SERIES SYNOPSIS: Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs. Either way, we have to ask: WTF Happened To This Horror Movie?

It's hard to know who's telling the WHOLE truth about just how much of what we see was actually shot by James Cameron. According to the master of cinema himself, he filmed more than 5 days worth of footage. This included most if not all of the underwater scenes, some of the special effects, & most of the scenes involving the 3 main cast members...Lance, Tricia, Paull. In fact Paull Goldin has said James was on set for most of the entire shoot & since he's in the movie throughout, I'd say he's probably correct.

I remember seeing one interview where Cameron said one of the places he and Assontis butted heads over was the Penthouse Pets who were given their own subplot in the picture (Hmmm, now it would make sense that was something that was shot later, because they're only seen on camera with one other character). I always figured that probably the opening scuba scene, with the couple having sex u/w, before being rudely interrupted by the piranha, was probably also Assontis' doing. But I had someone suggest that Cameron has a thing for u/w peril sequences (as per some of the scenes in Sanctum, which he was a producer on, and some other things that I'm probalby forgetting now), and therefore he probably actually shot that scene himself, and not Assonitis.

@@Kohntarkosz From what I remember, the 2 girls were in James Cameron's version too, just not the scene of them naked on the boat. That scene was apparently added by Ovidio G. Assonitis. As for the opening scene with the 2 divers making out & getting killed underwater, I believe that scene is in the James Cameron version as well, it just happens a little later in the movie. But it's been a long time since I've seen the Laserdisc version, so I can't say for sure.

Up From The Depths is a strange movie. The first half plays like a straight horror movie (or it's trying to anyway), then about half way through, it turns it some sort of satirical piece, played for laughs. It's like they couldn't make up their mind what kind of movie they wanted to make. Scuba scenes are kinda so-so, but I love the black and green wetsuit that Sam Bottom wears in the final scuba scene.
