As an Arabic speaker, "lo" is almost exactly the same as a word we often use in Egyptian Arabic all the time, which is "elli". I think its formal (standard) Arabic equivalent is "Alladhi", which roughly translates to "that which", but in Egyptian Arabic, we use "Elli" a lot more.

Very informative. I always use the literal translation of Cosa and being to use Lo instead makes a big difference in many ways. I agree with your emphasis on the Subjunctive as The Keystone, but I think instinctively using and comprehending prepositional phrases and idiomatic expressions are a close second, such as "Lo antes posible y a lo largo de". Well done.

Your last point about phrases and expressions. I have indeed found it helpful to try and see if I can group two or three words together as a possible phrase instead of trying to translate every single word literally. It's greatly helped. I have a section in my notebook that I call "gestalt phrase fragments". It's a list of two to three word phrases where when each word is translated literally it's kind of gibberish. But when you think about them together as a unit, they become something more than their individual pieces and have a specific meaning. This happens a lot with "lo" and especially "que". I wrote down about 13 fragments from this video alone.
When I was visiting friends in La Penita de Jaltemba, as strange a name as there ever was for a town, we visited another town called, Lo de Marcos. And at the time, I could not wrap my head around what the Lo stood for in Lo de Marcos. I finally settled on, those. Those of Marcos. The people that live in the town. If you have another interpretation I'd love to hear it. We are talking about Nayarit, just north of the well-known Sayulita.
Lo de Marco would be sort of similar to the chez in French o da in Italian, meaning Marco's place -whether his home or restaurant- (chez Marcos, da Marcos). Vamos a lo de Marcos. Hope this helps.

It's literally like when you in English say "Marco's place" or just "Marco's ...". LO is the thing that go after the 's in that phrases, so it can be anything XD but always a substantive masculine and singular: bar, restaurante, lugar, objeto... And never will be "those" as you said, for that we have LOS, because it's plural.

I agree that learning from multiple sources is the best thing, rather than focusing on one. I have Pimsleur, ConjuGato, and an app called "Todaii: Easy Spanish" (although you can just use the website instead). These are great for reading. Paul's channel is great for technicalities and for translating for flavor instead of literally. The "Spanish with Nate" channel is great for listening and for hearing casual every day Spanish. There's also a radio station I stream from the internet, based out of Acapulco, that I listen to in the car which is great for listening comprehension. Get and learn your Spanish from multiple sources!

Paul, do you have a PDF summarizing all these gems you provide? I would easily pay for it. I often know that you have explained something somewhere in your videos but don't know where. It would be great if you had a "living document" somewhere that you updated with the key patterns/ideas as a quick refresher and links to videos if one needs to go more in depth. You would keep it updated when you released a new video. Maybe through Patreon or something? You are an excellent teacher!

For some reason on the example on :55, my brain actually registers both of those lo's as it. "You don't know it that you have until you lose it." with a correct translation as "You don't know what you have until you lose it."
I have to think about it more.
I struggled with this but from Spanish to English when I first started learning English. I don't know if this advice always works but whenever you have this kind of construction, where you use what, translate it as "lo que". Tell me what you need/Dime lo que necesitas, I'll do what I can to support your goals/Hare lo que pueda para..., What you said is important/Lo que dijiste es importante.

Food for thought. Been in Andorra, everyone speaks Spanish here. I find that they use Buscar in different ways here. Like when someone says they are going to get it, going to retrieve it, and other ways that "look for" doesn't quite work, they use buscar for all kinds of uses.
I use buscar for "to pick up" someone or something as well.

It's totally off topic but can I make a suggestion? I've been looking at "to hold" in Spanish. It's a nightmare. There are so many words and phrases to choose from to express different meanings, connotations and interpretations.
I reckon you could produce a mini playlist on the subject, let alone a video.

Catching up to past videos. Too funny I was thinking about idioms yesterday and see reference to the use of LO in them today 😂. Excellent video; I really appreciate how you presented different ways it could be used with different results. I don't think a grammar book could do it as succinctly and memorably.

Random request: can you do a video on why they say "los tacos estan buenos" instead of "los tacos son buenos"? In school they teach the verb ser, but in real life they use estar, at least in Mexico.

It is a set expression, "a solas" - alone. You can use solo/a.
So my brain always spins lo -eso, este, esa, los, la, las, se le. Never easy for me and I know the rules but the overlaps always cause me to flinch.

Have you ever seen the Coke ad with the slogan "Toma lo bueno". I know this is supposed to translate into "drink the best", but it always confused me. #1- why isn't it "Toma lo mejor"... and #2- why isn't it "Toma el bueno"? I know these are subtle differences, but I'm still curious.
lo mucho- how much . no import lo +adj que subjuntivo - no importa lo cansado que estes sigue adelante. lo antes posible
One use I tend to forget is when we use lo with ser and estar because in English we don’t have to use it. Some examples I found what I mean as as you can see we don’t translate into English. Not sure why.
Tu madre no es enfermera. Sí, lo es.Your mother isn't a nurse. Yes, she is.
Pareces cansada. Lo parezco porque lo estoy. You look tired. I look it because I am.
No estoy preocupado. Pues deberías estarlo. I'm not worried. Well, you should be.

To my ear this sentence: “Nunca sabes lo que tienes hasta que lo pierdes” should end in the subjunctive, as in, “Nunca sabes lo que tienes hasta que lo PIERDAS.” Am I correct?
I can see why you would think that. It is similar to the subjunctive clauses involving time, like "Sabré la verdad cuando Juan me traiga la carta." But, I've never seen this one in the subjunctive. Perhaps because it is just general advice. Hmmm. Now you have me thinking.

I got so confused during this video if you just say everything backwards when translate that would help ALOT … seems like lo @2:17 meant “the thing” (curious)
We use LO to refer to a neuter article or concept. In English, we often use the word "thing" for that. The thing I want to tell you is... Lo que quiero decirte es.....
I saw a phrase recently "Perdon por lo del otro dia".. I'm not sure why that 'lo' is in there
LO is the neuter article that refers to "the thing" you are apologizing for. LO is a great word to refer to a general concept or thing that is not expressed by a particular word.
Lo de ayer fue mi culpa. - The thing from yesterday was my fault.

I can understand your confusion. But maybe this will clear it up. Compare these two sentences:
It impresses me that you know so much about this topic. Me impresiona que sepas tanto sobre este tema.
It impress me how much you know about this topic. Me impresiona lo mucho que sabes sobre este tema.
In the first one, what impresses you? That you know so much about the topic, right?
In the second, what impresses you? How much....the phrase that appears before QUE. The part after que is just providing information about how much of what.
I’m a grammar nut and so I see what you’re saying, and thanks. I now see “que sabe” almost as an adjectival phrase,”known by you”. It’s as if the sentence were awkwardly spoken as: “The much known by you impresses me.” I know, que raro!
Why did you say the waiter asks you "que quire". Isn't it "que quires"? The Tu form. I have a Colombian friend and she is always saying to me "Tu sabe" (you know) and keeps saying to her it's "Tu sabes" and she always agrees even though she keeps saying it again and again.

Both are correct. It all depends on what you what to say. The first one is like a warning, the other one you would use it with some advice.

It depends on the usage of LO really. Which construction? For example:
Ellas son bonitas. They are pretty.
Sí, lo son. Yes, they are.
But, if you are talking about using mejor as an adjective, you are correct -- it will have to agree in number and gender with what it is describing: Te di las mejores opciones. I gave you the best options.
Lo mejor - the best thing, the best part. Lo mejor de la película... the best part of the movie....
