  • Here we have part 1 of a 2 part install video of our classic mini Honda D16 engine swap kit subframe. We go through the process of removing the mini's original A-series engine, prepping the engine bay by doing the necessary cutting and prepping, and finally installing the first half of our subframe kit.

      There is a huge number of old minis in south africa..

      There's around 75,000 mini's in the UK. Only 25,000 licenced. That means up to 50,000 are up for grabs 😉
      I shouldn't say this, all mini's need to stay in the UK 😭
      We have plenty of those nasty BMW minis too. Take them please! 🤣

    @Stevestonmotorco how is the weight of the subframe compared to others on the market (e.g. McGee)? Love the two piece design for ease of install and maintenance.

      They are 80lbs each (which includes the skidplate), and with the lighter Honda engine, they come out to be about the same as a mini set up, which retains handling characteristics around town.

    Do you have a version for a Mk1 Mini - with the earlier style of subframe mounts?

      Yes, we have one mk1 subframe in production that has not been officially spoken for yet, and we have access to a bunch of mk1 donor subframes for special orders too.

    Will mini pedal and master cylinders work on d16? Any features?

      they will, but the clutch pedal return spring is extremely heavy for the honda hydraulic clutch, and the pedal swing has very little movement overall.

      Yes the brake and clutch masters work but the stock mini clutch master is .75” bore and the Honda is 5/8” so if you use the stock one it will be very stiff and a short throw. We recommend either adapting a factory Honda clutch master cylinder or when using a single line brake master there is room for a MGF clutch master to be used, it directly bolts on and is a 5/8” bore.

      @@StevestonmotorcoWhere do the higher costs come from compared to the MCM kit? The price is a little higher and i am deciding to order yours or the mcm kit as i want to retain stock suspension

    You say mini MPI fuel pump is not adequate. I have mini mpi pump WFX100810 which is rated to 121 psi max. I have B18c engine fuel pump which is rated at 48-55 psi, so why would I need to change it?

      Any make of pump that meets the required delivery parameters is suitable.

      MPI pump and tank (with return port) will work just fine, you just need a regulator on the feed.

      We have bench tested a few and the flow rate is different between the two. Perhaps the pressure is the same, but volume is higher with the pumps we have tested. I’m sure it would only be a possible issue at full duty cycle but still it’s good practise to have a new pump and have it matched to the Honda, especially if using a stock ecu

    but you have the engines built by Crafted Classics Tuning LTD, are you not capable of rebuilding such a simple engine? I saw a post some time ago where you were tagged with a classic engine for SMCO

    I will never understand these undertakings for the meager D series.. B or K series all the way, you can't speak about budget when you're this far in already.. spend the money on the right engine.

      We have built cars with D, B, and K series and the D is by far the best compromise between packaging, weight, serviceability and power 👍 130whp in a mini is a ripper

      For mainly road use suitability is usually best practice. (Track only use where power is a priority will obviously treat the original looks as less important)..

      @@Stevestonmotorco agree. It's the engine I want in my my car. Mine's a daily driver so I don't need crazy power, it's more than powerful enough, I'm interested in the every day comfort and ease of use you get.

      @@Stevestonmotorco "compromise" is my problem with this statement with how much work is involved to produce what a 1380 A series could achieve.. to each their own but without the space for a turbo any future power adders become extremely limited. I went with a B18C-R in my '62 and it's not for the faint of heart, but I suppose some folks might want to go through all of this trouble for a spunky grocery getter.
