    I think David gets a little irked with the bending questions because its just a simplistic explanation of what he "nicked". I know tons of guitar players who think bending is just "something you do" when in reality for people like David its all about the note and avoiding the restriction of frets to get a smoother sound. He usually is bending to a specific note, not just "bending" and when people say "oh you bend" he's just like "yeah everyone does."

      I kinda thought he was being humble. All he plays is pentatonic scales and he’s consider one of the greatest rock guitar players and the reason is his approach to bending, no one does it like him

    • @peteolson6093
      @peteolson6093 Před 3 lety +2

      What he's specifically known for is doing double bends - bending a whole step up, letting it ring, then bending up another whole step without picking first (or with). Sometimes he'll go another 1/2 step further and then release the bend. The solo from Brick Part 2 is a good example. That you could call a signature technique, but just talking about 'bending notes' doesn't distinguish his playing from anyone else's. That's like thinking Johnny Marr was the only guitarist to use chord arpeggiation.

    • @clarkoption1941
      @clarkoption1941 Před 3 lety +2

      @@peteolson6093 in another brick in the wall youre talking about the bend on I think B I don’t have a guitar on me but I think it’s the 15th fret G string you do a full bend release and then another one that is like 2 1/2, I think he does it on shine on you crazy diamond. But I think his real peak of skills is on animals and he utilizes bends in such a unique way. There’s also his subtle use of tremolo bar. He does a lot with very little.

    • @mikearchibald744
      @mikearchibald744 Před rokem

      He's said before that guitar playing is as much about 'how you move your hands' as anything else. Steve Howe, Steve Hackett, all those prog guys bent strings all to hell. Go listen to 'Soon" by Yes, and he's pretty much playing his guitar like a violin. And the violin spirit is a perfect metaphor because at that level there is really no describing what it is they are doing, you can watch it, you can replicate it, but its still not quite 'it'. Thats why the word 'style' exists. Prog exists in its own class because they took blues and combined it with classical, some just combined it with pop. But while 'prog' artists are lumped together, they are all very different. You can analyze it forever, but the 'ugly' fact is, if somebody else had joined Floyd, we may well be talking about 'THEIR' style. Especially in a band its very difficult to break things down analytically (in the music anyway). We don't even have the LANGUAGE as of yet.

    Albatross really is a work of art. In the Mac documentary Mick talks about it being a copy of some hawaian artist but I couldn't really understand him and have gone through a lot of crappy hawaiian music. But albatross is one of those 'from the gods' kind of tunes.I was surpirsed when he said Dylan and Cohen as inspirations because mostly when I talk to guitar guys or musicians they are more like Phil Collins or Bill Bruford who say they don't even NOTICE the lyrics. And I think its fair to say that Dylan and Cohen are probably more noted for hteir lyrical styles than guitar playing. Its also not surprising that it was Roger Waters who left Pink Floyd and wasn't kicked out. Because I think Waters lyrics rank right up there with Dylan and Cohen, so the idea of basically providing the music for Dylan or Cohen would make any guitarist pretty happy. Of course Waters is not Dylan or Cohen so 'happy' is likely not the right word.
