I’ve run five marathons. Every other distance (5K, 10K, Half) I always have big kicks in the end of the race, but the marathon is a very different animal. If you’re trying to break a certain goal time, and you’re banking on the final 3 miles to be your fastest splits - haha, good luck.
Your cardio could be at immaculate levels and you could still easily “bonk” at miles 23-26 without warning from lack of hydration and glycogen depletion. A lot of times from no fault of your own. It’s the most unpredictable part of the race and even elite professionals blow out after mile 20. To plan a race around negative splits at the end just seems laughably overconfident.
Judging by this guy’s running motion and body type (big arms/shoulders, large upper body), I find it hard to believe that he’s running negative splits the last 3 miles of marathons.
You should absolutely “bank” fast miles in the easier parts of the course where the elevation is flat and/or the spectators and atmosphere is more electric and motivating, and also while your body is still feeling strong, and your carbohydrate stores are high.
No need to burn out, but going out slow is a big gamble just because of how uncertain the end of marathons are.

5 - 10 seconds slower than goal pace. 1. Train faster than goal pace, so GP feels easy 2. Just warm up before your race. If you can't at least maintain your GP, then your GP is too fast.
