  • Creating deer mineral sites or mineral licks helps to improve the health of your deer herd and potentially improve the quality of bucks on your property. Deer minerals should just be one part of your deer management program. You can use block style and/or granular minerals that you can place on the ground. Granular minerals will result in a higher intake by the deer vs. a block style that limits the deer to licking up the mineral versus granular being actually eaten. Additional benefits of minerals include helping deer address sodium deficiencies in the summer, providing does support for digestion and lactation while fawning, helping to build the skeletal system of bucks that they draw from as well as their diet when growing their antlers, and enabling you to get an inventory of your deer herd with game cameras. Make sure mineral sites or mineral licks are one of the tools in your toolbox.

I think every region/area has its own ideas. Out west (NE Wa state) we hunt public land mountain whitetail. We cannot use any of these items effectively during the antler growth season for a multitude of reasons. All of these products draw in bears and we have lots of them. Also, the free ranging cattle set up camp over any mineral block until they’ve devoured it all. Not only that but we don’t use them during the growth period because if you draw deer in to regularly visit this products it also draws in the predators. Bears, Cats, coyotes, wolves, etc. The predators will push out those deer from your area. So what we do is we plant a mineral block after November 1st because that is the date the ranchers must remove their cattle from the grazing leases. Also, the bears are really starting to slow down and look for their motel 6 locations for winter hibernation. The mineral blocks give a source of minerals during the hard cold snowy winters there (4000ft elevation) while they’re recovering from the November rut. As far as attractants we use a certain sweet cob bait that we’ve only found in one particular feed store. It has extra molasses in it that makes it tacky to the touch. They can’t resist it. Use it to draw the does in and the bucks that are chasing the doe scent will be coming. You only get one chance because these bucks don’t hang in one area. They will travel miles(ridges, draws, etc) working the winds looking for love. So location and setup is our biggest key along with patience. Again, predators are the biggest factor for us and keeping them away as long as possible is our best chance.

Your right. I stopped using them because where I live I'm surrounded by great deer food everywhere. We can put it out but can't hunt near it. But I'm agreeing with you and am setting some out tomorrow. I guess throw some steroids in the mix😂

Still believe that lucky buck is best. 60% salt attract deer. The selenium iodine and the slight amounts of cobalt, copper, manganese is a benefit. I put a trophy rock on top of it.

I’m not sure on that one. I would suggest reaching out to the DNR to make sure you are allowed to put out minerals. If you can, I would go with Antler King Trophy Deer Mineral and Power Rack.
