With the weather getting colder and wetter, I decided to leave the Pacific Northwest and head South. Today’s plan was to drive south out of Humboldt California. But the rain was really coming down. And the 101 freeway felt dangerous because of some flooded areas. I also have two tires that need to be replaced. So instead of carrying on, I stopped for the day in the tiny town of Scotia California.
Scotia is located right off the 101 freeway, next to the Eel River.
Even with the non-stop rain, it was a nice day. The rain let up a little and I got a chance to get outside and walk along the Eel River at Fireman’s Park.
I also filled up my bulk propane tanks at the Shell gas station a few miles away in Rio Dell.
I ended the day by cleaning out my fridge of leftovers. And had a pretty good meal with some polenta and ground beef gravy.
The weather the next day was much better. And after a very good sleep in the quiet town of Scotia, I resumed my trip South. At the end of this video, I included a little look at the majestic giant Redwoods as I drove along the Avenue of the Giants.

My name is Scott and in 2015, I bought a Ram ProMaster City to live in. Even though I didn’t know much about RV’s and campervans, I set about building the van out as a minivan camper. And in April of 2016, I moved into my minivan full time.
Over the years, I’ve learned you don’t need to have a big skill set to build your own campervan. And that living as a minimalist and utilizing solar power can be a less expensive way to live. I’ve also learned that a minivan can be a very comfortable home.
Please follow along as I document my journey.

I find your videos more relaxing to watch with your calm voice. It's a nice change compared to other content creators.
Thanks Paul
Agreed. It’s very well done and he’s really good at it!
You're a nice, gentle spoken chap. I enjoy your videos.
Thanks RJ
When your not on i go back and binge watch. God bless Scott❤❤😊😊
Thank you. I appreciate you doing that. A new video will be up in a few minutes
You made the right choice about not driving along the highway in the wet weather better off being safe than sorry especially when you’re in a van because your van is your home
Scott, Rain cleans the air. It always seems so fresh afterward and so much healthier for your lungs. Lessens migraine head aches too. You learned to go with the flow. A good skill set indeed. When a van dweller there always has to be a back up plan. Save something you love to do for days just like this. Like museums and seeing the contributions of local artists. I always visit welcome centers and listen to the narratives of their hosts. I learned a lot about local folk lore and recipes that way. Enjoy.
Hi I’ve never heard that about migraines…I’ve been having so many more since I moved to Arizona. Planning on moving back up to Oregon so we’ll see how that affects these headaches, thank you
*I LOVE rainy days and nights!*
*Awesome video!!*
🙂👍🌹
My gosh the avenue of giants is just stunning🌲🌲🌲🌲♥️ happy travels Scott😎
The Avenue of the Giants is worth the trip. Thank you
Wow those trees are Giant's 👍👌✌️🤞🙌🙏🇺🇸🌅🌄💫🌟🌞
Sometimes we all need an unexpected detour from our plans to " change it up " a little and make things more interesting exactly like your weather day did for you that day. Loved the vid... Thanks ! 🚐
I agree hate graters love your pans love the basic stuff ❤
Very good video🥰I so want to see the redwoods
The Redwoods are something special
I just stumbled across your channel, I like your setup! I’m strongly considering a Transit Connect or something similar as my next rig for traveling.
I grew up in Humboldt and my first wife grew up in Scotia. I played games on that ball field at Fireman’s Park! You have a new subscriber 😊
Hey Thanks Guy. The Transit Connect vans are really good.
Humboldt seems like the best place on earth. Thanks for subscribing!
I enjoy your videos.
Thanks Buddy
Loved the nature walk & sounds 💚🌲🌿☔️💦
Thanks ✌🏼
Looks like you were forced off the road by the weather and not some lunatic in his monster truck! Whew!
Nice tranquil video to watch first thing on a Sunday morning.
Thanks Bayside
It’s good to see you enjoying the wet rainy walkabouts. Also you’re wise to be careful of the weather since it so unpredictable in our time, and can turn dangerous. Albuquerque has had some rain, not enough of course. But we certainly need more snow for our ski areas. But I live here precisely because of the mild weather and semi arid high mountain conditions. I missed my November California trip due to a bout with Covid which I got through ok and now I’m making a spring time plan. I have a friend in Carpinteria to visit. Keep up the nice videos and do take good care of yourself. Give an update on your health status when you can. ❤️
I like polenta mixed with cheese more like mashed potatoes consistency with a ratatouille on top. Basically a tomato based vegetable stew with onion peppers zucchini and or eggplant. There are cans of eggplant appetizer that work well on top of the polenta that they sell at Trader Joe's- easier for van life. I think I have said this before Scott, forgive me if I have- but I wear wool socks all year long! Best thing for my feet anyway- I even wear them to bed! Stay warm and safe!
Wool is the best!
Always enjoy watching you cook up something to eat. Like the variety of dishes.
Thanks Wizard
Thanks for the van life hack of cooking nachos. I live in a RV camper without an oven and this was brilliant!
You’re welcome. It works well if you have a heavy gauge pan. I’ve made pizza from scratch using this same method
Stay safe and warm. Thanks for showing us Scotia.
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching.
I been seeing where you guys are getting alot of flooding and coastal surge along your favorite areas. Safe travels friend
Yes, the entire coastline of California is experiencing flooding.
That's one way of getting my attention ... the beauty of the forest and the sound of the rain 🌧 🤗
Scotia is next to where the 6.4 earthquake hit and the Eel is one of the rivers that floods. Also a lot of the 101 is washing out. Stay safe!
Thank you. I added a note in the description regarding the earthquake.
Happy to hear you are alright as the mews up here was reporting heavy rain and flooding in Northern CA.
Travel safe and thanks for sharing your travels and life.👍🙏
The flooding is along the whole California coastline. Thanks for watching!
Eat it, Scott!!! Eat ALL of the ground beef, there wasn't that much and it's going to go bad ... don't feel bad about eating a good, hearty meal ... you really don't have to worry about counting calories or about gluttony ...
And I hope you're not caught in that crazy rain event they're predicting for northern California!!!
The ground beef was new and just opened. The rest were leftovers.
I’m safe but watching where I park.
Hey Scott! Enjoying your adventures as always. Thanks for the upload!
Thanks!
Your dinner actually looked delicious. I love to take easy days when it rains. Enjoyed your drive at the end of the video.
Thanks Sharon. Happy to hear you enjoyed the added driving video, too.
Glad you are doing well 😊
The scenery is so beautiful while you wore driving
Hi! Scott, I love the Avenue of the Giants! You are looking good! Glad to see you are feeling better. Happy Trails! Stay warm and have a wonderful day exploring wherever you are at. ❤😊
Thank you but this was recorded before I was sick. Though I am now fully recovered.
👍😍💝Loved watching. Thank you. 💝
Thanks so much ✌🏼
Enjoy your vids, gracias. I don't like driving in rain, snow or night😕. Its great to hear you making the best of situations. I to enjoy the sound of rain on zinc reminds me of 🇵🇷
I avoid driving in snow at all costs!
Thanks for watching
I loved this video. I’m from Scotia NY and it was nice to hear you say the name Scotia ❤️
Wasn’t aware of one in NY. I’m going to look it up on the map now.
I wasn’t sure if my pronunciation was correct. Haha
@@StaticCamperVan Your pronunciation was perfect. Scotia NY is a suburb of Schenectady which is outside of Albany. It was a wonderful village to grow up in. ❤️ We enjoy your videos very much. I hope you have Healthy and Happy new year.
This is a great one Scott I have been addicted to your older videos love them. I got a spring time cold ughh. But I can binge watch your stuff lol. Love them all. Lee
Such a beautiful little community.
Good that you stopped rather than risking a windy wet highway drive.
Really nice photography on your part. I like how in the park by an open gate its as though the feeling of being Welcomed into the area. Really nice
👍
Florida is nice & tame & sunny as heck , head's up ! ☕️🍯🍶🏖🌞
you are so creative when cooking
Probably because of my old Boss. She’s a great chef and I was able to learn a little from her.
It's been raining and raining here in northern California. Everything feels soggy. We are happy to have it, but it would be better spread out a bit. 😁
We haven't spent very much time in Scotia, however, we sometimes like to stop at Hobie's for a sandwich on our way to spend a few hours at the river in the summer time. ☀️ So glad you like our little Humboldt County. I will never tire of driving through the Avenue of the Giants.
Hey you saw the footage at the end. Great.
Thanks for the driving scenery. I miss it up there.
I really miss it too! Thanks for watching
I also like the sound of the rain, i sometimes play a "rain on window" CZcams video, goes for along time, sends me off to sleep in a good place.. :D
Great scenery. Thank you for sharing 😊. Safe travels.
Thanks for the video, stay safe Scott. You ran out of Yellowbird.. when I run out is when I want it the most. 😉
True that!
Amazing how wet it has been on the west coast of the US, New Zealand has been very wet in December and January and its supposed to be summer, all the best for the New Year.
Thanks, Sean. I hope your new year is going great.
@@StaticCamperVan Bought myself a nice present in the South Island, 5 litres of Manuka bush honey for about $20 USD for my coffee
That’s a great price!
Hopefully! You will filming inside your van at night so cozy..
Didn't record inside the van this time. It was dark and I was tired.
@@StaticCamperVan I hope you will do it later! I like the way you cook inside your van.. Stay warm and away from storm from the north
Wow! What a pretty place to "hunter down" & wait out the rain. It's still a mess in the northern half. It's no fun feeling cold & wet!
I've had a terrible day. This older episode came up on my feed, and Scott showing off Scotia really calmed things down for me, makes me want to visit there too. Thank you!
I hope tomorrow is much better
Thank you! @@StaticCamperVan
Love the video.
Polenta? I never know what to do with it.
Humboldt is very nice. Thanks for the explore. Seems to be a cozy town.
I love the beautiful places you take us through ❤️
Aww, thanks for that!
I love the sound of rain on the roof too. For some reason I plastered the interior walls and ceiling of my van with dodomat (sound deadener; I think Nate Murthy suggested it) in the early days and it just muffles the pitter-patter a little. Very relaxing. In fact I purposefully part in exposed spots here on the Cornwall coast during a storm to feel the van rock and shudder (the only cause if its rocking...). Love stormy vanlife!
Ah, yes. Your weather would be similar to the Pacific Northwest. After I installed cork on my ceiling, the only disappointment was the muffled rain sound
It's good that you like to walk. I love to walk.
Polenta sounds to similar to something I would never want to eat for me to consider it in a meal. Nothing nicer than sitting on the porch in the rain. Nice porch ✌🏼
I lived in So Cal for 30 years; have a very good friend up where you were in Arcata. Some wild weather on the coast now .... haven't heard "polenta" for a long time. Thanks for the refresher! Interesting supper you cooked with it....
Always nice to see your cooking. Thanks🙏
Thanks Charmaine
I was delighted to see you’d been forced off the road and graced us with such a lovely video. Splendid use of 26:09. Cheers ☕️☕️ and stay safe.
Thank you. I appreciate you watching
That dinner looks delicious!
As always, Thumbs up 👍
No one is ever really happy if they are cold, hungry or really tired. (Or out of coffee in your case... 😁😅) Hugs. Happy New Year. Yesss.
I love the Avenue of the Giants!!
Thanks Bev. Happiest of a New Year to you.
Very pretty ride😍
Good video, nice to get out for a walk. Glad you got some propane. Stay safe.
Awesome video
Thanks Alvin
Hello from Virginia Beach 🏖️
Hi Kathleen 👋🏼
Landslides, strong winds, rain and flooding in parts of west coast. Check your forecast. Tune in the news. Stay safe.
What a sweet little town! ... looks like your instincts brought you to a cool place to explore. ... but I think that is an epi-center for those quakes. ... pretty place anyhow ... 😺 💜
Thanks Violet
All the coffee making in this video is like season 1 of Breaking Bad but you're cooking coffee instead.
There you are. I was almost worried.
That spigot without a handle back there at Scotia's Firemen's Park was a wake-up call. I will remember to carry a small plier's for the occasion now and then, or visit my local hardware store and pickup a spare handle. Thanks for the thought!
Hardware stores sell a spigot key. But I’ve not bought one as I feel that crosses a line into stealing.
The keys are better than pliers as pliers can damage the spigot stem.
Both good points.
when you talk about solar exposure by heading south, it usually(not always) does so just by heading inland here In Humboldt.
Love it much. Love from the uk southwales
Nice video Scott
Thanks Gypsy
Now I’m hungry….btw I got an enameled cast iron pot (I’d never had one before) and it’s very nice! Heats very evenly and cleans up easily as well.
Cool! Glad you like it.
Wow, January seems to have so much more rain in store for California’s coast ( was just watching Ryan Hall’s channel) Stay dry and warm ( like Florida is these days) and maybe try chili poured over your polenta just to be sure with yourself that you REALLY like it !
I think the trick to polenta is frying it up really well.
@@StaticCamperVan Think so, otherwise it’s like porridge ( which is good for other dishes or brekkie)
Are you British? Haha
🦋
I had to go to Seatac last night in the dark and rain. Not fun. It was very busy as usual.
Oh, that doesn’t sound like fun
👍
I really like finding you on my you tube. 😊 I hope you are doing well 🎉
Hey Thanks so much, Kim. I’m doing great
Hey Scott, its Jan 10th and I'm in down in Pismo Beach. Obviously not sure how far south ur currently at. The central coast here is getting pounded with rain. Guess u have seen weather video of the Santa Cruz area, It was pretty good when I was there in Oct & Nov 22. How far south on the coast are u willing to go to get some sun? Take care
Storm door is open for more rain, maybe it'll bust the drought, maybe less fires this summer.🙏🤞😀
We shall see
I like your van set up.
I built out a cargo trailer. It’s always being tweaked a little or added on to.
I am interested in your cooking stove or burner.
What kind of frying pan do you have? Do you remember where you purchased it
I Love cast iron, but I am looking for a good light weight pan.
The pan is Carbon Steel, it’s not light but lighter than cast iron. The cooktop I found on Home Depot’s website. I have videos on both items in this Playlist: czcams.com/play/PL9PWzpL1cZIHqSZqC7ho6jhfWSQaLisGF.html
I thought it a bit strange not to drive in the rain but then I thought that if your house is your car then one might think differently about putting it at risk driving in the rain. Also, that was a cool stirring device you have at 10:43.
That is a coffee grinder: czcams.com/video/cwb7Dq17pBI/video.html
I know your videos are behind in the timeframe and that’s expected. But I just know that California should be getting a lot of rain and I hope you stay safe or at least have an inflatable boat at hand.
I’m definitely parking on high ground. So much flooding
@@StaticCamperVan we don’t want to see you on national news floating down the street sitting on top of your van, sipping coffee. Although it might do wonders for your view count, it won’t do wonders for your van lol.
Hahaha. That it would
Don't get sick walking around cold rain not good for you 😢
Sliced cheese is better , less handled , or processed ! 🧀
Hey, love the video and glad to see you're doing well! Not sure if you've covered it before but how do you make travelling continuously work for you financially? Do you work sporadically to top up what you spend or do you have ways to earn whilst on the road?
I’ve talked a little about work on previous vlogs. Generally though, details about work are only shared with Patreon supporters.
Thanks for watching.
Ha! You said spigot instead of hose bib. 😃
You’ve got a good memory 😂✌🏼
What are the nicest months in your opinion to visit the Pacific North west?
Fall is my favorite. Spring is good too. But I like to see some rain because it’s prettier. If you are avoiding rain, the summer is the best time.
For me it’s September👌🏼
Born & raised in Seattle & I can offer this: most outdoor weddings here occur between Aug 15 and Sept 25. And as much as we love our rain, most brides and grooms prefer a sunny day for their nuptials.
Some Chile n Beans on Top of your Chips! Chile,Chips, Cheese!👍👌✌️🤞🙌🙏🇺🇸🌅🌄💫🌟🌞
Does your setup support a lil small cozy electric blanket? They get pretty warm. And once you’re warm, you can turn off the control to conserve energy.
I don't use electric blankets for several reasons. But I do have many ways to stay warm when it's chilly out. I have a video where I go over all of the things I do when sleeping in very cold weather: czcams.com/video/i3KKVbR7HaE/video.html
Interesting way you use the areo press
Yes, I find it easier. I’ve also found that I spill more water using the traditional method.
Lots of professional baristas use the “inverted” method. I’m no barista but feel like using the AeroPress this way yields a better extracted cup.
I have to try polenta
It seems most people don’t really like polenta. But at the right price and frying it in lots of butter, I kinda like it
@Static CamperVan yeah I better give it a go. Thanks bud
Hi Scott. I'm curious. May I ask, where do you get your music from? I mean, is it free or do you pay for a service? And what link can I sample from? Just a general link to where I can sample music from, from youtube. Thanks!
All the music you hear in my videos is provided by CZcams. The music can be found in CZcams Studio. I am not able to provide a link as you need to log into CZcams Studio on your own account.
Is polenta similar to cornmeal mush? I like cornmeal mush fried in a little bit of butter with some syrup on it.
It is. Not sure I’d like it sweet but the frying in butter seems to be my preference
Besides coffee and water what are your favorite beverages?
Coffee just coffee
..maybe go for a second dinner he says... And I'm given to think perhaps a third dinner (depending what time these meals are enjoyed then perhaps a third dinner is the same as a pre breakfast, I don't know??) I remember as a child at home my folks were into midnight pancake suppers... ~Connie
I have no issues with midnight pancakes
A decade, and another decade, add a few more decades... Goodness such a long time ago and yet with your comment, "Maybe go with a second dinner," and suddenly the remembering of those pancake suppers seems in some respects only ..Moments.. ago...
...reminded of second breakfast from
LOTR
Aragorn: Gentlemen! We do not stop 'til nightfall.
Pippin: But what about breakfast?
Aragorn: You've already had it.
Pippin: We've had one, yes. But what about second breakfast?
[Aragorn stares at him, then walks off.]
I’ve never seen LOTR. I know, I know, haha
When LOTR first came out I was in the midst of reading all the books in that series. A guy I met on line was continually making LOTR references and I had no idea what he was talking about. This one was born blind and he shared how from literally from a babe these are the books his Dad read to him. So I started reading this series. He identified with The Wraith... When the movie came out he asked me if I was going to see it. I replied that until I read all the books, No. He and I talked the chapters. Personally I like the books better than the movie...
Forced off the road". I was waiting to see someone trying run you off the road. It wasn't until after your polenta dinner did I finally realize it was the weather that "Force you off the road". LOL
The explanation was in the very beginning
Next stop: Chico Hot Springs my friend!
Great idea. I’ve never been
@@StaticCamperVan They used to have a public hot spring pool recreation area! And I think it is where Jeff Bridges met his wife!
Yummy dinner! I make something similar with chopped onion, garlic and broccoli or spinach. Zucchini and carrots work well too. Thanks for showing Humbolt county!
Thanks for riding along
Do you shop at Walmart? I’ve watched a lot of your videos and haven’t heard you ever mention walmart
Not very often
Did I see a measurement stick on the tree in the park??
Think so. Not sure what the story is though
Most all your videos it’s a raining day lol
Haha it's been a rather rainy winter and spring
Yes. The Pacific Northwest..
Do you read many books in your down time?
I’m embarrassed to say, no. Unfortunately I don’t have a lot of room for books. I do a lot of reading on my phone though
I was wondering this too!
Can you share with me the camera and gimbal/tripod equipment you use? Your videos are always very sharp and stable. I enjoy how peaceful your videos are and how calm your energy is. I'm binge watching your videos. I tagged you in one of my upcoming videos being released on 1/28/23. Thanks for sharing your journeys with us!
Thank you. I use an iPhone 11 Pro and have a few small tripods. I don’t use a gimbal. I also use an external microphone. But that’s it for equipment. I don’t really have room for a “real” camera
Do you use a light ring for lighting?
@jacquelynallen488 Had a ring light in the past but when it broke, I replaced it with a better quality camera light
