I honestly never seen Mr. Popo as a racist character. In a world full of humans and talking animals I just figured he was an alien.
He's actually a genie, which gives at least some logic to the 4Kids edit.... assuming anyone in 4Kids had enough brain cells to rub together to think of that in the first place.
Aurkus23 yea they made it look racist by changing it I'm pre sure 98% of people didn't find Mr popo a racist character untill 4kids changed it
Yes. Indeed me to but I just remembered about black face.
He's technically a deity
The reason why you never noticed it is because you don't understand racist history in Asian countries.
Popo went Super Saiyan Blue before it was cool.

congratulations, you won the internet.
Everybody who's black never thought anything was racist with Mr.Popo. Most black folk i knew mostly associated Piccolo as a black character.
icetrey92 I'm black and I never found Mr. Popo offensive ever since I first watch Dragon Ball back in the 90s. I assumed he was modeled after something from Asian folklore nobody complained about this character back then and no one has complained about this character now.
"associated piccolo as a black character"
holy shit you too?
For me it was all namekians, glad I wasn't the only weirdo that thought the same.
icetrey92 same. I thought piccolo was the 'black guy' and popo and all the animal-people and dinosaurs were just part of the weird show lol
Laughing Octopus I wonder how common this sentiment is. Any particular reason for the association of piccolo as black?
I'm black and I simply thought he was an alien. Dragon Ball has talking animals, dragons, dinosaurs and Gremlins(Garlic Jr is a gremlin right?). Racist blackface was the farthest thing from my mind when I seen Popo. Also yes on the namekians being black-ish.

The blue colored popo hurts my eyes...
Blue Popo is horrible, lol. I'm glad it's only FUNimation dubbing it nowadays.
It was the FUNimation dub that aired on 4-Kids, they just changed Popo's appearence.
FUNimation doesn't censor it (as far as i know), but the distributor who takes it to TV (4Kids) does.
If you watch the DVD/BD release of Dragon Ball Z Kai it will be uncensored (maybe, don't know about the sexual jokes)
Yes I hate that they made mr. Popo blue it doesn't look right
When Vortexx, Toonzai's Saban-owned successor, aired DBZK, they continued to re-color Mr. Popo, except kept his lips red and made him a shade of blue that stuck out less. The editing also got arguably worse, with large portions of episodes sloppily removed, creating bizarre jump cuts.
I say again the NAACP would boycott!
Blast you, 4Kids! You turned Mr. Popo into a smurf!

Man, I'm so glad here in Latin America we've got to see Anime uncensored (with some rare exceptions). I still remember when I was 14 and visited the US for the first time and realize that most (if not all) of the anime there was heavily censored. I was like, "what the heck happened to this scene... And that one... And that other one?!"
The reruns currently airing on Azteca 7 in Mexico rn contain more censorship than the original broadcast versions :(
I didn't realize Mr popo was apparently an offensive stereotype until the internet became a thing. Up until then I thought he was a djinn inspired character. But that's me being European

As a kid, I never once thought Popo was supposed to be a racial stereotype. He was just a funny looking character that was hella strong so if I got anything out of Popo, it was that appearances can be deceiving. I'm glad recent outings haven't been changing Popo. He just doesn't look right otherwise.

Damn! They Jynxed him.
Any black folk around here think this is racist?
no not at all.
tho purple Jynx looks better tbh.
Japan never had periods of enslaving and discriminating against black people. So I highly doubt the artist drew him to make black people bad-especially since he is a „good“ character. I understand seeing and reading this in the US might feel you uncomfortable.
I don't. Mr Popo is literally a character with black skin all over, not a character in black face. Not sure what the real story of Jynx's creation is but I always thought of her as an opera-singer troupe due to the bust, the hair, and voice attacks, never once thought of her as a "racist" symbol. Too many people saw something they chose not to look into deeply and made a mess of things, and these same choice-people gripping about Mr Popo and Jynx do nothing about real world racial injustice
Sigure Rangiku
There's a video made by Gaijin Goomba somewhere on CZcams where he says that Jinx is likely based off of a Japanese folk tale. (I would put a link to it, but I'm on my phone right now).
I have seen that video, but some still link her to kogal culture which I do not see. Whatever the case there was nothing racist behind the design of Jynx, she just happens to be a black pokemon. I would hate for people to find out Umbreon's original name, they would go crazy.
I'm glad I never saw the blue Mr. Popo on TV. It looks lazy and very poorly done.
Unbelievable that these people know fuck all about the mythologies these characters are based upon but claim to be culturally sensitive.

I freaking hate everyone who makes a fuzz saying Jinx is racist. mostly because it's EXTREMELY ignorant of the true inspirations of the character. she's made to resemble a Yama-uba. a Japanese Yoai that has no relation to black people whatsoever, but because AMERICANS think they're the only ones that matter, they instantly associated something that was supposed to be from Japanese folklore to their own racist interprations
OttoeCamn people are dumb thats why
not everyone knows Japanese folklore though.
OttoeCamn I think if an sjw walked up to Jynx and Popo just to apologise to them about misrepresentation of Black people, Jynx and Popo would just look at each other and say, "What is this weird human talking about? What is Black culture? A fighting style? A Pokemon attack? We don't get it.".
exactly. they don't know it, and rather than educating them on the matter, they connect it to the american Blackface. THAT is precisely what pissed me off.

I never thought as Mr Popo as a racist character when I was younger, it was until someone told me that he was a racist stereotype, that guess I kinda saw what they meant, but I still didn't see him as a racist character. I forget, is he even human, with those ears of his? there's a talking pig and a cat after all, and I don't recall ever seeing someone else like him, or as dark as him.
I always thought namekians as the black people for the dbz universe for some reason, despite there being regular black humans on the show, lol, I was a dumb kid.
I remember my Dad coming in the living room while I was watching DBZ and understandably wanted to see more Black characters in these cartoons I was watching and he asked "Who's the Black character in this show?" Then he saw Picollo and said "Oh that one's definitely the black one". I guess it's a universal conclusion! ^_^;

Why America have so many sjw's?
The people in charge found out long ago that indoctrinating guilt into young people creates obedience. Depending on what kind of indoctrinated guilt it also causes racial division, self hatred, and fear. In a nutshell, we are not only programmed to be good little servants but we also can not unite as a people for any agenda that is not approved by you guessed it the people in charge. It's not just America though. Look at what has happened to Europe. We all live in this false reality created entirely by other people. It's sickening.
Chris S. Couldn't say it better myself. If anything these people are just like darkseid. If they cannot control you then they will destroy your life. As a black man I will never be a slave to those who would try to shame me for being who I am.
LuckoDaStars Studios, good for you and I agree with you 100 percent. No one should be forced to fill any presumptuous roles from birth or be forced guilt upon them for simply existing. Yet I see those influences in the media and from people with positions of power all the time. It's like they want to put shackles on people's minds by feeding them this negativity. Its like psychological warfare to keep everyone divided and conquered.
Nothing to do with SJWs.
@@faiyez what are you talking about
I had great respect for the Guardian of the lookout , no matter the colour.
I would have liked an explanation as to why Akira Toriyama designed him to look this way. I read that Popo is designed after an ancient mythological god, not a racist stereotype.
Also, Mr. Popo seems to be one of the most powerful characters in DB. He can seemingly handle anyone.
he's a fucking genie
Your actually right because in the show me popo is a deite just like kami
Like really, if Popo had went to Namek the Frieza Saga would've ended pretty quickly.
I mean it was obviously bad writting from Akira's part or the animation, but Popo took on two Super Saiyan at the same time. The same two who fought against Android 18 with a Handicap. And he did it without breaking a sweat.
Hell he probably could've defeated Cell's 1st form.
I mean it can be both you know? saiyans are designed to look like humans and have tails like monkeys..why is it so hard to fathom that yeah he took imagery from genies and blackface minstrels? Actually it shouldn't be hard at all seeing how toriyama uses puns and names his characters after food, appliances and disney characters. he fuses genres and cultures literally all the time..

It is pointless to try to censor his appearance since there are so many Dragon Ball Xenoverse series player made Majin characters who look just like him. No one can escape Mister Popo in the end...just as no one can escape moral busy bodies. Block them from the Right and new ones pop up and attack from the Left.

Btw, here in Italy neither Mr Popo or Mr Satan were censored, though there was a bit of confusion with the original series, as King Piccolo here in the italian adaptation of the anime was called "Al Satan" for some reason, instead of "Grande Mago Piccolo" like in the manga (meaning "Great Wizard Piccolo", which could be a mistranslation of the "mao" part, confusing it for "maho" which means magic or magician/wizard).

I don't mind Jynx was internationally changed purple early on, but I really hated the updated appearance for Virtual Console ports of Pokemon Snap and especially Pokemon Yellow. In Yellow the black on Jynx's face and hands are replaced with purple, giving it an additional color in its palette, making it the only Pokemon with the most colors for that port. It just looks ugly in a lazy way and ruins the limited color palette that game originally had, black, white, and two other colors. Gold, Silver and Crystal also changed Jynx's color for the original western release, but atleast it was neatly done sticking to just four colors. Though it did change the yellow in Jynx's hair to just white in order to change the face because of there being a color limit. The western palette of G,S&C is now used in the Japanese VC versions.

You know what's b******* is that in the late 90s Jinx get censored and mr. Popo has been around since the 80s and doesn't get censored until after the series has been long over and the series has been released on VHS and DVD already. It's too late to make mr. Popo blue.
Well, things changes because of political correctness.
They screwed up Mr. Popo's character design. He is stated to be a type of god, and may get his power from absorbing surrounding light thereby making his skin EXTREMELY black since no visible light leaks out. I'm serious.
*insert TFS quote here*
It's obvious that the original character design was inspired by 'golly-wog' imagery (a lot of djinn-based art in the early-mid 1900's adopted this style as it was a lazy universal depiction of a black person) however the creator being Japanese (and in a time before the internet) would not have known the historical western context of such imagery as it was used in all sorts of household products and post-war advertising. It's just one of those accidental awkward situations, with no bad intent behind it, caused by our culture becoming more enlightened to the errors of history (which is always good thing).
There are always elegant creative solutions to these problems, that can make the character and the show more interesting (without erasing him) if the writers ever wanted to do something about it. For example they could explore that fact that Popo is a Djinn and have other genie show up as antagonists, it could turn out that Popo is one of six cosmic entities that when fully together exist to end the multi-verse. Popo is the one defector that stops them from accomplishing their purpose. This could be a major saga and end up forcing Popo to reveal his true omnipotent (and more traditional-looking) Blue Djinn form, having adopted his current form as a disguise to hide from his past and vowing never to reveal himself as he considers himself a threat to all existence and that the other genie will discover him and collectively end all realities. The saga could end with Popo sacrificing himself to help defeat the other Djinn, however he is reincarnated (by the same all-powerful force that reincarnated Buu) as a cross between his favoured disguise and his true djinn form.
And Mr Popo said to Blue Popo...
"Prepare to be assimilated"
In Italy, Piccolo Senior is called Al Satan! :D
Anybody here from Dorkly's newly uploaded DBZ video , things that don't make sense in DBZ?.

Japan doesn't have the same historical and ongoing oppression and segregation of africans (or a history of actual blackface in media) so this isn't actually racist. That said, kids and moms (and , going by the comments, plenty of other people as well) aren't very good at understanding context so I think this instance of censorship is unfortunate but understandable on the part of the publishers.
"ongoing oppression and segregation of Africans", because it's so bad for Africans in America that none of them want to go back to Africa, or the fact most Africans will do anything to come to America, I guess Africans must just love to be oppressed lol.

Sigure Rangiku
Yeah...
Also, I'm pretty sure people in Japan don't even know black face is a thing, so even if it did kind of look like it it's pretty ignorant to say that it's racist..
Agreed. I will never understand why Japan, and other countries, are held to the racist issues of the US by the US.
Mr. Popo & Jynx were originally designed like that, whereas Jerry and other American cartoon characters dressed up in Black Face. So I don't really see how people can call their designs Black Face. That's like telling a black person to stop being racist because their face is reminding them of something racist White people did.
I've always hated how parents' for their children lead to these irrational and embarassing reactions. And censoring beer? Lol. I'm sure their kids have never seen them drinking before...
