Just as the gods Tezcatlipoca, Quetzalcoatl, and Nanahautzin sacrificed themselves so the sun could move across the sky, so too did the Aztecs believe people must follow their example, and spill blood to thank the gods for their life, their maize, and the sun.

Interesting
you actually took the time to learn how to pronounce the names of the gods that are hard to pronounce even for locals...this is amazing. leave some professionalism for the rest of us, dude
But Spain realized this wasn't India, but they pillaged it anyway.
I take a ticket to Food Mountain as well :D
So extra credits I have 2 questions
Who's your 2 favorites Aztec God's and myths and what's your favorite mythology to talk about
Humans : there's to much light
Gods : ( throws a rabbit )
Humans : good
If I were to guess it would because many cultures see a rabbit on the moon instead of the man on the moon, japan for example
Ya Yeet
Hmmm, funny, because in Japanese mythology rabbits are also connected with the moon, and it was even believed that rabbits lived on the moon
So the Russians were wrong when they sent Laika and Bielka into space, they should have sent Roger and Jessica
"Too" much light. Dumbass.
«Can I be the next Sun?»
«Sure. Jump into that fire.»
«How about I strap the Sun on my belt, or just jump in the sky like you did?»
«...no.»

Nah, Dark Souls actually makes sense as is, this only makes sense when you start cutting away the flowery language and think of it as a political history.

I’m loving the Aztec styled art, great work guys!
JokeJack ikr It’s awesome to see a new art style.
I love that you guys used a códice style, thanks for using your high quality video making to teach the myths of my country.
Me too, that was the first thing I notice and I just can't stop of admire how wonderful it is
Aren't Mexican's 49% Spanish and the native most of the native tribes they trace their non European ancestor the enemies and victims of the Aztecs and hated them so much they worked with a foreign force to destroy them? Saying the Aztecs cultures is that of Mexico is kinda like claiming Russian culture developed from that of the Golden Horde.
@@jacoblevenson7934 well yes... And no, u see, the prehispanic cultures of Mexico hate the Meshicas rulers and their allies (the Tlaxcaltecas and the Zapotecas) the three rulers in the Triple Alianza (Three Allie's) A.K.A. Aztecas, the other cultures switch side with the Spanish to kill them (Totonacos, Otomíes, Mayas and Toltecas)
When the tlaxcaltecas see they can't win they betrayed the Meshicas, then, the Zapotecas surrender asking by forgiveness but they end being slaves (surviving with the Tlaxcaltecas) but the Meshicas were totally destroy by steel, fire and sickness, only one third of the Aztecs die [the Meshicas] so it's understandable that Mexican culture use the most reconocible faction in their history to represent us.

I can just imagine going through your day normally as usual as the sun stops in the middle of the day and says
*_"I demand their blood"_*
It's official, Aztec mythology holds the world record for escalating DIRECTLY to human sacrifice. Second place goes to Phoenicia. ;)
Well yes, the Meshican people was know by his contemporary neighbor for being savages, the savages in power, but savages, history class teachers tell us that meshicas sacrifice around 100000 (mostly Mayans, totonacs and tlaxcaltecan) people by day in a three days festival, what in first instance sounds ridiculous, but it has been prove be true, and that was the reason of why almost every nation in the mesoamerican continent switch side with the Spanish when La conquista de México ( The conquest of Mexico)
@@Zamahael where;s the credible source for this? it sounds like a conquistador tall tale
@@Zamahael Yeah buddy you got a source?
@@ilanlopez9826 well yes, in fact there it is a lot of evidence, the tower of skulls under the Mexico City catacombs, there it is thousand of skulls of the victims all preserved by the mummification techniques of the Tlatoanis (warrior Priest chief) the murals in the pyramid of the Sun, the books "la conquista de la nueva españa" (the conquest of the new Spain, which tell the recordings of the missionaries who believe that the meshicas were committed diabolical sacrifices, the book, the diary of Bartolomé de las Casas (other ecclesiastical guy but very important cause he was the first in study the ritual sacrifices) and the Codice Mayor (an old pictographic roll of rituals preserved in the Museo Nacional)
there was much more but the frailes anglicanos proceed to burn all the codices they found because they were super scare of the rituals and really believe they were "saving the souls of this confused people" (they words not mine)
Sadly the majority of this sources are in old spanish from Castilla, but if you wanted i can research and send it to you from email, im mexican and i love the history of my country and take lots of seminars about La conquista de México (the conquest of Mexico), La Independencia (the independence of Mexico) , El primer Imperio Mexicano (the First Mexican empire) , Las intervenciones Francesas (the French interest) and the Porfiriato (no translation cause is the time of the dictator Porfirio Díaz)

I love how you're focusing on Mexico for this episode. I planned out an entire skit in high school based on the myth surrounding the 5th sun's creation. My parents, both Mexican, could never see a man in the moon until I had to spell it out for them in my late teens. They always only saw a rabbit.
coincidence, I THINK NOT
Wow now I am going to see if I can see a rabbit!
The gods fighting over the Sun is equivalent to us today fighting over the last pop tart in the box

Did you not watch the video?
The 5th Sun 2 took a rabbit to the face and became the Moon.
Obviously it's a service game
Because this isn't final fantasy.
What?
I think at this point we should settle for a remaster or something. It will also probably have lootboxes.

Kudos to the artist(s) of this video, they did an awesome job depicting the art style of the Aztecs!
To be honest I kinda prefer the OSP telling of the myth here. This is pretty damn good though.
Edit: Holy crap. I’ve never gotten this many likes on anything before. Thank you everyone!
Both Red & Blue are way better at this, agreed.
Yeah, I like OSP better for the, well, sarcasm! But this is also pretty good.
Ringlord same
Ringlord agreed
To be fair, both OSP's and this vid has amazing art to go with the storytelling
Matthew: "And the gods created a new sky and a new earth with the body of the giant".
Thor: "Hey, dad always told that story in Valhala, during the drinking contests. Are they your friends, father?".
Odin: "No, definitely not. At least not anyone I remember..."
Odin: "...then again, my college years were pretty wild and I don't really remember much due to all the drinking and partying..."
I feel like when the lord of the dead tricked Quetzalcoatl he said "YOU'VE BEEN BONED!" That's the vibe I'm getting from that guy.

“Earth Monster”, Tlaltecuhtli?
I think y’all meant “Cipactli”.
It’s physical appearance is described to be a cross between Crocodilian/Caiman, Fish, and Frog/Toad; mouths adorned on all its joints while forever hungry and will consume ANYTHING/EVERYTHING!
As a Mexican I can say I approve this video! Well done on the prononciation even pronouncing in Spanish is difficult and you pulled through, congrats
But it's not really Spanish is it
So that's why there are so many rabbits in my yard at night. XD The gods are making sure the moon doesn't get too bright
As I have heard the story Quetzalcoatl didn't call the rain of fire, that was Tlaloc who was grieving over his wife who Tezcatlipoca stole. Tlaloc neglected his job as rain bringer and the earth dried up so Quetzalcoatl pleaded and the humans begged Tlaloc for rain but this just annoyed Tlaloc so he made it rain fire
Then Tlalocs wife became the sun and doted on her humans until Tezcatlipoca accused her of being a poser who only pretended to like the humans and made her cry blood for 52 years
Also Quetzalcoatl hates the practice of human sacrafice, it disgusted him.
Also I have seen conflicting accounts of the god of the fifth Sun being Tonatiuh or Huitzilopochtli. According to following legends Tonatiuh had gone from humble to arrogant and the other gods started to hate him because he demanded too much blood to move around and the more he halted the closer the evil goddesses of Stars called the Tzitzimitl would catch up to him and try to consume him to destroy the sun and then the earth.
Quetzalcoatl also saw that Tonatiuh had hoarded all art, music, and Cocoa beans in his sun palace so he snuck in and stole them from him to give to humanity because he loves humans
Lord of the Dawn Tlahuizcalpantecuhtli tried shooting an arrow at Tonatiuh but he caught the arrow and shot it back impaling the Lord of Dawn in the head and transforming him into the god of Frost and coldness
Finally Huitzilopochtli the Warrior god who had fought the night to keep it back had enough of Tonatiuh and booted him out of the sun and took it upon himself to carry the sun around diligently to keep it out of the hands of the night
3:10 If fire's on fire, then water's wet.
The Aztecs have such an awesome mythology
But have you heard the story of the rabbit in the moon
and the cow who hopped the planets while straddling a spoon
and she who climbed the mountains while whistling up a tune
and swapped songs with swallows while riding on a broom
MOSSSSSSSSSS
7:50 If you dont like something - throw a rabbit at it!
From the outside looking in on any religion, I always end up asking “how could someone believe this?” And “who could come up with this?”. They all seem outlandish when you aren’t told it as a child.
Let's not pretend that modern religions aren't just as outlandish
In chinese mythology the Moon is also called 玉兔 jade-rabbit.
I come from Colima, Mexico (port to asia) and there are storys here of the period when China was making big ass explorers ship (Imperial Celestial Fleet) and them making friends of a native king here 👌
The Man in the Moon looks a little like a rabbit holding a stick if you squint. (The Japanese say he's holding the mortar and pestle you used to use to prepare rice back in the day.)
so we all agree that the thing in the moon is a rabbit
This gave me flash backs to my 9th grade Freshman Research Paper because Aztecs was my topic.
I swear, every time I hear a different account of this myth, the events are completely different between versions! How much detail was included in the original myth? I will say though, this is the most complete version of the creation myth! Thanks!
Quetzalcoatl is kinda the mvp of the story he tried his best to help the other gods and help humanity
I liked when they threw the rabbit at him.😂
