Once, the Tongala River, which most maps now call the Murray, was a place of peace where the Water-Rat Tribe could live with ease. But then one day appeared the Whowie: a great frog-headed lizard, long and fat and slow, prowling the banks.

I love y'all's stories, but isn't voicing the Aboriginal people of Australia with the accent of European colonizers a little gauche?

Or the cane toad. Both are terrifying
I can imagine seeing this somewhere in Australia tbh...
At one time, give or take 60 000 years, you probably would have. Megalania basically fits the description of the Whowie, minus the six legs.
It actually sounds strikingly similar to Koolasuchus, a gigantic salamander whose fossils have been found in Australia. Just with a few extra legs and a miles deep cave. I wouldn’t be surprised if fossils of something like that inspired this legend.
@@GallowglassVT rip in peace giant three toed sloth, you wern't sanic enough.
How does a giant Monitor lizard have the face of a frog?
RocaDeearCenjar
Mayhaps, there was a great monator lizard that had evolutionary adaptions to make it more frog like?
So... the next encounter of my D&D group
My first thought after the description was "Why has this thing not, to my knowledge, been made into an official D&D monster?" They use so many other creatures from the myths off various cultures, including some from Australia, and the Whowie seems like it should have been a shoe-in!
I was thinking the exact same thing!
Yees!!
I have said before that setting a RPG in australia using then Aboriginal myths and culture as its core would be a fantastic way to teach non aboriginal people about their cultures. Australia is a big place and the Aboriginal nations are wide and diverse with lots of different spirits and stories that could be used to make an adventuring party very happy for a good while.
For instance moving from nation to nation would be like moving from city to city in normal D&D. Different culture, make sure you keep them happy by knowing what you need to do to gain access (message sticks etc) and have to deal with their individual nations troubles and creatures. Many of the animals in the dreamtime stories are also anthropomorphised so that adds a lot of texture too.
It would take a dedicated team a lot of time to research and write but I think it would be well worth it.
Something I love about Aborigine myth is that a lot of their monsters sound eerily similar to Australia's prehistoric beasts. This Whowie sounds a lot like the real life giant lizard called Megalania, which ancient Australians met and very well may have driven to extinction. Same can be said for the semiaquatic giant Bunyip creature, which sounds a lot like the wombat like extinct Diprotodon. The Aborigine cultures are considered the oldest still in existence, and their stories reflect that.
Does the monster remind anyone else of the megalania lizard? I mean humans probably met her in australia and its facade could have been passed down through generations with a few alterations
I came to the comments looking if someone else thought of this.
Stauros Menexes Ditto!
Stauros Menexes what a genius damn
I don't think megalania and humans existed at the same time.. But maybe in wrong
Monsters We Met, a BBC documentary, used the framing of this story for its Megalania encounter.

It's not often we see Aboriginal Australian traditions and Dreamtime stories discussed in the west or even in Australia outside of kindergarten for many of us, which is such a shame for such ancient and rich cultures. Thanks for making this video and I hope you'll revisit Dreamtime stories in the future!
I'm really happy to see these Australian Aboriginal ones.
Anyone else got a really weird, kid-focused sidebar from this video?
Yes, me too. I'm like uh... How does my history of history, swords, writing, cookery and strategy games lead to this???
I think someone messed up their tags when they uploaded this video.

I wonder if the Whowie is a mythologized memory of Megalania?
Probably. Fits the description pretty well.
Lol! Just commented something similar before I saw this one.
But Megalania is a reptile, so isn't it cold-blooded? If it is cold-blooded, why is it active during the night?
Unlikely, as the distribution for the Megalania and the tribe's region are two completely different ones, but good thought nonetheless.
Grevyalres X With how massive it is, it could probably retain a good amount of body heat well into the night. For a modern example, look at crocs and gators. Both are known to remain active at night despite being exothermic.
Whowie vs Emu Army.
Who would win?
Well, considering there was a time when Australia went to war with the emus and lost, it would be quite the battle.

Considering around that time this takes place there was an actual real life creature called the megalania (basically a Komodo dragon but as big as the thing in this story) and it fits the descriptions it almost perfectly especially since it was around with humans either that or the koolasuchus thing
Dreamtime stories are the best, especially when it comes to the spirits and monsters.

I like how he gave Aboriginals Australian accents.
A lot of stories from the dreaming are great allegories or have metaphor meanings, but with the Whowie it’s actually a literal event. The Megalania was a Monitor lizard in Australia that went extinct about 50,000 years ago, meaning it was one of the megafauna species that aboriginal nations would have encountered in their first 5-10,000 years of settlement around the Murray river area (which also used to connect up to a network of inland seas)
Aboriginal's didn't have nations. Insecure fools love to spread that lie.

The funniest part is how, based on this tale; the Whowie could've absolutely been a foot away and you'd have heard the wind alone.

I love the way the Whowie is drawn and described.
This monster surprisingly have a lot of descriptions of habits and behaves way more detailed then your average run of the mill monsters, almost like a normal real life animal

A thicc lizard but not as incredibly thicc as Gaston
Why do I find u every where
It figures that Australia would have cool-ass monsters given how weird the real animals there are. Intriguing concept with how it initially looks harmless. IMHO Amphibia have lots of untapped monster potential
It's also cool how the stories are woven into the landscape, referring to its features, and as in the previous one you get the sense that this was a very "honor your elders" type of culture in the olden days
Fascinating seeing some Australian mythology for once.
It's getting better these days, but there's been a long period of time where most of us wouldn't have heard stories like these.
We just didn't seem to have enough respect for Aboriginal culture to actually bother to listen to tales like these...
You mean aboriginal mythology?
Sounds, to me, like an allegory for death, itself; ponderous but inevitable, dreaded yet indiscriminate, & so subtle that its victims never wake & its presence is often dismissed.
So the myth could, just as easily, be called "How we Murdered Death!"
🤘
Several people have already mentioned the megalania lizard.
Another possibility that comes to mind is the Asian giant salamander.
(A creature that doesn't seem to exist in Australia, but maybe in the distant past...❓🤔)
Joe Rogers thay do live in new guinea though, and at the end of the last ice age the australian first nations did trade with the new guidelines, that doesn't explain why the whowie myths are from central australia but it's still a possibility
The ancestors of most Native Australians certainly came from Asia, but I dunno if they came from that far north.
I love these myths of other cultures. (It also gives me great ideas for D&D sessions)
I love it this channel

There exists somewhere on the internet somewhat questionable fanart for occasions such as this.
“A monster long, and fat, and slow-“
Me?
I remember being told this story when i was a kid, forgot about it till now
“Where’s my dragonator”
considering australia is... australia, i really wouldn't be surprised if this was an actual creature and not just a myth.
Sounds like the people were just being eaten by a giant crocodile or fish but they had a different name for it. There are reports even today of giant fish and crocodiles big enough to eat people.
It gets too cold down that way for crocodiles.
it is my second year in Sydney and I appreciate the fact that Australia gets some shout out in this channel
Great dream time story choice!
No monster is as dangerous as Shrimp on the barbie
