  • Google Glass is a headset with a projected display, a camera and a data connection that could revolutionize the mobile device industry. It has also caused a public uproar over privacy concerns. Is the potential worth the risk?

    Wearing them glasses is basically like advertising a $1500 piece of equipment you have on your face. 'Hey look at me muggers'

  • @justinr8526
    @justinr8526 Před 10 lety +34

    It costs 1500.
    It makes you look like a goon.
    It's an additional 40 a month to use.
    You can only wear them for an hour or two.
    I already own something that does everything these do, it's called a phone.
    Who thought this was a good idea?

    • @BlueCosmology
      @BlueCosmology Před 9 lety

      ***** That's really not true. There's very very few examples of technology that in the past was released commercially for an extortionate price when there were already devices that can do everything it can do for cheaper and more conveniently.
      Sure, a lot of technology is released commercially that now looking back on it seems terrible, but at the time performed tasks better than other devices at the time could.
      This does not do that. There is nothing at all that it can do that can not be done cheaper, better and more conveniently. This is not how a lot of technological stuff that we fully embrace now was originally, this should not be a commercial model.
      This would be the equivalent of a company saying they've invented the mobile phone and selling it, but it's battery only lasts for 5 seconds so it always has to be plugged into the mains and it is too heavy to carry anywhere. That is not how commercial mobile phones were first released.

      "I already own something that does everything these do" is such the stupidest thing anyone could say about anything tech related. You should be ashamed of yourself.

    In the future, there's no doubt this will be less expensive and the glass itself will appear no different than any other type of glasses. The only way you'll know someone is using one of these is if you look closely to see the eye, no bigger than your webcam eye... but people are confusing these advanced technologies with "better living". I don't think people will be any more happy with this... we'll only be more sophisticated as privacy is thrown out the window (not that it hasn't been thrown out already) and laws will adapt and strip more privileges away from their own people. I feel technology will be our own downfall, as it slowly traps us into little virtual cages.

      @DecodingHistory. Před 10 lety +2

      nah, man will always control technology and it's not there for "better living" instead it's there to mean living simpler. Plus google just singed a deal with Ray Ban so they will most likely be making google glass compatible with aviators etc.

    • @DecodingHistory.
      @DecodingHistory. Před 10 lety +2

      Haylla2008 nothing wrong with it. Do you go and hunt animals for your food every night?

    • @Haylla2008
      @Haylla2008 Před 10 lety

      Jay L Just because we have lazier means of doing things already does not mean we should continue to become lazier in our methods.
      Also, your comparisons are not similar. I don't hunt my food (because area and legal restrictions) but there are still people who do. I can already get the information these glasses provide without having these glasses. I would have to go very far out of my way to hunt my own food. Food is needed. Something to make information even easier to access is not.

    A few years before the Google glass I believe a sky mall magazine was selling something similar. I think it was use for watching things, not computing. However I feel this glass was a prototype with premature release. It is a step in the right direction to achieve ubiquitous computing. I am looking forward to that goal getting realized within certain parameters.

    • @Typhoon792
      @Typhoon792 Před 10 lety

      Jordan W Not entirely. You'd be surprised how much control the suppliers have over that. In any case, its current price isn't anywhere near representative of what you say. $1,000+ for this crap is demand from like 1 person. "It's not really for sale but we'll give it to you I guess if you give us this much." That might as well be how they advertise it. Price based on demand... Is that literally how you see the cost of everything? There are many more factors.

    • @jwalk121
      @jwalk121 Před 10 lety +1

      @Typhoon792 no need to speak with such conviction. I was merely giving him a brief reasoning on price. If you want to get into it.. Price is determined by supply and demand. That is why the suppliers have some sort of leverage when it comes to the price. Regardless, the supplier [to the public] in this situation is Apple, just a business doing business. It sold for 1500 because they limited the supply while the demand greatly outweighs the supply. You are just pretending the demand isn't high enough to warrant $1000 but it easily is. Not only is this the first if it's kind, it's also made by Apple, who's brand premium is easily 20%.

    • @Typhoon792
      @Typhoon792 Před 10 lety +2

      Also, I'm not sure if you were trolling in regards to saying that it's made by Apple... Regardless, no I don't want to get into it. Yeah, you gave some explanation of supply and demand and my point was that this isn't all there is to it.

    I got mine today and immediately wanted more productivity software. It is already very good at the limited social media interaction as you pointed out. And the biggest need for immediate upgrade is Googles voice recognition software. My android phone is much better...and its Motorola - a Google company. That said, I like it.

    Many theaters flood the room with infrared light. The camera sensors pick it up as white light while our eyes can't see it at all.

    What's interesting is In Toronto Canada it is illegal to use any portable devices while driving, I can see this causing a crap ton of accidents should people wear these while operating a vehicle. Your washroom comment is valid and that is a concern as well. Privacy in "delicate" situations can be compromised and new types of Vids will undoubtedly end up on the internet.

    I'm surprised it doesn't have a wire less charging system. like a platform you place it on to charge.
