James Bond is one of the world's most famous fictional characters. His style is admired, copied, and adored by men around the world. Even though there are entire blogs and channels dedicated to the style of James Bond, it's not that easy to copy his look because on the one hand, you need a lot of dough, on the other hand, you may not look like James Bond.
Just because an outfit works well for 007, doesn't mean it will work well for you, and your style, and your surroundings.
At the Gentleman's Gazette, we think it makes more sense to figure out what style rules Bond abides by and then use those to adapt them to your unique situations rather than just copying him to the tee.
Even though we think it's impossible to distill James Bond’s style down to one single concept, we came up with 11 rules that we think he lives by.
Number one, he respects the power and style of clothes. Obviously, Bond is an intense character who's more a man of action rather than words. As such, his clothes are an important part of who he is and how he wants to be perceived.
Two, Bond knows exactly what works for him and he sticks with it. What does that mean? Well, he expects his garments to perform and so he doesn't use cheap substitutes. He also keeps his color palette somewhat limited to keep a harmonious look that is somewhat of a signature for him.
Three, Bond's style never overshadows him. The same is true for you, the clothes shouldn't be wearing you, you should be wearing your clothes.
Four, Bond moves with the times but leans into classics. Fashion has changed radically since 1962 and every Bond has found a way to move with the fashions. Roger Moore wore a safari suit and flared pants in the 1970s, Pierce Brosnan's Brioni suits and jackets lean more into the looser fit of the 90s versus Daniel Craig in the 2000s used Tom Ford suits with a slimmer and trimmer silhouette. So even though Bond goes with the time, certain elements like the classic suit are always part of his repertoire.
Five, you don't have to stick to bones color palette and if you're into clothes and you like to play with colors, you can certainly explore a little more, all that matters is that you find something that works for you.
Six, functional wear doesn't mean it has to be athleisure. Bond is always on the run yet you never see him in Lululemon pants.
Number seven, know the style rules and then break them as they suit you. Bond definitely breaks certain style rules and we don't suggest you make all of them but still, knowing what it is and then intentionally deciding not to follow it is much better than not having a clue in the first place.
Style number eight, dress for the occasion. Bond is typically well attired. He wears a tuxedo when it calls for it, he wears a suit when he shows up at MI6, and he wears a down jacket and boots when it's cold outside. Understanding your surroundings and the purpose of your clothes always help you to dress through a right level, depending on your occasion.
Number nine, the basics will always look good whether it's a pair of dark denim, a dark suit, a white shirt, a white pocket square or a knit tie, these are all staples in your wardrobe that you can combine with lots of different outfits and they work for Bond and they will work for you too.
Rule number ten, when in doubt, wear a jacket. I would say that Bond, more often than not, wears a jacket, whether it's a suit jacket, a blazer, a sport coat, a safari jacket or maybe a down jacket. He just wears something because it pulls his looks together and he's more complete that way.
Finally, last but not least, James Bond embraces the suit. James Bond chooses to wear it because it gives him dignity, authority, and competence. The suit is the classic hyper masculine garment that communicates power and authority, at the same time, I believe he wears it because it makes him feel good and respected.

Sven would be so perfect as a Bond villain. I could see him plotting evil schemes with a German accent while petting a cat! 😂
He can be in a gang with The Penguin and The Riddler
Ya know, 3 guys there, all different, all comfortable with the camera....
That could work.
Dr. Kaufman in Tomorrow Never Dies :D seriously
00 Schneider. Google it. A film from the 90s. It's him 😅
Schneider's cat!
Never forget that the Bond character is above all a military/Naval officer. His aesthetic is characteristic of a military man, posture, fit consistent with military tailoring and off duty wear
absolutely right, and that is most of all reflected in the novels with his rather utilitarian style
Rule #1: have the look and physique of James Bond. Fail for me already.....
Then start eating healthy and workout without giving up and you’ll have the physique.
actually this is the most important thing!😂😂😂
@@user-dc8jf5ix4f When I was a young salesman I was a regular at the top gym in Melbourne, but the memory your comment revived was my Sales Manager, who looked like Sven, telling me that if I took the time to meditate for 20 minutes, then all feelings for the need to exercise would go away. Just a thought. Phil
@@user-dc8jf5ix4f How many times do I have to workout before I get taller?
@@PantsofVance If your comfortable in your own skin height doesn't matter.
Here’s a thought: Bond may be wearing a belt with a 3-piece because he’s carrying a gun. If he’s using an ITW holster, he has to wear a belt. He has used a shoulder holster quite often, but this could be a detail that justifies the use of a belt.
let face it he only look good since he had a team in background to keep him look good while reality he just going look like bodyguard walking around...
In the best Bond suits he wears neither a belt nor suspenders. The pants are just so well tailored they stay up on their own.
I concur! An IWB holster requires a belt. A lot of people who don't work with firearms are unfamiliar with the need for secure placement while wearing a pistol. A holster shouldn't flop around at all, both for reasons of concealment and for speed & ease of draw. This detail may not be apparent in movies.
Concur your analysis. You pretty much need a good belt if you're strapped.
Pretty much why I wear a belt with a vest. I carry under my suit, and I just can't get a Miami Classic shoulder holster to behave with a slim fit suit and a full sized 1911.
For all those who say Sven would be a great Bond villain, imagine him being a villain who plots to mess up James' wardrobe with a color palette and pattern changing ray gun so Bond's clothes come out all mismatched.
😂😂😂
I'm gonna steal that idea for my own movie...If you don't mind.
:-0
@@bobrew461- All yours, just give me a cameo in the movie.
That sounds like something Doofinshmirtz would do.
Great way to demoralize him
Watching a video about the style of James Bond. Meanwhile millions are at home in sweatpants and t shirts under Quarantine. Thanks for the video as a reminder!
One thing to note is that Bond started wearing Rolex due to it being functional. A robust diving watch for an ex-Navy spy is a good fit, after all. Nowadays it is product placement, but the category of watch is the same.
Yep. Ian Fleming had Bond wearing a Rolex, but Omega paid big bucks for product placement so the more-recent films have him wearing Omegas rather than Rolexes.
@@seikibrian8641 They really needed the market exposure, because up until 1970 Omega had been the market leader for about half a century. In the late 1980s my late wife was responsible for a group of about 130 Jewelry shops, the largest group in Australia. When she gave me a gold Omega Seamaster for my 50th birthday she said that Omega had a very special pricing deal for all of the shops staff nationwide, because those people had a massive grass roots influence on general market sales. She said that the CEO of Omega told her that they were reviving their presence at shop staff level in preparation for a massive global advertising campaign. The product placement in the Bond movies flowed from that campaign, that included Australia, which because of its global success in a wide range of sports, had always been an important market for Omega. Phil.
@@phillipmoodie9071I'm sorry it took me four years to see this.
That was very informative. Thank you.
Deepest condolences on the loss of your wife.

Agent 00S(e)ven. 😎 cool idea!
Congratulations on your well deserved 50th like!
James Bond is my primary fashion inspiration. After seeing skyfall I bought a white tab collar shirt because I loved the way it looked
I WAS WEARING OSW 40 YEARS AGO. NO BIG DEAL.
I got a navy silk knit tie in 2019 because Bond wore one in Goldfinger and You Only Live Twice.
7:22 The belt is also a quick release weapon and can be used to hide various items. The buckle could be a pull out push dagger or multi tool.
The reason Bond wears a belt is because he's an action hero. Braces/suspenders are a liability in a fight
The 1970s always gets a lot of hate. I love the look although I realize some of its wardrobe can be a bit crazy. The suit however was very excellent, flashy, and colorful compared to modern suits which are trying to go slim fit and muted. I like 50's-80's wear and that includes the 70's and especially that era's three piece suit.
For me the classiest and most elegant James Bond was Sean Connery, specially when he wears that awesome grey three piece suit in Goldfinger, and the most stylish one was Roger Moore, I don’t care what anyone says but Roger Moore was the most stylish man in the 1970s
Finally some is giving the late Roger Moore the praise and credit he truly deserves. Severely underated, even in his role as The Saint.
A lot of Moore’s looks hold up way better than say Robert Redford or some other 70s movie star
you're 100 % right. He was also stylish in the "Persuaders" series with Tony Curtis.
Moore was fashionable but not stylish.....Moore's Bond was not the style of the literary Bond
Yeah but George Lazenby rocked that kilt in O.H.M.S.S..
As a woman, I love James Bond look...the clean lines and neat appearance with a hint of zip to the look. Makes a man look good!
Yes! In my personal opinion, the Daniel Craig incarnation of Bond is the epitome of masculine allure.

I think also with things like his choice of sports watch and a simplified colour palette, it would also make sense for someone like Bond who's travelling a lot (or for someone taking style tips maybe someone who's travelling a lot for business) to have much less to pack, so a couple of suits and shirt combos which all complement each other and not having an entire watch box to take with him is an advantage for just packing for perhaps carry on baggage.
Ideally you wouldn't want to wear a sport watch with the more formal end, but if your plan for the evening potentially involves diving off an exploding boat then something with 200m or more water resistance is going to effect your choice.
Yes more videos like this one! I find it very entertaining to see your criticism on famous style icons.
Your theory of relativity of bond fashion is astonishing, thanks
I’m changing my closet little by little into suits and shirts 👌🏼 easy for the brain less worries and is a respectful style
Sean Connery's Bond was the most classic and dapper.
007: Do you expect me to talk
GG: No Mr. Bond, I expect you to be dapper!
You have to do this also with the character Harvey Specter from Suits. 😂
Harvey Specter do you want me to leave your office?

"How many buttons?"
Great video. I am glad that I saw this. Makes me want to up my game a bit more for summer. The trad/preppy look is just too easy!
Brilliant and informative video, felicitations.
Excellent! Thank you.
Connery loved Grenadine silk ties (in gray, navy, or black) and 2-button single-breasted jackets. And, he used Saville Row tailors for many outfits.
Roger Moore favored double-breasted and bolder ties. Obviously, Moore had huge collars, lapels, and ties.
Brosnan favored double-breasted jackets, especially in gray. The roomy fit was very late 90s. Everything being Brioni, he and Connery are widely considered the best dressed.
Craig wore tight fitting Tom Fords, frequently. He wore very normal gray, navy, and black frequently.
All great points. I found it remotivating.
I see you more as a villain Sven. Do an episode on that. Goldfinger is your style.
Bond wears a coat for a prosaic reason; he carries a gun. Both belt and shoulder holster mandate wearing something covering them; the front pocket holsters for undernourished handguns also have a distinctive signature partially masked by the bottom of a coat.
Exactly!
@@BertieW0oster I also believe a jacket dresses you up and also gives you places for you carry items. You pants will get bulky if you fill the pockets too much. I think it is better to wear a shirt and jacket then a shirt with tie without a jacket.
Bond also wears a suit as part of his legend. In the early movies MI6 was covered by “Universal Exports” a business. Bond and other Double ohs often pass as British corporate types.
Absolutely to the point and fantastic content ! Great video , keep it up dear 👍
Very important rules shared 👍
In the old Bond movies, the character often wore a Rolex. I think there is a deal with Omega watches so he has to wear that now.
Correct. He also wore a Rolex in the novel's and one day Rolex didn't want to be in James Bond movies as they didn't want an assassin wearing their brand, so they went over to Omega instead
@Andrew Johnson. At the time Ian Fleming wrote the first Bond novels, the premium watch to own was an Omega Seamaster. Fleming always dressed a little different to his colleagues, so he mirrored that style in his novels. I turned 21 five years before the first Bond book and my parents gave me the Omega Seamaster, because it was commonly known as the best watch. Phil.
yippykiyay89 wrong. Omega just payed more
Nice video! Revisiting it to resfresh my memory before watching the new "Bond Looks" video that's been posted.
I gotta say I really love the 5:38 green suit with blue waistcoat and orange bowtie combination as a fall outfit! Bit too colorful for Bond as you say but something that would fit my style very well.
Thanks for the video Sven!
Love James Bond style, great video.
Excellent video
I love the fitting of the suit.
Finally! Thank you!
I wholeheartedly agree with the rule that embrace the suit for the way it makes you feel and how you're perceived and respected. As a news reporter, for flexibility, I usually wear a shirt and tie (I know, not the best, but works in my profession), but I am seen to be more respected than my counterparts who show up in bad ruffled polos and jeans and bad sneakers/boots. I have also had the comment before, "you're the only guy I know that shows up to a house fire in a shirt and tie." Ha ha. The other thing I notice is when I wear suit/shirt/tie, I get the comment "What's the occasion?" I say "it's a weekday." ;)
I agree and get the same comments. People don’t realize that yea it’s a big change but you feel, look and nail the successful man look.
As a woman, I find that men look much more masculine and attractive in a suit. Too many sloppy clothes being worn today!
I always just say....... “quite”! In answer to that and treat it as a rhetorical question in a light hearted way.
Keep it up.
Instead of the tie, wear a jacket instead. Immediate dressed up and looking professional. Shirt and tie is very "Dilbert."
6:58 I agree I love to learn about rules even if I doing the impossible that breaks them.
I disagree that a suit is "hyper-masculine." It is just appropriate in its level of masculinity.
RIP ,the one and only, the best 007.SEAN.
As a James Bond cosplayer I approve this video 🤵
James bond doesn't wear bow ties with the 3 piece suits. If he did it would also not be red, so you'll failed. More like what sven would wear..

Sven always seems like he will look down on me if I wear an open collar and the wrong shoelace knot when grocery shopping.
@Justin Williams. Well do you??? That would be letting the team down.
The weakest link!!! Phil.
Oh now this is a video I always wanted to see from GG. Aldo it is quite short. It could have been a half an hour video.
He wears a jacket to conceal his pistol in a shoulder holster. When he isn't wearing a jacket, it's in an ankle holster. Bond's style is calculated to draw attention to him. Like a stage magician he distracts, sets up and performs tricks that leave you confounded.
It also helps to be in fantastic shape, be British, and incredibly handsome. Once you've established all those points, this video will certainly be helpful in getting to full 007 style!
Great choice for James Bond. Truly an amazing menswear icon. Just like you are great for people like me and the guy below and above me commenting.
The belt was probably an accident, but it is an absolute necessity for someone carrying weapons and fighting. I’m former military, former law enforcement, and have carried a gun, extra magazines, a flashlight and a knife with me nearly all day, every day, since I turned 21. I wouldn’t be able to carry those tools, nor fight effectively, if I didn’t wear a sturdy belt with my three piece suits. Moreover, the vest is great for covering up concealed weapons without printing (showing the outline of the weapon through the clothing).
Superb Video.
Finally! I love it.
"The 70s was a really dark era for classic men's style and fashion". Sir, you have just become the undisputed heavy weight of understatement.
Great Prince of Wales tie. I ordered it from you and it is significant.
James Bond's watches are chosen for they are very heavy-duty diving watches, that are perfect for the character. The first was the Rolex Explorer (with that on the wrist, Hillary went on the Everest); than they passed to the Omega Speedmaster (it went on the Moon).
Not to mention Ian Fleming himself wore his Rolex and most likely was thinking of his exact model when he wrote about it in the books.
I like your suit but I think I’d have chosen a solid tie. Great video!
Saludos from Mexico! I signed contract today with a international bank. I was complimented on my dimple on my tie, video was watch last night!

On the same subject, the director of the first film, Dr. No, Guy Hamilton I think, told Sean Connery to sleep in Bonds bespoke Savile Row Suit to get him used to the 'feel' of being Bond
I am 65 and over 300 pounds. Blessed with good health. Anyway I go more for the Mafia Boss style suits since I fit that "look" and I get compliments all the time.
Fantastic insight. The latest movie No Time to Die has been pushed back for release in November 2020, but that could change again. Still think a guy in a suit is amazing. Stay safe and healthy!
I loved this video. It is a great subject matter. Two of my favorite style icons are Steve McQueen and James Bond. However, I would like to make a little correction. Twice you showed a clip from the movie Skyfall and said that Bond sometimes wears a down jacket. That was not a down jacket. That was a Barbour waxed cotton jacket.
@Ron Pruitt. The Barbour jacket was also loved by motorbike enthusiasts. But I preferred very solid leather coat style jackets, because they didn't shred if you parted company with the bike and went sliding down the road. But a leather motorcycle coat of that quality was twice the price of a Barbour, and in winter it was twice as warm. Phil.
Would love to see a video where you critique/react to menswear in popular movies or tv shows (e.g. Suits)

Dear Sven, thank you for a most interesting video. I do hope you won’t take offence if I comment on the length of your trousers! As with this video and others, I have noticed that your trousers often look a trifle short. In my opinion they would look better if they sat on the instep of the shoe forming a small fold on the crease of the trousers. At least, that is the way I like to wear them or am I out of touch with modern times? Thank you, Rodney (74 year old).
In my opinion, Pierce Brosnan is the BEST James Bond, that meets every requirement.
