever heard Rick.
Laurence Wilson Yeah, he's pretty at ease here, probably because he's talking to Guy, whom he would know well and be comfortable with.
That album changed my life
irishelk It changed my life too
mine too
How?
same
that album changed music history
This is cracking! I did meet Rick at the DG "Remember That Night" DVD premiere. He was very gentle and enthusiastic. Nice hearing a good long interview with the great man.
Awh id say that was great, your lucky.
Thank you for this! Oh my gosh. To hear Rick being interviewed uninterrupted and relaxed and enjoying himself is a real treat. Of course Guy Pratt had a big part to play in that. Man I wish we had more of this!!
I love the part where they're talking about the ending of bike and Rick's quacking haha. It's too cute.
Yeah, makes you wonder what Guy put in that tea... :/
the insane goose.
I thought the quacking was a reversed audio of the band laughing?
@@thinginground5179 I thought it was children laughing lol
@@thinginground5179 it's two overdubs of someone laughing slowed down.
The whole thing about Astronomy Dominé is gold. D-demolished chord. And he mentions his jazz background like he's confessing a guilty pleasure.
Love how he says the last names, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, like the whole world isn't on a first name basis with The Beatles. Such a kind soul.
Those occasional background meows... I always knew that Rick was a cat person :)
Anyway, a really interesting insight into the making of Pink Floyd's first album! And a rare opportunity to hear Rick speak his mind, coz he had always been 'the quiet one'.
RIP Rick Wright. We're missing you.
Vlad KazimirovI know, me too! He just *looks* like a cat person...😸
Jesus christ, I thought I had a cat dying outside my window. Had to walk outside and take a look, I was so confused until I read your comment
What a lucky man to be related to one of the best musicians ever. RIP Richard Wright.
that was fabulous.R.I.P.Mr.Rick Wright.
So wonderful that Rick lived to see the 'vocal' credit added to his name on the CD rereleases (inexplicably this correction has not been made to the vinyl rereleases). Rick died just over a year after this aired. His singing is one of the elements of their sound that attracted me in the first place. It is worth mentioning that Rick also sings lead on "Matilda Mother".
Exactly... that was my comment as well. Rick was the glue in Pink Floyd
we have movies about Fredie M , Elton J. Story about Pink Floyd sounds so fascinated , would be great if some producers decided to make a movie about Pink Floyd . when tragic event turns into the glorius carrier those four musicians
So in short : Nick with his saucerful , is the first to actually play those Piper songs Live for us .......thank you Nick and Guy !
I know, right!!
I can't believe that "Lucifer Sam" wasn't a big hit, such a cool catchy tune, covering it in me new band!
Thank you Mudman for uploading this!!!
Rick commented they actually improved when Syd left, but in my opinion, Piper At The Gates.. was the launching pad that set it all into motion. Syd influence (particularly with Roger) haunted the rest of Floyd's concept albums, musically & particularly lyrically. For me, the experimental years, was the era I appreciate the most, till this day!
Although Meddle & on, were more creative, interesting & radio friendly.
Great interview
Great interview !
My right ear is sad that it didn't get any Rick :(
I have recordings of 1967 Floyd shows where they play some of the songs Rick says we're never played live. Strange, he is adamant yet incorrect.
Awesome!
For all the respect and admiration i have for Rick, Come on Rick, don't tell me that u fogot the Games for may concert,?? Where you performed almost all of piper at the gates of dawn songs, including bike.. I saw ALOT of awesome concert's in my life, but i would trade off all of these concert's for the games for may concert.
Ah, his memory was faulty, because I've definitely heard tapes of "Arnold Layne" live by the original band. Pity Rick's no longer with us, but 10sept1967, Copenhagen.
Matilda Mother as well!
Yeah they played those songs but I understand why he said that they only played Interstellar Overdrive, Astronomy Domine and Pow R Toc H because they played mostly instrumentals when they were performing. They didn't like to play songs like See Emily Play and Arnold Layne live but they had to, because those songs were the popular songs. Mathilda Mother has this long and interesting instrumental parts so that must be the reason they played it.
Not only that, but there are several set lists from 66-67 which include many of Syd's shorter, poppier songs from the album. His memory is definitely faulty.
I saw an interview with Roger Waters where he said they refused to do See Emily Play live and had beer poured on them from the balcony above. I think Nick Mason said in his book they threw coins at them because they wouldn't do Syd's songs. But as people say they did play those songs live occasionally it's in the bootlegs.
I’m drinking whisky as I listen to this, and I’m sure I’m not the only one.
Pow Are Tock Heytch.... Riiight.. For years I'd been pronouncing it Pow Are Tock...
I always pronounced it Power Touch 🤷
I thought Rick had the main vocal on Matilda Mother??
He does.
there best music they put out . number 1
Nope😜
Meow!
Meow 😺
Interesting that Rick's memory was so off about the songs they played live. They did Lucifer Same at the 67 k4 discotheque in Brighton and also for Games For May. Pow R Toc H was done often too, and there are interviews where Rick even said that he did not like doing the animal noises during live sets for Pow R Toc H. He was a brilliant keyboard player and a nice guy. Possibly what ever meds he was on for his condition affected that memory a bit. But still a very interesting interview.
Is there someone that saw the Pink Floyd at "Spontaneous underground" gigs between march and june 1966? ; i'm curious to know how long an improvised floyd song could last ....
I've never been to one, but from what I've heard from people I've spoken to who gone to those shows they would play interstellar overdrive 30 minutes to 45 minutes
@@bryantcuriel1641 thanks a lot this is a truly important information! At that time i think they went one step further at least during the period march until october 1966 in europe....
In U.s.A i think they had first The Fugs and the Velvet underground which experimented 1 year earlier!
WOW. Rick says reflecting on the success of Piper (went to #6) did the band think "this is going to sell" no they did not consider it will be successful, they only had that thought when they were making Dark Side 22:30
By concept, yes, Take Up Thy Stethoscope does not fit, but by sound, I think it does.
Syd and Rick look quite alike at that stage.
They were also living at the same address, the house would have had a very creative vibe I would think.
Years ago,I heard an early and rare floyd song, post Syd I think, but don't know the title. If anyone knows it,let me know what it is. This song is about 6 minutes long,is sung by Rick or Roger and had an upbeat,Bach-like melody on the pipe organ with a trippy psychedelic middle 8 guitar solo. I don't know if Guy played the bass on it. It had a young love theme with snippets of lyrics that went;"AS WE DANCE and"STILL WE DANCE". Thanks
for the love of god will you please let Rick talk?!?!?!?
5:50 - 6:09 more meowws.
I have heard a version of Flaming from one of the old recordings.
Guy, I can hear you drinking tea when the actual interview starts. Sounds like it was really hot (slurp slurp).
observant ears.
13 months before Ricks promotion and they obviously knew it. Guy is totally Floyd Glue IMHO.
Without a doubt at the very least, Guy is a much more capable bass player than Roger.
One can read the beef between Rick and Roger within the lines
Yeah well, Rick had years of Roger grinding him under his heel and not giving him the recognition he felt he deserved (and yes, Roger feeling like he rescued and carried the band because everyone - cough, Rick, cough - was too lazy) so I don't really blame Rick for putting the occassional dig in. He did say he would have liked another reunion again and he would shake Roger's hand...
Take up thy stethoscope, dosn't fit but it does if you know what I mean. Every great album should have an 'eccentric',imposter(even weak track). ..adds a nice contrast in the overall balance I feel
4:25 4:36 I hear a cat.
just heard it
It's Lucifer Sam
@@nectarinedreams7208 Sam died a long time before Rick.
Didn’t know that GP married Rick’s daughter. ❤
Let's go to Pow R Toc H. What the *hell* is that about then?!
- It's about nothing, Guy, absolutely nothing.
- The title, even--?!
- Call Roger.
Rick's memory was all messed up lol
I would have built a recording studio around Syd and said do whatever you want and we will figure out how to paste it together. The clash between the label wanting hits and the band wanting creative freedom soured Syd on the business. Too bad Sir George Martin didn’t recognize Syd’s greatness and take him under his wing after the Beatles broke up (same time period). Making music for commercial purposes lacks soul and integrity. Many will sell their soul for a buck but not Syd
Rick sings on the verses to Matilda Mother, no?
The fucking cat in the background at 23:15
I got the 100 like!! Hooray!!
What?! He can't remember probably. "Pow R Toc H" and "Matilda Mother" appear on almost all the boots of this era.
Guy doing a nice mix of Kenny Everett and Mike Smash... 🤪
This would def appear to be following a liquid lunch. 9:47 - astromony ?????
O
So Pratt took over the role of the guy who sacked his father-in-law from Pink Floyd. Nice little piece of karma from Rick.
Awesome!! I wish they've done this with every album.
I can't stand Guy Pratt as a musician but this is a great interview.
I felt the same way about Pratt as a musician, but after listening to his playing I realize he is a good bass player, but totally wrong for Pink Floyd. He belongs in a funk band or a jazz fusion group. Seems like a nice guy though. I could not stand him when I saw that comfortably numb live video they did in the 80s and he was ding that kind of dance move while playing it. Was just an awful choice for a PF bass player. But if you give him a listen, for the right music he is definitely a very good player.
@Adriana Matlack I disagree. Saw him play with PF several times. Was excellent bass player. Didn't miss waters at all!!
Syd was the most créative , Rick was the sound of PF ....up to74 .after id never try to listen like thé wall or else which were " lift musics"....
