    That range by the edge of the wall/ entryway gave me flashbacks to every apartment I lived in when I lived in Chicago. One range didn't have any counters, or anything, for that matter, on either side, one had the range next to a window/ wall, and a third was right by the kitchen entryway.

    One of the major lessons I keep hearing is that you don't need to change your overall design just for the sake of the change.
    My galley works pretty well for me, but as I am getting a bit less spritely in my accumulating years and I'm having to make structural repairs, I think a few tweaks are in order, specifically a wall oven and cooktop instead of a range, a pantry across from the fridge instead of in the next room, and widening the access doors to the breakfast room and the dining room.
    An important design mistake you overlooked to this point (I'm paused at 40:00) is LIGHTING! Overhead, under-cabinet, night-lights under the toe-kicks if you're going in for a nosh in the middle of the night and you don't want to signal your actions to a galaxy on the other side of the universe....

    You were just talking about Missdrilling the holes for door handles. When we were getting refaced cabinets, I couldn't believe the installer wasn't using a template to ensure the holes hit the mark every time. Instead it was as if the guy was throwing darts. Thank goodness the company had a wonderful fixit guy who was an artist.

    Think of the kitchen as having two functions: work (cooking) and service (dishware, flatware, beverages). I place the dishwasher so that you move from entry to utensil drawer to dishwasher, to sink. It keeps the flow open when the cook is "at work", and it's safest and most efficient when more than one person is in the room. It's also why I always setup a coffee/tea station outside the work triangle.

    Our kitchen is also an L shaped. I opted for no dishwasher to have more drawer space for all of my cake decorating supplies. I agree that the dishwasher placement ( if you choose to have one) is too annoying if it collides with your oven door. Also, I noticed that there is no hidden compartment in your design for concealed trash and recycling bins so the the trash can will be out. There are so many things to consider and it can be so overwhelming to redesign a kitchen (or any space) that a visual rendering is so helpful. Thank you for your video.

    32:30 Yes and Amen on the fridge door won't open! I have that situation in my existing galley, and I'm going to a French door fridge so when it's time to pull the crisper drawers out I can just slide the fridge to the point that the right-hand door will open into the case opening to my breakfast room to allow for cleaning things out.
    Maybe that's why the fridge was where it was in the plan at 3:40?
    34:00 It may matter due to your dominant hand. I am right handed, have always found it convenient to have the dishwasher on the right and I'm planning my dish drawers to the right of the dishwasher.

    I'm running into a similar situation with my galley plan, but I plan to have countertop at 48 inches above the wall oven, a shared 15-inch-wide landing space between the oven and the cooktop, and a large open countertop across the aisle from the oven.

    A microwave over a wall oven is a great idea! I have a medical issue that means that a lot of times really crunchy or hard to digest food puts me in a lot of pain, I use my microwave so that I can use a stick blender to blend up what I need for my breakfast and cook it quickly in a mug cup because that's what works for my medical issues. It wouldn't be the same in an oven and would take longer, and because of my past medical history which I don't want to talk about sometimes when I need to eat it needs to be very fast. I respect your opinion. There can always be a reason someone wants something in their kitchen that maybe you have not thought of before as a designer.

    So I had to leave the live and rewatch later. I've got a question. Which is the better option? 1. keeping the sink under a window, which reduces counter space next to the range, and the fridge sticks out a few inches, increasing the walking path distance. 2. moving the sink onto a wall and having continuous counter space for range, sink, and fridge, but it reduces the upper cabinet storage and semi-blocks window view from certain angles. There are other windows. I've came up with two designs for my kitchen in a house I will sell eventually that I really like, but I can't decide which I like more and/or makes more sense.

    • @MTKDofficial
      @MTKDofficial  Před 2 lety +1

      Would depend on what those distances are? The value of moving the sink sounds like increased uninterrupted counter space. I'm a fan of sinks under windows generally speaking, so it would really have to make sense for me to do it.

    What are you thought ls on the importance of having uppers and lowers the same width? My original designer had them all lined up, which I liked. The person who is actually going to make them suggests even-sized cabinets on top to the corner, not lining up with the drawers and corner unit on the bottom.

    • @MTKDofficial
      @MTKDofficial  Před 2 lety

      It's not something I worry about. If the design works, it works. I usually prefer to be symmetrical with wall cabinets, because that's where your eye is drawn to. When dealing with corners, it is not easy to have both uppers and lowers all line up. I think the cabinet maker is on the right track.

    Should the space on each side of the canopy of my chimney hood range be equal and balanced since I have quartz backsplash all the way to the ceiling from the counter cook range? The cabinet people messed up in measuring and didn’t t realize the down pipe from the upper floor bathroom extends towards the canopy by extra 10 “ so he wants to extend the fake panel over towards the canopy to cover it. On the other side is a cabinet that goes up to the ceiling so there’s an imbalance in the spacing on each side of the canopy. What do you think could be done to make it look good?

    • @MTKDofficial
      @MTKDofficial  Před 2 lety

      Hmm. The fake panel is probably the best solution, if they can get it to look balanced. If it's slightly off, it may not be as noticeable unless you are looking at it head-on. Hopefully they can get it right.

      It's an interesting idea that is popular in some parts of the world. If it works for the individual, then I'd say go for it.
