  • Murder to Avoid Child Support
    News of the Times Episode 337 | 1823 & 1896
Our first case from 1823 was quite a famous story in its day. Samuel Fellowes, who has been having intimate relations with one young lady from the village who comes from a respectable family, has now become pregnant and Fellowes seems to have lost interest.
He is busy in a second relationship but knows that he will be expected to support both the child and his first mistress. Fellowes is noted already for being greatly pained to release any money. He comes up with a desperate plan
The second case from 1896 is important and disturbing. It was an early trial win for the relatively newly established NSPCC - the UK National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children and gives a great example of the kind of thing the NSPCC were up against in the Victorian World.
Two cases where the murder, and intended murder, are motivated ultimately by money is today’s episode of Frightful Fridays.
    Hosted by Robin Coles.
