Classic American Goulash Made Easy

- American classic goulash is easy to make, uses a few simple ingredients, and is incredibly delicious. This recipe was always part of my mom’s weekly menu. I make it up on weekend and it also makes a superb midweek meal. This is they type of dish you package up and freeze, as well.
There are several variations to the dish and the ingredients can differ greatly. For example, some cooks like to use ketchup and tomato sauce along with diced tomatoes which is completely fine. Other spices can be added too.
Please don't get the mistake that it's Hungarian Goulash. American goulash and Hungarian are very different. The dish has been around for centuries, however.

Dave my friend, great kitchen, I miss those days, looks like my Ma & Pa's kitchen even today, except for the retro fridge. Great recipe, 1 poster called it American chop suey, in New England they call it Yankee doodle goulash, I've heard all 3, we call ours the same as yours in Kentucky, very delicious, inexpensive, healthy, & filling, once again, great kitchen & recipe, we have the 2 girls this weekend, don't know what we'll make for supper, they'll decide, they are a little spoiled, lol, You know
Hey Steve. I really miss those days too. We should all have vintage room in the house to time travel to. 😆 Yes, I've heard it called that too. It was so good though, Steve and you can add just about anything to it. Hi to the family again for me. No, they are never spoiled as long as you are grandpa. Have a great weekend buddy.

That's about 99% the recipe my grandmother used growing up and my aunt took over and now I'm about to start
Really. That's a good thing.
I remember that from childhood. I forgot about that dish. Thanks for cooking that dish. Gonna make it tonight and save it for tomorrow. I remember it was always better the next day. Thanks again
Have a good weekend.
Hey Charles. Yes, I have so many stories around goulash. It used to be a meal a lot of men cooked. That was back in the day when men only cooked goulash and did burgers on the bbq. 😅 You are right, it is even better the next day. Hope you make it and enjoy. Let us know. You have a super weekend too. 😄😁
Mom brought me here lol, not a cook myself and I RARELY cook, but with your easy recipes... thank you!

Hello Dave.
We had even simpler when I was a kid. On any night, we had Macaroni & tomato juice, that's all! hahahaha.
I've made that goulash one many times after, when older. Especially in Winter. So comforting.
Be safe & well Dave.
Hi Serge. Funny you mention that because I have heard of it. It is really so good and comforting as you say. You stay safe too and have a super weekend.

Hey Frank. Thanks so much. That's so nice you look to us. We don't really cook huge meals. I don't eat that big anymore either. Hope you try it. Oh, the great thing about this recipe is you can freeze it and have it another time. Stay safe and well, Frank.

Hey Dave, I have a green classic kitchen and I love it. My mom used to make this for us just like your recipe and added parmesan cheese with the cheddar, great recipe, show us the creamed salmon on toast some time please, thanks for sharing your Recipes!
Hey William. You know, I think everybody should have a classic or vintage room in their house. Just to take a walk back in time. 😁 Yes, parmesan would be so good too. You are so welcome and have a great weekend, William.
That looked extremely straightforward.
Hi James. It's pretty easy but so good. Hope you give it a try. Stay safe and well.
I never add cheese to my goulash, my mom didn't either. I add a little bottled chili sauce to mine, gives it an amazing flavor.
Also I partially cook my macaroni and always use green bell pepper,, and no water. I let everything except the macaroni cook for about half an hour, then add my partially cooked macaroni and let it cook until macaroni is done.
It was one of my favorite meals growing up.
Hi Linda. Sound so good. I just like the cheese. I'm like a big mouse. Thanks for sharing your version. Yes, it was one of my favourites too. Stay safe and well.
Nice wow stay connected liked no 350
Dave, btw can you give me the name of the grocer where you buy your ground beef, gonna try to help you find out meat/fat ratio's, I'm on a mission, lol
Hey Steve. The trouble is I get my beef from so many places. For example, the butcher down the road. Now he could tell me. I also get it from faceless places such as Walmart and bulk food stores. Not too sure what we can do there my friend.
@@TheCooknShare I'll try & find out Dave
Love it! Thanks, Dave! This recipe takes me back. A quick, easy classic childhood meal. Comfort food for the soul! Bravo! 😀🏆💖

Not sure if you cooked the noodles and then cooked them down more?? Sorry, not sure what happened with the noodles?
Hi Barbara. No, they actually cooked right in there. Hope you try it and enjoy. Let us know.
I just have to share the world’s worst recipe from my childhood back in the 60’s, just to give you a laugh. We called it Aunt Bessie’s dish. Yes, I had an Aunt Bessie, from the country, who was a very old fashioned spinster, and a tad grumpy. Just to preface this, we were middle class, and why my mom ever made this, still baffles me, because it was truly awful, and money was not an issue. Ok: boil ground beef in a pot of water, add macaroni, salt. When done, squirt in ketchup. Simmer a few more minutes. Yes, that is it ! And the macaroni was always boiled to death. I still have nightmares about Aunt Bessie’s Dish. And oddly enough, all through my childhood,I would spend a few weeks every summer, up the country with Aunt Bess, and she never once made this ! ?!!!
Yours looks great !
The cans of tomatoes I get are 28 oz.
I've never seen an 8oz.can
Sorry John. I would just use a 28 oz can. Hope that helps.
@TheCooknShare , Dave my good friend, this is what I have found out so far on ground meat in Canada, the fat listed in these ratios is supposed to be the max amount of fat on the label " name" in Canada for walmart or sam's club, on the label( walmart owns all Sam's clubs) ground beef meats, "Extra" lean= 90/10, lean=83/17, medium=77/23, regular=70/30, now there is a 3 country co-op between Mexico, USA, Canada that this does not apply to , it will say on label that it is from the co-op of those 3 nations, we have it here also , but is not consistent ratios. I called walmart/sam's corporate for Canada. I can check other places that sell it if you give me the names, let me know pal, btw I think extra lean is what you are looking for on most of your recipes as it should only have a max of 10% fat to 90 % beef
Hey Steve. Wow. Some great tips here. We have other chains such as nofrills, etc. The thing is they give nutritional value on the package but no ratios, but what you have given certainly helps. I do like some fat, however. In much of the ground beef here I don't even think it's fat but a lot of water and dye. I still say make your own, but who has time. Thanks so much, Steve.
Hi. I guess it would be somewhat similar.
@@TheCooknShare yw brother
@@TheCooknShare I'll talk to you in a little while on today's video pal, got do something 1st
Got ya, Steve.
So this is how Italians feel when they see pineapple on pizza
Not too sure what you mean.
@@TheCooknShare Sorry, now that I'm reading my comment again, I see that it can come off as rude. I've been watching your channel for a while and cooking your recipes and they were all great.
What I meant to say is that American goulash in general is very strange to me, probably as strange as pineapple on pizza is for an Italian. It's very different from the original Hungarian goulash/gulyás that I grew up eating.
Hi there. No, I really didn't think you were being rude. I should have mentioned it was not Hungarian goulash in the video. I did get a lot of comments about that. I did say it in the description, however. Thanks so much for clarifying that as we did get a lot of rude comments, however. At any rate, keep watching and cooking. Stay safe my friend.
How can it be classic American food? It's Hungarian. And by the way it should be a soup. See Gulyásleves.
It might have come from there. I wrote that in the description, but a dish called the same thing has been cooked in North America for decades. Actually, the English definition is a stew with beef. They serve fish and chips in many countries with variations. My roots go back to the UK, but I certainly would not object to it being called “Classical Italian Fish and Chips.”
This mess indeed has nothing to do with the Hungarian goulash. It cannot be more American. But surely it is fine for some. Anyone who knows a thing about cooking will know how to make a difference after 2 minutes of watching this video, so there's no fear that it could harm the original dish by misusing its name.
@@alegreparpadeo OMG! Now because of you I watched it.
@@VinylPanda-NaturallyClean Sorry :)

@@TheCooknShare To call this Goulash! I'm from Vienna and this hurts my feelings! A trigger warning would be the least you could do!
