Number 5, the fridge door should open to the left to access the landing area beside the sink.
That’s the only thing I saw wrong in that picture within 5 seconds and I saw it immediately. So I was thrown for a loop when it wasn’t an option! 😂
Hello from Germany. We measure the position of wall units differently: the distance to the wall units is based on the top edge of the worktop and not on the top edge of the floor. Depending on the thickness of the worktop and the height of the adjacent tall cabinets, this is between 48 and 54 cm. 🙂
Cool. Thanks for sharing. That approach makes sense.
Interesting. Thanks for sharing
We do the same in Brazil!
I’ve always heard 36” counter top and 18” to bottom of the uppers. Had to do math to get same answer as 54”
As a long time residential designer, I'm not asked to design many kitchens, however I am a extremely proficient cook. I did very well on the test and with a little more time I would have gotten 11 for 11. I have not designed a kitchen with lower cabinets in 25 years instead II spec as many drawers as I can. The CORNER cabinets were always a nightmare for me UNTIL YOU! ....Brilliant! I keep watching your site over and over so I won't forget....Looking forward to ALL of your lessons...and thank you, thank you...
Glad my content is helpful! Thanks so much for watching.
I got 8 of them. We are planning a new kitchen, even adding lots of square feet to the house to do it. My husband is a general contractor, but I have been studying a lot about kitchen design so we get it right. Lots of binge watching MTKD lately. Thank you for the great information.
Good job!!! I appreciate you watching my content. Hopefully it’s helpful
Same results and same future plan for our kitchen, (Australia). Also binge-watching these.. Gosh! I am such a copycat😄.
11 out of 11, but I'm a kitchen/bath designer by profession. Your video is very instructive and helpful to assist people to determine if they should hire a pro. Great work!!
Thanks April. I love hearing from other designers out there. Appreciate the comment!
That was a lot of fun. Since our kitchen remodel is done, it is too late to call in the experts. 😄
8 out of 10. Helps to have renovated a kitchen last year and watching MTKD alongside.
10/10 - a year of studying at MTKDU paid off.
You often need a refer panel to fasten a deep upper cabinet to. A deep upper is pretty heavy!
9 outta ten but also scored on the bonus! Woot! I'm looking at building a home in the next 2 years. So glad I found this channel!
A really neat test/quiz. Many thanks. Enjoy your commentary.
That last one about cabinet height was new to me. I'm a middler.
I scored 8 /10 + Bonus. Great video, thanks. Mark & Scott
middle of the road...
love learning the proper dimensions and clearance guidelines❤
9 out of 10 🎉 I’m designing our first kitchen now so I’m glad I scored well. That gives me hope.
Having only been researching into kitchen design for 4 months due to an upcoming gutting of our current kitchen into either HD Eurostyle or IKEA, I'm surprised to have gotten 11/11, however question 7 was a guess as I had no idea what those were and guessed by the name it was B so really its 10/11.
Such a fun video. As I have said before, you have much better spatial perception than I do. Anyway, 8/10--much better than it would have been if I weren't a MTKDer!! Thanks Mark!
haha. thanks so much. I'm training an army of kitchen designers. What for I'm not sure. lol
Really great video! We had fun playing along. Although there should have been an option D. for all them....dishwasher not integrated 😂
hahaha. I'll add that to the next one I do!
The dishwasher placement was so far from the sink in many. That threw me on a couple too!
100%! Gives me confidence to do my own design work.
Sweet!!
❤love intro music it makes me happy...missed 2 panneled fridge...mine is white and I love it...although i really knew the answer😊, and inset cabinets i love mine...and yup i knew the answer also just being ornery 😅😅this was fun
..love quizzes 🎉have a marvelous weekend with the family 🎉🎉🎉👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻thumbs up all day every day....keep this channel growing🤗
Wow - that was easy! I guess I’ve learned more than I thought 😊
9 of 10. Fun ….. and great way to help people think it through……
I got 8. I've learned a lot from your videos to get there. Your bonus question made me curious about my own kitchen because I'm 5'1" and find my cabinets too high. Going to measure that height now.
Thanks for the quiz!
Hey! Thanks for participating!!!
Fun Video - 8/10!
10/10! Great video
Nailed it!!
That was kinda fun!
Awesome. Glad it was fun.
With the help of multiple choice, I only got one wrong. Without that, I would have needed more time to decide but I think I would still get close to that. My husband and I designed and built our last home together, and the one problem I had was that every thing was quite spread out. The work flow was pretty smooth, just spread out. We are now renovating a mobile home, and the kitchen will be much smaller, so I think that problem will be automatically improved. This was an interesting exercise....thanks for doing this.
Cool, glad it was interesting!! Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!
Nine out of ten baby! The one I missed was the the inset cabinet doors. I guess I need to learn the difference between inset and full overlay.😅
Not bad! lol
8/10 enjoyed this video thank you
2:12 *It's got a lazy suzan in the corner!!!* lol
I was hoping no one would notice. lol
The wife and I complimented each other. 9/10 each. Thanks, Mark.
Awesome score. Good job on the team work.
7 / 11. I knew that 54" as I installed my previous kitchen & my current, which I'm redoing is too low! I'm using the ikea planner though this time, as I'm trying a few things, including tricky corners, that I've not had to deal with before! Your videos are great! Thanks!
Awesome! Thanks for watching. Glad they are helpful!
7 out of 11😮
9 out of 10 although, full disclosure, some I didn't get in the 5 seconds but did from the options given! I missed the one about the style of door!
got 8 + bonus point so I think I've learned a thing or two from your videos. would probably have got one more if I understood the question correctly
The only reason I did well on the quiz? Watching MTKD videos and lives! Thanks, Mark😄
10 for 10!
Actually, 11 for 11, forgot about the bonus question. It’s amazing the kitchens that are often designed by people who rarely step foot in them.
Hi Mark, Thank you 9 out of 10, but missed the bonus (I shouldn't be calculating in my head at 11:25 at night... ) Happy Father's Day!
Thanks so much. And thanks for watching!
Q5 - The fridge door should open from right to left - handle should be on the right side.
I probably would’ve scored higher if I had just C for all of them. Guess I won’t be on Jeopardy anytime soon
But it does make you appreciate you’re kitchen designer! Have a good Father’s Day!
Thanks Phil!! I'm here for you, no worries! Have a great weekend!
9/10! I missed #5 because I took too long deciding. As you explained the answers, I thought 🤦♀️that's how my stove/dishwasher live...I should have gotten that! And as I went back to review my test, Professor Tobin, I also thought the refrigerator is similar to mine, not on the end (and I thought it maybe should be switched). But my pantry door or the refrigerator door, either placement wouldn't matter...the open door completely blocks our pathway into the kitchen on one side. Sadly, our kitchen reno keeps getting further and further away. The Lord's teaching me to be content right now. Decluttering hard to make it work. No toaster oven or air fryers in this home -- they take up too much space. Missed the bonus. 😔 In 5 seconds all I could think of was 36" and that wasn't an option so my brain froze and couldn't decide. I think 36" is the unit height? Obviously not the height from the floor. All I could think of with your options was: is that to the bottom or the top of the upper cabinets? Obviously to the bottom. 60" top is WAAAY too short, lol!
Well, that's a pretty impressive score! And yes, it's good to learn how to be content in all things. But, let's pray the kitchen reno happens sooner than later. lol
solid 7
Nine out of ten, and I didn't notice the hinge on the corner cabinet.
My personal opinion but Devol Kitchens is a cabinet maker in the UK and they have some of the prettiest inset cabinet door cabinets that I've seen and aren't afraid of color. You can see the full frame around the doors and that the doors are flush with the front of the cabinets. I got 10 out of 10 but missed the bonus...lol...
Inset cabinets make a really pretty kitchen, the biggest complaint I've heard about them though are the scratches and nicks when bumping things into the face frame, darker colors are easier to hide the new imperfections but can be noticeable.
I'll have to check them out. I really love the inset look as well!
B. A. C. B. A. ?.C. A. B. A. A. C. ? Thanks Mark because of your videos I have learned a lot.😊
I missed appliances being too close, the fridge panel (we don’t have one), and need landing area for sink….I don’t like sinks in the island so picked that….I am surprised that there wasn’t a question about the placement of the microwave above the stove top, lol. It’s definitely common sense for a lot of these. I loved the bonus question too. 7/10 plus bonus. Not terrible… good quiz.
Thanks. I had fun making this too. Might do another on countertops.
I don't have a fridge panel either nor does one fit by merely a couple of inches. 😟
8/11 (but I stand by no panel on fridges and the metric system 😂😂😂) Thanks, you are one of the reasons I marked at all
Haha. Awesome. Thanks for watching.
Yeah I got all 10
I got nine correct plus one more which was a guess so I won't include that to make ten! lol
Hello :) I scored a sad 7, but I didn't understand two questions and I will search for the meaning of "inset"...
To me, in the picture n.5 the fridge opening side is worse than the corner cabinet's, even more as you open the fridge all the time while in a corner cabinet you would put the things you use the less.
Besides, I would never guess that the fridge needs his housing and I wanted to take it out when the pictures set it framed in the furniture!
In Italy, in full cabineted (?) kitchens we usually have integrated fridges deep like the countertop, with a panel matching the cabinets, that look very similar to the pantry cabinets, therefore "your" big fridges, which are becoming more common here although still rare, look enough gigantic on their own without protruding out of the furniture like dogs too big for their kennels.
Don't be upset! I just wanted to give a feedback from another established - elsewhere - way of looking at kitchens.
Thank you for your lessons and please forgive my bad English.
I also got 8, seems to be a common result. More tough for us metric people too.
Sorry about that. Didn't think to add metric until the video was uploaded.
@MTKdofficial have you done a show on DIY Epoxy countertops? I'd be very interested in your thoughts on that topic and perhaps recommendations for products.
I haven't yet, but I'm very interested in attempting to make one. It'd be nice to get first hand experience with it.
@@MTKDofficial I think I will give it a shot on in a small kitchen. A carrera marble look. The only negative I can identify is the potential of 'yellowing' on light colors caused by cheap epoxy.
WOO HOO! I’m a pro! Ten out of ten! And I’m not just saying that so I get the Mark Tobin mug (I do get a plaque though, right)?
Now for the bonus points:
On question 1, that window is way too small - and too high. Nobody is going to reach up over the sink and faucet to try and open a double hung window that high!
On question 5, the fridge door opens the wrong way - it should open so that the contents are easily accessed from the sink and stove side.
On question 9, where would YOU put the microwave in this kitchen? I’m thinking of putting it where that upper drawer in the base cabinet next to the fridge is right now but should a microwave and the stove be right next to each other? The other option would be to split up that tall pantry - have lower pull out drawers, an open area at countertop height for the microwave and then upper double doors with pullout shelves.
haha. Awesome! I love the bonus points you added. For the microwave, I would put it in a base cabinet, but I like the pantry idea too. You're plaque is in the mail.
Should the bottom cabinets be installed on top.of the flooring or before?
Before in most cases.
I got 8/10. I also got the bonus question. My observation skills failed me with questions 6 (a silly mistake as my second guess happens to be the correct answer), and 10.
Awesome!
8/10! Brain farted the 1st question, but didn't mind the fridge panel. Couldn't answer the inset cabinet because of the render. When's the next quiz?
haha. Glad you liked it. I have another one in the works. Might do one on countertops too.
Pro 👍
Debating between counter to wall cabinet height of 17.5" or 21" - what are the considerations other than aesthetics or height of users?
17.5. You'll find 21" to be low. 18" is the sweet spot.
11/11
Bam!
I missed one. I didn't get a good look at the rendering and guessed that the cabinets were full overlay, 'cause I didn't see the shadow lines. Oh, well. was close!
Maybe that rendering wasn’t fair. Thanks for watching.
7 out of 11, but some I missed I would have caught in 2D or if given more than 5 seconds.
Got them all, but one, which I disagree with you about. I have never been rich enough to totally redo a kitchen. But I have years of using kitchens. Real person who cooks everything from scratch.
Many kitchens were never designed, but simply installed or grew with changing times. In other words who ever built them just shoved things anywhere.
Also most kitchen are not as big as the ones in your examples. I am in my retirement home now. Needed to replace the fridge. It was pre 1992 and was falling apart. Even with white duc tape holding it together.
It had a wall on one side and a counter on the other. Trying to find any thing to fit was impossible. To fit the height, the fridge was only half the width. So massive empty space. So I had to take out the upper cupboard and buy a fridge with the two doors. One opens completely and the other almost. It was the best I could do and I was fully aware that I would have that problem. It has wheels, so you can pull it out for a proper cleaning where you remove shelves.
So if I were designing a kitchen I would not build anything that restricted the size of the fridge. They change drasticly all the time. And someday in the future someone will be swearing at you, even if they do not know who you are.
Not ever going to replace this kitchen. It is actually made of solid wood. Oak. Which means it will still be solid 50 years from now.
Have a friend with top of the line modern kitchen cabinets. They were falling apart after less than 5 years. Imagine how bad the cheaper ones are.
The kitchen in my last home had the dishwasher put beside the sink, normal. But it was also right up against one of the few cabinets in the kitchen. That kitched was from 64, so built when no one but people who could hire help could afford dishwashers.
Moreover the stove had to be 10 inches away from the edge of the cabinets to get the door down on the dishwasher.
When I finally had some money I sanded the cabinets with a hand sander. Bought a weird side be side double drawer thing at the re store, removed the drawers, put it in sideways, and it was perfect for baking pans and cutting boards. We replaced the countertop, and had it extend over the new part. No, not expensive countertops. Laminate. Not the cheapest, but no marble, etc. Real people with real budgets.
Painted the cabinets all the same.
Did not fix anything for the cupboard, but did help with the stove and the dirt gap.
The fan no longer was directly over the stove, but close enough.
I bought a pull out insert for the pantry cupboard at Lee Valley. Heavy duty. Made a world of difference. Money well spent.
And when we had replaced the stove hood several years before we bought one with a built in microwave. I have heard designers complain about these, but in a small kitchen, which most are, these are counter space savers.
The entire reno came in at 3, 200. Made the kitchen much more functional. And I actually had 2 small spots of counterspace where I could work.
I also took an old microwave stand, got for free, and made it fit in for the other side of the stove. Same paint and counter. The under cabinets were for recycling, and because the stove had 2 outlets I was able to set it up as a coffee area.
So many new stoves lack any outlets. And most old kitchens also lack them.
Sounds like you have made the most out of the kitchen and it functions great! Can't ask for much more than that. I appreciate your input and for watching!
Best thing about these views is NO MICROWAVE! YAYYYYYYY!
Plenty of room for Chef Mike over the cooktop.
Agree😂😊 no microwave
haha. not a one!
Do you have a video discussing #7
Not specifically, but I talk on my channel about all these.
Oh that Overlay vs Inset question was evil 😭
I had to through one nasty question into the mix. Lol
Scored 9 out of 10, (inset?)🙄but I also don’t think the cupboards opened correctly on either side of the oven🤔
I must be a noob. My first answer was Blue, then green, then blue again, haha. That's all I could come up with in 5 seconds.
11 out of 11 but I take issue with question #5, the hinging on the frig.door is wrong in this layout and makes for no landing zone when you open the frig.door !! It makes a difference, seriously so check to see if the frig doors are reversible or set up for your design before you spend your hard earned money !!
Good point. I should have paid more attention to the fridge. lol
Dang it! Only got 9 of 11
Not bad! Lol
I got 9 out of 11, did not get the terminology of the hinges and the one with the side panel of the fridge, I did not see it nessesary for few resons, cost saving, easer to move and clean, easier to maintan the fridge, especially if there is an island.
Another mistake - the door on the fridge hinges the wrong way.
This is just marginal to the test but, in my experience, if the person that washes the dishes and charges the dishwasher, is left or right handed, it is ergonomically better to put the dishwasher at the left or the right of the sink. And, if possible, the dishwasher would have to be as close as possible to the sink because otherwise, the floor between sink and dishwasher becomes a marsh.
11. But...i cheated. I lost my ass on some builds and flips so i went to the school of hard knocks
None of the kitchens had a built-in chef. Who do we see about that?? 😛
I'll add that to my next one. lol
Only missed 2, quibble about microwaves, why kitchen designers ever put microwaves over the range is beyond me. One, you are lifting something hot down instead of up or across. Two the range could be hot and you risk burning yourself there.
Just for this comment, you get an automatic 100%
No such thing as too many drawers
That was a given. lol
