Another Rainy Day in my Van during a Severe Weather Warning

A High Winds Warning Weather Alert popped up on my phone. Dangerous wind gusts were reported. Trees and debris were being blown around. In a case like this, it can be unnerving while living in a van.
The alert recommended seeking shelter. But that wasn’t something that I can easily do.
I considered parking in a mall multi story parking garage. But I opted to park out in the middle of the mall parking area, as far away from trees as possible.
Today wasn’t a fun day but it wasn’t too bad either. I got a chance to get some work done. I also cooked some good food and drank plenty of hot coffee. All the while listening to the rain tapping away on the roof of my van.

My name is Scott and in 2015, I bought a Ram ProMaster City to live in. Even though I didn’t know much about RV’s and campervans, I set about building the van out as a minivan camper. And in April of 2016, I moved into my minivan full time.
Over the years, I’ve learned you don’t need to have a big skill set to build your own campervan. And that living as a minimalist and utilizing solar power can be a less expensive way to live. I’ve also learned that a minivan can be a very comfortable home.

Really enjoyed this weather laden visit. Calming. Humor. Eats. Snacks. *** Yes, if the head is covered but the toes are cold, time to put the heat on! *** Was reminded to be grateful for my smallness - I can still pretty easily pass from the front to back / back to front of my mini-van (no need to go outside). But if I were taller it might not be so easy.
These ProMaster City vans are a little narrower than a regular minivan. I kind of forget about the size difference between the two

You face each element of the environment strategically. Your prepared and comforted by the nuances of your van design and make it home. You have successfully incorporated and embraced can life and made it work when the weather is good or poor. You figured it out. You seem content and squared away with your lifescape. That's something alot of people who have an apartment condo or sticks and bricks home don't have in the way you do. Good for you!
I spent almost 40 years living in uncomfortable circumstances. That past experience has shown me just how fortunate I am now

OMGOODNESS, you reminded me of a time I was lost in Texas. Seemed like nothing around for miles. Till found a different rest area next to an abandoned building. The rain was coming down hard, like this video. Did the best I could and even put my emergency brakes 😆. The sound of the rain was so calming I even was rocked to sleep with the van swaying. I actually slept peacefully

I have watched many of your videos and what I see as a common theme is a kind, considerate human being, you like to have time alone to think about what life is about, your plan to travel and work as you can, is solid, because you can work at any age in any job, pride is what you have, you take care of your needs, now that is a great place to be in life, and hope you get more to take care of van issues.

I parked in a shopping center once near a movie theater, and a tornado came through, filled the parking lot with hail and a flash flood of rushing water. I thought I was going to die. 😅 Your best bet is to park as close to the concrete wall of the building as you can get.

just found your channel Cooking Oats for Breakfast. Always cooked mine the day before. Bring to boil with oats already in, give it a stir when boiled, put lid on and take off gas then cover with a thick cloth. it will cook on its own over night. it turns out solid and a clean pan. i put mine in a microwave to heat up, but i guess you'll use the pan.
In warmer weather, I will soak oats overnight and heat them briefly before eating. But there isn't any reason to heat or cook oats that have soaked overnight.
You've reminded why I need to shop at Trader Joe's again.
The last time I got a severe weather warning the rain stayed on full blast with heavy winds and off and on lightning and thunder. i parked close to the side of a. Walmart building that lessened the wind shaking my van. I was expecting a knock on my 🚪 but none came. When
I woke up there were 4 cars parked in back of me. Later that day a police car passed he gave a thumbs up I did the same and he drove off.
In snow my favorite is the lower level of a large multi level hospital parking lot I park fairly close to the elevator I have a handicap placard and handicap spots are near the elevators. I have met 2 other van lifers and we keep in touch and have spent. 2 snow storms together Its great when they shut the city down no cars are allowed on the roads.
Maintenance crews come around and brush the snow off all vehicles and plow the driveways its a win win situation. If people are stranded Im told the hospitals have places to stay until the severe weather is over.
This was 3 months ago. Hope that you're enjoying the weather, much more now.
I would just kick back and do some sewing or something creative, and sip my tea, and listen to the rain, all day. Possibly watch some you tube, as well. A beautiful rainy day is gift... In my eyes.

@@ianm5249 that’s not an easy question to answer. I’m also not supposed to talk about it. The easiest answer is to say that the algorithm prefers longer view times
Uploaders aren’t supposed to talk, but I can. He only gets paid if the commercial is played all the way through. The first week of December 2022, they started playing double but shorter commercials with the first one mandatory. The best way to support a channel you like is to let the commercials play. Also subscribe and take the time to go through and make a small positive comment for each video then give all the rest of the comments a thumbs up. This may take you 5 minutes per video. Viewer/subscriber enthusiasm is definitely noticed by the algorithm and helps push a channel to the front page which begets more views and subscribers. Hours of watch time is king, but everything helps. I have heard of viewers who mute their device and turn it face down while the commercials play, but I would never condone that.

Great video Scott guess not much you can do when Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate lol. That polenta looked so good. Your right about malls I think we are about the same age when I was a teen hanging at the mall was so much fun. Game room, record store. Etc etc
I was traveling during severe weather one time. I saw tornadoes in distances and got off interstate and ended in small town. Everything was locked down tight. I parked the van between two brick buildings, in a small alley, until weather cleared. We ended up safe. Tornado missed town, but hit cars on interstate. Be safe out there!

If you need more protection, try parking in a car wash stall. I live in okla. When we get hail or wind we would park there. Also check if any places have underground parking. Like malls or office buildings.
Hi, I also live in my van. When ever there is a severe storm which could possibly damage my van, I have solar panels and a roof fan/exhaust, I drive into a covered parking garage until it is safe again. My van is small like yours.

A good place to ride the storm out, is at the self car wash places. It's concrete and your van or RV won't blow away and you can leave your windows open and nobody is gonna be there washing their car in a storm.😂😂😂😎😎😎

I wish I could live in my car for a year. I want to to save monies for a tiny home or a used RV. I don't have my home anymore but I am in a cheap apartment in the suburbs. It was to expensive out west. Love you getting on with life. Although, it is expensive all over the world.
