James Bond is known for his suits and his gadgets. Sometimes Bond will take it casual and forego neckwear. There are examples from the franchise of the right way to do so, then there's Timothy Dalton's License to Kill outfit.

His anger toward Sanchez is no excuse to dress below his normal standards 😂😂😂 bruh
I think you can forgive Bond in "Licence to Kill" because the less fussed over style is meant to reflect just how out of character and ruthlessly pragmatic this Bond has become.
That makes sense after Sanchez fed Felix to the sharks, but Bond's poor style already started before that happened.
Perhaps, but I see it as more a continuation of Dalton's studied disregard/ less formal moments in "The Living Daylights", plus, in LTK he was on holidays, with friends, in a less formal culture and didn't have to dress situationally. His wedding attire as spot on, but the gun he was prepared to take on an international flight was probably a case of overdressing...
With his first suit in the film that's pictured here, it's a dark grey suit meant for business, and he's at the airport for business to be on his way to Istanbul. Bond always wears a tie in such a situation. If he was dressing for holiday he would be in a tan suit without a tie like in The Living Daylights.
As for the wedding attire, it's certainly spot on for an American wedding in the 1980s. It wouldn't have been Bond's taste as someone who prefers traditional British attire, but Felix rented it, not Bond!
I think you missed my point that there's a part of the film at the start before he has gone rogue and is still on official business. When he puts on the grey suit, he's on business and about to get on a flight to Istanbul for a mission. Bond would ordinarily be wearing a tie (and a bespoke suit) for business.
I think what Matt Spaiser is saying is that Bond was supposed to be going to Istanbul when instead he goes to Felix's house. Remember when M confronts Bond at Ernest Hemingway's house, he says "You were supposed to be at Istanbul last night."
I really like this Bond series! Another interesting topic could be "Bond casual wear"
A bowtie is my preferred summer neckwear with a suit. It maintains a certain degree of formality while keeping me cool. If I do choose to not wear any neckwears, however, an OCBD in bold pattern or a cutaway spread collar denim will be my picks to wear a suit without a tie.
nice video..thank you
Jon's Bond is back! Wow, I feel like I got a wish granted! This new series is highly enjoyable. Thank you, Jon! And thank you, Matt!
Huge thanks to Matt Spaiser! So great to do this with him!
The Kavalier Yes, thank you, Matt, too. Finding and putting together all those clips must have taken quite some time and effort!
Good video, interesting and informative. I've been an opponent of ties for a while now, but you make a very good case for the position that a city suit looks weird and sloppy without one.
Meanwhile, a suggestion: The French word "sans" is not pronounced "SANZ." It's pronounced something like "SAh," probably closest to the first half of the word "SAUna," but a bit more nasal (naturally, because it's French). You're clearly a knowledgeable guy. Feel free to add this to your repertoire of knowledge.
I never really thought about it but that makes sense. Certain suits look cool without ties and I never knew why. On the other hand, I have always disliked a sport coat with jeans.
Coooooooooooool ❤
Im looking for a trench coat that looks comfortable yet sophisticated. I personally prefer the 3/4 length ones for personal comfort. Is this a bad idea?
I have always been a Bond fan. Enjoyed this one dude! Thx
Thank you Philip!
Kavalier, what do you think James Bond should wear in the next movie??? thanks for your work.
Anything but the horrid Tom Ford suits he had to wear in Spectre.
A dress. Come on, Ms Anderson!
Naomi Harris is the best candidate for a token female Bond. Ticks some other key boxes, as well.
Only a chav with lower class taste would say that the Tom Ford suits are horrid.
Are you going to do a review of Suitsupply's Made to Measure program at their brick & mortar stores?
I've done their MTM shirting but not suits yet. Not in a city with a SS store so it's challenging.
Nerdwriter Menswear Edition
Probably the highest compliment I could ask for!
The Kavalier Much Obliged
NOTE: Unfortunately Rodger Moore's Bond is the MOST Out Date Style of ALL. Because of his 1970's "Bell-Bottom-Pants"; oversized ties and collars; and Jackets that fit more like "Leisure-Suits"; his style simply doesn't hold up well over time. Thus you couldn't wear his clothing today, and look stylish. I have tossed nearly all of my clothing from the 70's. I could be wrong, but I don't see that style coming back anytime soon? What say you folks?
Why does Bond sometimes tie his tie way too short???
So is wearing a sport coat with no tie a good fashion move by bond or no
It's definitely a good move!
Love this Bond series, keep them coming :) What's your opinion on wearing ties without jackets? Some guys manage to pull it off well (those skinny guys with their skinny ties) but where does is stand in terms of formality? Would love a comment or video on this.
Just think of the pink tie and shirtsleeves in "Diamonds are Forever". The all-time low of Bond style.
He had a suit jacket with that shirt and tie, but he removed it because of the heat (and to save the production money so they wouldn't have to shoot multiples takes of a suit jacket getting wet in the pool).
It says something about the power of Bond's style that, amongst all the disastrous things that were just plain wrong with Diamonds are Forever, the most heinous is a pink tie that couldn't hide Mt Connery's overlarge belly.
Im the 200th like
Typically four in hand knots/half windsor?
It's not no tie related, but I just want to mention that at one time in Casino Royale, Bond wears his tux at the poker table without his jacket. Only the shirt and bowtie. This always bothered me.
Not wearing a tie with a tailored business suit looks sloppy 😟
Just to put this out there, women like me enjoy Bond movies and their fashion too. So your viewers aren’t all “gents.”
Very true. On my non-men’s style videos I try to use gender neutral I.e car, sous vide, luggage 🙂
The Kavalier Righto! And I’m just sayin’ that you may have non-male viewers even for videos that may be related to men’s fashion. Anyhow, keep up the good work, mate!
Ashley Bischoff Mate?! Hardly ladylike either.
@@stevemcgill2278 lol now that you mention it, i never heard a woman say mate before
Bonds rules of dress is Insignificant....Bonds anti establishment, and Fleming and Dalton knew it better than anyone.
I think open necks are fine without a tie. In just about any situation. I think it depends more on the man, and his style. 🤷🏻♀️
Be comfortable and confident, and you’ll never be out of style.
Nobody wore the double breasted blazer like Rodger Moore.
Agreed! St. John Smythe!
Many Captains of Industry should take an example to Mr. Bond ! Dark blue and dark grey suits without ties is a big NO-NO ! ... and as you say: boring.
James Bond is overrated. The older ones don't even look good in the modern context.
What do you mean? The fashion or the quality of the movie itself?
Talking about fashion and JB in pop culture; but I don't see why we have to stop there. People should stop idolizing James Bond because "James Bond". The many characters of James Bond may have pulled off some good shit; but that doesn't mean everything he does is something to be replicated and analyzed as though it was perfection.
El Chupacabra True, but Bond interpreted as a male fantasy since his debut in the 50s in the novels of Fleming, depicted a modern lifestyle of the very best. And as the years kept rolling the very best kept being updated. The people who write his novels and make his books make a special effort to make Bond look universally in fashion and good. Wherever you're from or how you look, Bond, if done right, should be the man you want to be.
