OMG! I never knew they Mortal Kombatized Street Fighter! I personally loved what they did. In my opinion, the 2D was way better than the crude early 3D. More realism. But thanks for making this vid!
Don't get me wrong, I Loved Raul Julia( Gomez!)
Sent too soon .. sorry.😓😂 But that movie was horrible.😂
I know im asking the wrong place but does any of you know a trick to get back into an Instagram account..?
I was dumb forgot the password. I would appreciate any assistance you can give me
@Eli Gianni Instablaster ;)
Raul Julia was dying and did this movie out love for his son who is a big Street Fighter fan.
Despite the overall film's reception, he is easily the most memorable one there.
@@drakkenmensch I think I heard the story Richard Harris turned down the role of Dumbledore but then his granddaughter told him she 'wouldn't speak to him again' if he didn't do it.
It killed him. It's that bad.
@@T4silly Wrong. While Bob Hoskins did the movie for his kids, it was Dennis Hopper's son who told his kid he did the movie so "he could have shoes", to which his son replied, "I don't need shoes that badly".
Gone FAR too soon from this world :-(
The fact that Raul Julia just accepted the role because his children were fans of the franchise and did with so much professionalism and really in touch with the (joke) mood of the movie is just so neat
This movie holds a special place in my heart because of how much effort Raul Julia put into hamming it up
full respect for the dude, he went hard on everything he was in.
Complete aside:
Zangief's "change the channel" and "you got paid" lines are legit funny stuff.
Followed by Dee Jay's look
This whole movie was a riot. I mean it's good as a B List action movie. Sure as a Street Fighter movie it's a shit show but still.
Zangief's "change the channel!" line has stuck with me ever since I watched the movie as a young kid.
The movie is honestly great as a comedy
You got... paid?!
"Why would you play this game?"
Kylie Minogue in green leotard is enough reason for me 💕
exactly queen kylie
Raul Julia was amazing in this movie. He knew exactly when to overact and chew the scenery, which was the whole time. "For you the day Bison graced your village was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday." Is one of my top 5 favorite movie lines of all time. And I'm an OG Star Wars fan.
Even though he had Stomach cancer he did this for his kids cause his kids love street fighter
@@joandarc441 this guy was a good parent, til the end
*Of course!*
@BrandonB omega is the man.
And MAD?! All I want to do...is create the perfect genetic soldier!
Matt, you missed on the chance of uploading this video...
On Tuesday.
90's Kylie Minogue in a high-cut leotard is a gift from the gods.
Oh hell yes. This movie is worth watching for the cheese, and Kylie.
Amen brother Amen so amazing
Van Damme thought so too.
She is infact a baddie

Have you considered possibly covering notorious hardware flops as well? Stuff like the Ouya (Infamous kickstarter-backed system with specs weaker than your smartphone from 5 years ago), Virtual Boy (A prototype shoved out the door, and its creator was later punished by manning a booth at a show), and Gizmodo (Crappy handheld that ended up exposing the CEO's connection to the mafia) would all make for good "Wha Happuns", IMO.
@@GrubbJunker Or the ATARI Jaguar.
LGR (Lazy Game Reviews) has a pretty good video on the Gizmodo if you're interested.
@@DarkGoombaProduction I am.
The Ouya's existence was one big joke during it's development. I honestly wonder what the creators where thinking and what they're doing now.
Has anyone mentioned "The Phantom" console yet?
"Every corner of my mind palace"
*Is just Hitomi Tanaka and Emma Stone*
Same
sounds like you don't have them in your mind space.
But where's his wife? I like her WAY better than those two honestly.
That's a pretty good mind palace
Something something philosophy. Something something mind palace.
Oh the coke-fueled nineties. It's the only time period I can imagine a studio thinking it's a good idea to literally write a script overnight.
only time period? the Sy-Fy movies disagree with you
@@chrisbuttonshaw2088 LMAO
The pilot for Rick and Morty was written in under/around 6 hours.
@@chrisbuttonshaw2088 Those are TV movies on a network that is often an acid fever dream. Big studio movies generally are not written overnight the day before the presentation, lol.
@@StephanFitzgeraldTay true.
Little correction need to be made. Ernie Reyes jr. didn’t play Akuma in the game, his dad did, Ernie Reyes Sr.
So he won't remind us to bend our knees and use our arms to rude a surfboard?
@@thestranger9608 yeah he played the prince's bodyguard.
The dodging instead of blocking animation sounds cool actually. But would probably be confusing to play against
Well, it ended up for Cody's V-ism in Alpha 3, so the idea wasn't completely dropped.
This video series is amazing. I'm glad there is so much material out there to keep this going for a long long time
We wish we had better games but without so many bad ones "What Happen?" wouldn't exist for so long
That, my friend, is a paradox
Ah yes, the movie where the "OF COURSE!" Meme came from. Good times, good times.
thanks Nostalgia Critic
Raul Julia was the absolute best thing to come out of that movie. :) You know, he actually studied the speech patterns and mannerisms of famous dictators when researching the role?! The man was a true method actor and he gave the performance of his life in this movie!
RIP Raul.
thank you Raul
ya know.... that is what any good actor does. if he was method he'd never get out of character. and thats just an excuse to be a prick.
OF COURSE!
Kylie Minogue as Cammy: Can't your thighs outta my head.
The only memorable thing from the movie.
So yummy man OMG best thing 😍

Ironically, Van Damme could've been the star of Mortal Kombat!
Too bad.............. He didn't
He would have been bad. Linden Ashby was the best choice.
@@cantstopbeeboo2055 Well, that wouldn't have mattered for the game, which is what he was originally offered.
@@starblue6tv lol r u high? Van damme would be best kid
How about Wuh Happened with Operation Raccoon City? That was a real dumpster fire for sure
MrDark086 not sure if the truth ever came out about wuh truly happun
How about "Survival" or the Game Boy Color game "Gaiden"? That one with Leon S Kennedy infected with the T virus.
How about Umbrella Corps lol
@@TulioRamirezGamer i thought gaiden was actually pretty good and fun, not perfect, far from it but still.
I liked racoon city.Sure it was trash, but it was trash you held in your heart.
Fun fact:
The stunt man who played Akuma is Ernie Rayes Sr.
Tbh, I didn't know much about this game besides the fact that it existed. But learning that they had all the movie actors, in costume, learn & perform all the unique moves to become digitized sprites for an actual playable game?! That's kind of awesome, even if they were inexperienced with martial arts and such. If I had been an actor in this movie, seeing myself in the game would have blown my mind. It's such a cute idea.
I'm glad IT lived. I'm always sad when a newbie crew go under in these stories.
Does anyone else want to see a "Wha happun" for Superman64 or Aquaman: Battle for Atlantis
Especially with the aquaman movie still out
Those games have been shat on for so long. I like some of these more obscure games they show, or games that aren't as popular.
@Ahh Ah animates Daikatana was also shat on for a long time and it got an episode of "Wha Happun?"
I do
Mat did one for Superman.
All we need is the one for Aquaman.
Sawada's acting....priceless (cue FF7 victory music) now thats a champion
Suggestion: Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects. A joint arena fighter and comic book effort by Marvel and EA.
Damn, that game was a hot mess, but I really loved it
I only remember the story was kinda creepy.
I still can't believe Kylie Minogue played Cammy
I forgot Kylie Minogue was Cammy :D
Not including Bison's excellently delivered 'He said to them, "I watched Satan fall from heaven like lightning!!!!"
"You still refuse to accept my godhood?!" And the ever immortal line: "The day Bison graced your village, was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday." :')
For those who don't know, it's originally a quote from Jesus (Luke 10:18).
@@phineas81707 "You came here expecting to fight a man, but instead you found a god??" 😁
That "you lost your balls" is just so damn good. Why there aren't more people using that as a meme is beyond my comprehension
Wow, Mortal Kombat II still looks amazing to this day.
My mom unrionically loves that movie for being dumb and fun. She’s a big nerd.
Your mother is a woman of class and taste
But for your dad, movie night was just a Tuesday.
Your mom is a woman of culture, I see.
I love that movie too.
I can relate, my grandpa thinks the doom movie is the greatest popcorn flick.
Your dad is a lucky man!
What I know is, ppl in Japan (who played this game) loved the sheit out of Cpt. Sawada. He became some sort of meme. The "SAWADA SPECIAL”.
Imo both movie and game is lovable as "so bad it’s good" way. I adore them.
Anyways, thanks for the fun Matt!
I've got a suggestion for an episode.
2008's Alone In the Dark, a game that took one of the cornerstone franchises in the survival horror genre and curb stomped on its head.
I would suggest a Wha Happun on the infamous dumpster fires that are Superman 64 or Sonic '06 but I honestly think those dead horses have been beaten to the point where they're just piles of atoms.
So I suggest something a little more obscure but no less embarrassing to a long and celebrated franchise like sayyyy...Castlevania Judgement?
You wouldn't think there would be much territory to cover for TLoZ: Wand of Gamelon and Faces of Evil, but good lord, I've seen a lot of *really* interesting details, such as the cutscenes being outsourced to SERBIAN ANIMATION STUDENTS, so there's gotta be an entertaining episode in there.
I hate it when people say the obvious shit, but I do want to know about the FULL history of the CDI games... not just like "Nintendo no sony Nintendo yes Philips" I mean like, the games themselves.
You got your wish. 🙂
Despite the disaster that is the movie, I find it incredibly fun and entertaining.
That being said, I have a huge love for B-films there is that raw ambition without talent that gives them charm or in the case of this film, the fact that they managed to complete the film despite various problems threatening the creators.
Maybe oneday you could cover Hiveswap's notorious troubled production. The game itself is actually pretty good, but so many behind the scenes fuckups happened with project mismanagement, theft, and any follow ups being left up in the air.
Granted the vid would have to devote too much time to Homestuck's background (and how the game production affected it) and we're still waiting for more of the staff to come forward about wha happun.
The sheer amount of Hiveswap's hellish and confusing production would probably make a MASSIVE video.
I've gotta say Matt. It really seems like you're loving the new freedom you've got to focus on this channel. This series, in addition to all of your more produced videos seem like they're a lot more fun to you than just ongoing LP's. I'm glad that you seem to be happy in this new era :)
Those pronunciations of the special moves are umm, definitely something 😂
13:17. Mega Man's got a right hand on his left arm.
the making of the movie was a sad story. Made me appreciate this movie even more than it already was being bad but good.
Long, beautiful legs of Ming-Na Wen and Kylie Minogue are the best in this movie.
the worst part about this, is that the home port is actually really fun, in so many ways, it's genuinely something i still love to play today, even if it's to laugh at it
Another good thing to come out of this game: Despite how small it is, a community for it exists, and they have hosted many charity events for Covid relief and other stuff
I always think of the 1990 Turtles movie as the big turning point and the last "silly action movie that people actually liked". Street Fighter simply came out too late. The A market movies (like Die Hard) kinda took over and left out the B to D quality movies behind in peoples minds. Also way to many actors in the movie all at the same time. A little bit weird to remember most of Van Damme's other "fighter" movies also had many chars, but instead had them all in the end in a big "tournament" usually so it was less confusing. Im sure people would have loved that kinda of movie even if it had been with "actors" instead of "fighters" (like people still go watch "Rocky" movies, even the bad ones with kids & robots). Instead we got this odd mess of a movie. 10/10 to Raul Julia who clearly gave the role a full on Addams Family char intensity the whole way thru. Still have the imported saturn version somewhere in my collection. Got it as it probably was the cheapest game in the store at the time.
Sheng Long with the dragon arm immediately put me in mind of Trogdor.
Honestly, the Akuma isn't THAT bad looks wise.
Agree I would go ahead and say he's rather perfect in the context of the movie.
But for me that day was a Tuesday
This game gets a super bad rep, but I honestly don't hate it. It's bad in terms of classic SF games, but it's still super playable .
So bad street fighter game but a decent fighting game?
@@jedediahcoulbourne1791 yes
That sounds about what I heard. But as a Saturn owner around the time, I had Alpha, VF2, Children of the Atom, and Night Warriors. So I already had a good share of decent-to-good fighting games. Eventually I wound up with Marvel Super Heroes and imports of KoF '97, Vampire Savior, and X-men vs. Street Fighter. I always kind of wanted to check out SF:TM:TG, but never got around to it.
@@jedediahcoulbourne1791 huh. That's good to hear!
@@soldancer it's not so great, but it could be funny if you laughed watching the movie......
That wasn't just a stuntman who played Akuma but that's the amazing Ernie Reyes Sr.!
Street fighter the movie is a great film.
No really, it’s awful but it’s amazing. I genuinely love it. There are few movies more entertaining.
It's certainly far better than the other live action Street Fighter movie that starred Chun-Li.
Me and my little sister enjoyed watching the movie. We did so multiple time. It's a silly movie but I wouldn't say it's the worst thing ever.
My favourite thing about it is how it doesn't take itself too seriously and while a bit of a mess is still fun and has great one-liners.
I love how the characters float unaturaly around the backgrounds it's such a meme version of street fighter, I wish my arcade had it. 90s arcades where awesome.
At least this film gave rise to that Raul Julia meme, meaning he is still remembered long after his passing.
I watched my first "TheSwitcher" video back in 2009, so I've officially given a decade to watching Matt make fun of the worst Street Fighter has to offer. I'm sure I'll be back in 2029 to say *NO NOT THE HEADBITE*
Kylie minogue: So oiling me up is going to help with the green screen motion capture process huh? SFTMTG crew: uhhhh, yeah totally. it like smooths the pixels....or something (proceeds to dump a gallon of baby oil on her) KM: COOL!!
Zangief yelling "change the channel" was one of the best parts of the movie. That and of course, T U E S D A Y.
Just saying, this should have been released on a Tuesday.
Street Fighter and Mario Bros. still hold a place in my heart. RIP Bob Hoskins, Raul Julia, and Dennis Hopper.
Fuck Mortal Kombat Annihilation though.
On a bittersweet note, I thinks the fact that the fact that this was Raul Julia’s last movie and he was obviously having so much fun with it despite being ill completely validates its existence. Knowing that I’m not sure I’d willingly trade it for an amazingly good Street Fighter movie.
It could have been good, even with the campy tone. TMNT was just as silly, yet it was a much better film because they had a script that was faithful to the source material and enough serious moments to balance things out.
Changing Chun-Li into a reporter instead of an Interpol agent was a huge mistake, as was sidelining Ryu and Ken instead of making them the main characters. The actual fighting tournament needed to be more central to the plot too.
I went to five below once.
There was a massive amount of Aliens Colonial Marines for PS3 on the shelf for $3.
As well as a couple copies of metal gear rising revengence.
Needless to say I got my first metal gear game that day.
You know this is the first arcade Street Fighter game at the time that introduced me to Akuma. I actually didn't know who he was until this game cause in Super Turbo the dude had no name or identity.
As horrible as the movie is, Raul Julia killed it as Bison, and his 'But for me it was Tuesday' line is, in my opinion, one of the GREATEST villain lines of ALL TIME.
I know this is gonna be a controversial hot take, but I think Raul Julia's M. Bison is actually better and more interesting than the actual game's version.
Matt, I'm genuinely so happy you've focused more on your own content! I love all your videos, and I get so excited when I see them on my dash 🌸
This was brilliant! Fun look at the whole SFTM Saga, and of course it's always also really fun to go read back on Alan Noon's writeup on the SRK forums.
Also on that tangent, I wonder if you can also perhaps go see Wha Happun (or in this case, Wha Didn't happun) on another infamous digitized fighting game you surely know as TATTOO ASSASSINS?
How's about doing a "Wha Happun?" on the 2006 Sonic the Hedgehog?
Earthworm fucking Jim before sonic 06 for sure , no disrespect dude ... but seriously earthworm jim deserved better than that :(
*Mass Effect Andromeda is practically screaming for an episode of What Happened?*
Don't worry, Andromeda is sure to be part of the eventual BioWare: Whahappun episode. If Anthem fails, they're probably done.
Man, I really love this series. You've struck gold on this one. There's something so endearing and satisfying about hearing detailed histories of huge flops. If anyone is interested, there's an awesome book detailing the disastrous failure of the film John Carter, and it's a fascinating read. So much talent on that team, and such a failure of a project. It's beautiful to behold.
Did You Know? The Bison Troopers, such as Blade and his palette swaps, and Sawada were given profiles on the Street Fighter V Character Encyclopedia, as to make them canon to the Street Fighter universe?
It's unfortunate that this version of Shen Long wasn't there.
@@shupasopni He actually was there once... as an April Fools joke.
20:45 That anecdote is just fantastic hahahahaha I love it! "It sucked huh? Well it's more than profitable somehow." → the movie industry is more forgiving than the videogame industry I guess.
Say what you will about this movie. Raul Julia did a good job. Shame he's no longer with us. Also, Ming-na Wen (I probably butchered her name, so I apologize if I did) was in this? Interesting.
You did an awesome work, buddy!
Where can I see more footage, particularly the ones where Benny Urquidez or Van Damme show some moves to the actors ?
THANKS!
6:00 My Favorite Part of the Video.
I still think my favorite part of the movie is "For me it was Tuesday*
Street Fighter the Movie: the Game...I had no idea that was even a thing LMAO!
This video released on a particularly flat day for me and really improved my day, so thank you!
I think chalking up the decision to use digitized actors to "because Mortal Kombat was doing it" is shortsighted. It's the game of the movie, after all; making the character in the likeness of real people is an appropriate creative choice in this case, with MK being proof of concept.
Using the literal actors instead of actual trained martial artists and rushing the whole thing too much to capture Street Fighter's style, THOSE were the true bad decisions.
Fei Long and Sheng Long couldn't be added to SF:TM:TG? I guess you could say they were...
...long gone.
How about an episode of 'Wha Happun' on "Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric"?
I’m gonna be honest the Shen Long design actually sounds pretty neat on paper
You have a great series going, Matt. Happy for ya brother, wish you the best.
This is probably one of my favorite stories to hear because of how nutty it is.
I thought Ernie Reyes Sr was Akuma, not Jr.
The only game you can beat up Van dame as Kylie Minogue is worth some coin. also you didn't mention the irony that the MK crew wanted to make a blood sport game entirely around Van dame originally.
I loved time killers, you could get your arm cut off and still fight.
Any chance of a "Wha Happun?" on the Legacy Of Kain series? I already know, but maybe if more people start talking about the series then SquareEnix might pull the IP out of the vault and give it the love that it deserves.
The Street Fighter movie while not great was still decently good. A guilty pleasure easily.
3rd Strike is my favourite fighting game of all time. This possible alternate reality SF III that's based on the movie keeps me up at night.
Huh, I didn't realize til now this is kind of a stealth pilot for the movie-focused episodes of What Happened? Nicely done!
Okay, I'll admit that Time Killers wasn't actually good. But the idea of severing limbs to restrict your opponents move list was awesome. I'd like to see a similar idea in a better game for sure.
12:24 OH LORD THAT ACTING LMFAO! THAT IS BY FAR SOME OF THE STIFFEST ACTING I’VE SEEN IN MY LIFE!!!!
I played this at an arcade in a hotel. I was young but still had the experience to be a contender. I put my first quarter in, picked Vega (cuz I thought he was badass), and I got juggled to death twice in a row. Against my brother's suggestion, I played again - another quarter gone. I picked Vega again and was given the same result. In my young, unbridled anger I bashed the machine with my knee and I did the normal thing of checking the coin return, there I found 2 quarters. In the end I was truly victorious....until I discovered they were Bison quarters
lmfaooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
That intro is still one of my favorite things ever
That game still gave us Kylie Minogue dressed as Cammy and that ain't bad.
I'm liking all the Monster Hunter music throughout the video.
Great vid! Speaking of gearbox, I don’t know if there would be much to report, but battleborn might be interesting to learn about. Like randy pitchford trying to boost game sales by linking R34 art of characters in it on his Twitter.
I actually really enjoyed this game when it was released for the PSX. I was about 11 years old and this was one of the earliest games I played on the system which I borrowed from my sisters boyfriend. I had only played new challengers before on SNES and Megadrive and seeing digitized graphics like this for the first time was a huge deal.
I dunno, Capcom trying to rework Street Fighter: The Movie for a home release was a valiant effort. Look, it was another year or two before Super SFII Turbo would find its way to the Saturn and Playstation... this was the only way to scratch that itch. ("Just buy a 3DO," you say? Yeah, good luck with that.)
This was a good video, though. I learned a lot about the game's production that I didn't know before.
For us, the day Matt McMuscles graced our sub feed was the most important day of our life, but for him, it was only Wednesday.
This series is such an awesome way to learn about the backstories to these infamous games.
