  • Adam Savage's shop is almost unrecognizable since our video tour a decade ago. But in the last month it's undergone its most massive transformation yet, with the prop display space now completely gone, replaced by racks and racks of model-making bits and bobs from the former ILM model shop. Adam is THRILLED with his "new" shop, and there are more videos -- and more changes -- to come! What do YOU think?

    The mirrors in the top rack are a living testament to how incredible the people working in the special effects industry are. 99% of people just jam their hand in there or get a step stool.

    • @sundaynightdrunk
      @sundaynightdrunk Před 4 měsíci +22

      And if you think about the amount of time it would take to check each one when re-ordering stock by moving a step stool, they saved a ton of time putting the mirrors there, where one could just walk along and see what's low or empty and therefore what needed to be ordered. An elegant and creative solution to a problem that presented itself.

      I work in sound for TV and will be implementing this on our setup if at all possible-- we have a whole wall of divided bins with transmitters, receivers, mics, cables, etc, and this is a brilliant, low cost, low tech way of checking what's available on the top few rows. Love it!

      Keep your trousers on. It’s a very nifty idea by a short guy, and to have it preserved and shown to a huge audience in a video years later is the perfect way to celebrate it - but if you had come up with that and somebody called you “a living testament to how incredible the people working in the xyz industry are”, wouldn’t you assume they’re making fun of you?

    I've loved your enthusiasm for even the simplest of things ever since I first started watching Mythbusters with my dad as a child. Seeing how the shop there was setup reminded me of my own basement/garage growing up, and that it didn't matter what we were working on, my dad could always just go back to his stacks of drawers and cabinets and open one seemingly at random and grab the exact nut/bolt/screw/piece of particle board that we needed to finish our project. Now that he's in his 70s and truly retired, he's slowly been going through it all, labeling and sorting as he goes. Getting rid of anything he know I'll never need once it all becomes mine. Seeing your shop infrastructure videos just makes me want to have a space like this, to tinker and build, and something I can eventually pass down to my own children in the future where they'll hopefully share the same desire to create and fix that a lot of us here have.

    Adam and Joey, thank you for the shop tour of the new layout and storage. Your preservation of objects that should be in the Smithsonian is excellent! You always show off the detail of making things fit your space, or in the case of the builder of the wooden storage bins...the mirrors along the top row to see inside for items. Absolutely cool to see.

    It's so ironic that I decided to follow your path in 2024. I'd been thinking about finding new homes for all my tools and hardware spread throughout my home, garage, and basement. I had searched on CZcams for, you know, "shop organizing tips" and whatnot and found out you were doing the same. I was previously not a subscriber of your channel (😮WHAT!?! I know, I know...), but you've got one more subscriber now. Great job, Adam, as with everything you do you are an inspiration. Thank you.

    I have a lot of "things" too and because I live in a city I have also needed to move often so I use the same technique with packing; I photograph the contents of a crate and then pack it and number it. Then I file the photo with the number so I can look through an ordered album of things and then know exactly in which box the small item is. Definitely recommend this approach!

    Hi Adam / Tested, a small suggestion for the architectural bits you mentioned (about glueing one of each item to the outside of the drawer) perhaps just snap a picture and affix that to the front.
    I’d imagine that those pieces are harder to come by now and you may have exact numbers, it seems a waste to glue one of each to the outside. But otherwise a great idea to make it a visual sorting / storage solution

    Adam, in addition to you preserving these amazing artifacts in your shop, I thing a scanned library of say-the 1,000 most common shop model components used for ILM props-would be a wonderful gift to the modeling community.
    Many people like myself have economic or bodily disabling factors that make physical prop modeling inaccessible. However, 3D modeling is something that's accessible to anyone who can use a computer. (One of the best 3D motion graphics artists I know has cerebral palsy; they're incredible.) Having a "kitbash" library of these model components would be a great way to ensure the legacy of this craft continues. Digital 3D is such a blank canvas that it's actually terrifying to work in; like you said about paint, you don't know what you want until you see what colors are available. The same is true for "kitbashing" (I hope this means the same thing to you as it means in digital 3D prop design)-you need components and parts to 'handle' and inspire you to make cool shit.
    Love this video. SO happy for you and the new shop. Wish you many, many happy years making cool shit here.

      @@nubreed13 Food for thought! We have rental houses. For my current shop I looked for a house with a large detached garage. Found one with 950sf garage and 850sf adjacent metal building. Renting out the front house covers the mortgage+some and I work full-time in the back garage. Had the power company install a separate meter (which they do for free). Got a strange look asking for 400amp service to the garage, but glad I did since 2-3 of us can work on different machines or weld at the same time with the AC running with no problems.
      This was the best way I could think of to make the jump out of my home's attached garage--at a profit instead of paying commercial space rent.
