- This week on The Sentimental Car Club we are working on our 1988 Ford Escort MK4 Cabriolet. We need to see if the engine can be turned freely and service ready for starting, but will everything go according to plan?

Good job you two, keep at it ! Everyday is a learning day and pay no attention to the negative lot.
Thanks for the message of support! We're definitely learning a lot!
Use a ring spanner and give it a good tap with a hammer. Works well on sump plugs. The closer to the bolt head the better. You're doing an amazing job. Love watching. Marc from Australia 🇦🇺
Great teamwork peeps. Really enjoying this.
Glad you enjoy it! Thank you!
This will be an interesting series to watch. I’m a lifelong Ford fan, so to me any restoration is a good thing.
With the sump plug, part of the problem is application. When using a ratchet for this, the head of the ratchet needs to be supported. One hand on the head, one hand on the handle. With both hands on the far end of the handle, physics means that the force is never applied well to the bolt itself, and will always want to twist off. A box end wrench is best for this application. If you need more force, just use a pipe to extend the wrench.
Something else that might help is an impact set. A simple manual impact is fairly inexpensive, and simple to use.
Keep fighting the good fight. Looking forward to the next episode.
Thank you so much for the support! The plug is off now, but we definitely have a lot to learn!
Fusebox and battery tray repair panels are available as these areas are a common area for rot on a mk4.
Yeah, I’m definitely in the market for those 😂
I bet it turns over these were great engines
the under battery tray rot is real 24:07 I Had a rs turbo a D reg and that had the same problem that is going to be a big repair but should be worth it in the long run if you are going for a full restore
It seems to be such a common problem, will definitely get a new one!
But it's not just the tray it's the bulkhead and inner wing that has probably rotted too but like I say if you do go for a full restore it will be worth it
Just bang a old socket on the sump plug, work every time all the time
Heat the sump plug up it will break the seize
With those rounded bolt tool I have never had a problem that sump plug should of tried a 6 sided socket on it first I have a set of adapters which change the 3/4 inch drive to your 1/2 drive then get a big bar or extension to first turn it I have never had a problem with them is my go to tool for rounded bolts as for rust many replacement panels for these it's a ford they rust
I think a lot of people would have had it off straight away but for some reason it defeated us!
@@SentimentalCarClub stick with it sometimes it is worth just walking away from it and then going back with a fresh head
Try and get the car in a dry area rather than moving around in muck and drill that sump plug out.
Indoor area is pending! Almost ready to move in!
Is this an act?
No, we really are THAT bad! Everyone’s got to start some where, we are just starting with no skill, no common sense and no research! 🤣
Have you heard of a jumper pack, why are you removing the wheel as before just using a flat headed screwdriver
The wheel/ignition/stalks were in pieces when we bought it, so it needs reinstating!
4th gear and turn wheels the same way
It probably would have worked if it was done the correct way…!
These cars rotted quicker than a TR7!!!!!!!
Hey I had a tr7 and the tr7 would have caught fire because of dodgy wiring long before rot became a problem lol , but if you fix the wiring tr7’s rot really bad best l t them burn first save you a fortune
This is what you get for trying to restore a ford it's rotten in the normal places I no that feeling as I've been there myself for a friend but welding is my job and if you can't weld or no someone who can help you out it's going to expensive but if you going to stick to it then good luck with being a cabriolet they rot worse you need to get the body completely stripped back every thing off the engine going to be your last problem you need to find every welding job let's just say it's going to be bad and you need to put it in a big shed or barn in the dry to work on it
Indoor space is pending! The plan when we are inside is to strip it, but we wanted to see if we can get any life out of it - just for curiosity! We’re having fun with it 😂
its so painfull watching you two sell the car give up and do something else that your good at
Omg.. another one, if it’s too painful don’t watch it, move on and keep your negativity. Over 4k view.. I think the majority find them very entertaining. Not seeing much on your YT channel.. put your money where your mouth is and see if you can do better.. doubt it tho.
The both of you haven’t got a clue, it’s embarrassing to watch.
🤣🤣 yep, that’s why we’re filming it! 🤣🤣
Omg… chill. These two are so entertaining. Big kudos for two complete amateurs giving it a go. I’ll keep watching.
Personally I think that you are too sentimental, it's a rot box and a money pit and will cost you more than it will ever be worth.
Isn’t that what sentimentality is about? Agreed it’s a rot box and a money pit - but we didn’t buy it to make money, it’s a bit of fun/a challenge and we will hopefully learn a lot along the way! 😁
