  • Whenever you want to say "this" in Spanish, you have a choice between three words este vs esta vs esto.
The reason we need three words for "this" is because Spanish has a masculine gender, a feminine gender and a neutral gender.
If you want to refer to a masculine noun, you'll need to use the masculine form of "this". If you want to refer to a feminine noun, you'll need to use the feminine form of this.
But, then, there are situations, such as when you are unsure of what gender a certain noun is or when you are referring to abstract ideas that generally don't carry a gender, where you will need to use the neutral form of "this".
    In this video, you'll learn:
    - The masculine, feminine and neutral demonstrative forms of 'this' in Spanish
    - The masculine, feminine and neutral demonstrative forms of 'that', 'these' and 'those' in Spanish
    - When you should use each of these words to simply say 'this' (e.g. I want this)
    - The most common mistakes students make with these words
    - The focus areas that every Spanish student needs to get right with these words

As a native speaker, I can say that I think we use "esto" more for like situations. For example: "no me gusta nada esto"= "I don't like this (whatever situation) at all".
And also to emphasize a verb and not focus so much on the noun. For example: "esto no enciende"= "this is not turning on". In this situation you may be showing whatever object that is not working and the people interacting know what the object is but they are not focusing on the object but on the problem. When the noun is the protagonist, then you may say "éste" or "ésta", for example if you are in a shop and someone asks you which dress do you like, you can respond "éste me gusta", because you are choosing from a group of dresses, if in this situation you answered "esto me gusta", it would sound like a dress is an unknown object to you xD

You're not updated, since 2010 is wrong to use _éste, ése, aquél,_ its feminine and plural forms.
They don't use a tilde anymore because they didn't have different meaning. And when the noun is the protagonist you just know because of the context and when speaking one emphasize the word.

I speak French and often use French rules to help me in Spanish. This sometimes helps, but at other times hurts since the rules may be different. In French, when you are referring to two things, one feminine, the other masculine, you would use a masculine adjective or pronoun because the rule is "le masculin l'emporte" (the masculine carries it). So, my question: if you're referring to two things in Spanish, one feminine and the other masculine, would you use the plural masculine estes to refer to both, or to both singular esta and este since it's one of each or to the plural neutral estos? I hope my question makes sense to you. I enjoy your videos and find them very helpful in my Spanish studies. Thanks in advance for an answer.
